The kamiokite, Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$, is regarded as a promising material exhibiting giant magnetoelectric (ME) effect at the relatively high temperature $T$. Here, we explore this phenomenon on the basis of first-principles electronic structure calculations. For this purpose we construct a realistic model describing the behavior of magnetic Fe $3d$ electrons and further map it onto the isotropic spin model. Our analysis suggests two possible scenaria for Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. The first one is based on the homogeneous charge distribution of the Fe$^{2+}$ ions amongst tetrahedral ($t$) and octahedral ($o$) sites, which tends to low the crystallographic P6$_3$mc symmetry through the formation of an orbitally ordered state. Nevertheless, the effect of the orbital ordering on interatomic exchange interactions does not seem to be strong, so that the magnetic properties can be described reasonably well by averaged interactions obeying the P6$_3$mc symmetry. The second scenario, which is supported by obtained parameters of on-site Coulomb repulsion and respects the P6$_3$mc symmetry, implies the charge disproportionation involving somewhat exotic $1+$ ionization state of the $t$-Fe sites (and $3+$ state of the $o$-Fe sites). Somewhat surprisingly, these scenarios are practically indistinguishable from the viewpoint of exchange interactions, which are practically identical in these two cases. However, the spin-dependent properties of the electric polarization are expected to be different due to the strong difference in the polarity of the Fe$^{2+}$-Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{1+}$-Fe$^{3+}$ bonds. Our analysis uncovers the basic aspects of the ME effect in Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. Nevertheless, the quantitative description should involve other ingredients, apparently related to the lattice and orbitals degrees of freedom.
Two prominent magnetoelectrics MnWO$_4$ and CuO possess low-temperature commensurate paraelectric magnetically ordered phase. Here using Monte Carlo simulations we show that the walls between the domains of this phase are ferroelectric with the same electric polarization direction and value as that in the magnetoelectric phases of these compounds. We also suggest that experimental observation of electric polarization of domain walls in MnWO$_4$ should help to determine the macroscopic interactions responsible for its magnetoelectric properties.
The thermodynamic, magnetic, dielectric, and magnetoelectric properties of HoFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and Ho$_{0.5}$Nd$_{0.5}$Fe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are investigated. Both compounds show a second order Neél transition above 30 K and a first order spin reorientation transition below 10 K. HoFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ develops a spontaneous electrical polarization below the Neél temperature (T$_N$) which is diminished in external magnetic fields. No magnetoelectric effect could be observed in HoFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$. In contrast, the solid solution Ho$_{0.5}$Nd$_{0.5}$Fe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ exhibits both, a spontaneous …
Phenomenological Landau analysis of predicted magnetoelectric fluorides: KMnFeF$_{6}$ and Ba$_{2}$Ni$_{7}$F$_{18}$
A giant magnetoelectric polarization is found in HoAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$. The polarization in transverse field geometry at 70 kOe reaches 3600 $μC/m^2$ which is significantly higher than reported values of linear magnetoelectric or even multiferroic compounds. The magnetostrictive effect is also measured and compared with the magnetoelectricity. The results show that spin-lattice coupling in HoAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ is extremely strong and that the magnetic field causes a large polar distortion of the ionic positions in the unit cell.
The magnetoelectric effect in the system $RAl_3(BO_3)_4$ ($R$ = Tb, Ho, Er, Tm) is investigated between 3 K and room temperature and at magnetic fields up to 70 kOe. We show a systematic increase of the magnetoelectric effect with decreasing magnetic anisotropy of the rare earth moment. A giant magnetoelectric polarization is found in the magnetically (nearly) isotropic $HoAl_3(BO_3)_4$. The polarization value in transverse field geometry at 70 kOe reaches 3600 $μC/m^2$ which is significantly higher than reported values for the field-induced polarization of linear magnetoelectric or even multi…
A series of manganites Tb1-xHoxMnO3 (0<=x<=0.6) with orthorhombic structure are synthesized and detailed investigations on their multiferroicity are performed. Successive magnetic transitions upon temperature variation are evidenced for all samples, and both the Mn3+ spiral spin ordering and rare-earth spin ordering are suppressed with increasing x. Significant enhancement of both the polarization and magnetoelectric response within 0.2<x<0.4 is observed, which may be ascribed to the competition possibly existing between spiral and E-type spin orders. Theoretical calculation is given based on …
The magnetic, thermodynamic, and pyroelectric properties of LiFeP$_2$O$_7$ single crystals are investigated with emphasis on the magnetoelectric interaction of the electrical polarization with the magnetic order parameter. The magnetic order below T$_N\simeq$ 27 K is found to be a canted antiferromagnet with a weak ferromagnetic component along the $b-$axis. A sharp peak of the pyroelectric current at T$_N$ proves the strong internal magnetoelectric interaction resulting in a sizable polarization decrease at the onset of magnetic order. The magnetoelectric effect in external magnetic fields co…
Obtaining strong magnetoelectric couplings in bulk materials and heterostructures is an ongoing challenge. We demonstrate that manganite heterostructures of the form ${\rm (Insulator)/(LaMnO_3)_n/(CaMnO_3)_n/(Insulator)}$ show strong multiferroicity in magnetic manganites where ferroelectric polarization is realized by charges leaking from ${\rm LaMnO_3}$ to ${\rm CaMnO_3}$ due to repulsion. Here, an effective nearest-neighbor electron-electron (electron-hole) repulsion (attraction) is generated by cooperative electron-phonon interaction. Double exchange, when a particle virtually hops to its …
Insulating helimagnetic Cu2OSeO3 shows sizeable magnetoelectric effects in its skyrmion phase. Using magnetization measurements, magneto-current analysis and dielectric spectroscopy, we provide a thorough investigation of magnetoelectric coupling, polarization and dielectric constants of the ordered magnetic and polar phases of single-crystalline Cu2OSeO3 in external magnetic fields up to 150 mT and at temperatures below 60 K. From these measurements we construct a detailed phase diagram. Especially, the skyrmion phase and the metamagnetic transition of helical to conical spin order are charac…
How the magnetoelectric coupling actually occurs on a microscopic level in multiferroic BiFeO3 is not well known. By using the high-resolution single crystal neutron diffraction techniques, we have determined the electric polarization of each individual elements of BiFeO3, and concluded that the magnetostrictive coupling suppresses the electric polarization at the Fe site below TN. This negative magnetoelectric coupling appears to outweigh the spin current contributions arising from the cycloid spin structure, which should produce a positive magnetoelectric coupling.
We report the discovery of linear magnetoelectric effect in the well-known green phase compound, Sm2BaCuO5, which crystallizes in the centrosymmetric orthorhombic (Pnma) structure. Magnetization and specific heat measurements reveal the long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of Cu2+ and Sm3+-ions moments at TN1 = 23 K and TN2 = 5 K, respectively. Applied magnetic field induces dielectric anomaly at TN1 whose magnitude increases with field, which results in significant (1.7%) magnetocapacitance effect. On the other hand, the dielectric anomaly observed in zero-applied magnetic field at TN2 shows…
Magnetic-field effect on the magnetic and electric properties in a chiral polar ordered corundum Ni$_2$InSbO$_6$ has been investigated. Single-crystal soft x-ray and neutron diffraction measurements confirm long-wavelength magnetic modulation. The modulation direction tends to align along the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the polar axis, suggesting that the nearly proper-screw type helicoid should be formed below 77\,K. The application of a high magnetic field causes a metamagnetic transition. In a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the polar axis, a helix-to-canted antiferromag…
We show that strong electromagnon peaks can be found in absorption spectra of non-collinear magnets exhibiting a linear magnetoelectric effect. The frequencies of these peaks coincide with the frequencies of antiferromagnetic resonances and the ratio of the spectral weights of the electromagnon and antiferromagnetic resonance is related to the ratio of the static magnetoelectric constant and magnetic susceptibility. Using a Kagome lattice antiferromagnet as an example, we show that frustration of spin ordering gives rise to magnetoelastic instabilities at strong spin-lattice coupling, which tr…
We report the discovery of a metamagnetic phase transition in a polar antiferromagnet Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ that occurs at 52 T. The new phase transition accompanies a colossal magnetoelectric effect, with a magnetic-field-induced polarization change of 0.3 $μ$C/cm$^2$, a value that is 4 times larger than for the spin-flop transition at 9 T in the same material, and also comparable to the largest magnetically-induced polarization changes observed to date. Via density-functional calculations we construct a full microscopic model that describes the data. We model the spin structures in all fields and cl…
We perform a combined experimental and theoretical study of a magnetic-field ($B$) induced evolution of magnetic and ferroelectric properties in an antiferromagnetic material Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$, whose structure is characterized by a staggered array of Cu$_4$O$_{12}$ magnetic units with convex geometry known as square cupola. Our experiments show a $B$-induced phase transition from a previously reported low-$B$ linear magnetoelectric phase to a new high-$B$ magnetoelectric phase, which accompanies a 90$^\circ$ flop of electric polarization and gigantic magnetodielectric effect. Moreover,…
The honeycomb antiferromagnet Co4Nb2O9 is known to exhibit an interesting magnetoelectric effect that the electric polarization rotates at the twice speed in the opposite direction relative to the rotation of the external magnetic field applied in the basal ab-plane. The spin-dependent electric dipole can be an origin of the magnetoelectric effect. It is described by the product of spin operators at different sites (type-I theory) or at the same site (type-II theory). We examine the electric polarization for the two cases on the basis of the symmetry analysis of the crystal structure of Co4Nb2…
We incorporate single crystal Fe$_3$O$_4$ thin films into a gated device structure and demonstrate the ability to control the Verwey transition with static electric fields. The Verwey transition temperature ($T_V$) increases for both polarities of the electric field, indicating the effect is not driven by changes in carrier concentration. Energetics of induced electric polarization and/or strain within the Fe$_3$O$_4$ film provide a possible explanation for this behavior. Electric field control of the Verwey transition leads directly to a large magnetoelectric effect with coefficient of 585 pT…
The single crystal study of CaBaCo4O7, a non collinear ferrimagnet (TC=64K), with a polar orthorhombic space group (Pbn21) between 4 K and 293 K, shows the appearance below TC of a large electric polarization along its c axis, reaching 17mC.m-2 at 10K. At 62.5K, a magnetic field driven giant variation of polarization, P(9T)-P(0T)=8mC.m-2, is observed. Moreover, the present magnetoelectric measurements, are fully consistent with the m'm2' magnetic point group, strongly supporting that this oxide is also ferrotoroidic. This ferrimagnetic oxide, which belongs to the '114' structural family, opens…
In honor of Igor Dzyaloshinskii on his 90th birthday, we revisit his pioneering work on the linear magnetoelectric effect in light of the modern theory of ferroelectric polarization. We show that the surface magnetic dipole moment associated with magnetoelectric materials is analogous to the bound surface charge in ferroelectrics, in that it can be conveniently described in terms of a bulk magnetoelectric multipolization that is analogous to the ferroelectric polarization. We define the intrinsic surface magnetization to be this surface magnetic dipole moment per unit area, and provide a conve…
Magnetoelectric effects in honeycomb antiferromagnet Co4Nb2O9 are investigated on the basis of symmetry analyses of Co ions in trigonal P-3c1 space group. For each Co ion, the possible spin dependence is classified by C3 point-group symmetry. This accounts for the observed main effect that an electric polarization rotates in the opposite direction at the twice speed relative to the rotation of the external magnetic field applied in the ab-plane. Inversion centers and twofold axes in the unit cell restrict the active spin-dependence of the electric polarization, which well explains the observed…
The magnetic properties, the magnetostriction, and the magnetoelectric effect in the d-electron free rare-earth aluminum borate TmAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are investigated between room temperature and 2 K. The magnetic susceptibility reveals a strong anisotropy with the hexagonal c-axis as the hard magnetic axis. Magnetostriction measurements show a large effect of an in-plane field reducing both, the a- and c-axis lattice parameters. The magnetoelectric polarization change in a- and c-directions reaches up to 300 $μ$C/m$^2$ at 70 kOe with the field applied along the a-axis. The magnetoelectric pola…
We use a group theoretical approach to enumerate the possible couplings between magnetism and ferroelectric polarisation in the parent $Pm\bar{3}m$ perovskite structure. We show that third order magnetoelectric coupling terms must always involve magnetic ordering at the A and B-site which either transforms both as R-point or both as X-point time odd irreducible representations (irreps). For fourth order couplings we demonstrate that this criterion may be relaxed allowing couplings involving irreps at X, M and R-points which collectively conserve crystal momentum, producing a magnetoelectric ef…
We present a theory for surface polaritons on ferroelectric-antiferromagnetic materials with canted spin structure. Canting is assumed to be due to a Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction with the electric polarisation and weak ferromagnetism directed in the plane parallel to the surface. Surface and bulk modes for a semi-infinite film are calculated for the case of transverse magnetic polarisation. Example results are presented using parameters appropriate for BaMnF4. We find that the magnetoelectric interaction gives rise to "leaky" surface modes, i.e. pseudosurface waves that exist in the pass b…
By means of symmetry analysis, density functional theory calculations, and Monte Carlo simulations we show that goethite, $α$-FeOOH, is a linear magnetoelectric below its Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}=400$ K. The experimentally observed magnetic field induced spin-flop phase transition results in either change of direction of electric polarization or its suppression. Calculated value of magnetoelectric coefficient is 0.24 $μ$C m$^{-2}$ T$^{-1}$. The abundance of goethite in nature makes it arguably the most widespread magnetoelectric material.
We present a study of the dielectric, structural, and magnetic properties of the multiferroic or linear magnetoelectric substitution series [(NH$_4$)$_{1-x}$K$_x$]$_2$[FeCl$_5$(H$_2$O)]. Pyroelectric currents, magnetic susceptibilities, and thermodynamic properties were examined on large single crystals of the erythrosiderite compounds and detailed magnetic-field versus temperature phase diagrams are derived for three different substitution levels. With increasing potassium concentration the material is tuned from a multiferroic ($x \le 0.06$) to a linear magnetoelectric ($x \ge 0.15$) ground …
In the present study, we investigated magnetodielectric, magnetoelectric (ME), and angular-dependent polarization in single-crystal Fe4Nb2O9. The magnetodielectric effects in epsilon(x) (x//[100]), epsilon(y) (y//[120]), and epsilon(z) (z//[001]) are found to be significant only around T-N approximate to 95 K when magnetic fields are applied along three orthogonal x-, y- (y//[120]), and z directions. The finite polarization P-x, P-y, and P-z of 70, 100, and 30 mu C/m(2), respectively, can be induced in the antiferromagnetic phase when a finite magnetic field up to 9 T is applied along the thre…
Magnetoelectrics often possess ions located in noncentrosymmetric surroundings. Based on this fact we suggest a microscopic model of magnetoelectric interaction and show that the spin-orbit coupling leads to spin-dependent electric dipole moments of the electron orbitals of these ions, which results in non-vanishing polarization for certain spin configurations. The approach accounts for the macroscopic symmetry of the unit cell and is valid both for commensurate and complex incommensurate magnetic structures. The model is illustrated by the examples of MnWO4, MnPS3 and LiNiPO4. Application to …
Electrical control of magnetization or magnetic control of polarization offers an extra degree of freedom in materials possessing both electric and magnetic dipole moments viz., magnetoelectric multiferroics. Microstructure with polycrystalline configurations that enhances the overall polarization/magnetization and that outperform single crystalline configurations are identified. The characterization of local fields corresponding to the polycrystal configuration underlines nontrivial role played by randomness in better cross-coupling mediated by anisotropic and asymmetric strains.
We observe a bilinear magnetic field-induced electric polarization of 50 $μC/m^2$ in single crystals of NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN). DTN forms a tetragonal structure that breaks inversion symmetry, with the highly polar thiourea molecules all tilted in the same direction along the c-axis. Application of a magnetic field between 2 and 12 T induces canted antiferromagnetism of the Ni spins and the resulting magnetization closely tracks the electric polarization. We speculate that the Ni magnetic forces acting on the soft organic lattice can create significant distortions and modify the angles…
The optical spectra in the family of multiferroic manganites RMnO3 is a great puzzle. Current models can not explain the fact that two strong electromagnons are present in the non-collinear spin cycloidal phase, with only one electromagnon surviving the transition into the collinear spin sinusoidal phase. We show that this is a signature of the presence of anomalous magnetoelectric coupling that breaks rotational invariance in spin space and generates oscillatory polarization in the ground state.
Regimes of optical transparency and instabilities of collinear dielectric ferromagnetic materials in the presence of the dynamic magnetoelectric effect
We study the magnetocapacitance (MC) effect and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in spin-flop driven antiferromagnet Co4Ta2O9. The magnetocapacitance data at high magnetic fields are analyzed by phenomenological Ginzburg-landau theory of ferroelectromagnets and it is found that change in dielectric constant is proportional to the square of magnetization. The saturation polarization and magnetoelectric coupling are estimated to be 52microC/m2 and $γ$ = 1.4 x10-3 (emu/g)-2 respectively at 6 Tesla. Electric polarization is achieved below Neel temperature only when the sample is cooled in the presenc…
Magnetoelectric (ME) effect is recognized for its utility for low-power electronic devices.Largest ME coefficients are often associated with phase transitions in which ferroelectricity is induced by magnetic order. Unfortunately, in these systems, large ME response is revealed only upon elaborate poling procedures. These procedures may become unnecessary in single-polar-domain crystals of polar magnets. Here we report giant ME effects in a polar magnet Fe2Mo3O8 at temperatures as high as 60 K.Polarization jumps of 0.3 μC/cm2, and repeated mutual control of ferroelectric and magnetic moments wi…
We present the rare existence of d5 off-centering, weak ferroelectric polarization and demonstrate its correlation with observed magnetoelectric (ME) properties in the G type (TN~210 K) antiferromagnet Fe2TeO6 (FTO) compound. The origin of ferroelectricity (FE) is associated with both lattice and asymmetric electron density distribution around the ion cores. ME coupling is observed in magnetic field-dependent polarization, ME voltage, and magnetostrain measurements. Short-range magnetic ordering due to intrabilayer dimeric exchange coupling via the double oxygen bridged Fe-O1-Fe pathway is pro…
Inhomogeneous magnetoelectric effect in magnetization distribution heterogeneities (0-degree domain walls) appeared on crystal lattice defect of the multiferroic material has been investigated. Magnetic symmetry based predictions of kind of electrical polarization distribution in their volumes were used. It was found that magnetization distribution heterogeneity with any symmetry produces electrical polarization. Results were systemized in scope of micromagnetic structure chirality. It was shown that all 0-degree domain walls with time-noninvariant chirality have identical type of spatial dist…
Controlling magnetism using voltage is highly desired for applications, but remains challenging due to fundamental contradiction between polarity and magnetism. Here we propose a mechanism to manipulate magnetic domain walls in ferrimagnetic or ferromagnetic multiferroics using electric field. Different from those studies based on static domain-level couplings, here the magnetoelectric coupling relies on the collaborative spin dynamics around domain walls. Accompanying the reversal of spin chirality driven by polarization switching, a "rolling-downhill"-like motion of domain wall is achieved a…
We show that 1:1 ordering of A$'$ and A$''$ cations in A$'_{1/2}$A$''_{1/2}$B$_2$X$_4$ magnetic spinels results in appearance of magnetoelectric properties. Possible value of magnetically induced electric polarization is calculated using the recently proposed microscopic model, which takes into account spin-dependent electric dipole moments of magnetic ions located in noncentrosymmetric crystallographic positions. We build phenomenological models of magnetic phase transitions in cation-ordered spinels, which describe ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ordering patterns of B cation spins, and …
The polar magnet CaBaCo$_{4}$O$_{7}$ is known to exhibit the largest magnetic-field-driven electric polarization change ($ΔP$) associated with an antiferromagnetic (AFM)-ferrimagnetic (FIM) transition in a narrow temperature range between 62 and 69 K. In this work, we investigate the effect of Ni doping on its multiferroic properties, by means of magnetization, electric polarization, dielectric constant, and magnetostriction measurements on single crystals of CaBaCo$_{3.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$O$_{7}$ up to 50 T. In the doped material, two kinds of AFM phases appear below 78 K, accompanying negative $ΔP$…
Below its Néel temperature, the frustrated magnet CdCr$_2$O$_4$ exhibits an antiferromagnetic spin-spiral ground state. Such states can give rise to a sizable magnetoelectric coupling. In this report, we measure the electric polarization induced in single-crystalline CdCr$_2$O$_4$ by a large applied magnetic field. Because the detection of a macroscopic polarization is hindered by the structural domains in the tetragonal spin-spiral phase, we have pioneered an alternative method of measuring polarization induced by high magnetic fields, using electrostatic force microscopy. This method enables…
We report the results of various measurements, namely magnetization, complex dielectric permittivity and electric polarization (P) on Dy2BaNiO5 as a function of temperature (T) and magnetic-field (H), apart from heat-capacity (C), with the primary motivation of exploring the existence of magnetoelectric (ME) coupling among Haldane spin-chain systems. The M(T) and C(T) data establish long range magnetic ordering at 58K. The most noteworthy observations are: (i) Distinct anomalies are observed in dielectric constant (ε') vs T and loss (tanδ) vs T at different temperatures, i.e. 12.5, 30, 50 and …
Magnetoelectric coupling in the polycrystalline antiferromagnets CuFe0.95Rh0.05O2 and CuFeO2 has been investigated. For both samples, electric polarization was observed in the absence of an applied external magnetic field demonstrating that for multiferroic research ceramics are worth to be studied. The observed magnetodielectric effect for CuFe0.95Rh0.05O2 in the electrically polar phase supports the existence of a noncollinear antiferromagnetic state. Interestingly, the electric polarization of this sample can be suppressed by a magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the relative magn…
MnTiO3 has been studied for many decades, but it was only in the last few years that its strong magnetoelectric behavior had been observed. Here, we use neutron scattering on two separately grown single crystals and two powder samples to show the presence of a supercell that breaks R-3 symmetry. We also present the temperature and field dependence of the dielectric constant and pyroelectric current, and show evidence of non-zero off-diagonal magnetoelectric tensor elements (forbidden by R-3 symmetry) followed by a polarization flop accompanying the spin flop transition at μ0HSF = 6.5 T. Mössba…
A theoretical description of the sequence of magnetic phases in Co3TeO6 is presented. The strongly first-order character of the transition to the commensurate multiferroic ground state, induced by coupled order parameters corresponding to different wavevectors, is related to a large magnetoelastic effect with an exchange energy critically sensitive to the interatomic spacing. The monoclinic magnetic symmetry C2' of the multiferroic phase permits spontaneous polarization and magnetization as well as the linear magnetoelectric effect. The existence of weakly ferromagnetic domains is verified exp…
Magnetic skyrmions, vortex-like swirling spin textures characterized by a quantized topological invariant, realized in chiral-lattice magnets are currently attracting intense research interest. In particular, their dynamics under external fields is an issue of vital importance both for fundamental science and for technical application. Whereas observations of magnetic skyrmions had been limited to metallic magnets so far, their realization was discovered also in a chiral-lattice insulating magnet Cu2OSeO3 in 2012. Skyrmions in the insulator turned out to exhibit multiferroic nature with spin-i…
Electric susceptibility of antiferromagnetic multiferroics with cycloidal spin order at magnetoelectric effect associated with collinear component of spins
Motivated by recent terahertz (THz) spectroscopy measurements in $α$-RuCl$_3$, we develop a theory for magnetoelectric (ME) effects in Mott insulators of $d^5$ transition metal ions in an octahedral crystal field. For $4d$ and $5d$ compounds, the relatively wide-spread orbitals favor charge fluctuations of localized electrons to neighboring ions and a significant ME effect from electronic mechanisms is expected. From a three-orbital Hubbard model with strong spin-orbit coupling, we derive the mechanisms for the electric polarization originating from virtual hopping of the localized holes carry…
Magnetoelectric effect is a fundamental physics phenomenon that synergizes electric and magnetic degrees of freedom to generate distinct material responses like electrically tuned magnetism, which serves as a key foundation of the emerging field of spintronics. Here, we show by first-principles studies that ferroelectric (FE) polarization of an In2Se3 monolayer can modulate the magnetism of an adjacent transition-metal (TM) decorated graphene layer via an FE induced electronic transition. The TM nonbonding d-orbital shifts downward and hybridizes with carbon p states near the Fermi level, supp…
