We investigate the effect of Ni doping on the Fe-site in single crystals of the magnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ for doping concentrations of up to 4%. A clear suppression in the superconducting transition temperature is observed in specific heat, resistivity and magnetization measurements. Upon Ni-doping, the resistivity curves shift up in a parallel fashion indicating a strong increase of the residual resistivity due to scattering by charged dopand atoms while the shape of the curve and thus the electronic structure appears largely unchanged. The observed step $ΔC/T_c$ at the superconducting transition decreases strongly for increasing Ni doping in agreement with expectations based on a model of multi-band superconductivity and strong inter-band pairing. The upper critical field slopes are reduced upon Ni doping for in- as well as out-of-plane fields leading to a small reduction in the superconducting anisotropy. The specific heat measurements of the magnetic transition reveal the same BKT behavior close to the transition temperature $T_m$ for all doping levels. The transition temperature is essentially unchanged upon doping. The in to out-of-plane anisotropy of Eu-magnetism observed at small magnetic fields is unaltered as compared to the undoped compound. All of these observations indicate a decoupling of the Eu magnetism from superconductivity and essentially no influence of Ni doping on the Eu magnetism in this compound.
We discover a robust coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in an iron arsenide RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$. The new material crystallizes in an intergrowth structure of RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and EuFe$_2$As$_2$, such that the Eu sublattice turns out to be primitive instead of being body-centered in EuFe$_2$As$_2$. The FeAs layers, featured by asymmetric As coordinations, are hole doped due to charge homogenization. Our combined measurements of electrical transport, magnetization and heat capacity unambiguously and consistently indicate bulk superconductivity at 36.5 K in the FeAs layers and ferroma…
We investigate the anisotropic superconducting and magnetic properties of single-crystal RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ using magnetotransport and magnetization measurements. We determine a magnetic ordering temperature of the Eu-moments of $T_m$ = 15 K and a superconducting transition temperature of $T_c$ = 36.8 K. The superconducting phase diagram is characterized by high upper critical field slopes of -70 kG/K and -42 kG/K for in-plane and out-of-plane fields, respectively, and a surprisingly low superconducting anisotropy of $Γ$ = 1.7. Ginzburg-Landau parameters of $κ_c \sim 67$ and $κ_{ab} \sim 108$ in…
We present a study of the upper critical field, H$_{c2}$, of pristine and proton-irradiated RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ crystals in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 65 T. The data for H$_{c2}$ reveal pronounced downwards curvature, particularly for the in-plane field orientation, and a superconducting anisotropy that decreases with decreasing temperature. These features are indicative of Pauli paramagnetic limiting. For the interpretation of these data, we use a model of a clean single-band superconductor with an open Fermi surface in the shape of a warped cylinder, which includes strong paramagnetic limi…
In the novel stoichiometric iron-based material RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$ superconductivity coexists with a peculiar long-range magnetic order of Eu 4f states. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal a complex three dimensional electronic structure and compare it with density functional theory calculations. Multiple superconducting gaps were measured on various sheets of the Fermi surface. High resolution resonant photoemission spectroscopy reveals magnetic order of the Eu 4f states deep into the superconducting phase. Both the absolute values and the anisotropy of the supercondu…
We report detailed specific heat measurements on the recently discovered magnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$. We investigated the superconducting transition at 37K and extract the phase boundary for in and out-of plane fields resulting in an anisotropy ratio of 1.8. An unusual cusp-like feature in the calorimetric data near 14.9K marks the onset of a magnetic phase. Studying the effect of small fields along the crystallographic $c$ axis, we resolve a shift in the cusp position moving to lower temperatures. For in-plane fields the cusp rapidly disappears and a broad shoulder that shifts to…
Motivated by the recent discovery of helical magnetic structure in RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$, we investigate interlayer ordering of magnetic moments in materials composed of spatially-separated superconducting and ferromagnetically-aligned layers. We consider the interplay between the normal and superconducting indirect exchange interaction mediated by tunneling between the conducting layers. We elaborate a recipe to evaluate the normal interlayer interaction via two-dimensional density of states of an isolated layer and demonstrate that for bands with small fillings, such interaction is typically …
We use neutron polarization analysis to study spin excitation anisotropy in the optimal-isovalent-doped superconductor BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 (Tc = 30 K). Different from optimally hole and electron-doped BaFe2As2, where there is a clear spin excitation anisotropy in the paramagnetic tetragonal state well above Tc, we find no spin excitation anisotropy for energies above 2 meV in the normal state of BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2. Upon entering the superconducting state, significant spin excitation anisotropy develops at the antiferromagnetic (AF) zone center QAF = (1, 0, L = odd), while magnetic spectrum is iso…
The intrinsically hole-doped RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ exhibits bulk superconductivity at $T_{\mathrm{sc}}=36.5$ K and ferromagnetic ordering in the Eu sublattice at $T_\mathrm{m}=15$ K. Here we present a hole-compensation study by introducing extra itinerant electrons via a Ni substitution in the ferromagnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ with $T_{\mathrm{sc}}>T_{\mathrm{m}}$. With the Ni doping, $T_{\mathrm{sc}}$ decreases rapidly, and the Eu-spin ferromagnetism and its $T_{\mathrm{m}}$ remain unchanged. Consequently, the system RbEu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ transforms into a superconducting fe…
The structure of the gap parameter ($Δ_{k}$) for the hole-doped cuprates has been studied. The obtained results indicate that the antinodal part of $Δ_{k}$ is very weakly temperature dependent and above the critical temperature ($T_{C}$), it extends into the anomalous normal state to the pseudogap temperature. On the other hand, the values of $Δ_{k}$, which are close to the nodal part, are strongly temperature dependent. The model has been tested for the ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}}$ superconductor. It has been shown that the theoretical results agree with the experimental data.
In this work the effect of Carbon and Aluminium doping on the multiband MgB2 superconductor is analyzed. Using the rigid band and virtual crystal approximations (RBA and VCA), it was found that the main effect of doping on the band structure is band filling and a relative band-shift. If this band-shift is eliminated with an appropriate change of scale, then the RBA provides a good description of the band structure as function of doping. With this procedure both the inplane electrical conductivity of the C- and Al-doped MgB2 and the superconducting critical temperature follow the same curve. Th…
The in-plane anisotropy of the electrical resistivity across the coupled orthorhombic and magnetic transitions of the iron pnictides has been extensively studied in the parent and electron-doped compounds. All these studies universally show that the resistivity $ρ_{a}$ across the long orthorhombic axis $a_{O}$ - along which the spins couple antiferromagnetically below the magnetic transition temperature - is smaller than the resistivity $ρ_{b}$ of the short orthorhombic axis $b_{O}$, i. e. $ρ_{a}<ρ_{b}$. Here we report that in the hole-doped compounds Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, as the …
We use polarized inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study spin excitations of optimally hole-doped superconductor Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_2$As$_{2}$ ($T_c=38$ K). In the normal state, the imaginary part of the dynamic susceptibility, $χ^{\prime\prime}(Q,ω)$, shows magnetic anisotropy for energies below $\sim$7 meV with c-axis polarized spin excitations larger than that of the in-plane component. Upon entering into the superconducting state, previous unpolarized INS experiments have shown that spin gaps at $\sim$5 and 0.75 meV open at wave vectors $Q=(0.5,0.5,0)$ and $(0.5,0.5,1)$, respecti…
Superconducting epitaxial films of Fe-based layered arsenide, Co-doped SrFe2As2, were grown at 700oC on mixed perovskite (La, Sr)(Al, Ta)O3 (001) single-crystal substrates by pulsed-laser deposition. Both the epitaxial film and an (001)-oriented film grown at 600oC exhibited superconducting transitions at ~ 20 K. The zero-resistance states of the epitaxial film were sustained under a magnetic field (H) of 9 T at 9 K when H was parallel to the c-axis, while they were sustained at higher temperatures up to 10 K for H parallel to the a-axis. This is the first demonstration of superconducting thin…
Motivated by recent experimental findings, we investigate the evolution of the superconducting gap anisotropy in 122 iron pnictides as a function of hole doping. Employing both a functional and a weak coupling renormalization group approach (FRG and WRG), we analyse the Fermi surface instabilities of an effective 122 model band structure at different hole dopings x, and derive the gap anisotropy from the leading superconducting instability. In the transition regime from collinear magnetism to s_{\pm}-wave, where strong correlations are present, we employ FRG to identify a non- monotonous chang…
The influence of low-level Pr substitution in Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O(7-delta) single crystals on the anisotropy of the superconducting state parameters was investigated by torque magnetometry in magnetic fields of up to 9 T. An averaged anisotropy parameter, γ, of 7.4 was found and no influence of the Pr ion concentration on γwas observed up to a Pr content of 2.4%. A pronounced maximum at angles between 0.5 and 1 degree out of the ab-plane was observed in all crystals in the irreversible angular dependence of the torque. This maximum is attributed to intrinsic pinning associated with kinked vortices.…
The temperature and angle dependent resistivity of Ba(Fe$_{0.75}$Ru$_{0.25}$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals were measured in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The temperature dependent resistivity with the magnetic field aligned parallel to c-axis and ab-planes allow us to derive the slope of d$H_{c2}^{ab}/dT$ and d$H_{c2}^c/dT$ near $T_c$ yielding an anisotropy ratio $Γ=dH_{c2}^{ab}/dT/dH_{c2}^c/dT \approx$ 2. By scaling the curves of resistivity vs. angle measured at a fixed temperature but different magnetic fields within the framework of the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory, we obtained the anisot…
We report superconducting anisotropy measurements in the electron-doped high-$T_{c}$ superconductors (HTSCs) Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-y}$ (PCCO, $x$ = 0.15 and 0.17) with applied magnetic field ($H_{0}$) up to 28 T. Our results show that the upper critical field [$H_{c2}(T)$] is highly anisotropic, and as temperature $T$ $\rightarrow$ 0 the value of it at $H_{0}$ $\parallel$ $c$ [$H_{c2,\parallel c}$(0)] is far less than the Pauli limit, which is very different from that at $H_{0}$ $\perp$ $c$. The $H_{c2}(0)$ character along with the evaluated zero $T$ coherence length $[ξ_{ab(c)}(0)]$ and p…
In-plane anisotropy of electrical resistivity was studied in samples of the hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ in the composition range $0.21 \leq x \leq 0.26$ where anisotropy changes sign. Low-temperature ($\sim$20~K) irradiation with relativistic 2.5 MeV electrons was used to control the level of disorder and residual resistivity of the samples. Modification of the stress-detwinning technique enabled measurements of the same samples before and after irradiation, leading to conclusion of anisotropic character of predominantly inelastic scattering processes. Our main finding is that the r…
We investigate a chiral d-density wave (CDDW) mean field Hamiltonian in momentum space, which also includes the in-plane hopping anisotropy parameter e, for the under-doped YBCO to explore the possibility of quantum oscillations (QO) in the specific heat in the presence of a changing magnetic field (B). The inclusion is motivated by the experimental signature of nematic order found in cuprates in neutron scattering experiments of Hinkov et al. (see Ref.[10]). We obtain the Fermi surface topologies, without and with magnetic field background, including the elastic scattering by impurities in th…
In order to unravel a role of doping in the iron-based superconductors, we investigated the in-plane resistivity for BaFe$_2$As$_2$ doped at either of the three different lattice sites, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, and Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, focusing on the doping effect in the low-temperature antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic (AFO) phase. A major role of doping in the high-temperature paramagnetic/tetragonal (PT) phase is known to change the Fermi surface by supplying charge carriers or by exerting chemical pressure. In the AFO phase, we found a clear corr…
The temperature dependence of the upper critical magnetic field (Hc2) in a BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 single crystal was determined via resistivity, for the inter-plane (H^ab) and in-plane (H//ab) directions in pulsed and static magnetic fields of up to 60 T. Suppressing superconductivity in a pulsed magnetic field at 3He temperatures permits us to construct an H-T phase diagram from quantitative Hc2(0) values and determine its behavior in low temperatures. Hc2(0) with H//ab (Hc2//(0)) and H^ab (Hc2^(0)) are ~ 55 T and 50 T respectively. These values are ~ 1.2 - 1.4 times larger than the weak-coupling …
We have investigated the superconducting(SC)-gap anisotropy for several Ba-doped KFe$_2$As$_2$ samples using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the SC-gap anisotropy and node positions drastically change with a small amount of Ba doping. Our results totally exclude a possibility of $d$-wave symmetry and strongly suggest that both spin and orbital fluctuations are important for the paring interaction in the Ba-doped K122.
We report the results from a thermopower and a Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of the infinite CuO2 layer electron doped high temperature superconducting cuprate (HTSC), Sr0.9La0.1CuO2. We find that the temperature dependence of the thermopower, S(T), is different from that observed in the hole doped HTSC. In particular, we find that dS(T)/dT is positive above ~120 K. However, we show that S(T) can still be described by the same model developed for the hole doped HTSC and hence S(T) is not anomalous and does not imply phonon mediated pairing as has previously been suggested. The Cu N…
Sr$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and the related compounds Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ have attracted considerable interest, as these materials may be realizations of unconventional topological superconductors. Superconductivity with T$_c$ ~ 3 K in Sr$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ arises upon intercalation of Sr into the layered topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Here we elucidate the anisotropy of the normal and superconducting state of Sr$_{0.1}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ with angular dependent magnetotransport and thermodynamic measurements. High resolution x-ray diffraction studies underline the high crystalline qua…
We study the single hole tt't''J-model numerically to address the momentum space anisotropy found in doped Mott insulators. A simple two band picture to understand how the doped hole is screened by the spin background in states of different momenta is proposed. In this picture, the disparity between the nodal and antinodal regions, observed by experiments in the underdoped cuprate superconductors, follows from local energetic considerations and amounts to the distinction between well defined quasiparticle behavior and spin-charge separation related phenomenology.
We present the resistively-determined upper critical field H^ρ_{c2}(T) and the irreversibility lines H^ρ_{irr}(T) of various high-T_c cuprates, deduced from measurements in 61-T pulsed magnetic fields applied parallel to the c-axis. The SHAPE of both H^ρ_{c2}(T) and H^ρ_{irr}(T) depends monotonically on the anisotropy of the material and none of the samples show saturation of H^ρ(T) at low temperatures. The anomalous positive curvature, d^2 H^ρ/dT^2 > 0, is the strongest in materials with the largest normal-state anisotropy, regardless of whether anisotropy is varied by changing the carrier co…
Here, we present an electrical transport study in single crystals of LaFe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$AsO ($T_c \simeq 9.1$ K) under high magnetic fields. In contrast to most of the previously reported Fe based superconductors, and despite its relatively low $T_c$, LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO shows a superconducting anisotropy which is comparable to those seen for instance in the cuprates or $γ_H = H_{c2}^{ab}/H_{c2}^{c} = m_c/m_{ab} \simeq 9$, where $m_c/m_{ab}$ is the effective mass anisotropy. Although, in the present case and as in all Fe based superconductors, $γ\rightarrow 1$ as $T \rightarrow 0$. Unde…
In this paper we report the superconductivity above 40 K in the electron doping single crystal Ca1-xRexFe2As2 (Re = La, Ce, Pr). The x-ray diffraction patterns indicate high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. the resistivity anomaly in the parent compound CaFe2As2 is completely suppressed by partial replacement of Ca by rare earth and a superconducting transition reaches as high as 43 K, which is higher than the value in electron doping FeAs-122 compounds by substituting Fe ions with transition metal, even surpasses the highest values observed in hole doping systems with a transition …
The recent realisations of hydrogen doped $Ln$FeAsO ($Ln$=Nd and Sm) superconducting epitaxial thin films call for further investigation of their structural and electrical transport properties. Here, we report on the microstructure of a NdFeAs(O,H) epitaxial thin film and its temperature, field, and orientation dependencies of the resistivity and the critical current density $J_{\rm c}$. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ is comparable to NdFeAs(O,F). Transmission electron microscopy investigation supported that hydrogen is homogenously substituted for oxygen. A high self-f…
We addressed the inconsistency between the electron mass anisotropy ratios determined by the far-infrared experiments and DC conductivity measurements. By eliminating possible sources of error and increasing the sensitivity and resolution in the far-infrared reflectivity measurement on the single crystalline and on the polycrystalline La1.84Sr0.16CuO4, we have unambiguously identified that the source of the mass anisotropy problem is in the estimation of the free electron density involved in the charge transport and superconductivity. In this study we found that only 2.8 % of the total doping-…
We present a study of the magnetic susceptibility in carefully detwinned La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4 single crystals in the lightly-doped region (x=0-0.03), which demonstrates a remarkable in-plane anisotropy of the spin system. This anisotropy is found to persist after the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order is destroyed by hole doping, suggesting that doped holes break the AF order into domains in which the spin alignment is kept essentially intact. It turns out that the freezing of the spins taking place at low temperatures is also notably anisotropic, implying that the "spin-glass" feature is …
The anisotropic properties of an optimally doped Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-δ} single crystal have been studied both below and above the critical temperature Tc via the resistivity measurement in magnetic field H up to 12 T. By scaling the conductivity fluctuation around the superconducting transition, the upper critical field H_{c2}(T) has been determined for field parallel to the c-axis or to the basal ab-plane. The anisotropy factor γ={H_c2||ab}/{H_c2||c} is estimated to be about 8. In the normal state (50=<T=<180 K), the magnetoresistance (MR) basically follows an H^2 dependence and for H||c…
We use polarized inelastic neutron scattering to study the temperature and energy dependence of spin space anisotropies in the optimally hole-doped iron pnictide Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{\rm c}=38$ K). In the superconducting state, while the high-energy part of the magnetic spectrum is nearly isotropic, the low-energy part displays a pronouced anisotropy, manifested by a $c$-axis polarized resonance. We also observe that the spin anisotropy in superconducting Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ extends to higher energies compared to electron-doped BaFe$_{2-x}TM_{x}$As$_{2}$…
The missing hole packets near the Brillouin zone center render unique electronic structures to the heavily electron doped FeSe-based superconductors with Tc above 40 K. It challenges the existing scenario accounting for the nature of superconductivity in the iron-based family. Yet, one hurdle that has to be overcome is the materials complexity in the rather limited number of compounds. Here we report the growth of heavily electron doped Li-NH3 intercalated FeSe single crystals that are free of such complexities and allow access to the intrinsic superconducting properties. Our results show extr…
The in-plane anisotropy of resistivity has been investigated for Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$TM$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (TM-Ba122, TM$=$Cr, Mn, and Co) where the substitution sites are the same but the doped carriers are different for different TM elements. The Hall coefficient measurements indicated that hole carriers are effectively doped by Cr substitution but not by Mn substitution. It has been found that the resistivity difference $Δρ=ρ_{\rm b}-ρ_{\rm a}$ in the antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic (AFO) phase of Cr-Ba122 is initially positive but it turns to negative with increasing Cr content, whereas the positive…
We have performed angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy on the electron doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. A comparison of the leading edge midpoints between the superconducting and normal states reveals a small, but finite shift of 1.5-2 meV near the ($π$,0) position, but no observable shift along the zone diagonal near ($π$/2,$π$/2). This is interpreted as evidence for an anisotropic superconducting gap in the electron doped materials, which is consistent with the presence of d-wave superconducting order in this cuprate superconductor.
Superconductivity of Ca1-xLaxFe2As2 single crystals with various doping level were investigated via electromagnetic measurements for out-plane (H//c) and in-plane (H//ab) directions. Obvious double superconducting transitions, which can survive in magnetic fields up to several Tesla, were observed in the medium-doped (x = 0.13) sample. Two kinds of distinct Hc2 phase diagrams were established for the low superconducting phase with Tc lower than 15 K and the high superconducting phase with Tc of over 40 K, respectively. Both the two kinds of phase diagrams exist in the medium-doped sample. Unus…
We report the in-plane anisotropy of the Seebeck and Nernst coefficients as well as of the electrical resistivity determined for the series of the strain-detwinned single crystals of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. Two underdoped samples (x = 0.024, 0.045) exhibiting the transition from the tetragonal paramagnetic phase to the orthorhombic spin density wave (SDW) phase (at Ttr = 100 and 60 K, respectively) show an onset of the Nernst anisotropy at temperatures above 200 K, which is significantly higher than Ttr. In the optimally doped sample (x = 0.06) the transport properties also appear to be in-plane ani…
We report on the superconducting performance of the ex-situ SiC doped MgB2 monofilamentary tapes. Polycrystalline powders of MgB2 doped with 5 and 10 wt% SiC were synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction route and characterized for their superconducting performance. It is found that superconducting parameters i.e. upper critical field (Hc2), irreversibility field (Hirr) and critical current density (Jc) are all improved significantly with SiC addition. Also it was found that relatively lower synthesis temperature (700 C) resulted in further improved superconducting parameters. As synth…
The aim of this work is to investigate the temperature dependencies both in CuO2-plane and out-of plane resistivities in electron-doped Nd2-xCexCuO4 for x from 0.135 up to 0.15 in order to analyze the anisotropy of the electrical transport in the process of the evolution from antiferromagnetic (AF) order in underdoped region to superconducting (SC) order in optimally doped region.
Nb doped SrTiO3, the first discovered two-gap superconductor, is shown to be the most unconventional one of the known multiband superconductors, since the smaller of the two superconducting gaps follows a non BCS temperature dependence. Such a behavior stems from two cooperating effects: an extreme anisotropy in the frequency dependent interactions, involving one very soft mode and an almost vanishing interband interaction. In contrast to all other multiband superconductors, the temperature dependence of the superfluid density of Nb doped SrTiO3 is predicted to exhibit an inflection point clos…
Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations were investigated in the normal states of the parent ($x = 0$), under-doped ($x = 0.04$) and optimally-doped ($x = 0.06$) Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals using inelastic neutron scattering technique. For all the doping levels, quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations were observed as a broad peak localized at ${\it Q} = (1/2, 1/2, l)$. At lower energies, the peak shows an apparent anisotropy in the $hk0$ plane; longitudinal peak widths are considerably smaller than transverse widths. The anisotropy is larger for the higher doping l…
By means of one-step model calculations the strong in-plane anisotropy seen in angle-resolved photoemission of the well-known iron pnictide prototype compounds BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ in their low-temperature antiferromagnetic phases is investigated. The fully-relativistic calculations are based on the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker-Green function approach combined with the coherent potential approximation alloy theory to account for the disorder induced by Co substitution on Fe sites in a reliable way. The results of the calculations can be compared directly to experimental …
The electrical conductivity anisotropy of the sigma-bands is calculated for the (Mg,Sc)B2 system using a virtual crystal model. Our results reveal that anisotropy drops with relatively little scandium content (< 30%); this behaviour coincides with the lowering of Tc and the reduction of the Kohn anomaly. This anisotropy loss is also found in the Al and C doped systems. In this work it is argued that the anisotropy, or 2D character, of the sigma-bands is an important parameter for the understanding of the high Tc found in MgB2.
Using the Kubo-Greenwood formalism the resistivity anisotropy for electron doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, hole doped (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ and isovalently doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ in their antiferromagnetic state has been calculated in order to clarify the origin of this important phenomenon. The results show good agreement with experiment for all cases without considering impurity states extending over several unit cells or temperature induced spin fluctuations. From this it is concluded that the resistivity anisotropy at low temperatures is primarily caused by an i…
We performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on electron-doped high-Tc superconductor Pr0.89LaCe0.11CuO4 to study the anisotropy of the superconducting gap. The observed momentum dependence is basically consistent with the dx2-y2-wave symmetry, but obviously deviates from the monotonic dx2-y2 gap function. The maximum gap is observed not at the zone boundary, but at the hot spot where the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation strongly couples to the electrons on the Fermi surface. The present experimental results unambiguously indicate the spin-mediated pairing mechanism…
Phonon or electron mediated weak BCS attraction is enough to have high critical temperature if a van Hove anomaly is at work. This could apply to electron doped compounds and also to compounds with CuO$_2$ planes overdoped in holes, where $T_c$ decreases with increasing doping. If phonons dominate, it should lead to an anisotropic but mainly $s$ superconductive gap, as observed recently in overdoped LaSrCuO, and probably also in electron doped compounds. If electrons dominate, a $d$ gap should develop as observed in a number of cases. In the underdoped range, the observed decrease of $T_c$ wit…
We performed high-field magnetotransport and magnetization measurements on a single crystal of the 122-phase iron pnictide Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. Unlike the HTS cuprates and 1111-phase oxypnictides, Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 showed practically no broadening of the resistive transitions under magnetic fields up to 45 T. The mass anisotropy gamma = Hc2ab/Hc2c deduced from the slopes of the upper critical field dHc2ab/dT = 4.9T/K and dHc2c/dT = 2.5T/K decreases from ~2 near Tc, to ~1.5 at lower temperatures. We observed the irreversibility field close to Hc2, and a rather unusual symmetric volume pinning force…
We measure the penetration depth of optimally doped and underdoped La2-xCexCuO4 in the millimeter frequency domain (4 - 7 cm-1) and for temperatures 2 K < T < 300 K. The penetration depth as function of temperature reveals significant changes on electron doping. It shows quadratic temperature dependence in underdoped samples, but increases almost exponentially at optimal doping. Significant changes in the gap anisotropy (or even in the gap symmetry) may account for this transition.
We investigate the superconducting properties and possible nematic superconductivity of self-doped BiCh2-based (Ch: S, Se) superconductor CeOBiS1.7Se0.3 through the measurements of in-plane anisotropy of magnetoresistance. Single crystals of CeOBiS1.7Se0.3 were grown using a flux method. Single-crystal structural analysis revealed that the crystal structure at room temperature is tetragonal (P4/nmm). Bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature of 3.3 K was observed through electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements. Investigation of anisotropy of upper critical field sugges…
Anisotropies of electrical resistivity, upper critical field, London penetration depth and critical currents have been measured in single crystals of the optimally doped iron pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, $x$=0.074 and $T_c \sim$23 K. The normal state resistivity anisotropy was obtained by employing both the Montgomery technique and direct measurements on samples cut along principal crystallographic directions. The ratio $γ_ρ = ρ_c /ρ_a$ is about 4$\pm$1 just above $T_c$ and becomes half of that at room temperature. The anisotropy of the upper critical field, $γ_{H} =…
Both the in-plane and the out-of-plane resistivities (ρ_{ab} and ρ_{c}) are measured in high-quality La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (LSCO) single crystals in the lightly- to moderately-doped region, x = 0.01 to 0.10, and the resistivity anisotropy is determined. In all the samples studied, the anisotropy ratio ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} quickly increases with decreasing temperature, although in non-superconducting samples the strong localization effect causes ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} to decrease at low temperatures. Most notably, it is found that ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} at moderate temperatures (100 - 300 K) is almost completely independe…
With molecular beam epitaxy and topotactic chemical reaction, we prepared NdFeAs(O,H) epitaxial thin films with various hydrogen concentrations on 5° vicinal cut MgO substrates. By measuring the resistivities along the longitudinal and transversal directions, the ab plane and the c axis resistivities (\{rho}_ab and \{rho}_c) were obtained. The resistivity anisotropy γ_\{rho}=\{rho}_c \ \{rho}_ab of NdFeAs(O,H) with various hydrogen concentrations was compared with that of NdFeAs(O,F). At the H concentrations which led to superconducting transition temperatures Tc over 40 K, γ_\r{ho} recorded ~…
Spontaneous rotational-symmetry breaking in the superconducting state of doped $\mathrm{Bi}_2\mathrm{Se}_3$ has attracted significant attention as an indicator for topological superconductivity. In this paper, high-resolution calorimetry of the single-crystal $\mathrm{Sr}_{0.1}\mathrm{Bi}_2\mathrm{Se}_3$ provides unequivocal evidence of a two-fold rotational symmetry in the superconducting gap by a \emph{bulk thermodynamic} probe, a fingerprint of nematic superconductivity. The extremely small specific heat anomaly resolved with our high-sensitivity technique is consistent with the material's …
Electronic and magnetic properties of the heavily H-doped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ $(x\sim0.5 )$ were studied in the framework of the density functional theory combined with the dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT). We found a stripe-like-ordered structure of hydrogen and oxygen atoms, as a ground state, with the same configuration as the antiferromagnetic (AF) order. The new configuration could explain the existing experimental results related to the heavily H-doped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$, such as an in-plane electronic anisotropy and a non-uniform magnetic behavior. A significant anisotropy was …
Cd-doped La(O,F)BiS2 single crystals were grown using a CsCl/KCl flux. The grown crystals have a plate-like shape with ~1-2 mm square size in a well-developed ab-plane. The Cd doping in the crystals was successfully characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis techniques. The superconductivity of La(O,F)BiS2 was gradually suppressed with Cd doping. The superconducting transition temperature with zero resistivity of La(O0.54F0.46)(Bi0.92Cd0.08)S2 was 2.3 K. The Cd doping does not change the superconducting anisotropy so much, albeit the considerable suppres…
Large single crystals of La-doped CaFe2As2 were successfully synthesized by the FeAs self-flux method. The x-ray diffraction patterns suggest high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. By substitution of trivalent La3+ ions for divalent Ca2+, the resistivity anomaly in the parent compound CaFe2As2 is completely suppressed and a superconducting transition reaches the value of 42.7 K, which is higher than that of about 30 K reported in Saha S. R. et al., arXiv:1105.4798v1. The upper critical field has been determined with the magnetic field along ab-plane and c-axis, yielding an anisotropy…
In the low doping range of $x$ from 0.01 to 0.06 in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, a narrow electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) line has been investigated. This line is distinct from the known broad line, both due to probing Mn$^{2+}$ ions. The narrow line is ascribed to metallic regions in the material, and its intensity increases exponentially upon cooling below $\sim$ 150 K. The activation energy deduced $Δ$ = 460(50) K is nearly the same as that found in the doped superconducting regime by Raman and neutron scattering. The intensity of the narrow EPR line follows the same temperature depen…
We use inelastic neutron scattering with spin polarization analysis to study the magnetic excitations in the normal and superconducting states of YBa2Cu3O6.9. Polarization analysis allows us to determine the spin polarization of the magnetic excitations and to separate them from phonon scattering. In the normal state, we find unambiguous evidence of magnetic excitations over the 10-60meV range of the experiment with little polarization dependence to the excitations. In the superconducting state, the magnetic response is enhanced near the "resonance energy" and above. At lower energies, 10<E<30…
The effects of the application of a magnetic field on the diagonal stripe spin-glass phase is studied in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (x=0.014 and 0.024). With increasing magnetic field, the magnetic elastic intensity at the diagonal incommensurate (DIC) positions (1,\pmε,0) decreases as opposed to the increase seen in superconducting samples. This diminution in intensity with increasing magnetic field originates from a spin reorientation transition, which is driven by the antisymmetric exchange term in the spin Hamiltonian. On the other hand, the transition temperature, the incommensurabil…
