Plane perfect matchings of $2n$ points in convex position are in bijection with triangulations of convex polygons of size $n+2$. Edge flips are a classic operation to perform local changes both structures have in common. In this work, we use the explicit bijection from Aichholzer et al. (2018) to determine the effect of an edge flip on the one side of the bijection to the other side, that is, we show how the two different types of edge flips are related. Moreover, we give an algebraic interpretation of the flip graph of triangulations in terms of elements of the corresponding Temperley-Lieb algebra.
A flip is a minimal move between two triangulations of a polytope. An open question is whether any two triangulations of the product of two simplices can be connected through a series of flips. This was proven in the case where one of the simplices is a triangle by Santos in 2005. In this paper we extend this to when one of the simplices is a tetrahedron.
A $d$-dimensional simplicial complex is balanced if the underlying graph is $(d+1)$-colorable. We present an implementation of cross-flips, a set of local moves introduced by Izmestiev, Klee and Novik which connect any two PL-homeomorphic balanced combinatorial manifolds. As a result we exhibit a vertex minimal balanced triangulation of the real projective plane, of the dunce hat and of the real projective space, as well as several balanced triangulations of surfaces and 3-manifolds on few vertices. In particular we construct small balanced triangulations of the 3-sphere that are non-shellable…
Simultaneous diagonal flips in plane triangulations are investigated. It is proved that every $n$-vertex triangulation with at least six vertices has a simultaneous flip into a 4-connected triangulation, and that it can be computed in O(n) time. It follows that every triangulation has a simultaneous flip into a Hamiltonian triangulation. This result is used to prove that for any two $n$-vertex triangulations, there exists a sequence of $O(\log n)$ simultaneous flips to transform one into the other. The total number of edges flipped in this sequence is O(n). The maximum size of a simultaneous f…
Eliahou \cite{2} and Kryuchkov \cite{9} conjectured a proposition that Gravier and Payan \cite{4} proved to be equivalent to the Four Color Theorem. It states that any triangulation of a polygon can be transformed into another triangulation of the same polygon by a sequence of signed diagonal flips. It is well known that any pair of polygonal triangulations are connected by a sequence of (non-signed) diagonal flips. In this paper we give a sufficient and necessary condition for a diagonal flip sequence to be a signed diagonal flip sequence.
Flips of diagonals in colored triangle-free triangulations of a convex polygon are interpreted as moves between two adjacent chambers in a certain graphic hyperplane arrangement. Properties of geodesics in the associated flip graph are deduced. In particular, it is shown that: (1) every diagonal is flipped exactly once in a geodesic between distinguished pairs of antipodes; (2) the number of geodesics between these antipodes is equal to twice the number of Young tableaux of a truncated shifted staircase shape.
We study flip graphs of triangulations whose maximum vertex degree is bounded by a constant $k$. In particular, we consider triangulations of sets of $n$ points in convex position in the plane and prove that their flip graph is connected if and only if $k > 6$; the diameter of the flip graph is $O(n^2)$. We also show that, for general point sets, flip graphs of pointed pseudo-triangulations can be disconnected for $k \leq 9$, and flip graphs of triangulations can be disconnected for any $k$. Additionally, we consider a relaxed version of the original problem. We allow the violation of the degr…
Given a finite point set P in general position in the plane, a full triangulation is a maximal straight-line embedded plane graph on P. A partial triangulation is a full triangulation of some subset P' of P containing all extreme points in P. A bistellar flip on a partial triangulation flips an edge (an edge flip), removes a non-extreme point of degree 3, or adds a point in P \ P' as vertex of degree 3. The bistellar flip graph has all partial triangulations as vertices, and a pair of partial triangulations is adjacent if they can be obtained from one another by a bistellar flip. The edge flip…
It is known that the flip distance between two triangulations of a convex polygon is related to the minimum number of tetrahedra in the triangulation of some polyhedron. It is interesting to know whether these two numbers are the same. In this work, we find examples to show that the two numbers are different in nature, and their ratio can be arbitrarily close to $\frac{3}{2}$.
The flip-graph of a convex polygon $π$ is the graph whose vertices are the triangulations of $π$ and whose edges correspond to flips between them. The eccentricity of a triangulation $T$ of $π$ is the largest possible distance in this graph from $T$ to any triangulation of $π$. It is well known that, when all $n-3$ interior edges of $T$ are incident to the same vertex, the eccentricity of $T$ in the flip-graph of $π$ is exactly $n-3$, where $n$ denotes the number of vertices of $π$. Here, this statement is generalized to arbitrary triangulations. Denoting by $n-3-k$ the largest number of inter…
We investigate a type of distance between triangulations on finite type surfaces where one moves between triangulations by performing simultaneous flips. We consider triangulations up to homeomorphism and our main results are upper bounds on distance between triangulations that only depend on the topology of the surface.
Any two triangulations of a closed surface with the same number of vertices can be transformed into each other by a sequence of regular flips, provided the number of vertices exceeds a number N depending on the surface. Examples show that in general N is bigger than the minimal number of vertices of a triangulation. The existence of N was known, but no estimate. This paper provides an estimate for N that is linear in the Euler characteristic of the surface.
Given a triangulation of a point set in the plane, a \emph{flip} deletes an edge $e$ whose removal leaves a convex quadrilateral, and replaces $e$ by the opposite diagonal of the quadrilateral. It is well known that any triangulation of a point set can be reconfigured to any other triangulation by some sequence of flips. We explore this question in the setting where each edge of a triangulation has a label, and a flip transfers the label of the removed edge to the new edge. It is not true that every labelled triangulation of a point set can be reconfigured to every other labelled triangulation…
In this paper, we show that two balanced triangulations of a closed surface are not necessary connected by a sequence of balanced stellar subdivisions and welds. This answers a question posed by Izmestiev, Klee and Novik. We also show that two balanced triangulations of a closed surface are connected by a sequence of three local operations, which we call the pentagon contraction, the balanced edge subdivision and the balanced edge weld. In addition, we prove that two balanced triangulations of the 2-sphere are connected by a sequence of pentagon contractions and their inverses if none of them …
The flip operation on colored inner-triangle-free triangulations of a convex polygon is studied. It is shown that the affine Weyl group $\widetilde{C}_n$ acts transitively on these triangulations by colored flips, and that the resulting colored flip graph is closely related to a lower interval in the weak order on $\widetilde{C}_n$. Lattice properties of this order are then applied to compute the diameter.
The flip graph of triangulations has as vertices all triangulations of a convex $n$-gon, and an edge between any two triangulations that differ in exactly one edge. An $r$-rainbow cycle in this graph is a cycle in which every inner edge of the triangulation appears exactly $r$ times. This notion of a rainbow cycle extends in a natural way to other flip graphs. In this paper we investigate the existence of $r$-rainbow cycles for three different flip graphs on classes of geometric objects: the aforementioned flip graph of triangulations of a convex $n$-gon, the flip graph of plane trees on an ar…
This work regards the order polytopes arising from the class of generalized snake posets and their posets of meet-irreducible elements. Among generalized snake posets of the same rank, we characterize those whose order polytopes have minimal and maximal volume. We give a combinatorial characterization of the circuits in these order polytopes and then conclude that every triangulation is unimodular. For a generalized snake word, we count the number of flips for the canonical triangulation of these order polytopes. We determine that the flip graph of the order polytope of the poset whose lattice…
We associate to triangulations of infinite type surface a type of flip graph where simultaneous flips are allowed. Our main focus is on understanding exactly when two triangulations can be related by a sequence of flips. A consequence of our results is that flip graphs for infinite type surfaces have uncountably many connected components.
In this paper we consider the flip operation for combinatorial pointed pseudo-triangulations where faces have size 3 or 4, so-called combinatorial 4-PPTs. We show that every combinatorial 4-PPT is stretchable to a geometric pseudo-triangulation, which in general is not the case if faces may have size larger than 4. Moreover, we prove that the flip graph of combinatorial 4-PPTs is connected and has diameter $O(n^2)$, even in the case of labeled vertices with fixed outer face. For this case we provide an $Ω(n\log n)$ lower bound.
We give a self-contained introduction to the theory of secondary polytopes and geometric bistellar flips in triangulations of polytopes and point sets, as well as a review of some of the known results and connections to algebraic geometry, topological combinatorics, and other areas. As a new result, we announce the construction of a point set in general position with a disconnected space of triangulations. This shows, for the first time, that the poset of strict polyhedral subdivisions of a point set is not always connected.
We introduce a notion of cross-flips: local moves that transform a balanced (i.e., properly $(d+1)$-colored) triangulation of a combinatorial $d$-manifold into another balanced triangulation. These moves form a natural analog of bistellar flips (also known as Pachner moves). Specifically, we establish the following theorem: any two balanced triangulations of a closed combinatorial $d$-manifold can be connected by a sequence of cross-flips. Along the way we prove that for every $m \geq d+2$ and any closed combinatorial $d$-manifold $M$, two $m$-colored triangulations of $M$ can be connected by …
We consider the polytope arising from a marked surface by flips of triangulations. Sleator, Tarjan and Thurston studied in 1988 the diameter of the associahedron, which is the polytope arising from a marked disc by flips of triangulations. They showed that every shortest path between two vertices in a face does not leave that face. We establish that same non-leaving-face property for all unpunctured marked surfaces.
We study flip-graphs of triangulations on topological surfaces where distance is measured by counting the number of necessary flip operations between two triangulations. We focus on surfaces of positive genus $g$ with a single boundary curve and $n$ marked points on this curve; we consider triangulations up to homeomorphism with the marked points as their vertices. Our main results are upper and lower bounds on the maximal distance between triangulations depending on $n$ and can be thought of as bounds on the diameter of flip-graphs up to the quotient of underlying homeomorphism groups. The ma…
The flip graph is the graph whose nodes correspond to non-isomorphic combinatorial triangulations and whose edges connect pairs of triangulations that can be obtained one from the other by flipping a single edge. In this note we show that the diameter of the flip graph is at least $\frac{7n}{3} + Θ(1)$, improving upon the previous $2n + Θ(1)$ lower bound.
Every n-edge colored n-regular graph G naturally gives rise to a simple abstract n-polytope, the colorful polytope of G, whose 1-skeleton is isomorphic to G. The paper describes colorful polytope versions of the associahedron and cyclohedron. Like their classical counterparts, the colorful associahedron and cyclohedron encode triangulations and flips, but now with the added feature that the diagonals of the triangulations are colored and adjacency of triangulations requires color preserving flips. The colorful associahedron and cyclohedron are derived as colorful polytopes from the edge colore…
We report on the implementation of an algorithm for computing the set of all regular triangulations of finitely many points in Euclidean space. This algorithm, which we call down-flip reverse search, can be restricted, e.g., to computing full triangulations only; this case is particularly relevant for tropical geometry. Most importantly, down-flip reverse search allows for massive parallelization, i.e., it scales well even for many cores. Our implementation allows to compute the triangulations of much larger point sets than before.
The space of topological decompositions into triangulations of a surface has a natural graph structure where two triangulations share an edge if they are related by a so-called flip. This space is a sort of combinatorial Teichmüller space and is quasi-isometric to the underlying mapping class group. We study this space in two main directions. We first show that strata corresponding to triangulations containing a same multiarc are strongly convex within the whole space and use this result to deduce properties about the mapping class group. We then focus on the quotient of this space by the mapp…
Let $\mathbfΣ=(Σ,M,O)$ be a surface with marked points and order-2 orbifold points which is either unpunctured or once-punctured closed, and $ω:O\rightarrow\{1,4\}$ a function. For each triangulation $τ$ of $\mathbfΣ$ we construct a cochain complex $C^\bullet(τ,ω)$. A colored triangulation is defined to be a pair consisting of a triangulation $τ$ and a 1-cocycle of $C^\bullet(τ,ω)$; the combinatorial notion of colored flip of colored triangulations is then defined as a refinement of the notion of flip of triangulations. Our main construction associates to each colored triangulation a species a…
We show that indecomposable two-term presilting complexes over $Π_{n}$, the preprojective algebra of $A_{n}$, are in bijection with internal $n$-simplices in the prism $Δ_{n} \times Δ_{1}$, the product of an $n$-simplex with a 1-simplex. We show further that this induces a bijection between triangulations of $Δ_{n} \times Δ_{1}$ and two-term silting complexes over $Π_{n}$ such that bistellar flips of triangulations correspond to mutations of two-term silting complexes. These bijections are shown to compatible with the known bijections involving the symmetric group.
We consider random lattice triangulations of $n\times k$ rectangular regions with weight $λ^{|σ|}$ where $λ>0$ is a parameter and $|σ|$ denotes the total edge length of the triangulation. When $λ\in(0,1)$ and $k$ is fixed, we prove a tight upper bound of order $n^2$ for the mixing time of the edge-flip Glauber dynamics. Combined with the previously known lower bound of order $\exp(Ω(n^2))$ for $λ>1$ [3], this establishes the existence of a dynamical phase transition for thin rectangles with critical point at $λ=1$.
We show that the triangulations of a finite point set form a flip graph that can be embedded isometrically into a hypercube, if and only if the point set has no empty convex pentagon. Point sets of this type include convex subsets of lattices, points on two lines, and several other infinite families. As a consequence, flip distance in such point sets can be computed efficiently.
The associahedron is a polytope whose graph is the graph of flips on triangulations of a convex polygon. Pseudotriangulations and multitriangulations generalize triangulations in two different ways, which have been unified by Pilaud and Pocchiola in their study of flip graphs on pseudoline arrangements with contacts supported by a given sorting network. In this paper, we construct the brick polytope of a sorting network, obtained as the convex hull of the brick vectors associated to each pseudoline arrangement supported by the network. We combinatorially characterize the vertices of this polyt…
The paper concerns lattice triangulations, that is, triangulations of the integer points in a polygon in $\mathbb{R}^2$ whose vertices are also integer points. Lattice triangulations have been studied extensively both as geometric objects in their own right and by virtue of applications in algebraic geometry. Our focus is on random triangulations in which a triangulation $σ$ has weight $λ^{|σ|}$, where $λ$ is a positive real parameter, and $|σ|$ is the total length of the edges in $σ$. Empirically, this model exhibits a "phase transition" at $λ=1$ (corresponding to the uniform distribution): f…
We show that the Chow covectors of a linkage matching field define a bijection between certain degree vectors and lattice points, and we demonstrate how one can recover the linkage matching field from this bijection. This resolves two open questions from Sturmfels and Zelevinsky (1993) on linkage matching fields. For this, we give an explicit construction that associates a bipartite incidence graph of an ordered partition of a common set to each lattice point in a dilated simplex. Given a triangulation of a product of two simplices encoded by a set of spanning trees on a bipartite node set, we…
Flip graphs are a ubiquitous class of graphs, which encode relations induced on a set of combinatorial objects by elementary, local changes. Skeletons of associahedra, for instance, are the graphs induced by quadrilateral flips in triangulations of a convex polygon. For some definition of a flip graph, a natural computational problem to consider is the flip distance: Given two objects, what is the minimum number of flips needed to transform one into the other? We consider flip graphs on orientations of simple graphs, where flips consist of reversing the direction of some edges. More precisely,…
We consider a natural local dynamic on the set of all rooted planar maps with $n$ edges that is in some sense analogous to "edge flip" Markov chains, which have been considered before on a variety of combinatorial structures (triangulations of the $n$-gon and quadrangulations of the sphere, among others). We provide the first polynomial upper bound for the mixing time of this "edge rotation" chain on planar maps: we show that the spectral gap of the edge rotation chain is bounded below by an appropriate constant times $n^{-11/2}$. In doing so, we provide a partially new proof of the fact that …
