We propose a microscopic magneto-electric model in which the coupling between spins and electric dipoles is mediated by lattice distortions. The magnetic sector is described by a spin S=1/2 Heisenberg model coupled directly to the lattice via a standard spin-Peierls term and indirectly to the electric dipole variables via the distortion of the surrounding electronic clouds. Electric dipoles are described by Ising variables for simplicity. We show that the effective magneto-electric coupling which arises due to the interconnecting lattice deformations is quite efficient in one-dimensional arrays. More precisely, we show using bosonization and extensive DMRG numerical simulations that increasing the magnetic field above the spin Peierls gap, a massive polarization switch-off occurs due to the proliferation of soliton pairs. We also analyze the effect of an external electric field $E$ when the magnetic system is in a gapped (plateau) phase and show that the magnetization can be electrically switched between clearly distinct values. More general quasi-one-dimensional models and two-dimensional systems are also discussed.
We report a global structural distortion in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ using spatially resolved optical second and third harmonic generation rotational anisotropy measurements. A symmetry lowering from an $I4_{1}/acd$ to $I4_{1}/a$ space group is observed both above and below the Néel temperature that arises from a staggered tetragonal distortion of the oxygen octahedra. By studying an effective super-exchange Hamiltonian that accounts for this lowered symmetry, we find that perfect locking between the octahedral rotation and magnetic moment canting angles can persist even in the presence of large non-cubi…
Uniquely in Cu2OSeO3, the Skyrmions, which are topologically protected magnetic spin vortex-like objects, display a magnetoelectric coupling and can be manipulated by externally applied electric (E) fields. Here, we explore the E-field coupling to the magnetoelectric Skyrmion lattice phase, and study the response using neutron scattering. Giant E-field induced rotations of the Skyrmion lattice are achieved that span a range of $\sim$25$^{\circ}$. Supporting calculations show that an E-field-induced Skyrmion distortion lies behind the lattice rotation. Overall, we present a new approach to Skyr…
One important aspect of the magneto-structural transition in MnCoGe and related materials is the reduction in saturation magnetization from the orthorhombic to the hexagonal phase. Here, by combining an element specific magnetization probe such as x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and band structure calculations, we show that the magnetic moment instability between orthorhombic and hexagonal structures originates from a reduction in the Mn sub-lattice magnetization. The consequences of the moment instability for the magnetocaloric effect are discussed.
In the quasi-2D electron systems of the layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) there is still a controversy about the nature of the transitions to charge-density wave (CDW) phases, i.e. whether they are described by a Peierls-type mechanism or by a lattice-driven model. By performing scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments on the canonical TMD-CDW systems, we have imaged the electronic modulation and the lattice distortion separately in 2H-TaS$_2$, TaSe$_2$, and NbSe$_2$. Across the three materials, we found dominant lattice contributions instead of the electronic modulation ex…
It is argued that the non-collinear orbital magnetism accompanying the orthorhombic distortion is an important ingredient which should be taken into consideration for making promising materials with the best magneto-optical characteristics on the basis of SrRuO$_3$.
Applying time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) spectroscopy and \emph{ab initio} calculations, we have investigated possible lattice instabilities in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ by studying the electric quadrupole interaction of a $^{111}$Cd probe at the Ru site. We find evidence for a dynamic lattice distortion, revealed from the observations of: (i) a rapidly fluctuating electric-field gradient (EFG) tensor of which the main component decreases with decreasing temperature, and (ii) a monotonic increase of the EFG asymmetry ($η$) below 300 K. We argue that the observed dynamic lattice…
We have performed synchrotron radiation X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements on magnetoelectric multiferroic CuFe1-xAlxO2 (x=0.0155), which has a proper helical magnetic structure with incommensurate propagation wave vector in the ferroelectric phase. The present measurements revealed that the ferroelectric phase is accompanied by lattice modulation with a wave number 2q, where q is the magnetic modulation wave number. We have calculated the Fourier spectrum of the spatial modulations in the local electric polarization using a microscopic model proposed by Arima [T. Arima, J. Phys. Soc. …
We discuss a model scenario for multiferroic systems of type II (collinear spins) where the electric dipolar order competes with a frustrated magnetic order in determining the elastic distortions of the lattice ion positions. High magnetic frustration due to second neighbors exchange and small spin easy-axis anisotropy lead to the appearance of the so called quantum magnetic plateau states. Increasing the magnetic field above the plateau border produces composite excitations, where fractionalized spin tertions arise together with spontaneous dipolar flips (in the form of domain walls) and enha…
Neutron scattering measurements on a magnetoresistive manganite La$_{0.75}$(Ca$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$)$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ show that uncorrelated dynamic polaronic lattice distortions are present in both the orthorhombic (O) and rhombohedral (R) paramagnetic phases. The uncorrelated distortions do not exhibit any significant anomaly at the O-to-R transition. Thus, both the paramagnetic phases are inhomogeneous on the nanometer scale, as confirmed further by strong damping of the acoustic phonons and by the anomalous Debye-Waller factors in these phases. In contrast, recent x-ray measurements and our …
We present a combined neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction study of the crystal and magnetic structure of VOCl. The occurrence of antiferromagnetic order in VOCl is accompanied by a monoclinic distortion. The high sensitivity of the magnetic interaction parameters on V-O-V bond angles and V-V distances yields strong magnetoelastic coupling which implies the structural distortion below T$_N$ as well as anomalous structural effects in the paramagnetic phase.
The crystal structure and the magnetism of BaMn$_2$O$_3$ have been studied by thermodynamic and by diffraction techniques using large single crystals and powders. BaMn$_2$O$_3$ is a realization of a $S = 5/2$ spin ladder as the magnetic interaction is dominant along 180$^\circ$ Mn-O-Mn bonds forming the legs and the rungs of a ladder. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility exhibits well-defined maxima for all directions proving the low-dimensional magnetic character in BaMn$_2$O$_3$. The susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction data, however, show that BaMn$_2$O$_3$ exh…
Electronic structure of the three-dimensional colossal magnetoresistive perovskite La1-xSrxMnO3 has been established using soft-X-ray ARPES with its intrinsically sharp definition of three-dimensional electron momentum. The experimental results show much weaker polaronic coupling compared to the bilayer manganites and are consistent with the GGA+U band structure. The experimental Fermi surface unveils the canonical topology of alternating three-dimensional electron spheres and hole cubes, with their shadow contours manifesting the rhombohedral lattice distortion. This picture has been confirme…
In this work we investigate the magnetic field dependence of Ag octahedra rotation (tilt) and B2g symmetric stretching modes frequency at different temperatures. Our field-dependent Raman investigation at 10K is interpreted by an ionic displacive nature of the magnetically induced ferroelectric phase transition. The frequency change of the Ag tilt is in agreement with the stabilization of the Mn-Gd spin arrangement, yielding the necessary conditions for the onset of ferroelectricity on the basis of the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The role of the Jahn-Teller cooperative interacti…
Using THz spectroscopy, we show that the spin-wave spectrum of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in its high-field canted antiferromagnetic state is well described by a spin model that violates rhombohedral symmetry. We demonstrate that the monoclinic distortion of the canted antiferromagnetic state is induced by the single-ion magnetoelastic coupling between the lattice and the two nearly anti-parallel spins. The revised spin model for BiFeO$_3$ contains two new single-ion anisotropy terms that violate rhombohedral symmetry and depend on the direction of the magnetic field.
Taking into account both the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion and the on-site electronic potential fluctuations in the orbital-degenerated double-exchange model, in which both the core-spin and the lattice distortion are treated classically, we investigate theoretically the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in manganites by considering the electronic localization effect. An inverse matrix method is developed for calculation in which we use the inverse of the transfer matrix to obtain the localization length. We find that within reasonable range of parameters, both the lattice effect and the poten…
A joint theoretical approach, combining macroscopic symmetry analysis with microscopic methods (density functional theory and model cluster Hamiltonian), is employed to shed light on magnetoelectricity in Ba2CoGe2O7. We show that the recently reported experimental trend of polarization guided by magnetic field can be predicted on the basis of phenomenological Landau theory. From the microscopic side, Ba2CoGe2O7 emerges as a prototype of a class of magnetoelectrics, where the cross coupling between magnetic and dipolar degrees of freedom needs, as main ingredients, the on-site spin-orbit coupli…
Raman scattering experiments on CdCr2S4 single crystals show pronounced anomalies in intensity and frequency of optical phonon modes with an onset temperature T*=130 K that coincides with the regime of giant magnetocapacitive effects. A loss of inversion symmetry and Cr off-centering are deduced from the observation of longitudinal optical and formerly infrared active modes for T<T_c=84 K. The intensity anomalies are attributed to the enhanced electronic polarizability of displacements that modulate the Cr-S distance and respective hybridization. Photo doping leads to an annihilation of the sy…
With a combined ab initio density functional and model Hamiltonian approach we establish that in the recently discovered multiferroic phase of the manganite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$ the polar distortion of Mn and O ions is stabilized via enhanced in-plane Mn-O hybridizations. The magnetic superexchange interaction is very sensitive to the polar bond-bending distortion, and we find that this dependence directly causes a strong magnetoelectric coupling. This novel mechanism for multiferroicity is consistent with the experimentally observed reduced ferroelectric polarization upon the onset o…
We present a general formalism of multipole descriptions under the space-time inversion group. We elucidate that two types of atomic toroidal multipoles, i.e., electric and magnetic, are fundamental pieces to express electronic order parameters in addition to ordinary electric and magnetic multipoles. By deriving quantum-mechanical operators for both toroidal multipoles, we show that electric (magnetic) toroidal multipole higher than dipole (monopole) can become a primary order parameter in a hybridized-orbital system. We also demonstrate emergent cross-correlated couplings between electric, m…
The band structure calculations in the GGA+U approximation show the presence of additional lattice distortions in the magnetically ordered phase of AgCrS$_2$. The magnetostriction leads to formation of the long and short Cr-Cr bonds in the case when respective Cr ions have the same or opposite spin projections. These changes of the Cr lattice are accompanied by distortions of the CrS$_6$ octahedra, which in its turn leads to development of the spontaneous electric polarization.
At low temperatures, Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enters a spin liquid state, despite expectations of magnetic order and/or a structural distortion. Using neutron scattering, we have discovered that in this spin liquid state an excited crystal field level is coupled to a transverse acoustic phonon, forming a hybrid excitation. Magnetic and phononlike branches with identical dispersion relations can be identified, and the hybridization vanishes in the paramagnetic state. We suggest that Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is aptly named a "magnetoelastic spin liquid" and that the hybridization of the excitations suppresses…
We present a simple two-dimensional model in which the lattice degrees of freedom mediate the interactions between magnetic moments and electric dipoles. This model reproduces basic features, such as a sudden electric polarization switch-off when a magnetic field is applied and the ubiquitous dimerized distortion patterns and magnetic $\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$ ordering, observed in several multiferroic materials of different composition. The list includes E-type manganites, RMnO$_3$, nickelates such as in YNiO$_3$ and other materials under strain, such as TbMnO$_3$. In spite of…
The thermodynamic properties of the ferromagnetic perovskite YTiO$_3$ are investigated by thermal expansion, magnetostriction, specific heat, and magnetization measurements. The low-temperature spin-wave contribution to the specific heat, as well as an Arrott plot of the magnetization in the vicinity of the Curie temperature $T_C\simeq27$ K, are consistent with a three-dimensional Heisenberg model of ferromagnetism. However, a magnetic contribution to the thermal expansion persists well above $T_C$, which contrasts with typical three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnets, as shown by a compariso…
The stability of the excitonic condensation at low temperature driven by a coupling of electrons to vibrational degrees of freedom in semimetal two-dimensional electronic system is discussed. In the framework of the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation, we derive a set of equations to determine both the excitonic condensate order parameter and lattice displacement self-consistently. By lowering temperature we find out a semimetal-insulator transition in the system if the coupling is large enough. The insulating state typifies an excitonic condensation accompanied by a finite lattice distort…
The nanoscopic magneto-electronic phase separation in doped La1-xSrxCoO3 perovskites was studied with local probes. The phase separation is directly observed by Mössbauer spectroscopy in the studied doping range of 0.05 <= x <= 0.25 both at room-temperature as well as in the low temperature magnetic phase. Extended with current synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopies, these data help to characterize the volume as well as the local electric and magnetic properties of the distinct phases. A simple model based on a random distribution of the doping Sr ions describes well both the evolution of the …
CuCrS2 is a triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a rhombohedral crystal structure. We report on neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction results which reveal a monoclinic lattice distortion at the magnetic transition and verify a magnetoelastic coupling. CuCrS2 is therefore an interesting material to study the influence of magnetism on the relief of geometrical frustration.
The correlation kinetic equation approach is developed that allows describing spin correlations in a material with hopping transport. The quantum nature of spin is taken into account. The approach is applied to the problem of the bipolaron mechanism of organic magnetoresistance (OMAR) in the limit of large Hubbard energy and small applied electric field. The spin relaxation that is important to magnetoresistance is considered to be due to hyperfine interaction with atomic nuclei. It is shown that the lineshape of magnetoresistance depends on short-range transport properties. Different model sy…
We investigated the nature of the freezing in the geometrically frustrated Heisenberg spin-glass Y2Mo2O7 by measuring the temperature dependence of the static internal magnetic field distribution above the spin-glass temperature, Tg, using the muSR technique. The evolution of the field distribution cannot be explained by changes in the spin susceptibility alone and suggests a lattice deformation. This possibility is addressed by numerical simulations of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian with magneto-elastic coupling at T>0.
A new microscopic mechanism of the magneto-electric (ME) effect based on the spin supercurrent is theoretically presented for non-collinear magnets. The close analogy between the superconductors (charge current) and magnets (spin current) is drawn to derive the distribution of the spin supercurrent and the resultant electric polarization. Application to the spiral spin structure is discussed.
Colossal magneto-resistance manganites are characterised by a complex interplay of charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. Formulating microscopic models for these compounds aims at meeting to conflicting objectives: sufficient simplification without excessive restrictions on the phase space. We give a detailed introduction to the electronic structure of manganites and derive a microscopic model for their low energy physics. Focussing on short range electron-lattice and spin-orbital correlations we supplement the modelling with numerical simulations.
Orthorhombically distorted perovskite manganites, RMnO3 with R being a trivalent rare-earth ion, exhibit a variety of magnetic and electric phases including multiferroic (i.e. concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric) phases and fascinating magnetoelectric phenomena. We theoretically study the phase diagram of RMnO3 by constructing a microscopic spin model, which includes not only the superexchange interaction but also the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI). Analysis of this model using the Monte-Carlo method reproduces the experimental phase diagrams as …
Experimental data for the magnetic susceptibility and magnetostriction of CuGeO_3 are analyzed within a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic model with nearest ({J_1}) and next-nearest neighbour interactions ({J_2}). We show that the ratio of the exchange constants in the antiferromagnetic chains of CuGeO_3 amounts to ${J_2}/{J_1}$ = 0.354(0.01), i.e. it is significantly larger than the critical value for the formation of a spontaneous gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum without lattice dimerization. The susceptibility data are reproduced by our numerical results over the temperature range fr…
We propose the idea of a spin-lattice liquid, in which spin and lattice degrees of freedom are strongly coupled and remain disordered and fluctuating down to low temperatures. We show that such a state arises naturally from a microscopic analysis of a class of molybdate pyrochlore compounds, and is driven by a giant magnetoelastic effect. Finally, we argue that this could explain some of the experimental features of Y$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$.
The Kitaev honeycomb model has been suggested as a useful starting point to describe the honeycomb iridates. However, the zigzag ordering seen in Na2IrO3 and the magnetic transition in Li2IrO3 have raised questions to their connection to the Kitaev model and to the microscopic origin of these magnetic states, given their structural similarities. Here we study how the magnetic phases near the Kitaev spin liquid are affected by the inclusion of trigonal distortion of the oxygen octahedra within a purely nearest neighbour model. Using a combination classical analysis and exact diagonalization we …
We present a study of the nearest--neighbor (nn) and next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) exchange constants between magnetic Cu centers of the spin-Peierls material CuGeO3. The dependence of these constants on the lattice parameters (modified e.g. by variation of temperature, pressure or doping) is calculated. Based on the observation that the bond angles are more susceptible than the bond lengths we propose the so-called ''accordion'' model for the description of the properties of CuGeO3. We show that the nn exchange constant in the CuO2 ribbon is very sensitive to the presence and position of the si…

Density functional based simulations are employed to explore magnetoelectric effects in iron-based oxides, showing a unique layered structure. We theoretically predict CaFeO2 to be a promising magnetoelectric, showing magnetically-controlled large electric polarization, possibly even above room temperature. The cross coupling between magnetic and dipolar degrees of freedom needs, as main ingredients, Fe-site spin-orbit coupling and a spin-dependent O p - Fe d hybridization, along with structural constraints related to the non-centrosymmetric point group and the peculiar geometry characterized …
We present a short critical overview of different microscopic models for nonrelativistic and relativistic magnetoelectric coupling including the so-called "spin current scenario", ab-initio calculations, and several recent microscopic approaches to a spin-dependent electric polarization in 3d oxides.
We present an atomic scale theory of lattice distortions using strain related variables and their constraint equations. Our approach connects constrained {\it atomic length} scale variations to {\it continuum} elasticity and describes elasticity at several length scales. We apply the approach to a two-dimensional square lattice with a monatomic basis, and find the elastic deformations and hierarchical atomic relaxations in the vicinity of a domain wall between two different homogeneous strain states. We clarify the microscopic origin of gradient terms, some of which are included phenomenologic…
A detailed analysis of the crystal structure in RETiO3 with RE = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Y reveals an intrinsic coupling between orbital degrees of freedom and the lattice which cannot be fully attributed to the structural deformation arising from bond-length mismatch. The TiO6 octahedra in this series are all irregular with the shape of the distortion depending on the RE ionic radius. These octahedron distortions vary more strongly with temperature than the tilt and rotation angles. Around the Ti magnetic ordering all compounds exhibit strong anomalies in the thermal-expansion coefficients, these…
The centrosymmetric tetragonal itinerant magnet EuAl$_{4}$ exhibits an intricate magnetic phase diagram including rhombic and square skyrmion-lattice (SkL) phases in the external magnetic field. Here, we report a multi-axis dilatometric investigation of EuAl$_{4}$ by means of a newly designed fiber-Bragg-grating technique complemented by a resonant x-ray scattering experiment, revealing anisotropic magnetostriction and magnetovolume effect associated with successive phase transitions. The rhombic and square SkL phases are found to possess $\sim$0.10% and $\sim$0.03% orthorhombic structural dis…
On the basis of ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we derive the underlying microscopic model Hamiltonian for TiOCl, a unique system that shows two consecutive phase transitions from a Mott insulator to a spin-Peierls insulator through a structurally incommensurate phase. We show with our model that the presence of magnetic frustration in TiOCl leads to a competition with the spin-Peierls distortion, which results in the novel incommensurate phase. In addition, our calculations indicate that the spin-Peierls state is triggered by adiabatic phonons, which is essential for u…
Magneto-electric multiferroics exemplified by TbMnO3 possess both magnetic and ferroelectric long-range order. The magnetic order is mostly understood, whereas the nature of the ferroelectricity has remained more elusive. Competing models proposed to explain the ferroelectricity are associated respectively with charge transfer and ionic displacements. Exploiting the magneto-electric coupling, we use an electric field to produce a single magnetic domain state, and a magnetic field to induce ionic displacements. Under these conditions, interference charge-magnetic X-ray scattering arises, encodi…
How the magnetoelectric coupling actually occurs on a microscopic level in multiferroic BiFeO3 is not well known. By using the high-resolution single crystal neutron diffraction techniques, we have determined the electric polarization of each individual elements of BiFeO3, and concluded that the magnetostrictive coupling suppresses the electric polarization at the Fe site below TN. This negative magnetoelectric coupling appears to outweigh the spin current contributions arising from the cycloid spin structure, which should produce a positive magnetoelectric coupling.
The kamiokite, Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$, is regarded as a promising material exhibiting giant magnetoelectric (ME) effect at the relatively high temperature $T$. Here, we explore this phenomenon on the basis of first-principles electronic structure calculations. For this purpose we construct a realistic model describing the behavior of magnetic Fe $3d$ electrons and further map it onto the isotropic spin model. Our analysis suggests two possible scenaria for Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. The first one is based on the homogeneous charge distribution of the Fe$^{2+}$ ions amongst tetrahedral ($t$) and octahedral …
Magnetism in the insulating BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ was examined through susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity and neutron diffraction measurements. After formation of a short-range magnetic correlation, a long-range ordering was observed below $T_{\rm N}\sim 255$ K. The transition is obscured by bulk properties. Magnetic moments ($\parallel a$) are arranged to form a Fe$_4$ ferromagnetic unit, and each Fe$_4$ stacks antiferromagnetically. This block magnetism is of the third type among magnetic structures of ferrous materials. The magnetic ordering drives unusually large distortion via magnetoela…
The Jahn-Teller effect is a fascinating and ubiquitous phenomenon in modern quantum physics and chemistry. We propose a class of oxides with melilite structure Ba$_2$TGe$_2$O$_7$ (T=V,Ni) where Jahn-Teller distortions are the main responsibles for the appearance of electric polarization. At the hearth of the proposed mechanism lies the lack of inversion symmetry displayed by tetrahedrally coordinated transition-metal ions, which allows for the condensation of polar Jahn-Teller distortions, at odds with octahedral coordination typical of conventional ferroelectric oxides with perovskite structu…
