Mode conversion and resonant absorption are crucial mechanisms for wave transport and absorption. Scaling behavior of mode conversion or resonant absorption is well-known for electromagnetic and MHD waves in planar geometry. Our recent study showed that such a scaling behavior of resonant absorption could also exist for coronal loop oscillations with cylindrical geometry, but it was only tested for one density profile. Here we generalise our previous study on the scaling behavior of resonant absorption by considering multiple density profiles. Applying an invariant imbedding method to the ideal MHD wave equations, we show that the scaling behavior also exists for these density models. We thus generalise our earlier results and show that such a universal scaling exists in cylindrical geometry, too. Given these results and the earlier results in planar geometry, we formulate a hypothesis that a universal scaling behavior exists regardless of the type of mode conversion or resonant absorption.
Resonant absorption and mode conversion are both extensively studied mechanisms for wave "absorption" in solar magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). But are they really distinct? We re-examine a well-known simple resonant absorption model in a cold MHD plasma that places the resonance inside an evanescent region. The normal mode solutions display the standard singular resonant features. However, these same normal modes may be used to construct a ray bundle which very clearly undergoes mode conversion to an Alfvén wave with no singularities. We therefore conclude that resonant absorption and mode convers…
Resonant absorption is considered as a crucial mechanism for the damping of the coronal loop oscillations and plasma heating. We study resonant absorption of the coronal loop kink oscillations excited by such external drivers as flares on the assumption that there is an intermediate shear flow region surrounding the loop. We find that for long coronal loops resonant absorption can be highly enhanced or reduced depending sensitively on the magnitude and direction of the flow and the spatial extent of the flow region when the transitional layer is thin. For short coronal loops, high flow speed a…
Gravity Induced Resonant Emission (gire) has been proposed as the mechanism of coronal heating; here we are comparing this with Multi photon Ionisation (mpi) in Laser. We find both are same, except electron damping as a pre-phase mechanism to initiate mpi in gire. A high intensity laser field used for mpi, but in gire, this happens at resonance condition when the Larmour radii of the particles are same. The temporal compression of photons is achieved by grating devise, but in gire, this is done by field deficit created due to the loss of electrons at resonance condition and this loss is compen…
The arched field lines forming coronal arcades are often observed to undulate as magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves propagate both across and along the magnetic field. These waves are most likely a combination of resonantly coupled fast magnetoacoustic waves and Alfvén waves. The coupling results in resonant absorption of the fast waves, converting fast wave energy into Alfvén waves. The fast eigenmodes of the arcade have proven difficult to compute or derive analytically, largely because of the mathematical complexity that the coupling introduces. When a traditional spectral decomposition is emp…
In this paper, we study kink and sausage oscillations in the presence of longitudinal background flow. We study resonant absorption of the kink and sausage modes in the slow continuum under magnetic pore conditions in the presence of flow. we determine the dispersion relation then solve it numerically, and find the frequencies and damping rates of the slow kink and sausage surface modes. We also, obtain analytical solution for the damping rate of the slow surface mode in the long wavelength limit. We show that in the presence of plasma flow, resonance absorption can result in strong damping fo…
We study the effect of resonant absorption of surface sausage and surface kink modes under photospheric conditions where the slow surface sausage modes undergo resonant damping in the slow continuum and the surface kink modes in the slow and Alfvén continua at the transitional layers. We use recently derived analytical formulas to obtain the damping rate (time). By considering linear density and linear pressure profiles for the transitional layers, we show that resonant absorption in the slow continuum could be an efficient mechanism for the wave damping of the slow surface sausage and slow su…
Observations show that twisted magnetic flux tubes are present throughout the sun's atmosphere. The main aim of this work is to obtain the damping rate of sausage modes in the presence of magnetic twist. Using the connection formulae obtained by Sakurai et al. (1991), we investigate resonant absorption of the sausage modes in the slow continuum under photosphere conditions. We derive the dispersion relation and solve it numerically and consequently obtain the frequencies and damping rates of the slow surface sausage modes. We conclude that the magnetic twist can result in strong damping in com…
The standing quasi-modes of the ideal MHD in a zero-$β$ cylindrical magnetic flux tube that undergoes a longitudinal density stratification and radial density structuring is considered. The radial structuring is assumed to be a linearly varying density profile. Using the relevant connection formulae of the resonant absorption, the dispersion relation for the fast MHD body waves is derived and solved numerically to obtain both the frequencies and damping rates of the fundamental and first-overtone, $k=1,2$ modes of both the kink ($m=1$), and fluting ($m=2$) waves. Where $k$ and $m$ are the long…
Observations of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves in the structured solar atmosphere have shown that these waves are damped and can thus contribute to atmospheric heating. In this paper, we focus on the damping mechanism of resonant absorption in the cusp continuum. This process takes places when waves travel through an inhomogeneous plasma. Our aim is to determine the properties of MHD waves undergoing resonant absorption in the cusp continuum in the transition layer of a cylindrical solar atmospheric structure, such as a photospheric pore or a coronal loop. Depending on which quantities domina…
A fast-wave pulse in a simple, cold, inhomogeneous MHD model plasma is constructed by Fourier superposition over frequency of harmonic waves that are singular at their respective Alfven resonances. The pulse partially reflects before reaching the resonance layer, but also partially tunnels through to it to mode convert to an Alfven wave. The exact absorption/conversion coefficient for the pulse is shown to be given precisely by a function of transverse wavenumber tabulated in Paper I of this sequence, and to be independent of frequency and pulse width.
There is observational evidence of propagating kink waves driven by photospheric motions. These disturbances, interpreted as kink magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are attenuated as they propagate upwards in the solar corona. In this paper we show that resonant absorption provides a simple explanation to the spatial damping of these waves. Kink MHD waves are studied using a cylindrical model of solar magnetic flux tubes which includes a non-uniform layer at the tube boundary. Assuming that the frequency is real and the longitudinal wavenumber complex, the damping length and damping per wavelengt…
Solar coronal loops represent the variety of fast, intermediate, and slow normal mode oscillations. In this study, the transverse oscillations of the loops with a few-minutes period and also with damping caused by the resonant absorption were analyzed using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) images of the Sun. We employed the 171 $Å$ data recorded by Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO)/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) to analyze the parameters of coronal loop oscillations such as period, damping time, loop length, and loop width. For the loop observed on 11 October 2013, the period and the damping of thi…
There are observational evidences for the existence of twisted magnetic field in the solar corona. Here, we have investigated resonant damping of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves in magnetic flux tubes. A realistic model of the tube with continuous magnetic twist and radially inhomogeneous density profile has been considered. We have obtained the dispersion relation of the kink wave using the solution to the linear MHD equations outside the density inhomogeneity and the appropriate connection formula to the solutions across the thin transitional boundary layer. The dependence of the os…
Transverse magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves have been shown to be ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere and can in principle carry sufficient energy to generate and maintain the Sun's million-degree outer atmosphere or corona. However, direct evidence of the dissipation process of these waves and subsequent heating has not yet been directly observed. Here we report on high spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution observations of a solar prominence that show a compelling signature of so-called resonant absorption, a long hypothesized mechanism to efficiently convert and dissipate transverse wave …
Aims. We investigate the transfer of energy between a standing kink mode and azimuthal Alfven waves within an expanding flux tube. We consider the process of resonant absorption in a loop with a non-uniform Alfven frequency profile but in the absence of a radial density gradient. Methods. Using the MHD code, Lare3d, we model an oscillating magnetic flux tube that expands radially with height. An initially straight loop structure with a magnetic field enhancement is relaxed towards a force-free state before a standing kink mode is introduced. Results. We demonstrate that the transverse gradient…
This paper investigates the changes in spatial properties when magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves undergo resonant damping in the Alfvén continuum. The analysis is carried out for a 1D cylindrical pressure-less plasma with a straight magnetic field. The effect of the damping on the spatial wave variables is determined by using complex frequencies that arise as a result of the resonant damping. Compression and vorticity are used to characterise the spatial evolution of the MHD wave. The most striking result is the huge spatial variation in the vorticity component parallel to the magnetic field. Pa…
It has been shown recently that magnetic twist and axisymmetric MHD modes are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere and therefore, the study of resonant absorption for these modes have become a pressing issue as it can have important consequences for heating magnetic flux tubes in the solar atmosphere and the observed damping. In this investigation, for the first time, we calculate the damping rate for axisymmetric MHD waves in weakly twisted magnetic flux tubes. Our aim is to investigate the impact of resonant damping of these modes for solar atmospheric conditions. This analytical study is base…
Transverse oscillations of solar filament and prominence threads have been frequently reported. These oscillations have the common features of being of short period (2-10 min) and being damped after a few periods. Kink magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave modes have been proposed as responsible for the observed oscillations, whereas resonant absorption in the Alfven continuum and ion-neutral collisions are the best candidates to be the damping mechanisms. Here, we study both analytically and numerically the time damping of kink MHD waves in a cylindrical, partially ionized filament thread embedded i…
There is ample evidence of twisted magnetic structures in the solar corona. This motivates us to consider the magnetic twist as the cause of Alfven frequency continuum in the coronal loops, which can support the resonant absorption as a rapid damping mechanism for the observed coronal kink magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillations. We model a coronal loop with a straight cylindrical magnetic flux tube which has constant but different densities in the interior and exterior regions. The magnetic field is assumed to be constant and aligned with the cylinder axis everywhere except a thin layer near t…
We investigate the temporal evolution of impulsively generated perturbations in a potential coronal arcade with an embedded loop. As the initial configuration we consider a coronal loop, represented by a density enhancement, which is unbounded in the ignorable direction of the arcade. The linearized time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic equations have been numerically solved in field-aligned coordinates and the time evolution of the initial perturbations has been studied in the zero-beta approximation. For propagation constrained to the plane of the arcade, the considered initial perturbations do…
This paper uses linear magnetohydrodynamics to model resonant absorption in coronal plasma with a Cartesian coordinate system. We impose line-tied boundary conditions and tilt the background magnetic field to be oblique to the transition region. Halberstadt & Goedbloed (1993, 1995); Goedbloed& Halberstadt (1994); Arregui et al. (2003) show that line-tied boundary conditions cause their resonant absorption models to produce steep boundary layers/evanescent fast waves. We aim to study the importance of the boundary layers and assess their significance in a solar context. We calculate the solutio…
Transverse magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere and may be responsible for generating the Sun's million-degree outer atmosphere. However, direct evidence of the dissipation process and heating from these waves remains elusive. Through advanced numerical simulations combined with appropriate forward modeling of a prominence flux tube, we provide the observational signatures of transverse MHD waves in prominence plasmas. We show that these signatures are characterized by thread-like substructure, strong transverse dynamical coherence, an out-of-phase difference …
The nonlinear theory of driven magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) waves in strongly anisotropic and dispersive plasmas, developed for slow resonance by Clack and Ballai [Phys. Plasmas, 15, 2310 (2008)] and Alfvén resonance by Clack \emph{et al.} [A&A,494, 317 (2009)], is used to study the weakly nonlinear interaction of fast magnetoacoustic (FMA) waves in a one-dimensional planar plasma. The magnetic configuration consists of an inhomogeneous magnetic slab sandwiched between two regions of semi-infinite homogeneous magnetic plasmas. Laterally driven FMA waves penetrate the inhomogeneous slab interacti…
The search for resonant absorption of Compton and bremsstrahlung solar axions by $^{169}$Tm nuclei have been performed. Such an absorption should lead to the excitation of low-lying nuclear energy level: $A+^{169}$Tm $\rightarrow ^{169}$Tm$^*$ $\rightarrow ^{169}$Tm $+ γ$ (8.41 keV). Additionally the axio-electric effect in silicon atoms is sought. The axions are detected using a Si(Li) detectors placed in a low-background setup. As a result, a new model independent restrictions on the axion-electron and the axion-nucleon coupling: $g_{Ae}\times|g^0_{AN}+ g^3_{AN}|\leq 2.1\times10^{-14}$ and t…
Observations show the ubiquitous presence of propagating magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves in the solar atmosphere. Waves and flows are often observed simultaneously. Due to plasma inhomogeneity in the perpendicular direction to the magnetic field, kink waves are spatially damped by resonant absorption. The presence of flow may affect the wave spatial damping. Here, we investigate the effect of longitudinal background flow on the propagation and spatial damping of resonant kink waves in transversely nonuniform magnetic flux tubes. We combine approximate analytical theory with numerical inve…
Resonant absorption of fast magnetoacoustic (FMA) waves in an inhomogeneous, weakly dissipative, one-dimensional planar, strongly anisotropic and dispersive plasma is investigated. The magnetic configuration consists of an inhomogeneous magnetic slab sandwiched between two regions of semi-infinite homogeneous magnetic plasmas. Laterally driven FMA waves penetrate the inhomogeneous slab interacting with the localised slow or Alfven waves present in the inhomogeneous layer and are partly reflected, dissipated and transmitted by this region. The presented research aims to find the coefficient of …
A search for resonant absorption of solar axions by $^{169}$Tm nuclei was carried out. A newly developed approach involving low-background cryogenic bolometer based on Tm$_3$Al$_5$O$_{12}$ crystal was used that allowed for significant improvement of sensitivity in comparison with previous $^{169}$Tm based experiments. The measurements performed with $8.18$ g crystal during $6.6$ days exposure yielded the following limits on axion couplings: $|g_{Aγ} (g_{AN}^0 + g_{AN}^3) \leq 1.44 \times 10^{-14}$ GeV$^{-1}$ and $|g_{Ae} (g_{AN}^0 + g_{AN}^3) \leq 2.81 \times 10^{-16}$.
This paper separately evaluates the effects of inclination and asymmetry of solar coronal loops on the resonant absorption of kink magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillations. We modelled a typical coronal loop by a straight and axisymmetric cylindrical magnetic flux tube filled with cold plasma. We solved the dispersion relation numerically for different values of the longitudinal mass density stratification. We show that, in inclined and asymmetric loops, the frequencies and their corresponding damping rates of the fundamental and first-overtone modes of kink oscillations are smaller in compariso…
