We study properties of localized effective spins induced in gapped quantum spin chains by local inhomogeneities of the lattice. As a prototype, we study effective spins induced in impunity sites doped AKLT model by constructing the exact ground state in a matrix product state (MPS) form. We characterize their responses to external fields by studying an extended Zeeman interaction. We also study the antiferromagnetic bond-alternating Heisenberg chain with defect structures. For this model, an MPS representation similar to that for the AKLT model, "a uniform MPS with windows", is constructed, and it gives a good approximation of the ground state. We discuss the trade-off relation between the window length and the precision of the MPS ansatz. The effective exchange interaction between the induced spins is also investigated by using this representation.
We investigate the phase diagram of a quantum spin-1 chain whose Hamiltonian is invariant under a global onsite $A_4$, translation and lattice inversion symmetries. We detect different gapped phases characterized by SPT order and symmetry breaking using matrix product state order parameters. We observe a rich variety of phases of matter characterized by a combination of symmetry breaking and symmetry fractionalization and also the interplay between the onsite and spatial symmetries. Examples of continuous phase transitions directly between topologically nontrivial SPT phases are also observed.
The single-copy entanglement of a given many-body system is defined [J. Eisert and M. Cramer, Phys. Rev. A. 72, 042112 (2005)] as the maximal entanglement deterministically distillable from a bipartition of a single specimen of that system. For critical (gapless) spin chains, it was recently shown that this is exactly half the von Neumann entropy [R. Orus, J. I. Latorre, J. Eisert, and M. Cramer, Phys. Rev. A 73, 060303(R) (2006)], itself defined as the entanglement distillable in the asymptotic limit: i.e. given an infinite number of copies of the system. It is an open question as to what the…
Given a gapped Hamiltonian of a spin chain, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for finding the degenerate ground space projector. The output is an orthonormal set of matrix product states that approximate the true ground space projector up to an inverse polynomial error in any Schatten norm, with a runtime exponential in the degeneracy. Our algorithm is an extension of the recent algorithm of Landau, Vazirani, and Vidick for the nondegenerate case, and it includes the recent improvements due to Huang. The main new idea is to incorporate the local distinguishability of ground states on the hal…
Key properties of a physical system depend on whether it is gapped, i.e. whether its spectral gap has a positive lower bound that is independent of system size. In quantum information theory, the question of whether a system is gapped has essential computational significance as well. Here, we introduce a rigorous renormalization method to prove that a spin chain is gapped. This approach exploits the fact that ground states of gapped systems exhibit decaying correlations. We apply the method to show that two interesting models are gapped, successfully completing proofs even where the previously…
We give an analytical description of long distance entanglement (LDE) mediated by one-dimensional quantum spin chains recently found in numerical studies. We develop a formalism that allows the computation of LDE for weakly interacting probes with gapped many-body systems. At zero temperature, a DC response function determines the ability of the physical system to generate genuine quantum correlations between the probes. We show that the biquadratic Heisenberg spin-1 chain is able to produce LDE in the thermodynamical limit and that the finite antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain maximally entan…
One-dimensional gapped spin chains with symmetry PSU(N) = SU(N)/Z_N are known to possess N different topological phases. In this paper, we introduce a non-local string order parameter which characterizes each of these N phases unambiguously. Numerics confirm that our order parameter allows to extract a quantized topological invariant from a given non-degenerate gapped ground state wave function. Discontinuous jumps in the discrete topological order that arise when varying physical couplings in the Hamiltonian may be used to detect quantum phase transitions between different topological phases.

We exploit the knowledge of the entanglement spectrum in the ground state of the gapped XXZ spin chain to derive asymptotic exact results for the full counting statistics of the transverse magnetisation in a spin block of length. We found that for a subsystem of even length the full counting statistics is Gaussian, while for odd subsystems it is the sum of two Gaussian distributions. We test our analytic predictions with accurate tensor networks simulations. As a byproduct, we also obtain the symmetry (magnetisation) resolved entanglement entropies.
We consider the $C^1$-classification of gapped Hamiltonians introduced in [Fannes-Nachtergaele-Werner, Nachtergaele] as parents Hamiltonians of translation invariant finitely correlated states. Within this family, we show that the number of edge modes, which is equal at the left and right edge, is the complete invariant. The construction proves that translation invariance of the `bulk' ground state does not need to be broken to establish $C^1$-equivalence, namely that the spin chain does not need to be blocked.
We study the thermalization of a small $XX$ chain coupled to long, gapped $XXZ$ leads at either side by observing the relaxation dynamics of the whole system. Using extensive tensor network simulations, we show that such systems, although not integrable, appear to show either extremely slow thermalization or even lack thereof since the two can not be distinguished within the accuracy of our numerics. We show that the persistent oscillations observed in the spin current in the middle of the $XX$ chain are related to eigenstates of the entire system located within the gap of the boundary chains.…
In this paper, we consider classification problem of asymmetric gapped Hamiltonians, which are given as the non-degenerate part of the Hamiltonians introduced in [O1]. We consider the $C^1$-classification, which takes into account the effect of boundaries. We show that the left and right degeneracies of edge ground states are the complete invariant. As a corollary, we consider the bulk-classification problem. We study Hamiltonians that1.are given by translation invariant finite range interactions, 2.are gapped in the bulk, 3.are frustration-free, 4.have uniformly bounded ground state degenerac…
We investigate the entanglement properties of the valence-bond-solid states with generic integer-spin $S$. Using the Schwinger boson representation of the valence-bond-solid states, the entanglement entropy, the von Neumann entropy of a subsystem, is obtained exactly and its relationship with the usual correlation function is clarified. The saturation value of the entanglement entropy, $2 \log_2 (S+1)$, is derived explicitly and is interpreted in terms of the edge-state picture. The validity of our analytical results and the edge-state picture is numerically confirmed. We also propose a novel …
We propose an order parameter for a general one-dimensional gapped system with an open boundary condition. The order parameter can be computed from the ground state entanglement entropy of some regions near one of the boundaries. Hence, it is well-defined even in the presence of arbitrary interaction and disorder. We also show that it is invariant under a finite-depth local quantum circuit, suggesting its stability against an arbitrary local perturbation that does not close the energy gap. Further, it can unambiguously distinguish Majorana chain from a trivial chain under a global fermion pari…
We consider a family of translation-invariant quantum spin chains with nearest-neighbor interactions and derive necessary and sufficient conditions for these systems to be gapped in the thermodynamic limit. More precisely, let $ψ$ be an arbitrary two-qubit state. We consider a chain of $n$ qubits with open boundary conditions and Hamiltonian $H_n(ψ)$ which is defined as the sum of rank-1 projectors onto $ψ$ applied to consecutive pairs of qubits. We show that the spectral gap of $H_n(ψ)$ is upper bounded by $1/(n-1)$ if the eigenvalues of a certain two-by-two matrix simply related to $ψ$ have …
We study the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in gapped integrable lattice models. We use the corner transfer matrix to investigate two prototypical gapped systems with a U(1) symmetry: the complex harmonic chain and the XXZ spin-chain. While the former is a free bosonic system, the latter is genuinely interacting. We focus on a subsystem being half of an infinitely long chain. In both models, we obtain exact expressions for the charged moments and for the symmetry resolved entropies. While for the spin chain we found exact equipartition of entanglement (i.e. all the symmetry resolved …
Numerical studies of the reduced density matrix of a gapped spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-leg ladder find that it has the same form as the Gibbs density matrix of a gapless spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain at a finite temperature determined by the spin gap of the ladder. We investigate this interesting result by considering a model of free fermions on a two-leg ladder (gapped by the inter-chain tunneling operator) and in spin systems on a ladder with a gapped ground state using exact solutions and several controlled approximations. We calculate the reduced density mat…
The existence of quasi-long range order is demonstrated in nonequilibrium steady states in isotropic $XY$ spin chains including of two types of additional terms that each generate a gap in the energy spectrum. The system is driven out of equilibrium by initializing a domain-wall magnetization profile through application of an external magnetic field and switching off the magnetic field at the same time the energy gap is activated. An energy gap is produced by either applying a staggered magnetic field in the $z$ direction or introducing a modulation to the $XY$ coupling. The magnetization, spi…
We introduce a ${\mathbb Z}_2$-index for time reversal invariant Hamiltonians with unique gapped ground state on quantum spin chains. We show this is an invariant of a $C^1$-classification of gapped Hamiltonians.
We propose a scheme for a ground-code measurement-based quantum computer, which enjoys two major advantages. First, every logical qubit is encoded in the gapped degenerate ground subspace of a spin-1 chain with nearest-neighbor two-body interactions, so that it equips built-in robustness against noise. Second, computation is processed by single-spin measurements along multiple chains dynamically coupled on demand, so as to keep teleporting only logical information into a gap-protected ground state of the residual chains after the interactions with spins to be measured are turned off. We descri…
We study the scaling of quantum discord (a measure of quantum correlation beyond entanglement) in spin models analytically and systematically. We find that at finite temperature the block scaling of quantum discord satisfies an area law for any two-local Hamiltonian. We show that generically and heuristically the two-site scaling of quantum discord is similar to that of correlation functions. In particular, at zero temperature it decays exponentially and polynomially in gapped and gapless (critical) systems, respectively; at finite temperature it decays exponentially in both gapped and gapless…
We compute the spin structure factor of XXZ spin chains in the Heisenberg and gapped (Ising) regimes in the high-temperature limit for nonzero magnetization, within the framework of generalized hydrodynamics including diffusive corrections. The structure factor shows a hierarchy of timescales in the gapped phase, owing to $s$-spin magnon bound states (`strings') of various sizes. Although short strings move ballistically, long strings move primarily diffusively as a result of their collisions with short strings. The interplay between these effects gives rise to anomalous power-law decay of the…
There can exist topological obstructions to continuously deforming a gapped Hamiltonian for free fermions into a trivial form without closing the gap. These topological obstructions are closely related to obstructions to the existence of exponentially localized Wannier functions. We show that by taking two copies of a gapped, free fermionic system with complex conjugate Hamiltonians, it is always possible to overcome these obstructions. This allows us to write the ground state in matrix product form using Grassman-valued bond variables, and show insensitivity of the ground state density matrix…
We address the question of the classification of gapped ground states in one dimension that cannot be distinguished by a local order parameter. We introduce a family of quantum spin systems on the one-dimensional chain that have a unique gapped ground state in the thermodynamic limit that is a simple product state but which on the left and right half-infinite chains, have additional zero energy edge states. The models, which we call Product Vacua with Boundary States (PVBS), form phases that depend only on two integers corresponding to the number of edge states at each boundary. They can serve…
Topological phases protected by symmetry can occur in gapped and---surprisingly---in critical systems. We consider non-interacting fermions in one dimension with spinless time-reversal symmetry. It is known that the phases are classified by a topological invariant $ω$ and a central charge $c$. We investigate the correlations of string operators, giving insight into the interplay between topology and criticality. In the gapped phases, these non-local string order parameters allow us to extract $ω$. Remarkably, ratios of correlation lengths are universal. In the critical phases, the scaling dime…
Gapped quantum spin chains with symmetry PSU(N)=SU(N)/Z(N) are known to possess N distinct symmetry protected topological phases. Besides the trivial phase, there are N-1 Haldane phases which are distinguished by the occurrence of massless boundary spins. Motivated by the potential realization in alkaline-earth atomic Fermi gases, we explicitly construct previously unknown Hamiltonians for two classes of chiral AKLT states and we discuss their physical properties. We also point out a deep connection between symmetry protection in gapped and gapless 1D quantum spin systems and its implications …
We study the long-time evolution of the bipartite entanglement in translationally invariant gapped harmonic lattice systems with finite-range interactions. A lower bound for the von Neumann entropy is derived in terms of the purity of the reduced density matrix. It is shown that starting from an initially Gaussian state the entanglement entropy increases at least linearly in time. This implies that the dynamics of gapped (non-critical) harmonic lattice systems cannot be efficiently simulated by algorithms based on matrix-product decompositions of the quantum state.
We propose a topological Euler number to characterize nontrivial topological phases of gapped fermionic systems, which originates from the Gauss-Bonnet theorem on the Riemannian structure of Bloch states established by the real part of the quantum geometric tensor in momentum space. Meanwhile, the imaginary part of the geometric tensor corresponds to the Berry curvature which leads to the Chern number characterization. We discuss the topological numbers induced by the geometric tensor analytically in a general two-band model. As an example, we show that the zero-temperature phase diagram of a …
A key feature of ground states of gapped local 1D Hamiltonians is their relatively low entanglement --- they are well approximated by matrix product states (MPS) with bond dimension scaling polynomially in the length $N$ of the chain, while general states require a bond dimension scaling exponentially. We show that the bond dimension of these MPS approximations can be improved to a constant, independent of the chain length, if we relax our notion of approximation to be more local: for all length-$k$ segments of the chain, the reduced density matrices of our approximations are $ε$-close to thos…
We derive general constraints on order and disorder parameters in Ising symmetric spin chains. Our main result is a theorem showing that every gapped, translationally invariant, Ising symmetric spin chain has either a nonzero order parameter or a nonzero disorder parameter. We also prove two more constraints on order and disorder parameters: (i) it is not possible for a gapped, Ising symmetric spin chain to have both a nonzero order parameter and a nonzero disorder parameter; and (ii) it is not possible for a spin chain of this kind to have a nonzero disorder parameter that is odd under the sy…
We prove the existence of gapped quantum Hamiltonians whose ground states exhibit an infinite entanglement length, as opposed to their finite correlation length. Using the concept of entanglement swapping, the localizable entanglement is calculated exactly for valence bond and finitely correlated states, and the existence of the so--called string-order parameter is discussed. We also report on evidence that the ground state of an antiferromagnetic chain can be used as a perfect quantum channel if local measurements on the individual spins can be implemented.
We introduce a family of quantum spin chains with nearest-neighbor interactions that can serve to clarify and refine the classification of gapped quantum phases of such systems. The gapped ground states of these models can be described as a product vacuum with a finite number of particles bound to the edges. The numbers of particles, n_L and n_R, that can bind to the left and right edges of the finite chains serve as indices of the particular phase a model belongs to. All these ground states, which we call Product Vacua with Boundary States (PVBS) can be described as Matrix Product States (MPS…
We investigate the energy eigenstate Rényi entropy of generic bipartition in the fermionic, bosonic, and spin-1/2 XY chains. When the gap of the theory is large or all the momenta of the excited quasiparticles are large, the Rényi entropy takes a universal form, which is independent of the model, the quasiparticle momenta, and the subsystem connectedness. We calculate analytically the Rényi entropy in the extremely gapped limit and find different additional contributions to the universal Rényi entropy in various models. The corrections to the universal Rényi entropy cannot be neglected when th…
We consider the Ising model in a transverse field with long-range antiferromagnetic interactions that decay as a power law with their distance. We study both the phase diagram and the entanglement properties as a function of the exponent of the interaction. The phase diagram can be used as a guide for future experiments with trapped ions. We find two gapped phases, one dominated by the transverse field, exhibiting quasi long range order, and one dominated by the long range interaction, with long range Néel ordered ground states. We determine the location of the quantum critical points separati…
We show that, when a finite anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain in the gapped regime is driven far from equilibrium, oppositely polarized ferromagnetic domains build up at the edges of the chain, thus suppressing quantum spin transport. As a consequence, a negative differential conductivity regime arises, where increasing the driving decreases the current. The above results are explained in terms of magnon localization and are shown to be structurally stable against breaking of integrability.
We investigate the persistence of spectral gaps of one-dimensional frustration free quantum lattice systems under weak perturbations and with open boundary conditions. Assuming the interactions of the system satisfy a form of local topological quantum order, we prove explicit lower bounds on the ground state spectral gap and higher gaps for spin and fermion chains. By adapting previous methods using the spectral flow, we analyze the bulk and edge dependence of lower bounds on spectral gaps.
We propose and analyze a new approach to the coherent control and manipulation of quantum degrees of freedom in disordered, interacting systems in the many-body localized phase. Our approach leverages a number of unique features of many-body localization: a lack of thermalization, a locally gapped spectrum, and slow dephasing. Using the technique of quantum phase estimation, we demonstrate a protocol that enables the local preparation of a many-body system into an effective eigenstate. This leads to the ability to encode information and control interactions without full microscopic knowledge o…
We present power-law relaxation behavior of the local magnetizations in the equilibration dynamics of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg spin chain as an isolated integrable quantum system. We perform the exact time evolution of the expectation values of the local spin operators by evaluating them with the determinant formula of the form factors. We construct such an initial quantum state that has a localized profile of the local magnetizations, and perform the exact time evolution over a very long period of time. We show that the local magnetization relaxes as some power of the time variable with no def…
For the classification of SPT phases, defining an index is a central problem. In the famous paper [PTBO1], Pollmann, Tuner, Berg, and Oshikawa introduced ${\mathbb Z}_2$-indices for injective matrix products states (MPS) which have either ${\mathbb Z}_2\times {\mathbb Z}_2$ dihedral group (of $π$-rotations about $x$, $y$, and $z$-axes) symmetry, time-reversal symmetry, or reflection symmetry. The first two are on-site symmetries. In [O4], an index for on-site symmetries, which generalizes the index in [PTBO1], was introduced for general unique gapped ground state phases in quantum spin chains.…
