In doped semiconductors and metals, the thermopower decreases with increasing carrier concentration, in agreement with the Pisarenko relation. Here, we demonstrate a new strain engineering approach to increase the thermopower of [001] Si/Ge superlattices (SLs) beyond this relation. Using two independent theoretical modeling approaches, we show that new bands form due to the structural symmetry, and, the SL bands are highly tunable with epitaxial substrate strain. The band shifts lead to a modulated thermopower, with a peak $\sim$5-fold enhancement in strained Si/Ge SLs in the high doping regime.
Using advanced ab-initio calculations, we describe the formation and confinement of a two-dimensional electron gas in short-period ($\simeq$4 nm) Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$ superlattices as function of Nb doping. We predict complete two-dimensional confinement for doping concentrations higher than 70%. In agreement with previous observations, we find a large thermopower enhancement at room temperature. However, this effect is primarily determined by dilution of the mobile charge over a multitude of weakly occupied bands. As a general rule, we conclude that thermopower in similar heterostructures will …
In this paper we explore the different mechanisms that affect the thermopower of a band insulating perovskite (in this case, SrTiO$_3$) when subject to strain (both compressive or tensile). We analyze the high temperature, entropy dominated limit and the lower temperature, energy-transport regime. We observe that the effect of strain in the high-temperature Seebeck coefficient is small at the concentration levels of interest for thermoelectric applications. However, the effective mass changes substantially with strain, which produces an opposite effect to that of the degeneracy-breakups produc…
We analyze the cross-plane miniband transport in n-doped [001] silicon (Si)/germanium (Ge) superlattices using an effective mass approximation (EMA) approach that correctly accounts for the indirect nature of the Si and Ge band gaps. Direct-gap based EMA has been employed so far to investigate the electronic properties of these superlattices, that does not accurately predict transport properties. We use the Boltzmann transport equation framework in combination with the EMA band analysis, and predict that significant improvement of the thermopower of n-doped Si/Ge superlattices can be achieved …
Using first principles density functional theory calculations, we show a semimetal to semiconducting electronic phase transition for bulk TiS 2 by applying uniform biaxial tensile strain. This electronic phase transition is triggered by charge transfer from Ti to S, which eventually reduces the overlap between Ti-(d) and S-(p) orbitals. The electronic transport calculations show a large anisotropy in electrical conductivity and thermopower, which is due to the difference in the effective masses along the in-plane and out of plane directions. Strain induced opening of band gap together with cha…
We have investigated two-dimensional thermoelectric properties in transition metal oxide heterostructures. In particular, we adopted an unprecedented approach to direct tuning of the 2D carrier density using fractionally δ-doped oxide superlattices. By artificially controlling the carrier density in the 2D electron gas that emerges at a LaxSr1-xTiO3 δ-doped layer, we demonstrate that a thermopower as large as 408 μV K-1 can be reached. This approach also yielded a power factor of the 2D carriers 117 μWcm-1K-2, which is one of the largest reported values from transition metal oxide based materi…
Using optical spectroscopy, we investigated the electrodynamic properties of Nb:SrTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices. In these superlattices, a large enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient (S) has been reported with decreasing Nb:SrTiO3 layer thickness [refer to H. Ohta et al., Nature Mater. 6, 129 (2007)]. By analyzing the optical spectra, we found that the polaron plays an important role in determining the electrodynamic properties of the superlattices. With decreasing Nb:SrTiO3 layer thickness from eleven to one unit cell, we observed a threefold enhancement of the polaron effective mass and relaxat…
We present a detailed x-ray diffraction study of the strain in InAs/GaSb superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The superlattices were grown with either InSb or GaAs interfaces. We show that the superlattice morphology, either planar or nanostructured, is dependent on the chemical bonds at the heterointerfaces. In both cases, the misfit strain has been determined for the superlattice layers and the interfaces. We also determined how the magnitude and sign of this strain is crucial in governing the morphology of the superlattice. Our analysis suggests that the growth of self-assembled n…
Short period ferroelectric/ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO)/PbTiO3 (PTO) superlattices are studied using density functional theory. Contrary to the trends in paraelectric/ferroelectric superlattices the polarization remains nearly constant for PTO concentrations below 50%. In addition, a significant decrease in the c/a ratio below the PTO values were observed. Using a superlattice effective Hamiltonian we predict an enhancement in the d33 piezoelectric coefficient peaking at ~75% PTO concentration due to the different polarization-strain coupling in PTO and BTO layers. Further analysis reveals that …
Substrate strain mediated adatom density distributions have been calculated for Cu<111> surfaces. Complemented by Monte Carlo calculations a hexagonal close packaged adatom superlattice in a coverage range up to 0.045 ML is derived. Conditions for the stability of the superlattice against nucleation and degradation are analyzed using simple neighborhood models. Such models are also used to investigate the dynamic of adatoms within their superlattice neighborhood. Collective modes of adatom diffusion are proposed from the analogy with bulk lattice dynamics and methods for measurement are sugges…
We report on growth and ferroelectric (FE) properties of superlattices (SLs) composed of the FE BaTiO3 and the paraelectric (PE) CaTiO3. Previous theories have predicted that the polarization in (BaTiO3)n/(CaTiO3)n SLs increases as the sublayer thickness (n) increases when the same strain state is maintained. However, our BaTiO3/CaTiO3 SLs show a varying lattice-strain state and systematic reduction in polarization with increasing n while coherently-strained SLs with n=1, 2 show a FE polarization of ca. 8.5 uC/cm^2. We suggest that the strain coupling plays more important role in FE properties…
Using first-principles calculations within generalized gradient approximation, the electronic and magnetic properties of zinc blende (zb) CrP/MnP superlattice are investigated. The equilibrium lattice constant is calculated to be $5.33\,$Å. The stability of ferromagnetic zb CrP/MnP superlattice against antiferromagnetism is considered and it is found that the ferromagnetic CrP/MnP superlattice is more stable than the antiferromagnetic one. It is shown that at the equilibrium lattice constant the CrP/MnP superlattice does not show any half metallicity mainly due to the minority $t_{2g}$ states …
We report on a direct measurement of cation and anion sub-lattice strain in an InAs/GaSb type-II strained layer superlattice (T2SLs) using atomic resolution Z-contrast imaging and advanced image processing. Atomic column positions in InAs and GaSb are determined by separating the cation and anion peak intensities. Analysis of the InAs/GaSb T2SLs reveals the compressive strain in the nominal GaSb layer and tensile strain at interfaces between constituent layers, which indicate In incorporation into the nominal GaSb layer and the formation of GaAs like interfaces, respectively. The results are c…
Epitaxy forms the basis of modern electronics and optoelectronics. We report coherent atomically-thin superlattices, in which different transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers--despite large lattice mismatches--are repeated and integrated without dislocations. Grown by a novel omnidirectional epitaxy, these superlattices display fully-matched lattice constants across heterointerfaces while maintaining a surprisingly isotropic lattice structure and triangular symmetry. This strong epitaxial strain is precisely engineered via the nanoscale supercell dimensions, thereby enabling broad tuning o…
We report first-principles calculations on the coupling between epitaxial strain, polarization, and oxygen octahedra rotations in monodomain (PbTiO$_{3}$)$_{n}$/(SrTiO$_{3}$)$_{n}$ superlattices. We show how the interplay between (i) the epitaxial strain and (ii) the electrostatic conditions, can be used to control the orientation of the main axis of the system. The electrostatic constrains at the interface facilitate the rotation of the polarization and, as a consequence, we predict large piezoelectric responses at epitaxial strains smaller than those that would be required considering only s…
We report on quantification and elastic strain mapping in two artificial BaZrO3/BaTiO3 (BZ/BT) superlattices having periods of 6.6 nm and 11 nm respectively, grown on (001) SrTiO3 single crystal substrate by pulsed laser deposition technique. The methodology consists of a combination of high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and nanobeam electron diffraction associated with dedicated algorithm for diffraction patterns processing originally developed for semiconductors to record the strains at atomic scale. Both in-plane and out-of-plane elastic strains were then determined a…
Epitaxial strain energies of epitaxial films and bulk superlattices are studied via first-principles total energy calculations using the local-density approximation. Anharmonic effects due to large lattice mismatch, beyond the reach of the harmonic elasticity theory, are found to be very important in Cu/Au (lattice mismatch 12%), Cu/Ag (12%) and Ni/Au (15%). We find that <001> is the elastically soft direction for biaxial expansion of Cu and Ni, but it is <201> for large biaxial compression of Cu, Ag, and Au. The stability of superlattices is discussed in terms of the coherency strain and inte…
We report calculations of the electronic structure, vibrational properties and transport for the p-type semiconductors, SrAg$Ch$F ($Ch$=S, Se and Te). We find soft phonons with low frequency optical branches intersecting the acoustic modes below 50 $cm^{-1}$, indicative of a material with low thermal conductivity. The bands at and near the valence band maxima are highly two dimensional, which leads to high thermopowers even at high carrier concentrations, which is a combination that suggests good thermoelectric performance. These materials may be regarded as bulk realizations of superlattice t…
We study the influence of residual strain in InGaAs/InAlAs superlattice (SL) on the ultrafast photocarrier dynamics under femtosecond laser excitation. We propose and fabricate a novel-designed strained InGaAs/InAlAs SL which allows us to obtain an ultrashort photocarrier relaxation time of $τ\sim$ 1.5 ps without Be-doping of the InGaAs photoconductor. We assume two dominant mechanisms to be responsible for a sharp reduction of $τ$: photocarriers trapping by defect levels in InAlAs barriers and increased photocarriers scattering at InGaAs/InAlAs interface roughness due to residual strain in th…
By combining first-principles simulations including an on-site Coulomb repulsion term and Boltzmann theory, we demonstrate how the interplay of quantum confinement and epitaxial strain allows to selectively design $n$- and $p$-type thermoelectric response in (LaNiO$_3$)$_3$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_1(001)$ superlattices. In particular, varying strain from $-4.9$ to $+2.9\%$ tunes the Ni orbital polarization at the interfaces from $-6$ to $+3\%$. This is caused by an electron redistribution among Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$- and $3d_{z^2}$-derived quantum well states which respond differently to strain. Owing to thi…
We present first-principles calculations of the structural phase behavior of the [1:1] \pzta\ superlattice and the \ptoa\ and \pzoa\ parent compounds as a function of in-plane epitaxial strain. A symmetry analysis is used to identify the phases and clarify how they arise from an interplay between different kinds of structural distortions, including out-of-plane and in-plane polar modes, rotation of oxygen octahedra around out-of-plane or in-plane axes, and an anti-polar mode. Symmetry-allowed intermode couplings are identified and used to elucidate the nature of the observed phase transitions.…
Using first principles calculations, we determined the epitaxial-strain dependence of the ground state of the 1:1 SrCrO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice. The superlattice layering leads to significant changes in the electronic states near the Fermi level, derived from Cr $t_{2g}$ orbitals. An insulating phase is found when the tensile strain is greater than 2.2\% relative to unstrained cubic SrTiO$_3$. The insulating character is shown to arise from Cr $t_{2g}$ orbital ordering, which is produced by an in-plane polar distortion that couples to the superlattice d-bands and is stabilized by epitaxial …
The HgTe quantum well (QW) is a well-characterized two-dimensional topological insulator (2D-TI). Its band gap is relatively small (typically on the order of 10 meV), which restricts the observation of purely topological conductance to low temperatures. Here, we utilize the strain-dependence of the band structure of HgTe QWs to address this limitation. We use $\text{CdTe}-\text{Cd}_{0.5}\text{Zn}_{0.5}\text{Te}$ strained-layer superlattices on GaAs as virtual substrates with adjustable lattice constant to control the strain of the QW. We present magneto-transport measurements, which demonstrat…
Epitaxial BiFeO3/SrRuO3 superlattices have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on a (001) oriented LaAlO3 substrate and probed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. To investigate the structural competition between rhombohedral BiFeO3 and orthorhombic SrRuO3 the total thickness of all SLs was kept constant and the bilayer thickness (period) Λ was varied. The interlayer strain effects are therefore tuned from large strain effects (short Λ period) to quasi-relaxed structure (large Λ). A complementary investigation using X-ray diffraction and phonon dynamics hints to change from a rhombo…
On the basis of detailed first-principles calculations and semi-classical Boltzmann transport, the anisotropic thermoelectric transport properties of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Sb$_2$Te$_3$ under strain were investigated. It was found that due to compensation effects of the strain dependent thermopower and electrical conductivity, the related powerfactor will decrease under applied in-plane strain for Bi$_2$Te$_3, while being stable for Sb$_2$Te$_3$. A clear preference for thermoelectric transport under hole-doping, as well as for the in-plane transport direction was found for both tellurides. In contra…
By combining ab initio simulations including an on-site Coulomb repulsion term and Boltzmann theory, we explore the thermoelectric properties of (LaNiO$_3$)$_n$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_n$(001) superlattices ($n=1,3$) and identify a strong dependence on confinement, spacer thickness, and epitaxial strain. While the system with $n=3$ shows modest values of the Seebeck coefficient and power factor, the simultaneous reduction of the LaNiO$_3$ region and the LaAlO$_3$ spacer thickness to single layers results in a strong enhancement, in particular of the in-plane values. This effect can be further tuned by us…
Armchair graphene nanoribbons, when forming a superlattice, can be classified in different topological phases, with or without edge states. By means of tight-binding and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we studied the electronic and mechanical properties of some of these superlattices. MD shows that fracture in modulated superlattices is brittle, as for unmodulated ribbons, and that occurs at the thinner regions, with staggered superlattices achieving a larger fracture strain. We found a general mechanism to induce a topological transition with strain, related to the electronic p…

The structural and electronic properties in common anion (GaSb)_1/(InSb)_1 and common cation (InAs)_1/(InSb)_1 [111] ordered superlattices have been determined using the local density total energy full potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The influence of the ordering direction, strain conditions and atomic substitution on the electronic properties of technological and experimental interest (such as energy band-gaps and charge carrier localization in the different sublattices) were determined. The results show an appreciable energy band-gap narrowing compared to the band-gap avera…
The effect of epitaxial strain on the phonon spectra, crystal structure, spontaneous polarization, dielectric, piezoelectric, and elastic properties of (001)-oriented ferroelectric (BaTiO$_3$)$_m$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_n$ superlattices ($m = n = {}$1-4) was studied using the first-principles density-functional theory. The ground state of free-standing superlattices is the monoclinic $Cm$ polar phase. Under the in-plane biaxial compressive strain, it transforms to tetragonal $P4mm$ polar phase, and under the in-plane biaxial tensile strain, it transforms to orthorhombic $Amm2$ polar phase. When changing…
(LaNiO3)n/(SrMnO3)2 superlattices were grown using ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. In situ reflection high energy electron diffraction and x-ray scattering has been used to characterize the structural properties of the superlattices, which are strained to the SrTiO3 substrates. The superlattices exhibit excellent crystallinity and interfacial roughness of less than one unit cell. A metal-insulator transition is observed as $n$ is decreased from 4 to 1. Analysis of the transport data suggests an evolution from gapped insulator (n=1) to hopping conductor (n=2) to metal (n=4) with increasi…
Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we examined the ground state property of LaTiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattice. Total energy calculations, taking account of the structural distortions, $U$ dependence, and exchange correlation functional dependence, show that the spin and orbital ground state can be controlled systematically by the epitaxial strain. In the wide range of strains, ferromagnetic spin and antiferro orbital ordering are stabilized, which is notably different from the previously reported ground state in titanate systems. By applying large tensile strains, th…
Negative capacitance in BaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in an atomistic effective Hamiltonian model, using fluctuation formulas for responses to the local macroscopic field that incorporates depolarizing fields. We show epitaxial strain can tune the negative capacitance of the BaTiO$_3$ ferroelectric layer and the overall capacitance of the system over a broad temperature range. In addition, we predict and explain an original switching of the negative capacitance from the BaTiO$_3$ layer to the SrTiO$_3$ layer at low temperatures for intermediate st…
Artificially engineered superlattices were designed and fabricated to induce different growth mechanisms and structural characteristics. DC sputtering was used to grow ferromagnetic (La$_{0.8}$Ba$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$) / ferroelectric (Ba$_{0.25}$Sr$_{0.75}$TiO$_3$ or BaTiO$_3$) superlattices. We systematically modified the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer to analyze dimensional and structural effects on the superlattices with different structural characteristics. The crystalline structure was characterized by X-Ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The magnetic and electronic pro…
We propose type-II GaAsSb/GaAsN superlattices (SLs) lattice-matched to GaAs as a novel material for the 1 eV sub-cells present in highly efficient GaAs/Ge-based multi-junction solar cells. We demonstrate that, among other benefits, the spatial separation of Sb and N allows a better control over composition and lattice matching, avoiding the growth problems related to the concomitant presence of both elements in GaAsSbN layers. This approach not only reduces clustering and improves crystal quality and interface abruptness, but also allows for additional control of the effective bandgap in the 1…
First-principles density functional calculations are performed to investigate the interplay between inplane strains and interface effects in 1by1 PbTiO3/SrTiO3 and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices of tetragonal symmetry. One particular emphasis of this study is to conduct side-by-side comparisons on various ferroelectric properties in short-period superlattices and in constituent bulk materials, which turns out to be rather useful in terms of obtaining valuable insight into the different physics when ferroelectric bulks form superlattices. The various properties that are studied in this work includ…
Using density functional theory calculations including a Hubbard $U$ term we explore the effect of strain and confinement on the electronic ground state of superlattices containing the band insulator LaAlO$_3$ and the correlated metal LaNiO$_3$. Besides a suppression of holes at the apical oxygen, a central feature is the asymmetric response to strain in single unit cell superlattices: For tensile strain a band gap opens due to charge disproportionation at the Ni sites with two distinct magnetic moments of 1.45$μ_{\rm B}$ and 0.71$μ_{\rm B}$. Under compressive stain, charge disproportionation …
Graphene superlattices formed by periodic strain are considered theoretically. It is shown that electron energy spectrum consists of minibands obtained by folding of the cone at the boundaries of the superlattice Brillouin zone with very narrow anticrossing regions. Light absorption under direct interminiband transitions is shown to be frequency dependent and dichroic. Giant dichroism of absorption is demonstrated for doped graphene superlattices. Asymmetrical graphene superlattices act as quantum ratchets allowing for generation of photocurrent at absorption of normally incident light. The he…
Two dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) have very interesting properties for optoelectronic devices. In this work we theoretically investigate and predict that superlattices comprised of MoS$_{2}$ and WSe$_{2}$ multilayers possess continuously tunable electronic structure having direct band gap. The tunability is controlled by the thickness ratio of MoS$_{2}$ versus WSe$_{2}$ of the superlattice. When this ratio goes from 1:2 to 5:1, the dominant K-K direct band gap is continuously tuned from 0.14 eV to 0.5 eV. The gap stays direct against -0.6% to 2% in-layer strain and up to …
We have studied the influence of epitaxial strain on magnetic orderings and the couplings between the spin and polar phonons in the 1:1 SrMnO$_3$/LaMnO$_3$ superlattice from first principles. Magnetic phase transitions of the superlattice induced by epitaxial strain are observed, consistent with previous reports. We find that oxygen octahedral rotations lower the ground state energy but do not destroy the magnetic phase transitions induced by strain. We compute zone center phonon frequencies and eigenvectors as functions of epitaxial strain and magnetic ordering. A substantial increase of the …
Atomically precise superlattices involving transition metal oxides provide a unique opportunity to engineer correlated electron physics using strain (modulated by choice of substate) and quantum confinement (controlled by layer thickness). Here we use the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) to study Ni E$_g$ $d$-orbital polarization in strained LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices consisting of four layers of nominally metallic NiO$_2$ and four layers of insulating AlO$_2$ separated by LaO layers. The layer-resolved orbital polarization is calculate…
In pursuit of rational control of orbital polarization, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of single unit cell superlattices of the correlated metal LaNiO$_3$ and the band insulator LaAlO$_3$. Polarized x-ray absorption spectra show a distinct asymmetry in the orbital response under strain. A splitting of orbital energies consistent with octahedral distortions is found for the case of compressive strain. In sharp contrast, for tensile strain, no splitting is found although a strong orbital polarization is present. Density functional theory calculations including a Hubbard…
Using first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory, we show a strong strain dependence of magnetic order in (LaMnO$_{3}$)$_n$/(SrMnO$_{3}$)$_{2n}$ (001) superlattices with $n=1,2$. The epitaxial strain lifts the degeneracy of Mn $e_{g}$ orbitals, thus inducing an inherent orbital order, which in turn strongly affects the ferromagnetic double exchange of itinerant $e_{g}$ electrons, competing with the antiferromagnetic superexchange of localized $t_{2g}$ electrons. For the case of tensile strain induced by SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrate, we find that the ground state is A-typ…
The peculiar defect-related photon emission processes in 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have become a topic of intense research due to their potential applications in quantum information and sensing technologies. Recent efforts have focused on activating and modulating the defect energy levels in hBN by methods that can be integrated on a chip, and understanding the underlying physical mechanism. Here, we report on exotic single photon and enhanced deep-level emissions in 2D hBN strain superlattice, which is fabricated by transferring multilayer hBN onto hexagonal close-packed silica spheres…
In two-dimensional (2D) twisted bilayers, the van der Waals (vdW) interlayer interaction introduces atomic-scale reconstruction at interface by locally rotating lattice to form strain-field vortex networks in their moiré superlattice. However, direct imaging the tiny local lattice rotation of the strain-field vortex requires extremely high spatial resolution and is an outstanding challenge in experiment. Here, a topmost small-period graphene moiré pattern is introduced to magnify sub-Angstrom distortions of the lattice and tiny local lattice rotation in underlying twisted bilayer graphene (TBG…

The point group symmetry of materials is closely related to their physical properties and quite important for material modeling. However, superlattice materials have more complex symmetry conditions than crystals due to their multilevel structural feature. Thus, a theoretical framework is proposed to characterize and determine the point group symmetry of nonmagnetic superlattice materials systematically. A variety of examples are presented to show the symmetry features of superlattice materials in different dimensions and scales. In addition, the deformation induced symmetry breaking phenomeno…
By using DFT+U, we explore the formation of oxygen vacancies and their impact on the electronic and magnetic structure in strained bulk LaNiO3 and (LaNiO3)$_1$/(LaAlO3)$_1$(001) superlattices. For bulk LaNiO3, we find that epitaxial strain induces a substantial anisotropy in the oxygen vacancy formation energy. In particular, tensile strain promotes the selective reduction of apical oxygen, which may explain why the recently observed superconductivity of infinite-layer nickelates is limited to strained films. For (LaNiO3)$_1$/(LaAlO3)$_1$(001) superlattices, the simulations reveal that the NiO…
The observation of novel physical phenomena such as Hofstadter's butterfly, topological currents and unconventional superconductivity in graphene have been enabled by the replacement of SiO$_2$ with hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) as a substrate and by the ability to form superlattices in graphene/hBN heterostructures. These devices are commonly made by etching the graphene into a Hall-bar shape with metal contacts. The deposition of metal electrodes, the design and specific configuration of contacts can have profound effects on the electronic properties of the devices possibly even affecting th…
The stability of high-symmetry $P4mm$ polar phase in eleven ferroelectric perovskite superlattices with the polar discontinuity is studied from first principles. In most superlattices, this phase exhibits either the ferroelectric or the antiferrodistortive instability, or both of them. The structure of the ground state and, for a number of systems, also of metastable phases in these superlattices is found. The spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric properties of superlattices are calculated. The appearance of high piezoelectric coefficients (up to 150-270 pC/N) in some superlattices is ass…
Strain engineering of graphene takes advantage of one of the most dramatic responses of Dirac electrons enabling their manipulation via strain-induced pseudo-magnetic fields. Numerous theoretically proposed devices, such as resonant cavities and valley filters, as well as novel phenomena, such as snake states, could potentially be enabled via this effect. These proposals, however, require strong, spatially oscillating magnetic fields while to date only the generation and effects of pseudo-gauge fields which vary at a length scale much larger than the magnetic length have been reported. Here we…
We propose new confinement structures similar to heterostructures and superlattices. The new heteostructures can be obtained by applying strain to a single material in a periodic or aperiodic way. The conversion of an indirect gap into an optical active direct or quasi-direct gap problem has also been investigated together with the role of zone folding in this phenomenon.
