We propose a novel excellent two-dimensional photocatalyst SnN3 monolayer using first-principles calculations. The stability of SnN3 monolayer have been examined via formation energy, phonon spectrum and ab initio molecular dynamics calculations. Large optical absorption capacity plays significant role in the enhancement of photocatalytic splitting of water. The SnN3 monolayer have ultra-high optical absorption capacity in visible region, which is as three and four times as that of SnP3 and MoS2 monolayer, respectively. Available potential and appropriate band positions indicating the ability of overall water splitting even in a wide strain range. Electronic properties of SnN3 monolayer can also be engineered effectively via the external strain, such as the conversion from in-direct band gap to direct band gap. The applied electric field splits the energy levels due to Stark effect, resulting in states accumulation and smaller gap width

Perovskite SrTiO3 (STO) is an attractive photocatalyst for solar water splitting, but suffers from a limited photoresponse in the ultraviolet spectral range due to its wide band gap. By means of hybrid density functional theory calculations, we systematically study engineering its band gap via doping 4d and 5d transition metals M (M=Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir and Pt) and chalcogen elements Y (Y=S and Se). We find that transition metal dopant M either has no effect on STO band gap or introduces detrimental mid-gap states, except for Pd and Pt that are able to reduce the S…
Visible-light photocatalyst titanium dioxide (TiO2) was successfully prepared via a novel and facile single-mode microwave assisted synthesis process. In this one-step synthesis, Ti as target material selectively oxides in magnetic field throughout rapid heating, whose process requires less energy consumption and short time. In obtained TiO2, self-doping of Ti3+ was confirmed, which makes TiO2 performed sufficient light absorption in visible region with wavelength above 400 nm. Such Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 exhibits much narrower optical bandgap (2.14 eV) to compare with stoichiometric TiO2 (3.0-3…

Environmental contamination and human exposure to dyes have dramatically increased over the past decades because of their increasing use in such industries as textiles, paper, plastics, tannery and paints. These dyes can cause deterioration in water quality by imparting color to the water and inducing the photosynthetic activity of aquatic organisms by hindering light penetration. Moreover, some of the dyes are considered carcinogenic and mutagenic for human health. Therefore, efficient treatment and removal of dyes from wastewater have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Photoca…
In this paper, we perform theoretical study on the physical properties of two-dimensional transition metal chalcogenides MX$_{2}$ and M$_{2}$X$_{3}$ (M= Ni, Pd; X= S, Se, Te). These studied materials are classified in three stable phases according to their lattice structures: hexagonal MX$_{2}$, orthorhombic MX$_{2}$ and orthorhombic M$_{2}$X$_{3}$. They have either isotropic or anisotropic in-plane properties depending on their symmetries. In particular, the orthorhombic MX$_{2}$ and M$_{2}$X$_{3}$ have low lattice symmetry and present highly anisotropic properties. The orthorhombic MX$_{2}$ …
Photocatalytic water splitting is a promising renewable energy source as an alternative for limited fossil fuels. In this paper, we studied a new TMD material WSe$_{2}$, which is currently used in heterostructure photocatalysts. To our knowledge, this…
To overcome current serious energy and environmental issues, photocatalytic water splitting holds great promise because it requires only solar energy as an energy input to produce hydrogen. Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors and heterostructures possess several inherent advantages which are more suitable for boosting solar energy than their bulk counterparts. In this work, by performing high-throughput first-principles calculations combined with a semiempirical van der Waals dispersion correction, we first provided the periodic table of band alignment type for van der Waals heterostructures w…
Polar heterogeneous photocatalysts were shown to lead to enhanced charge-carrier separation that results in superior activity for example for photocatalytic water splitting. Promising photocatalyst materials such as oxynitrides can be rendered polar by epitaxial strain, which however also increases their band gap, making them unsuitable for visible light absorption. This suggests a trade-off between small band gaps and polar distortions - both being crucial for the catalyst's efficiency. In this paper we investigate, using density functional theory calculations, the suitability of strained AB(…

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting to generate hydrogen is one of the most studied methods for converting solar energy into clean fuel because of its simplicity and potentially low cost. Despite over 40 years of intensive research, PEC water splitting remains in its early stages with stable efficiencies far less than 10%, a benchmark for commercial applications. Here, we revealed that the desired photocorrosion stability sets a limit of 2.48 eV (relative to the normal hydrogen electrode (NHE)) for the highest possible potential of the valence band (VB) edge of a photocorrosion-resistan…

TiO2 is a wide band-gap semiconductor that has been intensively investigated for photocatalysis and water-spiting. Based on hybrid density functional calculations, we propose adding Bi to TiO2, in the form of dilute Ti_(1-x)Bi_(x)O2 alloys, to efficiently shift the optical absorption to the visible region. Compa…
