A $2π$ phase shift across a Josephson junction in a topological superconductor injects vortices into the chiral edge modes at opposite ends of the junction. When two vortices are fused they transfer charge into a metal contact. We calculate the time dependent current profile for the fusion process, which consists of $\pm e/2$ charge pulses that flip sign if the world lines of the vortices are braided prior to the fusion. This is an electrical signature of the non-Abelian exchange of Majorana zero-modes.
Abrikosov vortices in Fe-based superconductors are a promising platform for hosting Majorana zero modes. Their adiabatic exchange is a key ingredient for Majorana-based quantum computing. However, the adiabatic braiding process can not be realized in state-of-the-art experiments. We propose to replace the infinitely slow, long-path braiding by only slightly moving vortices in a special geometry without actually physically exchanging the Majoranas, like a Majorana carousel. Although the resulting finite-time gate is not topologically protected, it is robust against variations in material specif…
This is a tutorial review of methods to braid the world lines of non-Abelian anyons (Majorana zero-modes) in topological superconductors. That "Holy Grail" of topological quantum information processing has not yet been reached in the laboratory, but there now exists a variety of platforms in which one can search for the Majorana braiding statistics. After an introduction to the basic concepts of braiding we discuss how one might be able to braid immobile Majorana zero-modes, bound to the end points of a nanowire, by performing the exchange in parameter space, rather than in real space. We expl…
After a decade of intense theoretical and experimental efforts, demonstrating braiding of Majorana modes remains an unsolved problem in condensed matter physics due to platform specific challenges. In this work, we propose topological superconductor -- magnetic multilayer heterostructures with on-chip microwave cavity readout as a novel platform for initializing, braiding and reading out Majorana modes. Stray fields from a skyrmion in the magnetic layers can nucleate a vortex in the topological superconducting layer. Such a vortex is known to host Majorana bound states at its core. Through ana…
Majorana zero-modes in a superconductor are midgap states localized in the core of a vortex or bound to the end of a nanowire. They are anyons with non-Abelian braiding statistics, but when they are immobile one cannot demonstrate this by exchanging them in real space and indirect methods are needed. As a real-space alternative, we propose to use the chiral motion along the boundary of the superconductor to braid a mobile vortex in the edge channel with an immobile vortex in the bulk. The measurement scheme is fully electrical and deterministic: edge vortices ($π$-phase domain walls) are creat…
The non-Abelian braiding of Majorana fermions is one of the most promising operations providing a key building block for the realization of topological quantum computation. Recently, the chiral Majorana fermions were observed in a hybrid junction btween a quantum anomalous Hall insulator and an s-wave superconductor. Here we show that if a quantum dot or Majorana zero mode couples to the chiral Majorana fermions, the resulting resonant exchange of chiral Majorana fermions can lead to the non-Abelian braiding. Remarkably, any operation in the braid group can be achieved by this scheme. We furth…
We numerically demonstrate that the topological corner states residing in the corners of higher-order topological insulator possess non-Abelian braiding properties. Such topological corner states are Dirac fermionic modes other than Majorana zero-modes. We claim that Dirac fermionic modes protected by nontrivial topology also support non-Abelian braiding. An analytical description on such non-Abelian braiding is conducted based on the vortex-induced Dirac-type fermionic modes. The braiding operator for Dirac fermionic modes is also analytically derivated and compared with the Majorana zero-mod…
Anyonic fractional charges $e^*$ have been detected by autocorrelation shot noise at a quantum point contact (QPC) between two fractional quantum Hall edges. We find that the autocorrelation noise can also show a fingerprint of Abelian anyonic fractional statistics. We predict the noise of electrical tunneling current $I$ at the QPC of the fractional-charge detection setup, when anyons are dilutely injected, from an additional edge biased by a voltage, to the setup in equilibrium. At large voltages, the nonequilibrium noise is {\it reduced} below the thermal equilibrium noise by the value $2 e…
Majorana zero-modes (MZMs) are spatially-localized zero-energy fractional quasiparticles with non-Abelian braiding statistics that hold a great promise for topological quantum computing. Due to its particle-antiparticle equivalence, an MZM exhibits robust resonant Andreev reflection and 2e2/h quantized conductance at low temperature. By utilizing variable-tunnel-coupled scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we study tunneling conductance of vortex bound states on FeTe0.55Se0.45 superconductors. We report observations of conductance plateaus as a function of tunnel coupling for zero-energy vortex bo…
Vortex core polarity switching in NiFe disks has been evidenced using an all-electrical rectification scheme. Both simulation and experiments yield a consistent loss of the rectified signal when driving the core at high powers near its gyrotropic resonant frequency. The frequency range over which the loss occurs grows and shifts with increasing signal power, consistent with non-linear core dynamics and periodic switching of the core polarity induced by the core attaining its critical velocity. We demonstrate that core polarity switching can be impeded by displacing the core towards the disk's …
A magnetic vortex is a curling magnetic structure realized in a ferromagnetic disk, which is a promising candidate of a memory cell for future nonvolatile data storage devices. Thus, understanding of the stability and dynamical behaviour of the magnetic vortex is a major requirement for developing magnetic data storage technology. Since the experimental proof of the existence of a nanometre-scale core with out-of-plane magnetisation in the magnetic vortex, the dynamics of a vortex has been investigated intensively. However, the way to electrically control the core magnetisation, which is a key…
We demonstrate a method for manipulating small ensembles of vortices in multiply-connected superconducting structures. A micron-size magnetic particle attached to the tip of a silicon cantilever is used to locally apply magnetic flux through the superconducting structure. By scanning the tip over the surface of the device, and by utilizing the dynamical coupling between the vortices and the cantilever, a high-resolution spatial map of the different vortex configurations is obtained. Moving the tip to a particular location in the map stabilizes a distinct multi-vortex configuration. Thus, the s…
We investigate a heterostructure system with a spin-orbit coupled semiconductor sandwiched by an s-wave superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator, which supports Majorana fermions (MFs) at the superconducting vortex cores. We propose a scheme of transporting and braiding the MFs, which only requires application of point-like gate voltages in a system with nano-meter patterns. By solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation numerically, we monitor the time evolutions of MF wave-functions and show that the braiding of MFs with non-Abelian statistics can be achieved by adiabatic sw…
Despite fermion doubling, a two-dimensional quasi-relativistic spin-1/2 system can still lead to true fractionalization of electrical charge, when a massive ordered phase supports a "half-vortex". Such topological defect is possible when the order parameter in form of Dirac mass is described by two $U(1)$ angles, and each of them winds by an angle $π$ around a point. We demonstrate that such a mass configuration in an eight-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian exhibits only a single bound zero mode, and therefore binds the charge of $e/2$. In graphene, for example, such an ordered phase is provided b…
We propose to use the recently predicted two-dimensional `weak-pairing' $p_x + ip_y$ superfluid state of fermionic cold atoms as a platform for topological quantum computation. In the core of a vortex, this state supports a zero-energy Majorana mode, which moves to finite energy in the corresponding topologically trivial `strong-pairing' state. By braiding vortices in the `weak-pairing' state, unitary quantum gates can be applied to the Hilbert space of Majorana zero-modes. For read-out of the topological qubits, we propose realistic schemes suitable for atomic superfluids.
Chiral Majorana edge modes are theoretically proposed to perform braiding operations for the potential quantum computation. Here, we suggest a scheme to regulate trajectories of the chiral Majorana fermion based on a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI)-topological superconductor heterostructure. An applied external gate voltage to the QAHI region introduces a dynamical phase so that the outgoing Majorana fermions can be prominently tuned to different leads. The trajectory is mechanically analyzed and the electrical manipulation is represented by the oscillating transmission coefficients ve…
Magnetic vortices are characterized by the senses of in-plane magnetization chirality and by the polarity of the vortex core. The electrical control of vortex polarity and chirality is highly demanded not only for fundamental understanding on spin dynamics in nano-disks under different circumstances, but also for technological applications, such as magnetic non-volatile memories and spin torque oscillators for neuromorphic computing. Here we report a novel approach that enables one to electrically control both the vortex chirality and polarity with low energy consumption. Thorough micromagneti…
Some models describing unconventional fractional quantum Hall states predict quasiparticles that obey nonabelian quantum statistics. The most prominent example is the Moore-Read model for the $ν=5/2$ state, in which the ground state is a superconductor of composite fermions, and the charged excitations are vortices in that superconductor. In this paper we develop a physical picture of the nonabelian statistics of these vortices. Considering first the positions of the vortices as fixed, we define a set of single-particle states at and near the core of each vortex, and employ general properties …
We propose a hierarchical architecture for building "logical" Majorana zero modes using "physical" Majorana zero modes at the Y-junctions of a hexagonal network of semiconductor nanowires. Each Y-junction contains three "physical" Majoranas, which hybridize when placed in close proximity, yielding a single effective Majorana mode near zero energy. The hybridization of effective Majorana modes on neighboring Y-junctions is controlled by applied gate voltages on the links of the honeycomb network. This gives rise to a tunable tight-binding model of effective Majorana modes. We show that selectin…
The search for topological superconductors and non-Abelian Majorana modes ranks among the most fascinating topics in condensed matter physics. There now exist several fundamental superconducting phases which host symmetry protected or chiral Majorana modes. The latter, namely the chiral Majorana modes are protected by Chern numbers in even dimensions. Here we propose to observe novel chiral Majorana modes by realizing Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, i.e. the pairing density wave (PDW) phase in a Weyl semimetal which breaks time-reversal symmetry. Without symmetry protection, the 3D gap…
Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy has been used to directly image the magnetization dynamics of nano-contact (NC) spin-torque vortex oscillators (STVOs) when phase-locked to an injected microwave (RF) current. The Kerr images reveal free layer magnetization dynamics that extend outside the NC footprint, where they cannot be detected electrically, but which are crucial to phase-lock STVOs that share common magnetic layers. For a single NC, dynamics were observed not only when the STVO frequency was fully locked to that of the RF current, but also for a partially locked state characterized …
The electric charge density in mesoscopic superconductors with circular symmetry, i.e. disks and cylinders, is studied within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau approach. We found that even in the Meissner state there is a charge redistribution in the sample which makes the sample edge become negatively charged. In the vortex state there is a competition between this Meissner charge and the vortex charge which may change the polarity of the charge at the sample edge with increasing magnetic field. It is shown analytically that in spite of the charge redistribution the mesoscopic sample as a …
We have proposed in this work an original system composed by anti-dots nanopatterned in a ferromagnetic thin film, mimicking negatively the structure of an articial spin ice. In the hysteresis loop we notice the emergency of an anisotropy in the magnetization saturation and in the micromagnetic simulations, in the beginning of the hysteresis loop (relaxation), the formation of a vortex crystal array with vortices in diferent positions possessing random polarization and chirality. The crystal of vortices in this electrically connected sample could be most eficient than those observed in non-con…
Vortex-based spin-torque oscillators can be made from extended spin valves connected to an electrical nanocontact. We study the implementation of frequency shift keying modulation in these oscillators. Upon a square modulation of the current in the 10 MHz range, the vortex frequency follows the current command, with easy identification of the two swapping frequencies in the spectral measurements. The frequency distribution of the output power can be accounted for by convolution transformations of the dc current vortex waveform, and the current modulation. Modeling indicates that the frequency …
We develop a rigorous and highly accurate technique for calculation of the Berry phase in systems with a quadratic Hamiltonian within the context of the Kitaev honeycomb lattice model. The method is based on the recently found solution of the model which uses the Jordan-Wigner-type fermionization in an exact effective spin-hardcore boson representation. We specifically simulate the braiding of two non-Abelian vortices (anyons) in a four vortex system characterized by a two-fold degenerate ground state. The result of the braiding is the non-Abelian Berry matrix which is in excellent agreement w…
Recent discoveries of two-dimensional (2D) superconductors have uncovered various new aspects of physical properties including vortex matter. In this paper, we report transport properties and a dynamical phase diagram at zero magnetic field in ion-gated MoS2. In addition to the universal jump in the current-voltage characteristic showing unambiguous evidence of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, we observed multiple peaks in the temperature- and current-derivative of the electrical resistance, based on which a dynamical phase diagram in the current-temperature plane was cons…
We present a frequency-domain study of the dynamic behavior of a magnetic vortex core within a single Permalloy disk by means of electrical detection and micromagnetic simulations. When exciting the vortex core dynamics in a non-linear regime, the lineshape of the rectified dc signal reveals a resonance peak splitting which depends on the excitation amplitude. Using micromagnetic simulations, we show that at high excitation power the peak splitting originates from the nanosecond time scale quasi-periodic switching of the vortex core polarity. Using lock-in detection, the rectified voltage is i…

We consider the thermoelectric properties of the mixed-dimensional quantum electrodynamics of the relativistic Dirac fermion and Wilson-Fisher boson. These models are self-dual, and can form non-trivial many-body phases depending on the values of chemical potential, background magnetic field and the electromagnetic fine-structure constant. Using particle-vortex duality, we derive a variety of thermoelectric relations for strongly-interacting phases with classic paradigms such as the Wiedemann-Franz law and the Mott's relation in the dual weakly interacting regimes. Besides, at the self-dual po…
