We show that the phase II upgrade of the CMS tracking detector could enable the experiment to trigger on very low mass $\mathcal{O}(1\,\text{GeV})$ displaced muon pairs with minimal $p_T$ cuts. As a result, CMS can be competitive with LHCb when searching for low mass displaced exotics originating from heavy flavor decays. The method can also be applied to signatures without muons but with a moderate amount of MET, $H_T$ or multiple displaced vertices in the event.
Long-lived particles can manifest themselves at the LHC via "displaced vertices" - several charged tracks originating from a position separated from the proton interaction point by a macroscopic distance. Here we demonstrate a potential of the muon trackers at the CMS experiment for displaced vertex searches. We use heavy neutral leptons and Chern-Simons portal as two examples of long-lived particles for which the CMS muon tracker can provide essential information about their properties.
We study the LHC discovery potential in the search for heavy neutral leptons (HNL) with a new signature: a displaced shower in the CMS muon detector, giving rise to a large cluster of hits forming a displaced shower. A new Delphes module is used to model the CMS detector response for such displaced decays. We reinterpret a dedicated CMS search for neutral long-lived particles decaying in the CMS muon endcap detectors for the minimal HNL scenario. A cluster of soft displaced tracks corresponds to the dark matter co-annihilation regime. The long-lived regime is, in particular, motivated by the unexplored top partner physics. The background in this regime is extremely challenging to model using a traditional simulation method. We demonstrate the feasibility of handling the formidable background using the CMS Open Data. We perform this analysis to search for compressed and long-lived top partners in the 8 TeV CMS Open Data events with the integrated luminosity of 11.6 fb$^{-1}$ and obtain new limits. The most recent searches for long-lived particles at CMS are presented. Searches for displaced jets, displaced leptons, displaced stops, and heavy stable charged particles are among those discussed. A variety of models are constrained by these searches, ranging from hidden valleys to split supersymmetry.
Design and deployment of a fast neural network for measuring the properties of muons originating from displaced vertices in the CMS Endcap Muon Track Finder
Charm physics has been established at the LHC based on several high-precision measurements. The future of charm physics at the LHC experiments is discussed in detail. The bulk of the charm physics programme will be performed by LHCb and the LHCb upgrade. In particular, the impact of the LHCb upgrade on mixing and \CP violation measurements is presented.
In January 2007 the CERN director general announced the plan for the staged upgrade of the LHC luminosity. The plan foresees a phase 1 upgrade reaching a peak luminosity of $3 \times 10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ followed by phase reaching up to $ 10^{35}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. We discuss the physics potential and the experimental challenges of an upgraded LHC running. The detector R&D needed to operate ATLAS and CMS in a very high radiation environment and the expected detector performance are also discussed.

Selected results of searches for neutral long-lived particles with displaced and delayed jets, trackless jets and emerging jets, as well as displaced muons, obtained with data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations during LHC's Run 2 are presented, as well as challenges and techniques.
The CMS inner pixel detector system is planned to be replaced during the first phase of the LHC luminosity upgrade. The plans foresee an ultra low mass system with four barrel layers and three disks on either end. With the expected increase in particle rates, the electronic readout chain will be changed for fast digital signals. An overview of the envisaged design options for the upgraded CMS pixel detector is given, as well as estimates of the tracking and vertexing performance.
A new pixel detector for the CMS experiment is being built, owing to the instantaneous luminosities anticipated for the Phase I Upgrade of the LHC. The next upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is planned from 2026 when the collider will move to its High Luminosity phase (HL-LHC). Analysis of the CMS data and the simulation prediction based on these results indicate that the performance of the current scintillators in the CMS Hadron Endcap Calorimeter (HE) tiles will degrade dramatically in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) era. In order to continue the physics program in this region, the HE tiles will need to be replaced. The new tiles should have comparable/improved performance, be radiation hard, reliable and robust.
In the upcoming years, with the upgrade of the LHC to higher luminosities, CMS will be subject to an increasing flux of particles, especially in its most forward region, at | η| > 1.6. Triple-GEM detectors for the GE2/1 and ME0 stations of the endcap muon system for the Phase-2 upgrade of the CMS Experiment have been operated in a test beam to measure their efficiency and spatial resolution, together with a high spatial resolution triple- GEM tracker. A production module of GE2/1 detectors and a prototype ME0 detector show excellent local efficiency. A prototype detector with GEM foils employing random hole sectorization showed significant reduction of dead areas. The spatial resolution of the tracker has been measured and found close to the expected value of 75 μm.
As part of the Phase II upgrade program, the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector will incorporate a new timing layer designed to measure minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) with a time resolution of $\sim$30 ps. Precision timing will mitigate the impact of the challenging levels of pileup expected at the High Luminosity LHC. The second LHC long shutdown period (LS2) is an important opportunity for the CMS Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) to complete their consolidation and upgrade projects. The consolidation includes detector maintenance for gas tightness, HV (high voltage), LV (low voltage) and slow control operation. All services for the RPC Phase-2 upgrade, namely RE3/1 and RE4/1, were anticipated for installation to LS2. This paper summarises the RPC system maintenance and upgrade activities.

The CMS Level-1 calorimeter trigger is being upgraded in two stages to maintain performance as the LHC increases pile-up and instantaneous luminosity in its second run. In the first stage, improved algorithms including event-by-event pile-up corrections are used. New algorithms for heavy ion running have also been developed. In the second stage, higher granularity inputs and a time-multiplexed approach allow for improved position and energy resolution. Data processing in both stages of the upgrade is performed with new, Xilinx Virtex-7 based AMC cards.

CMS-HF Calorimeters have been undergoing a major upgrade for the last couple of years to alleviate the problems encountered during Run I, especially in the PMT and the readout systems. In this poster, the problems caused by the old PMTs installed in the detectors and their solutions will be explained. Initially, regular PMTs with thicker windows, causing large Cherenkov radiation, were used.
