Broad Emission Lines are the most characteristic features of Active Galaxies, but the mechanism of creating a medium able to emit these intense lines is not quite clear. Observations clearly indicate that the motion of the material is predominantly Keplerian, with traces of inflow and clear signatures of outflow, but this still does not point out whether the lines partially come from the disk surface, or exclusively from the circumnuclear material, and whether this material originates from the disk as a wind, or comes, at least partially, from outside. I review the basic scenarios for the formation of the Broad Line Region (BLR), and the recent progress in modelling the physical conditions in the emitting medium. The current state is the the outer radius of the BLR is fixed by the dust sublimation temperature in the medium exposed to the irradiation from the central source, the inner radius is likely fixed by the dust sublimation temperature in the atmosphere of the non-illuminated accretion disk, and the local cloud density is a universal number fixed by the radiation pressure confinement. The time-dependent aspects of the BLR formation, however, still wait for serious modelling effort matching the quality of the observational data.
Modelling the broadband emission of jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN) constitutes one of the main research topics of extragalactic astrophysics in the multi-wavelength and multi-messenger domain. We present agnpy, an open-source python package modelling the radiative processes of relativistic particles accelerated in the jets of active galactic nuclei. The package includes classes describing the galaxy components responsible for line and thermal emission and calculates the absorption due to $γγ$ pair production on several photon fields. agnpy aims at extending the effort of modelling and int…
We discuss the polarization of broad emission lines in the type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The polarization depends on the geometry of the broad line region (BLR), and also on the polarization mechanism, or distribution of the scattering material. Therefore the polarization measurements can indicate the geometry of the BLR and the mechanism of polarization (equatorial or polar scattering). In addition, the polarization angle (PA) shape across the line profile can be used to measure the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass, and constrain the BLR characteristics. We give an overview of ours…
We show that individual (single-epoch) spectra of AGN can constrain some of the geometry and dynamics of the AGN broad line region. Studies of the cosmic influence of supermassive black holes are limited by the current large uncertainties in the determination of black hole masses. One dominant limitation is the unknown geometry, dynamics and line-of-sight inclination of the broad line region, used to probe the central black hole mass. Recent progress has been made to constrain the spatial and kinematic structure of the broad line region using dynamical modelling of AGN monitoring data and an u…
Outflows in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are crucial to understand in investigating the co-evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies since outflows may play an important role as an AGN feedback mechanism. Based on the archival UV spectra obtained with HST and IUE, we investigate outflows in the broad-line region (BLR) in low-redshift AGNs (z < 0.4) through the detailed analysis of the velocity profile of the CIV emission line. We find a dependence of the outflow strength on the Eddington ratio and the BLR metallicity in our low-redshift AGN sample, which is consist…
As a major feature in spectra of active galactic nuclei, broad emission lines deliver information of kinematics and spatial distributions of ionized gas surrounding the central supermassive black holes (SMBHs), that is the so-called broad-line regions (BLRs). There is growing evidence for appearance of spiral arms in the BLRs. It has been shown by reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns that the characterized radius of BLRs overlaps with that of self-gravitating regions of accretion disks. In the framework of the WKB approximation, we show robust properties of observational features of the spiral…
Reverberation mapping (RM) is a widely-used method for probing the physics of broad-line regions (BLRs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). There are increasing preliminary evidences that the RM behaviors of broad emission lines are influenced by BLR densities, however, the influences have not been investigated systematically from theoretical perspective. In the present paper, we adopt locally optimally emitting cloud model and use CLOUDY to obtain the one-dimensional transfer functions of the prominent UV and optical emission lines for different BLR densities. We find that the influences of BLR…
Spectropolarimetric efforts in the last few years have provided an efficient method that is based on the profiles of the polarization plane position angle of broad emission lines in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Here we present black hole measurements of SBS 1419+538 using spectropolarimetric observations in the Mg II spectral band. The observations are performed by 6m telescope of SAO RAS using SCORPIO-2. We found a good agreement for the estimated supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass for this object using spectropolarimetry when compared with the mass obtained using other methods.
There has recently been growing evidence that broad-line regions (BLRs) in active galactic nuclei have regular substructures, such as spiral arms, which are supported by the fact that the radii of BLRs measured by RM observations are generally consistent with the self-gravitating regions of accretion disks. We have shown in Paper I that the spiral arms excited by the gravitational instabilities in these regions may exist in some disk-like BLRs. As the second paper of the series, we investigate the loosely wound spiral arms excited by gravitational instabilities in disk-like BLRs and present th…
Constraining UV Continuum Slopes of Active Galactic Nuclei With CLOUDY Models of Broad Line Region EUV Emission Lines
In this paper three dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of AGN jets are presented to investigate the FR I/FR II dichotomy. Three simulations are presented which illustrates the difference in morphology for high/low Lorentz factor injection as well as a stratified background medium. Lorentz factors of 10 and 1.0014 were used for the high and low Lorentz factor cases respectively. The hydrodynamic simulations show a division in the morphology of jets based on their initial injection luminosity. An additional simulation was set up to investigate the evolution of the low Lorentz fact…
A new, complete sample of 14,584 broad-line AGNs at $z<0.35$ is presented, which are uncovered homogeneously from the complete database of galaxies and quasars observed spectroscopically in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Seventh Data Release. The stellar continuum is properly removed for each spectrum with significant host absorption line features, and careful analyses of the emission-line spectra, particularly in the H$\rm α$ and H$\rm β$ wavebands, are carried out. The broad Balmer emission line, particularly, H$\rm α$, is used to indicate the presence of an AGN. The broad H$\rm α$ lines have …
While modelling the galactic chemical evolution (GCE) of stable elements provides insights to the formation history of the Galaxy and the relative contributions of nucleosynthesis sites, modelling the evolution of short-lived radioisotopes (SLRs) can provide supplementary timing information on recent nucleosynthesis. To study the evolution of SLRs, we need to understand their spatial distribution. Using a 3-dimensional GCE model, we investigated the evolution of four SLRs: Mn-53, Fe-60, Hf-182, and Pu-244 with the aim of explaining detections of recent (within the last $\approx$1-20 Myr) depos…
Radial-dependent Responsivity of Broad-line Regions in Active Galactic Nuclei: Observational Consequences for Reverberation Mapping and Black Hole Mass Measurements
Ultraviolet (UV) line driven winds may be an important part of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback process, but understanding their impact is hindered by the complex nature of the radiation hydrodynamics. Instead, we have taken the approach pioneered by Risaliti & Elvis, calculating only ballistic trajectories from radiation forces and gravity, but neglecting gas pressure. We have completely re-written their QWIND code using more robust algorithms, and can now quickly model the acceleration phase of these winds for any AGN spectral energy distribution spanning UV and X-ray wavebands. We…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are one of the most luminous objects in the Universe, emitting powerful continuum and line emission across all wavelength bands. They represent an important link in the investigations of the galaxy evolution and cosmology. The resolving of the AGN inner structure is still a difficult task with current instruments, therefore the spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry are crucial tools to investigate these objects and their components, such as the properties of the supermassive black hole, the broad line region, and the dusty torus. In this review, we present the result…
Context. Continuum time delays from accretion disks in active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been proposed long time ago as a tool for measuring distances to the monitored sources. However, the method faces serious problems as a number of effects must be taken into account, including the contribution from the Broad Line Region (BLR). Aims. In this paper, we model the expected time delays when both the disk reprocessing of the incident X-ray flux and further reprocessing by the BLR are included, with the aim to see if the two effects can be disentangled. Methods. We use simple response function for …

The spectra of active galactic nuclei exhibit broad-emission lines that presumably originate in the Broad-Line Region (BLR) with gaseous-dusty clouds in a predominantly Keplerian motion around the central black hole. Signatures of both inflow and outflow motion are frequently seen. The dynamical character of BLR is consistent with the scenario that has been branded as the Failed Radiatively Accelerated Dusty Outflow (FRADO; Czerny & Hryniewicz 2011). In this scheme, frequent high-velocity impacts of BLR clouds falling back onto the underlying accretion disk are predicted. The impact velocities…
Broad emission lines are the most characteristic features in the spectra of active galaxies. They mostly show either a single-peaked or double-peaked profiles; and originate from a complex dynamics of the likely discrete clouds moving in a spatially extended region so-called Broad Line Region (BLR). We follow a non-hydrodynamical single-cloud approach to the BLR dynamics based on the dust-driving model of Czerny & Hryniewicz. We previously showed in details that the 2.5D version of the model could provide us with the 3D geometry of the BLR. In this paper, we provide a large grid of results bas…
Most results of the reverberation monitoring of active galaxies showed a universal scaling of the time delay of the Hbeta emission region with the monochromatic flux at 5100 A, with very small dipersion. Such a scaling favored the dust-based formation mechanism of the Broad Line Region (BLR). Recent reverberation measurements showed that actually a significant fraction of objects exhibits horter lags than the previously found scaling. Here we demonstrate that these shorter lags can be explained by the old concept of scaling of the BLR size with the ionization parameter. Assuming a universal va…
Broad-line regions (BLR) are one of the main components that constitute the phenomenological picture of active galaxies near the vicinity of the accreting supermassive black holes. Both theoretical and observational studies have shown that the BLR is made of dense, ionized gas clumps that have a strong virialized distribution at parsec-scale distances from the nuclei. Using a theoretically motivated photoionized gas model, I constrain the ionisation parameter (U) and cloud density (n$_{\rm{H}}$) as a function of the strength of the FeII emission. Recent observations in the reverberation mappin…
The profiles of the broad emission lines of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the time delays in their response to changes in the ionizing continuum ("lags") give information about the structure and kinematics of the inner regions of AGNs. Line profiles are also our main way of estimating the masses of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs). However, the profiles often show ill-understood, asymmetric structure and velocity-dependent lags vary with time. Here we show that partial obscuration of the broad-line region (BLR) by outflowing, compact, dusty clumps produces asymmetries and velocity-depe…
The structure of the broad line region (BLR) is an essential ingredient in the determination of active galactic nuclei (AGN) virial black hole masses, which in turn are important to study the role of black holes in galaxy evolution. Constraints on the BLR geometry and dynamics can be obtained from velocity-resolved studies using reverberation mapping data (i.e. monitoring data). However, monitoring data are observationally expensive and only available for a limited sample of AGN, mostly confined to the local Universe. Here we explore a new version of a Bayesian inference, physical model of the…
The basic unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGN) invokes an anisotropic obscuring structure, usually referred to as a torus, to explain AGN obscuration as an angle-dependent effect. We present a new grid of X-ray spectral templates based on radiative transfer calculations in neutral gas in an approximately toroidal geometry, appropriate for CCD-resolution X-ray spectra (FWHM > 130 eV). Fitting the templates to broadband X-ray spectra of AGN provides constraints on two important geometrical parameters of the gas distribution around the supermassive black hole: the average column density …
