We performed systematic AC susceptibility and magnetic moment measurements to investigate the vortex dynamics and pinning in the $EuRbFe_4As_4$ single crystal as a function of temperature, frequency, and DC magnetic field. The vortex solid-liquid line was determined and it fits well with $H(T_p)=H_0(1-t_p)^β$ using $β$=1.74-1.91, for $H\parallel ab$. It indicates a rather high pinning strength of the vortex system. The activation energy $U_0$ was determined from thermally activated flux creep theory and reached 6700 K at low fields, suggesting strong vortex pinning. A field dependence of $U_0(H\parallel ab)\sim H^a$ with $a=0.47$ suggests thermally activated plastic pinning or caused by planar defects. Magnetic moment measurements also confirmed strong pinning in a $EuRbFe_4As_4$ superconductor and the superconducting response gives the main contribution to the $M(H)$ hysteresis. Additionally, we found evidence of long-range magnetic interactions in $Eu^{2+}$ sublattice and the FM-like nature of $Eu^{2+}$ atoms ordering.
We have measured the isothermal field dependence of magnetization of the Mo$_{100-x}$Re$_x$ (15 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 48) alloys, and have estimated the critical current and pinning force density from these measurements. We have performed structural characterization of the above alloys using standard techniques, and analyzed the field dependence of critical current and pinning force density using existing theories. Our results indicate that dislocation networks and point defects like voids and interstitial imperfections are the main flux line pinning centres in the Mo$_{100-x}$Re$_x$ alloys in the i…
Critical current density was measured at 4.2 K for MgB2 strands with and without SiC additions. In some cases measurements were performed on longer (1 m) samples wound on barrels, and these were compared to magnetic measurements. Most measurements were performed on short samples at higher fields (up to 18 T). It was found that in-situ processed strands with 10% SiC additions HT at 700-800C show improved Hr and Fp values as compared to control samples, with Hr increasing by 1.5 T. At 900C even larger improvements are seen, with Hr reaching 18 T and Fp values maximizing at 20 GN/m3.
We have studied the influence of columnar defects, created by heavy-ion (Kr) irradiation with doses up to 6 10^11 Kr-ions/cm2, on the superconducting critical parameters of single crystalline (YxTm1-x)Ba2Cu3O7. Magnetisation measurements in pulsed fields up to 50 T in the temperature range 4.2 - 90 K revealed that: (i) in fields up to T the critical current Jc(H,T) is considerably enhanced and (ii) down to temperatures T ~ 40 K the irreversibility field Hirr(T) is strongly increased. The field range and magnitude of the Jc(H,T) and Hirr(T) enhancement increase with increasing irradiation dose.…
AC magnetic susceptibilities of electron-doped Pr_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4 (PCCO) and Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4 (SCCO) granular thin films have been measured as a function of temperature and magnetic-field strength. Depending on the level of homogeneity of our films, two different types of the irreversibility line (IL) defined as the intergrain-loss peak temperature in the imaginary part of susceptibility have been found. The obtained results are described via the critical-state model taking into account the low-field grain-boundary pinning. The extracted pinning-force densities in more granular SCC…
The magnetic characteristics for superconducting samples of different geometries (plates and films of various widths) and orientation with respect to external field are compared. A similarity is established between the magnetization curves M(H) and the corresponding susceptibilities. A sign reversal is predicted for the 3rd harmonic of the ac susceptibillity when the irreversibility mechanism changes from bulk pinning to edge barrier. A mutual influence of the edge barrier and bulk pinning on the magnetization curves and field-dependent ac susceptibility is studied on the basis of an exactly s…
The model of the Abrikosov vortex pinning on a cylindrical defect is proposed. It is shown that in the limit $\varkappa \gg 1$ the potential for the vortex core excitations can be treated in terms of the zero-range potentials method. Using the variational method the estimates for the energy of pinning, the pinning force and the density of critical current defect are obtained.
The $AC$ magnetic penetration depth $λ(T,H,j)$ was measured in presence of a macroscopic $DC$ (Bean) supercurrent, $j$. In single crystal BSCCO below approximately 28 K, $λ(T,H,j)$ exhibits thermal hysteresis. The irreversibility arises from a shift of the vortex position within its pinning well as $j$ changes. It is demonstrated that below a new irreversibility temperature, the nonequilibrium Campbell length depends upon the ratio $j/j_c$. $λ(T,H,j)$ {\it increases} with $j/j_c$ as expected for a non-parabolic potential well whose curvature {\it decreases} with the displacement. Qualitatively…
We report the synthesis and variation of superconductivity parameters such as transition temperature Tc, upper critical field Hc, critical current density Jc, irreversibility field Hirr and flux pinning parameter (Fp) for the MgB2-xCx system with nano-Carbon doping up to x=0.20. Carbon substitutes successfully on boron site and results in significant enhancement of Hirr and Jc(H). Resistivity measurements reveal a continuous decrease in Tc under zero applied field, while the same improves remarkably at higher fields with an increase in nano-C content for MgB2-xCx system. The irreversibility fi…
We report a study of the pinning properties of Fe/MgB2 tapes performed by means of ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. In particular, the third harmonic response has been measured as a function of the dc magnetic field up to 9 T, at different temperatures, for various frequencies and amplitudes of the ac field. The irreversibility line has been determined using the third harmonic onset criterion for samples made with different ball-milled MgB2 powders. The study of the harmonic response allows us to probe the nature of the vortex pinning and to analyse its influence on the enhancement of …
Evidence of how temperature takes part in the magnetic irreversibility in the intermediate state of a cylinder and various disks of pure type-I superconducting lead is presented. Isothermal measurements of first magnetization curves and magnetic hysteresis cycles are analyzed in a reduced representation that defines an equilibrium state for flux penetration in all the samples and reveals that flux expulsion depends on temperature in the disks but not in the cylinder. The magnetic field at which irreversibility sets in along the descending branch of the hysteresis cycle and the remnant magnetiz…
The elementary vortex pinning potential is studied in a chiral p-wave superconductor with a pairing d=z(k_x + i k_y) on the basis of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. An analytical investigation and numerical results are presented to show that the vortex pinning potential is dependent on whether the vorticity and chirality are parallel or antiparallel. Mutual cancellation of the vorticity and chirality around a vortex is physically crucial to the effect of the pinning center inside the vortex core.
We examine vortex dynamics and pinning in layered superconductors using three-dimensional molecular dyanmics simulations of magnetically interacting pancake vortices. Our model treats the magnetic interactions of the pancakes exactly, with longe-range logarithmic interactions both within and between planes. At the matching field the vortices are aligned with the pinning array. As a function of tilt angle for the pinning arrays a series of commensuration effects occur, seen as peaks in the critical current, due to pancakes finding a favorable alignment.
The vortex patterns stabilized by the square array of artificial pinning sites with a tunable pinning strength are studied by using a phenomenological approach in the London limit. The transitions between pinned and deformed triangular lattices are analyzed as a function of the amplitude of the vortex-pinning site interaction and the characteristic length-scale of this interaction. The critical current and different phases of vortex lattice are studied in presence of external transport current.
As a function of applied field, we find a rich variety of ordered and partially-ordered vortex lattice configurations in systems with square or triangular arrays of pinning sites. We present formulas that predict the matching fields at which commensurate vortex configurations occur and the vortex lattice orientation with respect to the pinning lattice. Our results are in excellent agreement with recent imaging experiments on square pinning arrays [K. Harada et al., Science 274, 1167 (1996)].
The dynamics of vortices in a type-II superconductor with defects are studied by solving the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations in two and three dimensions. We show that vortex flux tubes are trapped by volume defects up to a critical current density where they begin to jump between pinning sites along static flow channels. We study the dependence of the critical current on the pinning distribution and find for random distributions a maximum critical current equal to a few percent of the depairing current at a pinning density three times larger than the vortex line density. Whereas for a…
Sharp increase of pinning force was observed at the 3D-2D phase transition in strongly anisotropic high temperature superconductors of the BiPbSrCaCuO system.
The interaction between a straight vortex line in a superconducting film and a soft magnetic nanodisk in the magnetic vortex state in the presence of a magnetic field applied parallel to the film surfaces is studied theoretically. The superconductor is described by London theory and the nanodisk by the Landau-Lifshitz continuum theory of magnetism, using the approximation known as the rigid vortex model. Pinning of the vortex line by the nanodisk is found to result, predominantly, from the interaction between the vortex line and the changes in the nanodisk magnetization induced by the magnetic…
This paper reports the observation of hysteresis in the vortex pinning in a superconductor / ferromagnetic epitaxial nanocomposite consisting of fcc Gd particles incorporated in a Nb matrix. We show that this hysteretic pinning is associated with magnetic reversal losses in the Gd particles and is fundamentally different in origin to pinning interactions previously observed for ferromagnetic particles or other microstructural features.
Vortex pinning in a type-II superconducting Pb film covering a Co/Pt multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is investigated. Different stable magnetic domain patterns like band and bubble domains can be created in the Co/Pt multilayer, clearly influencing the vortex pinning in the superconducting Pb layer. Most effective pinning is observed for the bubble domain state. We demonstrate that the pinning properties of the superconductor/ferromagnet bilayer can be controlled by tuning the size, density and magnetization direction of the bubbles.
We numerically show that a vortex pinning occurs in superconducting quasicrystal without impurities and defects. This vortex pinning is intrinsic since the superconducting order parameter in quasicrystal is always inhomogeneous due to the lack of the translational symmetry. We propose that experiments influenced by vortex pinning effects can detect the atomic-scale inhomogeneous superconducting order parameter in quasicrystals. We develop a numerical method to solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and gap equations in large systems, which is based on the localized-Krylov subspace and a spar…
We discuss the elementary vortex pinning in type-II superconductors in connection with the Anderson's theorem for nonmagnetic impurities. We address the following two issues. One is an enhancement of the vortex pinning energy in the unconventional superconductors. This enhancement comes from the pair-breaking effect of a nonmagnetic defect as the pinning center far away from the vortex core (i.e., the pair-breaking effect due to the non-applicability of the Anderson's theorem in the unconventional superconductors). The other is an effect of the chirality on the vortex pinning energy in a chira…
We study numerically the effects of temperature on moving vortex lattices interacting with periodic pinning arrays. For low temperatures the vortex lattice flows in channels, forming a hexatic structure with long range transverse and longitudinal ordering. At higher temperatures, a transition to a smectic state occurs where vortices wander between channels and longitudinal order is lost while transverse order remains. At the highest temperatures the vortex lattice melts into an isotropic liquid.
A simulation study using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory is performed for the vortex state in two-component superconductors, such as PrOs_4_Sb_12_. We investigate the flux flow and the pinning of the vortex sheet structure. We find domain wall that traps half flux-quantum vortices and moves with the flux flow. In the pinning case, we observe an emitting process of a conventional vortex from the vortex sheet by combining a pair of half flux-quantum vortices.
Melting of moving vortex lattices in clean superconducting films with periodic pinning is studied by a dynamical "cage" model, based on a mean-field treatment of Langevin's equations for the whole vortex lattice, assuming elastic flow. In the frame moving with the velocity of the vortex lattice center of mass, the model describes forced vibrations of a single vortex tied to a spring. The vortex displacements due to thermal fluctuations and to the periodic pinning force, and the relationship between the driving force and the vortex velocity (V-I curves) are obtained by a perturbation method, va…
The influence of random pinning on the vortex dynamics in a periodic square potential under an external drive is investigated. Using theoretical approach and numerical experiments, we found several dynamical phases of vortex motion that are different from the ones for a regular pinning potential. Vortex transfer is controlled by kinks and antikinks, which either preexist in the system or appear spontaneously in pairs and then propagate in groups. When kinks and antikinks collide, they annihilate.
The effect of a periodic pinning array on the vortex state in a 2D superconductor at low temperatures is studied within the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau approach. It is shown that attractive interaction of vortex cores to a commensurate pin lattice stabilizes vortex solid phases with long range positional order against violent shear fluctuations. Exploiting a simple analytical method, based on the Landau orbitals description, we derive a rather detailed picture of the low temperatures vortex state phase diagram. It is predicted that for sufficiently clean samples application of an artifici…
We report on the systematic evolution of vortex pinning behavior in isovalent doped single crystals of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2. Proceeding from optimal doped to ovedoped samples, we find a clear transfor- mation of the magnetization hysteresis from a fishtail behavior to a distinct peak effect followed by a reversible magnetization and Bean Livingston surface barriers. Strong point pinning dominates the vortex behavior at low fields whereas weak collective pinning determines the behavior at higher fields. In addition to doping effects, we show that particle irradiation by energetic protons can tune vo…
We use local and global magnetometry measurements to study the influence of magnetic domain width w on the domain-induced vortex pinning in superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers, built of a Nb film and a ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, with an insulating layer to eliminate proximity effect. The quasi-periodic domain patterns with different and systematically adjustable width w, as acquired by a special demagnetization procedure, exert tunable vortex pinning on a superconducting layer. The largest enhancement of vortex pinning, by a factor of more than 10…
A vortex line is shaped by a zigzag of pinning centers and we study here how far the stretched vortex line is able to follow this path. The pinning center is described by an insulating sphere of coherence length size such that in its surface the de Gennes boundary condition applies. We calculate the free energy density of this system in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau theory and study the critical displacement beyond which the vortex line is detached from the pinning center.
Using numerical simulations, we observe phase locking, Arnold tongues, and Devil's staircases for vortex lattices driven at varying angles with respect to an underlying superconducting periodic pinning array. This rich structure should be observalble in transport measurments. The transverse $V(I)$ curves have a Devil's staircase structure, with plateaus occurring near the driving angles along symmetry directions of the pinning array. Each of the plateaus corresponds to a different dyanmical phase with a distinctive vortex structure and flow pattern.
Within the Ginzburg-Landau theory we consider Abrikosov vortex pinning on a columnar defect with the characteristic size of the cross-section much smaller than the coherence length. We present an extension of the electrostatic analogies method, which proved to be useful for calculations of the pinning force for large cavities, to the case of small defects. The pinning potential for an elliptic cavity is derived analytically. Also, we determine the depinning current for a circular defect.
The elementary vortex pinning potential is studied in unconventional superconductors within the framework of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. Numerical results are presented for d-, anisotropic s-, and isotropic s-wave superconductors to show explicitly that in unconventional superconductors the vortex pinning potential is determined mainly by the loss of the condensation energy in bulk due to the presence of the pinning center, i.e., by the breakdown of the Anderson's theorem. It is found that the vortex pinning energy in the d-wave pairing case is 4 -- 13 times larger than tho…
By measuring the dynamic and traditional magnetization relaxations we investigate the vortex dynamics of the newly discovered superconductor SmFeAsO_0.9F_0.1 with Tc = 55K. It is found that the relaxation rate is rather large reflecting a small characteristic pinning energy. Moreover it shows a weak temperature dependence in wide temperature region, which resembles the behavior of the cuprate superconductors. Combining with the resistive data under different magnetic fields, a vortex phase diagram is obtained. Our results strongly suggest that the model of collective vortex pinning applies to …
We examine Shapiro steps for vortex lattices interacting with periodic pinning arrays driven by AC and DC currents. The vortex flow occurs by the motion of the interstitial vortices through the periodic potential generated by the vortices that remain pinned at the pinning sites. Shapiro steps are observed for fields B_ϕ < B < 2.25B_ϕ with the most pronouced steps occuring for fields where the interstitial vortex lattice has a high degree of symmetry. The widths of the phase-locked current steps as a function of the magnitude of the AC driving are found to follow a Bessel function in agreement …
We have investigated the vortex dynamics in superconducting thin film devices with non-uniform patterns of artificial pinning centers (APCs). The magneto-transport properties of a conformal crystal and a randomly diluted APC pattern are compared with that of a triangular reference lattice. We have found that in both cases the magneto-resistance below the first matching field of the triangular reference lattice is significantly reduced. For the conformal crystal, the magneto-resistance is below the noise floor indicating highly effective vortex pinning over a wide magnetic field range. Further,…
By scaling isothermal magnetization data measured at different temperatures in the mixed state of high-Tc superconductors, we show that in some cases the sample magnetization, measured in increasing magnetic field below the irreversibility line, is identical with the equilibrium magnetization even in magnetic fields well within the irreversible regime. This surprising behavior can hardly be explained in terms of traditional models of vortex pinning in the bulk of the sample.
In this report, we comprehensively study the effect of H$^+$ irradiation on the critical current density, $J_c$, and vortex pinning in FeSe single crystal. It is found that the value of $J_c$ for FeSe is enhanced more than twice after 3-MeV H$^+$ irradiation. The scaling analyses of the vortex pinning force based on the Dew-Hughes model reveal that the H$^+$ irradiation successfully introduce point pinning centers into the crystal. We also find that the vortex creep rates are strongly suppressed after irradiation. Detailed analyses of the critical current dependent pinning energy based on the …
The critical current and melting temperature of a vortex system are analyzed. Calculations are made for a two dimensional film at finite temperature with two kinds of periodic pinning: hexagonal and Kagomé. A transport current parallel and perpendicular to the main axis of the pinning arrays is applied and molecular dynamics simulations are used to calculate the vortex velocities to obtain the critical currents. The structure factor and displacements of vortices at zero transport current are used to obtain the melting temperature for both pinning arrays. The critical currents are higher for th…
Nanowires of two-dimensional (2D) crystals of type-II superconductor NbSe$_2$ prepared by electron-beam lithography were studied, focusing on the effect of the motion of Abrikosov vortices. We present magnetoresistance measurements on these nanowires and show features related to vortex crossing, trapping, and pinning. The vortex crossing rate was found to vary non-monotonically with the applied field, which results in non-monotonic magnetoresistance variations in agreement with theoretical calculations in the London approximation. Above the lower critical field, $H_{c1}$, the crossing rate is …
We examine the melting of commensurate and incommensurate vortex lattices interacting with square pinning arrays through the use of numerical simulations. For weak pinning strength in the commensurate case we observe an order-order transition from a commensurate square vortex lattice to a triangular floating solid phase as a function of temperature. This floating solid phase melts into a liquid at still higher temperature. For strong pinning there is only a single transition from the square pinned lattice to the liquid state. For strong pinning in the incommensurate case, we observe a multi-st…
We identify a scalable, practical route to fabricating a superconducting diode. The device relies for its function on the barrier to flux vortex entry being reduced at the substrate interface of a superconducting pinning enhanced YBa2Cu3O7-d nano-composite film. We show that these composite systems provide a practical route to fabricating a useful superconducting diode and demonstrate the rectification of an alternating current.
We examine the vortex states in a 2D superconductor interacting with a square array of pinning sites. As a function of pinning size or strength we find a series of novel phases including multi-vortex and composite superlattice states such as aligned dimer and trimer configurations at individual pinning sites. Interactions of the vortices give rise to an orientational ordering of the internal vortex structures in each pinning site. We also show that these vortex states can give rise to a multi-stage melting behavior.
We investigate the pinning and driven dynamics of vortices interacting with twin boundaries using large scale molecular dynamics simulations on samples with near one million pinning sites. For low applied driving forces, the vortex lattice orients itself parallel to the twin boundary and we observe the creation of a flux gradient and vortex free region near the edges of the twin boundary. For increasing drive, we find evidence for several distinct dynamical flow phases which we characterize by the density of defects in the vortex lattice, the microscopic vortex flow patterns, and orientation o…
We constructed a superconducting/ferromagnetic hybrid system in which the ordering of the pinning potential landscape for flux quanta can be manipulated. Flux pinning is induced by an array of magnetic nanodots in the magnetic vortex state, and controlled by the magnetic history. This allows switching on and off the collective pinning of the flux-lattice. In addition, we observed field-induced superconductivity that originates from the annihilation of flux quanta induced by the stray fields from the magnetic vortices.
We use a magnetic force microscope (MFM) to investigate single vortex pinning and penetration depth in NdFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, one of the highest-$T_c$ iron-based superconductors. In fields up to 20 Gauss, we observe a disordered vortex arrangement, implying that the pinning forces are stronger than the vortex-vortex interactions. We measure the typical force to depin a single vortex, $F_{\mathrm{depin}} \simeq 4.5$ pN, corresponding to a critical current up to $J_c \simeq 7 \times 10^5$ A/cm$^2$. Furthermore, our MFM measurements allow the first local and absolute determination of the supercond…
We study theoretically the simultaneous effect of a regular and a random pinning potentials on the vortex lattice structure at filling factor of 1. This structure is determined by a competition between the square symmetry of regular pinning array, by the intervortex interaction favoring a triangular symmetry, and by the randomness trying to depin vortices from their regular positions. Both analytical and molecular-dynamics approaches are used. We construct a phase diagram of the system in the plane of regular and random pinning strengths and determine typical vortex lattice defects appearing i…
A vortex line passes through as many pinning centers as possible on its way from one extremety of the superconductor to the other at the expense of increasing its self-energy. In the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau theory we study the relative growth in length, with respect to the straight line, of a vortex near a zigzag of defects. The defects are insulating pinning spheres that form a three-dimensional cubic array embedded in the superconductor. We determine the depinning transition beyond which the vortex line no longer follows the critical zigzag path of defects.
A vortex line, shaped by a zigzag of pinning centers, is described here through a three-dimensional unit cell containing two pinning centers positioned symmetrically with respect to its center. The unit cell is a cube of side $L=12ξ$, the pinning centers are insulating spheres of radius $R$, taken within the range $0.2ξ$ to $3.0ξ$, $ξ$ being the coherence length. We calculate the free energy density of these systems in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau theory.
A scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscope (SSM) is used to study the magnetic imaging of dynamic motion of quantized interlayer vortices induced by the Lorentz force in anisotropic high-Tc La_(1.87)Sr_(0.13)CuO_4 single crystals. It is found that 3 modes of flux motion switch depending on the transport current. By increasing the current a transition from the creep-like behavior of vortices to a steady flow of vortices was observed. Even higher current induced a continuous expansion of vortex-flow area indicating an inhomogeneous distribution of various pinning c…
We study vortex states and dynamics in 2D superconductors with periodic pinning at fractional sub-matching fields using numerical simulations. For square pinning arrays we show that ordered states form at 1/1, 1/2, and 1/4 filling fractions while only partially ordered states form at other filling fractions, such as 1/3 and 1/5, in agreement with recent imaging experiments. For triangular pinning arrays we observe matching effects at filling fractions of 1/1, 6/7, 2/3, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, and 1/7. For both square and triangular pinning arrays we also find that, for certian sub-matching fillings, vo…
Driven vortex lattices have been studied in a material with strong pinning, such as Nb films. Samples in which natural random pinning coexists with artificial ordered arrays of defects (submicrometric Ni dots) have been fabricated with different geometries (square, triangular and rectangular). Three different dynamic regimes are found: for low vortex velocities, there is a plastic regime in which random defects frustrate the effect of the ordered array; then, for vortex velocities in the range 1-100 m/s, there is a sudden increase in the interaction between the vortex lattice and the ordered d…
The vortex-lattice melting line in three-dimensional type-II superconductors with pinning is derived by equating the free energies of the vortex system in the solid and liquid phases. We account for the elastic and pinning energies and the entropy change that originates from the disappearance of the phonon shear modes in the liquid. The pinning is assumed to be caused by point defects and to be not too strong so that the melting line lies inside the so-called bundle-pinning region. We show that the derived equation for the melting line is equivalent to some Lindemann criterion, which however d…
The interrelation between heterogeneity and flux pinning is studied in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals with widely varying Co-content x. Magnetic Bitter decoration of the superconducting vortex ensemble in crystals with x = 0:075 and x = 0:1 reveal highly disordered vortex structures. The width of the Meissner belt observed at the edges of the crystals, and above the surface steps formed by cleaving, as well as the width of the intervortex distance distribution, indicate that the observed vortex ensemble is established at a temperature just below the critical temperature Tc. The vortex intera…
We have studied vortex pinning and dynamics in a Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconducting tape with critical current density Jc~0.1 MA/cm2 at 4.2 K and 10 T. It is found that grain boundary pinning is dominant in the vortex pinning mechanism. Furthermore, we observe large density of dislocations which can also serve as effective pinning centers. We find that the temperature dependence of critical current density is in agreement with the model of vortices pinned via spatial fluctuation of charge carrier mean free path. Magnetic relaxation measurement indicates that the magnetization depends on time in a…
In a sandwich consisting of two superconducting films, one weakly pinning and one strongly pinning, the vortex positions in both films are determined by the strongly pinning material and the vortex lattice is disordered in both films. We used (strongly pinning) NbN and (weakly pinning) MoGe and studied, by directly imaging the vortex core positions with a scanning tunnelling microscope, how this disorder is restored with increasing thickness of MoGe layer or when the interface is made insulating. For clean interfaces we find that the first reordering of the vortex lattice is found at a layer t…
We report measurements of the field and angular dependences of Jc of truly epitaxial Co-doped BaFe2As2 thin films grown on SrTiO3/(La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3 with different SrTiO3 template thicknesses. The films show Jc comparable to Jc of single crystals and a maximum pinning force Fp(0.6Tc) > 5 GN/m3 at H/Hirr ~ 0.5 indicative of strong vortex pinning effective up to high fields. Due to the strong correlated c-axis pinning, Jc for field along the c-axis exceeds Jc for H//ab plane, inverting the expectation of the Hc2 anisotropy. HRTEM reveals that the strong vortex pinning is due to a high density of n…
We show that a remarkable variety of dynamical phenomena, including switching, polarization, symmetry locking, and dynamically induced pinning, can occur for vortices in type-II superconductors in the presence of a honeycomb pinning array and an ac or combined ac and dc drive. These effects occur at the second matching field where there are two vortices per pinning site, and arise due to the formation of vortex dimer states in the interstitial regions of the honeycomb array. The orientation of the pinned and moving vortex dimers can be controlled externally by the application of a drive. We te…
We analyze the vortex dynamics in superconducting thin films with a periodic array of pinning centers. In particular, we study the effect of anisotropy for a Kagomé pinning network when longitudinal and transverse transport currents are applied. By solving the equations of motion for the vortex array numerically at zero temperature we find different phases for the vortex dynamics depending on the pinning and driving force. An unusual sequence of peaks along and perpendicular to the main hexagonal lattice axes is observed for the differential resistance reflecting the anisotropy of the transpor…
Strong vortex pinning in FeSe could be useful for technological applications and could provide clues about the coexistence of superconductivity and nematicity. To characterize the pinning of individual, isolated vortices, we simultaneously apply a local magnetic field and image the vortex motion with scanning SQUID susceptibility. We find that the pinning is highly anisotropic: the vortices move easily along directions that are parallel to the orientations of twin domain walls and pin strongly in a perpendicular direction. These results are consistent with a scenario in which the anisotropy ar…
