We use a magnetic force microscope (MFM) to investigate single vortex pinning and penetration depth in NdFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, one of the highest-$T_c$ iron-based superconductors. In fields up to 20 Gauss, we observe a disordered vortex arrangement, implying that the pinning forces are stronger than the vortex-vortex interactions. We measure the typical force to depin a single vortex, $F_{\mathrm{depin}} \simeq 4.5$ pN, corresponding to a critical current up to $J_c \simeq 7 \times 10^5$ A/cm$^2$. Furthermore, our MFM measurements allow the first local and absolute determination of the superconducting in-plane penetration depth in NdFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, $λ_{ab}=320 \pm 60$ nm, which is larger than previous bulk measurements.
We report the basal-plane critical current and superfluid density of magnetically aligned NdFeAsO$_{0.86}$F$_{0.14}$ powder. This sample has individual crystallite grains permanently oriented with their c axis along the external field. Magnetic irreversibilities at high field suggest strong flux pinning of basal-plane critical currents, with monotonic field dependence and no evidence of the "fishtail" effect. The small particles provide a sensitive indicator of \textit{dc} flux penetration, and allow analysis of the temperature dependence of $ab-$plane London penetration depth $λ_{ab,\mathrm{L…
Measurements of the in-plane magnetic field penetration depth λ_{ab} in Fe-based superconductors with the nominal composition SmFeAsO_0.85 (T_c\simeq52K) and NdFeAsO_0.85 (T_c\simeq51K) were carried out by means of muon-spin-rotation. The absolute values of λ_{ab} at T=0 were found to be 189(5)nm and 195(5)nm for Sm and Nd substituted samples, respectively. The analysis of the magnetic penetration depth data within the Uemura classification scheme, which considers the correlation between the superconducting transition temperature T_c and the effective Fermi temperature T_F, reveal that both fa…
Single crystals of the oxypnictide superconductors SmFeAsO_(0.8)F_(0.2) and NdFeAsO_(0.8)F_(0.2) with T_c in the range of 44 K to 48 K were investigated by torque magnetometry. An analysis of the data in terms of a recently proposed model for the anisotropic magnetization in the superconducting state, treating the penetration depth anisotropy differently than the upper critical field anisotropy, provides evidence that in the oxypnictide superconductors two distinct anisotropies are present. As a result the penetration depth anisotropy differs significantly in magnitude and in temperature depen…
Type-II superconductors owe their magnetic and transport properties to vortex pinning, the immobilization of flux quanta through material inhomogeneities or defects. Characterizing the potential energy landscape for vortices, the pinning landscape (or short, pinscape), is of great technological importance. Besides measurement of the critical current density $j_c$ and of creep rates $S$, the $ac$ magnetic response provides valuable information on the pinscape which is different from that obtained through $j_c$ or $S$, with the Campbell penetration depth $λ_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle C}$ defining a…
The penetration of an $ac$ magnetic signal into a type II superconductor residing in the Shubnikov phase depends on the pinning properties of Abrikosov vortices. Within a phenomenological theory, the so-called Campbell penetration depth $λ_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle C}$ is determined by the curvature $α$ at the bottom of the effective pinning potential. Preparing the sample into a Bean critical state, this curvature vanishes and the Campbell length formally diverges. We make use of the microscopic expression for the pinning force density derived within strong pinning theory and show how flux pene…
In order to compare magnetic and non-magnetic pinning we have nanostructured two superconducting films with regular arrays of pinning centers: Cu (non-magnetic) dots in one case, and Py (magnetic) dots in the other. For low applied magnetic fields, when all the vortices are pinned in the artificial inclusions, magnetic dots prove to be better pinning centers, as has been generally accepted. Unexpectedly, when the magnetic field is increased and interstitial vortices appear, the results are very different: we show how the stray field generated by the magnetic dots can produce an effective reduc…
Anisotropic superconducting properties including the upper critical field Hc2, thermal activation energy U0, and critical current density Jc are systematically studied in a large Ca1-xLaxFeAs2 single crystal (x ~ 0.18). The obtained Hc2 bears a moderate anisotropy gamma of approximately 2-4.2, located between those of '122' Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (1 < gamma < 2) and '1111' NdFeAsO1-xFx (5 < gamma < 9.2). Both the magnitude of U0 and its field dependence are very similar to those of NdFeAsO1-xFx, also indicating anisotropic superconductivity. Moreover, high and anisotropic Jc's exceeding 10^5 A/cm2 have…
High-quality single crystals of NdFeAsO$_{0.65}$F$_{0.35}$ (the transition temperature $T_{\rm c} \simeq 30.6$~K) were studied in zero-field (ZF) and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) experiments. An upturn in muon-spin depolarization rate at $T\lesssim 3$~K was observed in ZF-$μ$SR measurements and it was associated with the onset of ordering of Nd electronic moments. Measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth ($λ$) were performed in the TF geometry. By applying the external magnetic field $B_{\rm ex}$ parallel to the crystallographic $c$-axis ($B_{\rm ex}\…
The magnetic response of type-II superconductors can be irreversible due to two different reasons: vortex pinning and barriers for flux penetration. Even without bulk pinning and in absence of a microscopic Bean-Lingston surface barrier for vortex penetration, superconductors of nonellipsoidal shape can exhibit a large geometric barrier for flux penetration. This edge barrier and the resulting irreversible magnetization loops and flux-density profiles are computed from continuum electrodynamics for superconductor strips and disks with constant thickness, both without and with bulk pinning. Exp…
Measurements of the first-flux-penetration field in surface-treated and coated Nb: Distinguishing between surface pinning and an interface energy barrier
The recent realisations of hydrogen doped $Ln$FeAsO ($Ln$=Nd and Sm) superconducting epitaxial thin films call for further investigation of their structural and electrical transport properties. Here, we report on the microstructure of a NdFeAs(O,H) epitaxial thin film and its temperature, field, and orientation dependencies of the resistivity and the critical current density $J_{\rm c}$. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ is comparable to NdFeAs(O,F). Transmission electron microscopy investigation supported that hydrogen is homogenously substituted for oxygen. A high self-f…
A true critical current density, $j_{c}$, as opposite to commonly measured relaxed persistent (Bean) current, $j_{B}$, was extracted from the Campbell penetration depth, $λ_{C}(T,H)$ measured in single crystals of LiFeAs. The effective pinning potential is non-parabolic, which follows from the magnetic field - dependent Labusch parameter $α$. At the equilibrium (upon field - cooling), $α(H)$ is non-monotonic, but it is monotonic at a finite gradient of the vortex density. This behavior leads to a faster magnetic relaxation at the lower fields and provides a natural \emph{dynamic} explanation f…
The London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, has been measured in several single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{0.93}$Co$_{0.07}$)$_2$As$_2$. Thermodynamic, electromagnetic, and structural characterization measurements confirm that these crystals are of excellent quality. The observed low temperature variation of $λ(T)$ follows a power-law, $Δλ(T) \sim T^n$ with $n=2.4 \pm 0.1$, indicating the existence of normal quasiparticles down to at least $0.02T_c$. This is in contrast to recent penetration depth measurements on single crystals of NdFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, which indicate an anisotropi…
We performed magnetization measurements in a single crystal of the anisotropic bilayer pnictide superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$, with $T_c$ $\simeq$ 34 K, for $H$$\parallel$$c$-axis and $H$$\parallel$$ab$-planes. A second magnetization peak (SMP) was observed in the isothermal $M(H)$ curves measured below 16 K for $H$$\parallel$$ab$-planes. A peak in the temperature variation of the critical current density, $J_{c}$($T$), at 16 K, strongly suggests the emergence of Josephson vortices at lower temperatures, which leads to the SMP in the sample. In addition, it is noticed that the appear…
We report on angle-resolved magnetization measurements on NdFeAsO$_{0.65}$F$_{0.35}$ (Nd-1111) single crystals. The field dependence of the critical current density, $J_c$, is non-monotonous in these crystals at all orientations and temperatures due to the fishtail effect, which strongly influences the angular dependence of $J_c$. The currents decrease as the field is tilted from the crystallographic c-axis at low fields, but increase at high fields. A peak occurs in the angular dependence of $J_c$ at intermediate fields. The critical currents are significantly enhanced after irradiation with …
The in-plane magnetic penetration depth, $λ_m(T)$, was measured in single crystals of SrPd$_2$Ge$_2$ superconductor in a dilution refrigerator down to T=60 mK and in magnetic fields up to $H_{dc} = 1$ T by using a tunnel diode resonator. The London penetration depth, $λ$, saturates exponentially approaching $T\rightarrow 0$ indicating fully gapped superconductivity. The thermodynamic Rutgers formula was used to estimate $λ(0) = 426$ nm which was used to calculate the superfluid density, $ρ_s(T)=λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)$. Analysis of $ρ_s(T)$ in the full temperature range shows that it is best described b…
We report on a microscopic evaluation of electrodynamic response for the vortex lattice state of a model s-wave superconductor. Our calculation accounts self-consistently for both quasiparticle and order parameter response and establishes the collective nature of linear response in the clean limit. We discuss the effects of homogeneous and inhomogeneous pinning on the optical conductivity and the penetration depth, and comment on the relationship between macroscopic and local penetration depths. We find unexpected relationships between pinning arrangements and conductivity due to the strongly …
Magnetic penetration depth, $λ_{m}$, was measured as a function of temperature and magnetic field in single crystals of low carrier density superconductor YPtBi by using a tunnel-diode oscillator technique. Measurements in zero DC magnetic field yield London penetration depth, $λ_{L}\left(T\right)$, but in the applied field the signal includes the Campbell penetration depth, $λ_{C}\left(T\right)$, which is the characteristic length of the attenuation of small excitation field, $H_{ac}$, into the Abrikosov vortex lattice due to its elasticity. Whereas the magnetic field dependent $λ_C$ exhibit …
Charge doping of iron-pnictide superconductors leads to collective pinning of flux vortices, whereas isovalent doping does not. Moreover, flux pinning in the charge-doped compounds is consistently described by the mean-free path fluctuations introduced by the dopant atoms, allowing for the extraction of the elastic quasiparticle scattering rate. The absence of scattering by dopant atoms in isovalently doped BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ is consistent with the observation of a linear temperature dependence of the low-temperature penetration depth in this material.
We use local and global magnetometry measurements to study the influence of magnetic domain width w on the domain-induced vortex pinning in superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers, built of a Nb film and a ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, with an insulating layer to eliminate proximity effect. The quasi-periodic domain patterns with different and systematically adjustable width w, as acquired by a special demagnetization procedure, exert tunable vortex pinning on a superconducting layer. The largest enhancement of vortex pinning, by a factor of more than 10…
We have measured the surface impedance of thick superconductors in the mixed state over a broad 2 kHz - 20 MHz frequency range. The depinning cross-over is observed; but it is much broader than expected from classical theories of pinning. A striking result is the existence of size effects which invalidate the common interpretation of the low-frequency surface inductance in terms of a single penetration depth. Instead, a two-mode description of vortex dynamics, assuming free vortex flow in the bulk and surface pinning, accounts quantitatively for the spectrum of the complex apparent penetration…
Vortex penetration affects the stability of a superconducting system and limits the possible application of the system. However, the mathematical description to this phenomenon is currently unavailable. Here I present a mathematical model in which I consider the effects of bulk pinning and internal field repulsive force on vortex hopping. Thereafter, I proposed a series expansion to the activation energy and derived a general formula for describing the time dependence of the vortex penetration process. With these formulas, I can analyze the experimental data and calculate the activation energy…
The penetration of transverse magnetic flux into a thin superconducting square film in the flux flow state is considered by numerical simulation. Due to the film self-field, the governing equations are nonlinear, and in combination with the finite viscosity of the moving vortices, this sets up a dynamical barrier for flux penetration into the sample. The corresponding magnetization loop is hysteric, with the peak in magnetization shifted from the zero position. The magnetic field in increasing applied field is found to form a well-defined front of propagation. Numerical estimates shows that th…
The magnetic penetration depth $λ(T,H,j)$ was measured in the presence of a slowly relaxing supercurrent, $j$. In single crystal $\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8}$ below approximately 25 K, $λ(T,H,j)$ is strongly hysteretic. We propose that the irreversibility arises from a shift of the vortex position within its pinning well as $j$ changes. The Campbell length depends upon the ratio $j/j_{c}$ where $j_{c}$ is the critical current defined through the Labusch parameter. Similar effects were observed in other cuprates and in an organic superconductor.
The $AC$ magnetic penetration depth $λ(T,H,j)$ was measured in presence of a macroscopic $DC$ (Bean) supercurrent, $j$. In single crystal BSCCO below approximately 28 K, $λ(T,H,j)$ exhibits thermal hysteresis. The irreversibility arises from a shift of the vortex position within its pinning well as $j$ changes. It is demonstrated that below a new irreversibility temperature, the nonequilibrium Campbell length depends upon the ratio $j/j_c$. $λ(T,H,j)$ {\it increases} with $j/j_c$ as expected for a non-parabolic potential well whose curvature {\it decreases} with the displacement. Qualitatively…
The Abricosov vortex and bundles dynamics was experimentally investigated in Earth's magnetic field range. Isothermal relaxation features in YBCO single crystal samples with strong pinning centers were studied for different sample-field orientation. The normalized relaxation rate S obtained allowed to estimate the effective pinning potential U in the bulk of the YBCO sample and its temperature dependence, as well as the critical current density Jc. A comparison between the data obtained and the results for similar measurements in significantly higher magnetic fields was performed. To compare d…
We report the magnetic field -- temperature ($H-T$) phase diagram of Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_4$As$_8$)[(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$)$_2$As$_2$]$_5$ ($x\approx 0.05$) single crystals, which consists of normal, vortex liquid, plastic creep and elastic creep phases. The upper critical field anisotropy is determined by a radio frequency technique via the measurements of magnetic penetration depth, $λ$. Both, irreversibility line, $H_{irr}(T)$, and flux creep line, $H^{SPM}(T)$, are obtained by measuring the magnetization. We find that $H_{irr}(T)$ is well described by the Lindemann criterion with parameters similar to…
Single crystals of MgCNi$_3$, with areas sized up to 1 mm$^{2}$, were grown by the self flux method using a cubic anvil high pressure technique. The first critical field \textit{H$_{c1}$}, determined from a zero temperature extrapolation, is around 18 mT. Using the tunnel - diode resonator technique, the London penetration depth was measured with no applied \textit{dc} field and the Campbell penetration depth was measured with the external \textit{dc} fields up to 9T for two different sample orientations with respect to the direction of applied magnetic field. The absolute value of the London …
Demanding microwave applications in a magnetic field require the material optimization not only in zero-field but, more important, in the in-field flux motion dominated regime. However, the effect of artificial pinning centers (APC) remains unclear at high frequency. Moreover, in coated conductors the evaluation of the high frequency material properties is difficult due to the complicated electromagnetic problem of a thin superconducting film on a buffered metal substrate. In this paper we present an experimental study at 48 GHz of 150-200 nm YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ coated conductors, with and …
Ground-state properties of a two-dimensional system of superconducting vortices in the presence of a periodic array of strong pinning centers are studied analytically and numerically. The ground states of the vortex system at different filling ratios are found using a simple geometric argument under the assumption that the penetration depth is much smaller than the spacing of the pin lattice. The results of this calculation are confirmed by numerical studies in which simulated annealing is used to locate the ground states of the vortex system. The zero-temperature equilibrium magnetization as …
Previous continuum theory of type-II superconductors of various shapes with and without vortex pinning in an applied magnetic field and with transport current, is generalized to account for a finite London penetration depth lambda. This extension is particularly important at low inductions B, where the transition to the Meissner state is now described correctly, and for films with thickness comparable to or smaller than lambda. The finite width of the surface layer with screening currents and the correct dc and ac responses in various geometries follow naturally from an equation of motion for …
Magnetic flux front and induction contours in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-d films with defect size s ~ l (superconducting coherence length) and s > l are studied by magneto-optical imaging. Robust self-affine spatial correlation was observed using scaling analysis in the small pinning-dominated (s ~ l) disorderd films. The roughness exponent was determined to be ~ 0.66, independent of numbers of defects (or the film thickness). When the disorder landscape also included a distribution of large defects (s >> l), the flux front and induction contours exhibited self-similarity, with a fractal dimens…
We report significant alteration of the equilibrium properties of the superconductor HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ when correlated disorder in the form of randomly oriented columnar tracks is introduced via induced fission of Hg-nuclei. From studies of the equilibrium magnetization $M_{eq}$ and the persistent current density over a wide range of temperatures, applied magnetic fields, and track densities up to a ``matching field'' of 3.4 Tesla, we observe that the addition of more columnar tracks acting as pinning centers is progressively offset by reductions in the magnitude of $M_{eq}$. Invoking …
Application of a tunnel-diode resonator (TDR) technique for studies of the vortex response in magnetic superconductors is described. Operating at very small excitation fields and sufficiently high frequency, TDR was used to probe small-amplitude linear AC response in several types of single crystals where long-range magnetic order coexists with bulk superconductivity. Full local - moment ferromagnetism destroys superconductivity and can coexist with it only in a narrow temperature range ($\sim 0.3$ K). In contrast, weak ferromagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic orders can coexist with bulk su…
We use magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and scanning SQUID susceptometry to measure the local superfluid density $ρ_{s}$ in Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals from 0.4 K to the critical temperature $T_c=18.5$ K. We observe that the penetration depth $λ$ varies about ten times more slowly with temperature than previously published, with a dependence that can be well described by a clean two-band fully gapped model. We demonstrate that MFM can measure the important and hard-to-determine absolute value of $λ$, as well as obtain its temperature dependence and spatial homogeneity. …
We present a local probe study of the magnetic superconductor, ErNi$_2$B$_2$C, using magnetic force microscopy at sub-Kelvin temperatures. ErNi$_2$B$_2$C is an ideal system to explore the effects of concomitant superconductivity and ferromagnetism. At 500 mK, far below the transition to a weakly ferromagnetic state, we directly observe a structured magnetic background on the micrometer scale. We determine spatially resolved absolute values of the magnetic penetration depth $λ$ and study its temperature dependence as the system undergoes magnetic phase transitions from paramagnetic to antiferro…
Vortex penetration and flux relaxation phenomenon carry the information about the pinning ability, and consequently current-carrying ability, of a type-II superconductor. However, the theoretical descriptions to these phenomena are currently limited to the cases with special initial conditions. A generalization to the recently developed infinite series models is presented here. It is shown that one can convert a vortex penetration process with a non-zero initial internal field into a process with a zero initial internal field by introducing some time parameters. Similarly, one can also convert…
We explore the dynamic response of vortex lines in a Pb thin film with a periodic array of antidots by means of ac-susceptibility measurements. For low drive field amplitudes, within the Campbell regime, vortex motion is of intra-valley type and the penetration depth is related to the curvature of the pinning potential well, $α$. For dc-fields below the first matching field $H_1$, $α$ reaches its highest value associated with a Mott Insulator-like phase where vortex lines are strongly localized at the pinning sites. For $H_1<H_{dc}<H_2$, the response is mainly due to the interstitial vortices …
Key questions for any superconductor include: what is its maximum dissipation-free electrical current (its `critical current') and can this be used to extract fundamental thermodynamic parameters? Present models focus on depinning of magnetic vortices and implicate materials engineering to maximise pinning performance. But recently we showed that the self-field critical current for thin films is a universal property, independent of microstructure, controlled only by the penetration depth. Here we generalise this observation to include thin films, wires or nanowires of single- or multi-band s-w…
We extract the vortex lattice parameters using low-frequency two-coil mutual inductance measurements in a 20-nm-thick superconducting a-MoGe thin film. We fit the temperature dependence of ac penetration depth in the mixed state using a model developed by Coffey and Clem and demonstrate a procedure for extracting vortex lattice parameters such as pinning constant, vortex lattice drag coefficient, and pinning potential barrier. We show that the extracted parameters follow the magnetic field variation expected for a weakly pinned 2-dimensional vortex lattice.
We present a comprehensive overview of vortex pinning in single crystals of the isovalently substituted iron-based superconductor BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$, a material that qualifies as an archetypical clean superconductor, containing only sparse strong point-like pins [in the sense of C.J. van der Beek {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 66}, 024523 (2002)]. Widely varying critical current values for nominally similar compositions show that flux pinning is of extrinsic origin. Vortex configurations, imaged using the Bitter decoration method, show less density fluctuations than those pre…
By using a highly sensitive homemade AC magnetic susceptibility technique, the magnetic flux penetration has been measured in YBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystals with giant screw dislocations (having the structure of the Archimedean spirals) exhibiting a=3 spiral turnings, the pitch b=18.7 microns and the step height c=1.2nm (the last parameter is responsible for creation of extended weak-link structure around the giant defects). The magnetic field applied parallel to the surface enters winding around the weak-link regions of the screw in the form of the so-called spiral Josephson fluxons characteriz…
Using differential magneto-optical imaging, we address the question of mesoscopic inhomogeneity in underdoped Bi-2212 single crystals. Among other features, it is shown that an anomalous temperature dependence of the penetration field and of the first order transition (FOT) field of the vortex lattice in such crystals can be understood as arising from inhomogeneity. The effect of chemical inhomogeneity and pinning on flux penetration and the FOT is discussed.
We study the ratchet effect in a narrow pinning-free superconductive ring based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations. Voltage responses to external dc an ac currents at various magnetic fields are studied. Due to asymmetric barriers for flux penetration and flux exit in the ring-shaped superconductor, the critical current above which the flux-flow state is reached, as well as the critical current for the transition to the normal state, are different for the two directions of applied current. These effects cooperatively cause ratchet signal reversal at high magnetic fields, which …
We present the results of from DC magnetization and penetration depth measurements of cylindrical bulk large-grain (LG) and fine-grain (FG) niobium samples used for the fabrication of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities. The surface treatment consisted of electropolishing and low temperature baking as they are typically applied to SRF cavities. The magnetization data were fitted using a modified critical state model. The critical current density Jc and pinning force Fp are calculated from the magnetization data and their temperature dependence and field dependence are presented. The…
Epitaxial niobium-nitride thin films with a critical temperature of Tc=16K and a thickness of 100nm were fabricated on MgO(100) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Low-temperature magnetic force microscopy (MFM) images of the supercurrent vortices were measured after field cooling in a magnetic field of 3mT at various temperatures. Temperature dependence of the penetration depth has been evaluated by a two-dimensional fitting of the vortex profiles in the monopole-monopole model. Its subsequent fit to a single s-wave gap function results in the superconducting gap amplitude Delta(0) = 2.9 m…
In the intermediate mixed state (IMS) of type-II/1 superconductors, vortex lattice (VL) and Meissner state domains coexist due to a partially attractive vortex interaction. Using a neutron-based multiscale approach combined with magnetization measurements, we study the continuous decomposition of a homogeneous VL into increasingly dense domains in the IMS in bulk niobium samples of varying purity. We find a universal temperature dependence of the vortex spacing, closely related to the London penetration depth and independent of the external magnetic field. The rearrangement of vortices occurs …
Interactions between vortices in planar superconducting films and a point magnetic dipole placed outside the film, and the creation of vortices by the dipole, are studied in the London limit. The exact solution of London equations for films of arbritrary thickness with a generic distribution of vortex lines, curved or straight, is obtained by generalizing the results reported by the author and E.H. Brandt (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 61}, 6370 (2000)) for films without the dipole. From this solution the total energy of the vortex-dipole system is obtained as a functional of the vortex distribution. The …
We consider nonlinear dynamics of a single vortex in a superconductor in a strong rf magnetic field $B_0\sinωt$. Using the London theory, we calculate the dissipated power $Q(B_0,ω)$, and the transient time scales of vortex motion for the linear Bardeen-Stephen viscous drag force, which results in unphysically high vortex velocities during vortex penetration through the oscillating surface barrier. It is shown that penetration of a single vortex through the ac surface barrier always involves penetration of an antivortex and the subsequent annihilation of the vortex antivortex pairs. Using the …
In this Chapter we review our latest results on magnetic (AC susceptibility) and transport (resistivity) properties of Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4 (PCCO) and Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4 (SCCO) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. Three main topics of our studies will be covered. We start with a thorough discussion of the pairing symmetry mechanisms in optimally-doped SCCO thin films based on the extracted with high accuracy temperature profiles of penetration depth. In particular, we found that above and below a crossover temperature T*=0.22T_C, our films are best-fitted by a linear and quadratic …
The magnetic vortex lattice (VL) of polycrystalline MgB2 has been investigated by transverse-field muon-spin-relaxation (TF-MuSR). The evolution of TF-MuSR depolarization rate, sigma, that is proportional to the second moment of the field distribution of the VL has been studied as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. The low temperature value s exhibits a pronounced peak near Hext = 75 mT. This behavior is characteristic of strong pinning induced distortions of the VL which put into question the interpretation of the low-field TF-MuSR data in terms of the magnetic penetration …
We use a scanning nanometer-scale superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to image individual vortices in amorphous superconducting MoSi thin films. Spatially resolved measurements of the magnetic field generated by both vortices and Meissner screening satisfy the Pearl model for vortices in thin films and yield values for the Pearl length and bulk penetration depth at 4.2 K. Flux pinning is observed and quantified through measurements of vortex motion driven by both applied currents and thermal activation. The effects of pinning are also observed in metastable vortex configuration…
Infrared spectroscopy has been used to investigate the temperature dependence and c-axis magnetic field dependence of the Josephson plasma resonance in optimally doped Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 thin films, and underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.5 ortho - II single crystals. The resonances are directly related to the c-axis penetration depths, yielding low temperature, zero fields values of about 20 micrometer, and 7 micrometer respectively. While the temperature dependencies of the resonances in the two compounds are very similar, the magnetic field dependence in YBCO is much weaker. We attribute this weak magnetic fie…
The influence of a periodic landscape of pinning sites on the vortex dynamics in Pb thin films is explored by ac-susceptibility measurements. For different amplitudes h of the ac-drive, the ac-susceptibility x=x'+ix'' exhibits a complex field dependence associated with different dynamic regimes. At very low ac-drives where both, multiquanta vortices trapped by the antidots and interstitial vortices oscillate inside the pinning potential (intra-valley motion), a small kink in x'(H) together with a very low dissipation is observed. At intermediate ac-excitations such that vortices in the antidot…
We report the growth and characterization of single crystals of iron chalcogenide superconductor FeCr$_{0.02}$Se. There is an enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature (T$_{\rm c}$) as compared to the T$_{\rm c}$ of the single crystals of the parent compound Fe$_{1+x}$Se by about 25%. The superconducting parameters such as the critical fields, coherence length, penetration depth and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter have been estimated for these single crystals. Analysis of the critical current data suggests a fluctuation in electronic mean free path induced ($δl$) pinning mechanis…
Single crystal of Lu$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$ was studied with the tunnel-diode resonator technique in Meissner and mixed states. Temperature dependence of the superfluid density provides strong evidence for the two-gap superconductivity with almost equal contributions from each gap of magnitudes $Δ_1/k_BT_c=1.86$ and $Δ_1/k_BT_c=0.54$. In the vortex state, pinning strength shows unusually strong temperature dependence and is non-monotonic with the magnetic field (peak effect). The irreversibility line is sharply defined and is quite distant from the $H_{c2}(T)$, which hints on to enhanced vortex fluct…
Transport characteristics of nano-sized superconducting strips and bridges are determined by an intricate interplay of surface and bulk pinning. In the limiting case of a very narrow bridge, the critical current is mostly defined by its surface barrier, while in the opposite case of very wide strips it is dominated by its bulk pinning properties. Here we present a detailed study of the intermediate regime, where the critical current is determined, both, by randomly placed pinning centers and by the Bean-Livingston barrier at the edge of the superconducting strip in an external magnetic field. …
