We present a chip-scale scanning dual-comb spectroscopy (SDCS) approach for broadband ultrahigh-resolution spectral acquisition. SDCS uses Si3N4 microring resonators that generate two single soliton micro-combs spanning 37 THz (300 nm) on the same chip from a single 1550-nm laser, forming a high-mutual-coherence dual-comb. We realize continuous tuning of the dual-comb system over the entire optical span of 37.5 THz with high precision using integrated microheater-based wavelength trackers. This continuous wavelength tuning is enabled by simultaneous tuning of the laser frequency and the two single soliton micro-combs over a full free spectral range of the microrings. We measure the SDCS resolution to be 319+-4.6 kHz. Using this SDCS system, we perform the molecular absorption spectroscopy of H13C14N over its 2.3 THz (18 nm)-wide overtone band, and show that the massively parallel heterodyning offered by the dual-comb expands the effective spectroscopic tuning speed of the laser by one order of magnitude. Our chip-scale SDCS opens the door to broadband spectrometry and massively parallel sensing with ultrahigh spectral resolution.
Low propagation loss in high confinement waveguides is critical for chip-based nonlinear photonics applications. Sophisticated fabrication processes which yield sub-nm roughness are generally needed to reduce scattering points at the waveguide interfaces in order to achieve ultralow propagation loss. Here, we show ultralow propagation loss by shaping the mode using a highly multimode structure to reduce its overlap with the waveguide interfaces, thus relaxing the fabrication processing requirements. Microresonators with intrinsic quality factors (Q) of 31.8 $\pm$ 4.4 million are experimentally…
We demonstrate fully crystalline, single-mode ultrahigh quality factor integrated microresonators comprising epitaxially grown Si$_{0.86}$Ge$_{0.14}$ waveguide cores with silicon claddings. These waveguides support resonances with internal $Q >10^8$ for both polarization modes, a nearly order-of-magnitude improvement over that seen in prior integrated Si photonics platforms. The maximum $Q$ is $1.71\pm0.06 \times 10^8$ for the transverse magnetic (TM) polarization mode, corresponding to a loss of $0.39\pm0.02$ dB/m. Together with silicon's strong Kerr nonlinearity and low losses in the optical…
We present homogeneous quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) emitting around 3 THz which display bandwidths up to 950 GHz with a single stable beatnote. Devices are spontaneously operating in a harmonic comb state, and when in a dense mode regime they can be injection locked at the cavity roundtrip frequency with very small RF powers down to -55 dBm. When operated in the electrically unstable region of negative differential resistance, the device displays ultra-broadband operation exceeding 1.83 THz ($Δf/f=50\%$) with high phase noise, exhibiting self-sustained, periodic voltage oscillations. The low …
We demonstrate fiber mode-locked dual frequency comb spectroscopy for broadband, high resolution measurements in a rapid compression machine (RCM). We apply an apodization technique to improve the short-term signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR), which enables broadband spectroscopy at combustion-relevant timescales. We measure the absorption on 24345 individual wavelength elements (comb teeth) between 5967 and 6133 cm-1 at 704 microsecond time resolution during a 12-ms compression of a CH4-N2 mixture. We discuss the effect of the apodization technique on the absorption spectra, and apply an identical e…
We report a 92 channel RF channelizer based on a 48.9 GHz integrated micro-comb that operates via soliton crystals, together with a passive high-Q ring resonator that acts as a periodic filter with an optical 3dB bandwidth of 121.4 MHz. We obtain an instant RF bandwidth of 8.08 GHz and 17.55 GHz achieved through temperature tuning. These results represent a major advance to achieving fully integrated photonic RF spectrum channelizers with reduced low complexity, size, and high performance for digital-compatible signal detection and broadband analog signal processing.
Broadband dual-comb spectroscopy has attracted increasing interests due to its unique advantages in high spectral resolution, fast detection, and so on. Although the dual-comb technique is relatively mature in the infrared wavelengths, it is, currently, not commercially capable of practical applications in the terahertz regime due to the lack of high performance broadband terahertz dual-comb sources. In the terahertz frequency range, the electrically pumped quantum cascade laser (QCL) is a suitable candidate for the dual-comb operation. However, free running terahertz QCL dual-comb sources nor…
We report molecular detection using dual frequency-comb spectroscopy with highly coherent broadband (6.6-11.4 {\m}m) long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) combs. The combs were produced via intra-pulse difference frequency generation (IDFG) in ZGP crystals using sub-three-cycle (20 fs) driving pulses from mode-locked Cr:ZnS lasers at the central wavelength of 2.4 {\m}m). Real-time and up to video rate (0.1-12 s per spectrum) acquisition of molecular spectra with some 240,000 comb-mode-resolved data points spaced by 80 MHz and referenced to a Rb clock with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) >300 has been …
We report a broadband microwave frequency converter based on a coherent Kerr optical micro-comb generated by an integrated micro-ring resonator. The coherent micro-comb displays features that are consistent with soliton crystal dynamics with an FSR of 48.9GHz. We use this to demonstrate a high-performance millimeter-wave local oscillator at 48.9GHz in the Q-band for microwave frequency conversion. We experimentally verify the microwave performance up to 40 GHz, achieving a ratio of 6.8 dB between output RF power and IF power and a spurious suppression ratio of > 43.5 dB. The experimental resul…
Developments in integrated photonics have led to stable, compact, and broadband comb generators that support a wide range of applications. Current on-chip comb generators, however, are still limited by low optical pump-to-comb conversion efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate an integrated electro-optic frequency comb with a conversion efficiency of 30% and an optical bandwidth of 132 nm, featuring a 100-times higher conversion efficiency and 2.2-times broader optical bandwidth compared with previous state-of-the-art integrated electro-optic combs. We further show that, enabled by the high efficie…
Dissipative Kerr-microresonator soliton combs (hereafter called soliton combs) are promising to realize chip scale integration of full soliton comb systems providing high precision, broad spectral coverage and a coherent link to the micro/mm/THz domain with diverse applications coming on line all the time. However, the large soliton comb spacing hampers some applications. For example, for spectroscopic applications, there are simply not enough comb lines available to sufficiently cover almost any relevant absorption features. Here, we overcome this limitation by scanning the comb mode spacing …
We report a photoacoustic spectroscopy setup with a high-power mid-infrared frequency comb as the light source. The setup is used in broadband spectroscopy of radiocarbon methane. Due to the high sensitivity of a cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic cell and the high power light source, we can reach a detection limit below 100 ppb in a broadband measurement with a sample volume of only a few milliliters. The first infrared spectrum of $^{14}\text{CH}_4$ is reported and given a preliminary assignment. The results lay a foundation for the development of optical detection systems for radiocarbon met…
Microresonator frequency combs, or microcombs, have gained wide appeal for their rich nonlinear physics and wide range of applications. Stoichiometric silicon nitride films grown via low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD), in particular, are widely used in chip-integrated Kerr microcombs. Critical to such devices is the ability to control the microresonator dispersion, which has contributions from both material refractive index dispersion and geometric confinement. Here, we show that modifications to the LPCVD growth conditions, specifically the ratio of the gaseous precursors, has a s…
Optical frequency combs consist of equally spaced discrete optical frequency components and are essential tools for optical communications and for precision metrology, timing and spectroscopy. To date, wide-spanning combs are most often generated by mode-locked lasers or dispersion-engineered resonators with third-order Kerr nonlinearity. An alternative comb generation method uses electro-optic (EO) phase modulation in a resonator with strong second-order nonlinearity, resulting in combs with excellent stability and controllability. Previous EO combs, however, have been limited to narrow width…
