The Kubo-Greenwood (KG) formula is often used in conjunction with Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory (DFT) to compute the optical conductivity, particularly for warm dense mater. For applying the KG formula, all KS eigenstates and eigenvalues up to an energy cutoff are required and thus the approach becomes expensive, especially for high temperatures and large systems, scaling cubically with both system size and temperature. Here, we develop an approach to calculate the KS conductivity within the stochastic DFT (sDFT) framework, which requires knowledge only of the KS Hamiltonian but not its eigenstates and values. We show that the computational effort associated with the method scales linearly with system size and reduces in proportion to the temperature unlike the cubic increase with traditional deterministic approaches. In addition, we find that the method allows an accurate description of the entire spectrum, including the high-frequency range, unlike the deterministic method which is compelled to introduce a high-frequency cut-off due to memory and computational time constraints. We apply the method to helium-hydrogen mixtures in the warm dense matter regime at temperatures of \sim60\text{kK} and find that the system displays two conductivity phases, where a transition from non-metal to metal occurs when hydrogen atoms constitute \sim0.3 of the total atoms in the system.
A method to analyze optical transitions is developed by combining the Kubo-Greenwood formula with the unfolding method to construct an unfolded electronic band structure with optical transition weights, which allows us to investigate how optical transitions are perturbed by imperfections such as impurity, vacancy, and structural distortions. Based on the Kubo-Greenwood formula, we first calculate frequency-dependent optical conductivity based on the first-principles electronic structure calculations using the linear combinations of atomic orbitals. Benefiting from the atomic orbital basis sets…
Using quantum molecular dynamic simulations, we have studied the thermophysical properties of warm dense carbon monoxide under extreme conditions. The principal Hugoniot, which is derived from the equation of state, shows excellent agreement with available experimental data up to 67 GPa. The chemical decomposition of carbon monoxide has been predicted at 8 GPa by means of pair correlation function. Based on Kubo-Greenwood formula, the dc electrical conductivity and the optical reflectivity are determined, and the nonmetal-metal transition for shock compressed carbon monoxide is observed around…
This paper presents a unified approach to the modeling and computation of the Kubo conductivity of incommensurate bilayer heterostructures at finite temperature. Firstly, we derive an expression for the large-body limit of Kubo-Greenwood conductivity in terms of an integral of the conductivity function with respect to a current-current correlation measure. We then observe that the incommensurate structure can be exploited to decompose the current-current correlation measure into local contribution and deduce an approximation scheme which is exponentially convergent in terms of domain size. We propose a non-perturbative $ab$ $initio$ approach to calculate the electrical conductivity of a liquid metal. Our approach is based on the Kubo formula and the theory of electron-phonon coupling (EPC), and unlike the conventional empirical approach based on the Kubo-Greenwood formula, fully takes into account the effect of coupling between electrons and moving ions. We show that the electrical conductivity at high temperature is determined by an EPC parameter $λ_{\mathrm{tr}}$, which can be inferred, non-perturbatively, from the correlation of electron scattering matrices induced by ions. T…
We have performed quantum molecular dynamic simulations for warm dense polystyrene at high pressures. The principal Hugoniot up to 790 GPa is derived from wide range equation of states, where contributions from atomic ionizations are semiclassically determined. The optical conductivity is calculated via the Kubo-Greenwood formula, from which the dc electrical conductivity and optical reflectivity are determined. The nonmetal-to-metal transition is identified by gradual decomposition of the polymer. Our results show good agreement with recent high precision laser-driven experiments.
We report results on electronic transport properties of liquid Fe-S alloys at conditions of planetary cores, computed by first-principle techniques in the Kubo-Greenwood formalism. We describe a combined effect of resistivity saturation due to temperature, compression, and chemistry by comparing the electron mean free path from the Drude response of optical conductivity to the mean interatomic distance. At high compression and high sulfur concentration the Ioffe-Regel condition is satisfied, and the temperature coefficient of resistivity changes sign from positive to negative. We show that thi…
We study the thermophysical properties of dense helium plasmas by using quantum molecular dynamics and orbital-free molecular dynamics simulations, where densities are considered from 400 to 800 g/cm$^{3}$ and temperatures up to 800 eV. Results are presented for the equation of state. From the Kubo-Greenwood formula, we derive the electrical conductivity and electronic thermal conductivity. In particular, with the increase in temperature, we discuss the change in the Lorenz number, which indicates a transition from strong coupling and degenerate state to moderate coupling and partial degenerac…
We investigate the electronic transport properties of copper-graphene composites using a density-functional framework. Conduction in composites by varying the interface distance of a copper/graphene/copper (Cu/G/Cu) interface models was studied. The electronic density of states reveals increasing contributions from both copper and carbon atoms near the Fermi level with decreasing Cu-G interfacial distance. Electronic conductivity of the models computed using the Kubo-Greenwood formula showed the conductivity increases with decreasing Cu-G distance. We also find that the conductivity saturates …
The Kubo-Greenwood equation, in combination with the first-principles Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Coherent Potential Approximation (KKR-CPA) can be used to calculate the DC residual resistivity of random alloys at T = 0 K. We implemented this method in a multiple scattering theory based ab initio package, MuST, and applied it to the ab initio study of the residual resistivity of the high entropy alloy Al$_x$CoCrFeNi as a function of $x$. The calculated resistivities are compared with experimental data. We also predict the residual resistivity of refractory high entropy alloy MoNbTaV$_x$W. The calcu…
A spin projection scheme is presented which allows the decomposition of the electric conductivity into two different spin channels within fully relativistic $ab$ $initio$ transport calculations that account for the impact of spin-orbit coupling. This is demonstrated by calculations of the spin-resolved conductivity of Fe$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$ and Co$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$ disordered alloys on the basis of the corresponding Kubo-Greenwood equation implemented using the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent potential approximation (KKR-CPA) band structure method. In addition, results for the residual resistivity of di…
A Kubo-Greenwood-like equation for the Gilbert damping parameter $α$ is presented that is based on the linear response formalism. Its implementation using the fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) band structure method in combination with Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) alloy theory allows it to be applied to a wide range of situations. This is demonstrated with results obtained for the bcc alloy system Fe$_x$Co$_{1-x}$ as well as for a series of alloys of permalloy with 5d transition metals. To account for the thermal displacements of atoms as a scattering mechanism, an alloy…
We present an ab initio calculation of the DC conductivity of amorphous silicon and hydrogenated amorphous silicon. The Kubo-Greenwood formula is used to obtain the DC conductivity, by thermal averaging over extended dynamical simulation. Its application to disordered solids is discussed. The conductivity is computed for a wide range of temperatures and doping is explored in a naive way by shifting the Fermi level. We observed the Meyer-Neldel rule for the electrical conductivity with E_MNR = 0.06 eV and a temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR ~ -2.0% K^-1 for a-Si:H. In general, experime…
We have performed first-principles molecular-dynamics simulations based on density-functional theory to study the thermophysical properties of ethane under extreme conditions. We present new results for the equation of state of fluid ethane in the warm dense region. The optical conductivity is calculated via the Kubo-Greenwood formula from which the dc conductivity and optical reflectivity are derived. The close correlation between the nonmetal-metal transition of ethane and its decomposition, that ethane dissociates significantly into molecular and/or atomic hydrogen and some long alkane chai…
Ab-initio dynamical simulation is used to study the liquid Ga-Se system at the three concentrations Ga$_2$Se, GaSe and Ga$_2$Se$_3$ at the temperature 1300~K. The simulations are based on the density functional pseudopotential technique, with the system maintained on the Born-Oppenheimer surface by conjugate gradients minimization. We present results for the partial structure factors and radial distribution functions, which reveal how the liquid structure depends on the composition. Our calculations of the electrical conductivity $σ$ using the Kubo-Greenwood approximation show that $σ$ depends…
We apply a new Kubo-Greenwood type formula combined with a generalized Feynman diagram- matic technique to report a first principles calculation of the thermal transport properties of disordered Fe_{1-x}Cr_{x} alloys. The diagrammatic approach simplifies the inclusion of disorder-induced scattering effects on the two particle correlation functions and hence renormalizes the heat current operator to calculate configuration averaged lattice thermal conductivity and diffusivity. The thermal conductivity K(T) in the present case shows an approximate quadratic T-dependence in the low temperature re…
We report first principle results for nuclear structure and optical responses of high pressure liquid hydrogen along two isotherms in the region of molecular dissociation. We employ Density Functional Theory with the vdW-DF approximation (vdW) and we benchmark the results against existing predictions from Coupling Electron-Ion Monte Carlo (CEIMC). At fixed density and temperature, we find that pressure from vdW is higher than pressure from CEIMC by about 10 GPa in the molecular insulating phase and about 20 GPa in the dissociated metallic phase. Molecules are found to be overstabilized using v…
We present a finite-temperature density functional theory investigation of the nonequilibrium transient electronic structure of warm dense Li, Al, Cu, and Au created by laser excitation. Photons excite electrons either from the inner shell orbitals or from the valence bands according to the photon energy, and give rise to isochoric heating of the sample. Localized states related to the 3d orbital are observed for Cu when the hole lies in the inner shell 3s orbital. The electrical conductivity for these materials at nonequilibrium states is calculated using the Kubo-Greenwood formula. The chang…
This work covers an ab initio calculation of thermodynamic, transport, and optical properties of plastics of the effective composition CH$_2$ at density 0.954 g/cm$^3$ in the temperature range from 5 kK up to 100 kK. The calculation is based on the quantum molecular dynamics, density functional theory and the Kubo-Greenwood formula. The temperature dependence of the static electrical conductivity $σ(T)$ has a step-like shape: $σ(T)$ grows rapidly for 5 kK <= $T$ <= 10 kK and is almost constant for 20 kK <= $T$ <= 60 kK. The additional analysis based on the investigation of the electron density…
We have calculated the equation of states, the viscosity and self-diffusion coefficients, and electronic transport coefficients of beryllium in the warm dense regime for densities from 4.0 to 6.0 g/cm$^{3}$ and temperatures from 1.0 to 10.0 eV by using quantum molecular dynamics simulations. The principal Hugoniot is accordant with underground nuclear explosive and high power laser experimental results up to $\sim$ 20 Mbar. The calculated viscosity and self-diffusion coefficients are compared with the one-component plasma model, using effective charges given by the average-atom model. The Stok…
We present a general formula for the tight-binding representation of momentum matrix elements needed for calculating the conductivity based on the Kubo-Greenwood formula using atomic orbitals, which are in general not orthogonal to other orbitals at different sites. In particular, the position matrix element is demonstrated to be important for delivering the exact momentum matrix element. This general formula, applicable to both orthonormal and non-orthonormal bases, solely needs the information of the position matrix elements and the ingredients that have already contained in the tight-bindin…
This work is devoted to the investigation of transport and optical properties of liquid aluminum in the two-temperature case. At first optical properties, static electrical and thermal conductivities were obtained in the \textit{ab initio} calculation. The \textit{ab initio} calculation is based on the quantum molecular dynamics, density functional theory and the Kubo-Greenwood formula. The semiempirical approximation was constructed based on the results of the \textit{ab initio} caculation. The approximation yields the dependences $σ_{1_\mathrm{DC}}\propto1/T_i^{0.25}$ and $K\propto T_e/T_i^{…
We present an ab initio study of the structural and electronic transport properties of tetrahedrite, Cu$_{12}$Sb$_4$S$_{13}$, in its high-temperature phase. We show how this complex compound can be seen as the outcome of an ordered arrangement of S-vacancies in a semiconducting fematinite-like structure (Cu3SbS4). Our calculations confirm that the S-vacancies are the natural doping mechanism in this thermoelectric compound and reveal a similar local chemical environment around crystallographically inequivalent Cu atoms, shedding light on the debate on XPS measurements in this compound.
