Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped phases of matter that cannot be deformed to a trivial phase without breaking the symmetry or closing the bulk gap. Here, we introduce a new notion of a topological obstruction that is not captured by bulk energy gap closings in periodic boundary conditions. More specifically, we say two bulk Hamiltonians belong to distinct boundary obstructed topological `phases' (BOTPs) if they can be deformed to each other on a system with periodic boundaries, but cannot be deformed to each other for symmetric open boundaries without closing the gap at at least one high symmetry region on the surface. BOTPs are not topological phases of matter in the standard sense since they are adiabatically deformable to each other on a torus but, similar to SPTs, they are associated with boundary signatures in open systems such as surface states or fractional corner or hinge charges. We show that the double-mirror quadrupole model of [Science, 357(6346), 2018] is a prototypical example of such phases, and present a detailed analysis of several aspects of boundary obstructions in this model. In addition, we introduce several three-dimensional models having boundary obstructions, which are characterized either by surface states or fractional corner or hinge charges. We also provide a general framework to study boundary obstructions in free-fermion systems in terms of Wannier band representations (WBR), an extension of the recently-developed band representation formalism to Wannier bands. WBRs capture the notion of topological obstructions in the Wannier bands which can then be used to study topological obstructions in the boundary spectrum by means of the correspondence between the Wannier and boundary spectra. This establishes a form of bulk-boundary correspondence for BOTPs by relating the bulk band representation to the boundary topology.
Phase-change materials are ubiquitous in technology because of their ability to transition between amorphous and crystalline phases fast and reversibly, upon shining light or passing a current. Here we argue that to fully understand their electronic properties it is necessary to define a novel electronic phase: the amorphous obstructed insulator. It differs from an obstructed insulator crystal in that it presents localized edge or surface states irrespective of the sample termination. Consequently, we show that obstructed amorphous insulators in three-dimensions host a surface two-dimensional …
We propose boundary obstructed topological phases caused by Wannier orbital shift between ordinary atomic sites, which, however, cannot be indicated by symmetry eigenvalues at high symmetry momenta (symmetry indicators) in bulk. On the open boundary, Wannier charge centers can shift to different atoms from those in bulk, leading to in-gap surface states, higher-order hinge states or corner states. To demonstrate such orbital-shift-induced boundary obstructed topological insulators, we predict eight material candidates, all of which were overlooked in present topological databases. Metallic sur…
We analyze the topological properties of a chiral ${p}+i{p}$ superconductor for a two-dimensional metal/semimetal with four Dirac points. Such a system has been proposed to realize second-order topological superconductivity and host corner Majorana modes. We show that with an additional $\mathsf{C}_4$ rotational symmetry, the system is in an intrinsic higher-order topological superconductor phase, and with a lower and more natural $\mathsf{C}_2$ symmetry, is in a boundary-obstructed topological superconductor phase. The boundary topological obstruction is protected by a bulk Wannier gap. Howev…
Non-trivial topology and unconventional pairing are two central guiding principles in the contemporary search for and analysis of superconducting materials and heterostructure compounds. Previously, a topological superconductor has been predominantly conceived to result from a topologically non-trivial band subject to intrinsic or external superconducting proximity effect. Here, we propose a new class of topological superconductors which are uniquely induced by unconventional pairing. They exhibit a boundary-obstructed higher-order topological character and, depending on their dimensionality, …
The bulk-edge correspondence characterizes topological insulators and superconductors. We generalize this concept to the bulk-corner correspondence and the edge-corner correspondence in two dimensions. In the bulk-corner (edge-corner) correspondence, the topological number is defined for the bulk (edge), while the topological phase is evidenced by the emergence of zero-energy corner states. It is shown that the boundary-obstructed topological phases recently proposed are the edge-corner-correspondence type, while the higher-order topological phases are classified into the bulk-corner-correspon…
We consider the extent to which symmetry eigenvalues reveal the topological character of bands. Specifically, we compare distinct atomic limit phases (band representations) that share the same irreducible representations (irreps) at all points in the Brillouin zone and, therefore, appear equivalent in a classification based on eigenvalues. We derive examples where such "irrep-equivalent" phases can be distinguished by a quantized Berry phase or generalization thereof. These examples constitute a generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain: neither phase is topological, in the sense that l…
In this work, we study the topological phases of the dimerized square lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field. The dimerization pattern in the lattice's hopping amplitudes can induce a series of bulk energy gap openings in the Hofstadter spectrum at certain fractional fillings, giving rise to various topological phases. In particular, we show that at $\frac{1}{2}$-filling the topological quadrupole insulator phase with a quadrupole moment quantized to $\frac{e}{2}$ and associated corner-localized mid-gap states exists in certain parameter regime for all magnetic fluxes. At $\frac…
It is known that in some higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs), topological phases are distinguished not by gap closings of bulk states but by those of edge states, which are called boundary-obstructed topological phases (BOTPs). In this paper, we construct an effective theory of the BOTP transition of two-dimensional (2D) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model in a uniform magnetic field. At $π$ flux per plaquette, this model corresponds to the typical model of HOTIs proposed by Benalcazar, Bernevig, and Hughes (BBH). The BBH model can be approximated by Dirac fermions with two kinds of mass …
Topologically trivial insulators come in two kinds: atomic, where the Wannier charge centers (WCCs) are localized on the atoms, and obstructed atomic, where the WCCs are located away from the atoms. The latter, which can exhibit interesting surface states and possibly have much larger band gaps than the topological insulators, have so far not been classified in three-dimensional (3D) crystalline materials. In this paper, we developed the 3D real space invariants (RSIs) for the 1651 Shubnikov space groups with the spin-orbit coupling and provide the full classification of 3D obstructed atomic i…
We introduce novel higher-order topological phases of matter in chiral-symmetric systems (class AIII of the tenfold classification), most of which would be misidentified as trivial by current theories. These phases are protected by "multipole chiral numbers", bulk integer topological invariants that in 2D and 3D are built from sublattice multipole moment operators, as defined herein. The integer value of a multipole chiral number indicates how many degenerate zero-energy states localize at each corner of a system. These higher-order phases of matter are generally boundary-obstructed and robust…
Boundary theories of static bulk topological phases of matter are obstructed in the sense that they cannot be realized on their own as isolated systems. The obstruction can be quantified/characterized by quantum anomalies, in particular when there is a global symmetry. Similarly, topological Floquet evolutions can realize obstructed unitary operators at their boundaries. In this paper, we discuss the characterization of such obstructions by using quantum anomalies. As a particular example, we discuss time-reversal symmetric boundary unitary operators in one and two spatial dimensions, where th…
The recently introduced classification of two-dimensional insulators in terms of topological crystalline invariants has been applied so far to "obstructed" atomic insulators characterized by a mismatch between the centers of the electronic Wannier functions and the ionic positions. We extend this notion to quantum spin Hall insulators in which the ground state cannot be described in terms of time-reversal symmetric localized Wannier functions. A system equivalent to graphene in all its relevant electronic and topological properties except for a real-space obstruction is identified and studied …
We study the orbital magnetic quadrupole moment (MQM) in three dimensional higher-order topological phases. Much like electric quadrupole moment, which is associated with a charge response on the boundaries of a finite sample, the diagonal components of the MQM manifest as surface-localized magnetization and hinge currents. The hinge current is generally not equal to the difference of surface magnetizations that intersect at the hinge, and we show this mismatch is precisely quantified by the bulk MQM. We derive a quantum mechanical formula for the layer-resolved magnetization in slab geometrie…
Flat-band superconductivity has theoretically demonstrated the importance of band topology to correlated phases. In two dimensions, the superfluid weight, which determines the critical temperature through the Berezinksii-Kosterlitz-Thouless criteria, is bounded by the Fubini-Study metric at zero temperature. We show this bound is nonzero within flat bands whose Wannier centers are obstructed from the atoms - even when they have identically zero Berry curvature. Next, we derive general lower bounds for the superfluid weight in terms of momentum space irreps in all 2D space groups, extending the…
Conventional topological insulators and superconductors have topologically protected nodal points on their boundaries, and the recent interests in nodal-line semimetals only concerned bulk band structures. Here, we present a novel four-dimensional topological insulator protected by an anti-unitary reflection symmetry, whose boundary band has a single $PT$-symmetric nodal line with double topological charges. Inspired by the recent experimental realization of the four-dimensional quantum Hall effect, we also propose a cold-atom system which realizes the novel topological insulator with tunable …
Interaction induced topological states remain one of the fascinating phases in condensed matter physics. The exciton condensate has recently sparked renewed interest due to the discovery of new candidate materials and its driving force to realize exotic topological states. In this work, we explore the exciton orders induced high-order topology in the bilayer quantum spin Hall insulators and find that the topological excitonic corner states can be realized by tuning the gate and magnetic field. When an in-plane Zeeman field is applied to the system, two or four excitonic boundary-obstructed cor…
In this work, we examine the topological phases that can arise in triangular lattices with disconnected elementary band representations. We show that, although these phases may be "fragile" with respect to the addition of extra bands, their topological properties are manifest in certain nontrivial holonomies (Wilson loops) in the space of nontrivial bands. We introduce an eigenvalue index for fragile topology, and we show how a nontrivial value of this index manifests as the winding of a hexagonal Wilson loop; this remains true even in the absence of time-reversal or sixfold rotational symmetr…
In this paper, we propose a new type of bulk-boundary correspondence as a generic approach to theoretically and experimentally detect fragile topological states. When the fragile phase can be written as a difference of a trivial atomic insulator and the so-called obstructed atomic insulator, the gap between the fragile phase and other bands must close under a specific novel twist of the boundary condition of the system. We explicitly work out all the twisted boundary conditions (TBC) that can detect all the 2D fragile phases implied by symmetry eigenvalues in all wallpaper groups. We develop t…
We study the bulk-boundary correspondence for topological crystalline phases, where the crystalline symmetry is an order-two (anti)symmetry, unitary or antiunitary. We obtain a formulation of the bulk-boundary correspondence in terms of a subgroup sequence of the bulk classifying groups, which uniquely determines the topological classification of the boundary states. This formulation naturally includes higher-order topological phases as well as topologically nontrivial bulk systems without topologically protected boundary states. The complete bulk and boundary classification of higher-order to…
The boundary of topological phases of matter can manifest its topology nature, which leads to the so-called boundary-bulk correspondence (BBC) of topological phases. In this Letter, we construct a one-to-one correspondence between the boundary theories of fermionic SPT (fSPT) phases protected by crystalline symmetry and on-site symmetry in 2D fermionic systems, which follow the so-called crystalline equivalence principle. We dub such correspondence crystalline equivalent BBC. We illustrate this correspondence by two simple examples and as an application, we discover the topological boundary th…
In two-dimensional anomalous Floquet insulators, non-Hermitian boundary state engineering can be used to completely separate chiral boundary states from bulk bands in the quasienergy spectrum. The topological properties of such spectrally separated boundary states are no longer restricted by the strict bulk-boundary correspondence of Hermitian systems. We show that this additional topological freedom enables one to faithfully transfer the topological properties of a boundary attached to a Floquet insulator to a non-Hermitian Floquet chain obtained by physically cutting off the boundary from th…
We discuss the relation between bulk topological invariants and the spectrum of surface states in three dimensional non-interacting topological insulators. By studying particular models, and considering general boundary conditions for the electron wavefunction on the crystal surface, we demonstrate that using experimental techniques that probe surface states, only strong topological and trivial insulating phases can be distinguished; the latter state being equivalent to a weak topological insulator. In a strong topological insulator, only the {\it parity} of the number of surface states, but n…
We study the conditions for Bloch bands to be spanned by symmetric and strictly compact Wannier states that have zero overlap with all lattice sites beyond a certain range. Similar to the characterization of topological insulators in terms of an algebraic (rather than exponential) localization of Wannier states, we find that there may be impediments to the compact localization even of topologically "trivial" obstructed atomic insulators. These insulators admit exponentially-localized Wannier states centered at unoccupied orbitals of the crystalline lattice. First, we establish a sufficient con…
The breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence in non-Hermitian (NH) topological systems is an open, controversial issue. In this paper, to resolve this issue, we ask the following question: Can a (global) topological invariant completely describe the topological properties of a NH system as its Hermitian counterpart? Our answer is no. One cannot use a global topological invariant (including non-Bloch topological invariant) to accurately characterize the topological properties of the NH systems. Instead, there exist a new type of topological invariants that are absence in its Hermitian coun…
Eigenenergies of a non-Hermitian system without parity-time symmetry are complex in general. Here, we show that the chiral boundary states of higher-dimensional (two-dimensional and three-dimensional) non-Hermitian topological insulators without parity-time symmetry can be Hermitian with real eigenenergies under certain conditions. Our approach allows one to construct Hermitian chiral edge and hinge states from non-Hermitian two-dimensional Chern insulators and three-dimensional second-order topological insulators, respectively. Such Hermitian chiral boundary channels have perfect transmission…
For quantum systems described by Schrödinger operators on the half-space $\RR^{d-1}\times\RR^{leq 0}$ the boundary force per unit area and unit energy is topologically quantised provided the Fermi energy lies in a gap of the bulk spectrum. Under this condition it is also equal to the integrated density of states at the Fermi energy.
We show that the boundary charge and spin can be used as alternative signatures of the topological phase transition in topological models such as semiconducting nanowires with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the presence of a magnetic field and in proximity to an $s$-wave superconductor. We identify signatures of the topological phase transition that do not rely on the presence of Majorana zero-energy modes and, thus, can serve as independent probes of topological properties. The boundary spin component along the magnetic field, obtained by summing contributions from all states below t…
Topological insulators and superconductors are characterized by their gapless boundary modes. In this paper, we develop a recursive approach to the boundary Green function which encodes this nontrivial boundary physics. Our approach describes the various topologically trivial and nontrivial phases as fixed points of a recursion and provides direct access to the phase diagram, the localization properties of the edge modes, as well as topological indices. We illustrate our approach in the context of various familiar models such as the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, the Kitaev chain, and a model for…
Data from angle resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) often serves as a smoking-gun evidence for the existence of topological materials. It provides the energy dispersion curves of the topological boundary modes which characterize these phases. Unfortunately this method requires a sufficiently regular boundary such that these boundary modes remain sharp in momentum space. Here the seemingly random data obtained from performing ARPES on strongly disordered topological insulators and Weyl semimetals is analyzed theoretically and numerically. Expectedly the disorder averaged ARPES spectra …

Topological insulators are noninteracting, gapped fermionic systems which have gapless boundary excitations. They are characterized by topological invariants, which can be written in many different ways, including in terms of Green's functions. Here we show that the existence of the edge states directly follows from the existence of the topological invariant written in terms of the Green's functions, for all ten classes of topological insulators in all spatial dimensions. We also show that the resulting edge states are characterized by their own topological invariant, whose value is equal to t…
Bulk-boundary correspondence is the cornerstone of topological physics. In some non-Hermitian topological system this fundamental relation is broken in the sense that the topological number calculated for the Bloch energy band under the periodic boundary condition fails to reproduce the boundary properties under the open boundary. To restore the bulk-boundary correspondence in such non-Hermitian systems a framework beyond the Bloch band theory is needed. We develop a non-Hermitian Bloch band theory based on a modified periodic boundary condition that allows a proper description of the bulk of …
For conventional topological phases, the boundary gapless modes are determined by bulk topological invariants. Based on developing an analytic method to solve higher-order boundary modes, we present $PT$-invariant $2$D topological insulators and $3$D topological semimetals that go beyond this bulk-boundary correspondence framework. With unchanged bulk topological invariant, their first-order boundaries undergo transitions separating different phases with second-order-boundary zero-modes. For the $2$D topological insulator, the helical edge modes appear at the transition point for two second-or…
Topological boundary modes can occur at the spatial interface between a topological and gapped trivial phase and exhibit a wavefunction that exponentially decays in the gap. Here we argue that this intuition fails for a temporal boundary between a prequench topological phase that possess topological boundary eigenstates and a postquench gapped trivial phase that does not possess any eigenstates in its gap. In particular, we find that characteristics of states (e.g. probability density) prepared in a topologically non-trivial system can persist long after it is quenched into a gapped trivial ph…
