A point set $M$ in the Euclidean plane is called a planar integral point set if all the distances between the elements of $M$ are integers, and $M$ is not situated on a straight line. A planar integral point set is called to be in semi-general position, if it does not contain collinear triples. The existing lower bound for mininum diameter of planar integral point sets is linear. We prove a new lower bound for mininum diameter of planar integral point sets in semi-general position that is better than linear.
Cubic planar $n$-vertex graphs with faces of length at most $6$, e.g., fullerene graphs, have diameter in $Ω(\sqrt{n})$. It has been suspected, that a similar result can be shown for cubic planar graphs with faces of bounded length. This note provides a family of cubic planar $n$-vertex graphs with faces of length at most $7$ and diameter in ${O}(\log n)$, thus refuting the above suspicion.
DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvourák and Postle (2017). Recently, Huang et al. [https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amc.2019.124562] showed that planar graphs with diameter at most two are $4$-choosable. In this paper, we will prove that planar graphs with diameter at most two are DP-$4$-colorable, which is an extension of the above result.
The inverse degree of a graph is the sum of the reciprocals of the degrees of its vertices. We prove that in any connected planar graph, the diameter is at most 5/2 times the inverse degree, and that this ratio is tight. To develop a crucial surgery method, we begin by proving the simpler related upper bounds (4(V-1)-E)/3 and 4V^2/3E on the diameter (for connected planar graphs), which are also tight.
We show that the diameter D(G_n) of a random labelled connected planar graph with n vertices is equal to n^{1/4+o(1)}, in probability. More precisely there exists a constant c>0 such that the probability that D(G_n) lies in the interval (n^{1/4-ε},n^{1/4+ε}) is greater than 1-\exp(-n^{cε}) for ε small enough and n>n_0(ε). We prove similar statements for 2-connected and 3-connected planar graphs and maps.
In 1975, Plesník characterized all triangle-free planar graphs as having a diameter $2$. We characterize all triangle-free projective-planar graphs having a diameter $2$ and discuss some applications. In particular, the main result is applied to calculate the analogue of clique numbers for graphs, namely, colored mixed graphs, having different types of arcs and edges.
We give an attempt to build a classification of planar integral point sets. For two obtained classes, we provide general constructions of upper bounds for minimal diameter of integral point sets in higher dimensions of certain cardinality. Employing machine search, we give the examples of planar integral point sets to build such bounds.
The reconfiguration graph $R_k(G)$ for the $k$-colorings of a graph $G$ has as vertices all possible $k$-colorings of $G$ and two colorings are adjacent if they differ in the color of exactly one vertex. We use a list coloring technique inspired by results of Thomassen to prove that for a planar graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, $R_{10}(G)$ has diameter at most $8n$, and if $G$ is triangle-free, then $R_7(G)$ has diameter at most $7n$.
The reconfiguration graph $R_k(G)$ for the $k$-colorings of a graph $G$ has as vertex set the set of all possible proper $k$-colorings of $G$ and two colorings are adjacent if they differ in the color of exactly one vertex. A result of Bousquet and Perarnau (2016) regarding graphs of bounded degeneracy implies that if $G$ is a planar graph with $n$ vertices, then $R_{12}(G)$ has diameter at most $6n$. We improve on the number of colors, showing that $R_{10}(G)$ has diameter at most $8n$ for every planar graph $G$ with $n$ vertices.
Perfect Matching-Cut is the problem of deciding whether a graph has a perfect matching that contains an edge-cut. We show that this problem is NP-complete for planar graphs with maximum degree four, for planar graphs with girth five, for bipartite five-regular graphs, for graphs of diameter three and for bipartite graphs of diameter four. We show that there exist polynomial time algorithms for the following classes of graphs: claw-free, $P_5$-free, diameter two, bipartite with diameter three and graphs with bounded tree-width.
The Outerplanar Diameter Improvement problem asks, given a graph $G$ and an integer $D$, whether it is possible to add edges to $G$ in a way that the resulting graph is outerplanar and has diameter at most $D$. We provide a dynamic programming algorithm that solves this problem in polynomial time. Outerplanar Diameter Improvement demonstrates several structural analogues to the celebrated and challenging Planar Diameter Improvement problem, where the resulting graph should, instead, be planar. The complexity status of this latter problem is open.
A planar semimodular lattice $L$ is \emph{slim} if $\mathbf{M}_3$ is not a sublattice of $L$. In a recent paper, G. Czédli introduced a very powerful diagram type for slim, planar, semimodular lattices. This short note proves the existence of such diagrams.
A list assignment $L$ of a graph $G$ is a function that assigns to every vertex $v$ of $G$ a set $L(v)$ of colors. A proper coloring $α$ of $G$ is called an $L$-coloring of $G$ if $α(v)\in L(v)$ for every $v\in V(G)$. For a list assignment $L$ of $G$, the $L$-recoloring graph $\mathcal{G}(G,L)$ of $G$ is a graph whose vertices correspond to the $L$-colorings of $G$ and two vertices of $\mathcal{G}(G,L)$ are adjacent if their corresponding $L$-colorings differ at exactly one vertex of $G$. A $d$-face in a plane graph is a face of length $d$. Dvořák and Feghali conjectured for a planar graph $G$…
For an integer $k \geq 1$ and a graph $G$, let $\mathcal{K}_k(G)$ be the graph that has vertex set all proper $k$-colorings of $G$, and an edge between two vertices $α$ and~$β$ whenever the coloring~$β$ can be obtained from $α$ by a single Kempe change. A theorem of Meyniel from 1978 states that $\mathcal{K}_5(G)$ is connected with diameter $O(5^{|V(G)|})$ for every planar graph $G$. We significantly strengthen this result, by showing that there is a positive constant $c$ such that $\mathcal{K}_5(G)$ has diameter $O(|V(G)|^c)$ for every planar graph $G$.
The reconfiguration graph $R_k(G)$ of the $k$-colourings of a graph $G$ has as vertex set the set of all possible $k$-colourings of $G$ and two colourings are adjacent if they differ on the colour of exactly one vertex. Cereceda conjectured ten years ago that, for every $k$-degenerate graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, $R_{k+2}(G)$ has diameter $\mathcal{O}({n^2})$. The conjecture is wide open, with a best known bound of $\mathcal{O}({k^n})$, even for planar graphs. We improve this bound for planar graphs to $2^{\mathcal{O}({\sqrt{n}})}$. Our proof can be transformed into an algorithm that runs in $2^…
