Alfven waves are transverse magneto-hydrodynamic waves resulting from motion of a conducting fluid in direction perpendicular to an applied magnetic field, that propagate along the magnetic field direction. I propose that Alfven-like waves can propagate along normal-superconductor phase boundaries in the presence of a magnetic field. This requires charge flow and backflow across the normal-superconductor phase boundary when the boundary moves, which is predicted by the theory of hole superconductivity but not by the conventional theory of superconductivity. The magnetic field and the domain wall energy provide elasticity, and the normal charge carriers' effective mass provides inertia. It is essential that the normal state charge carriers are holes. I propose an experimental search for Alfven-like waves in superconductors.
We report here an atomic resolution study of the structure and composition of the grain boundaries in polycrystalline Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconductor. A large fraction of grain boundaries contain amorphous layers larger than the coherence length, while some others contain nanometer-scale particles sandwiched in between amorphous layers. We also find that there is significant oxygen enrichment at the grain boundaries. Such results explain the relatively low transport critical current density (Jc) of polycrystalline samples with respect to that of bicrystal films.
Twin boundaries are generic crystalline defects in noncentrosymmetric crystal structures. We study theoretically twin boundaries in time-reversal symmetric noncentrosymmetric superconductors that admit parity-mixed Cooper pairing. Twin boundaries support spin currents as a consequence of this parity mixing. If the singlet and triplet components of the superconducting order parameter are of comparable magnitude, the superconducting state breaks spontaneously the bulk time-reversal symmetry locally near the twin boundary. By self-consistently evaluating the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations and the…
Domains in non-centrosymmetric materials represent regions of different crystal structure and spin-orbit coupling. Twin boundaries separating such domains display unusual properties in non-centrosymmetric superconductors (NCS), where magneto-electric effects influence the local lower and upper critical magnetic fields. As a model system, we investigate NCS with tetragonal crystal structure and Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC), and with twin boundaries parallel to their basal planes. There, we report that there are two types of such twin boundaries which separate domains of opposite RSOC. In a…
Iron-based superconductors have great potential for high-power applications due to their prominent high-field properties. One of the central issues in enhancing the critical current density of iron-based superconducting wires is to reveal the roles and limitations of grain boundaries in supercurrent transport. Here, we finely tuned the electronic properties of grain boundaries by doping Ba1-xKxFe2As2 superconductors in a wide range (0.25<x<0.598). It is found that the intra-grain Jcintra peaks near x~0.287, while the inter-grain Jcinter has a maximum at about x~0.458. Remarkably, the grain bou…
The Fe-based superconductors (FBS) are an important new class of superconducting materials. As with any new superconductor with a high transition temperature and upper critical field, there is a need to establish what their applications potential might be. Applications require high critical current densities, so the usefulness of any new superconductor is determined both by the capability to develop strong vortex pinning and by the absence or ability to overcome any strong current-limiting mechanisms of which grain boundaries in the cuprates are a cautionary example. In this review we first co…
High critical temperature superconductors have zero power consumption and could be used to produce ideal electric power lines. The principal obstacle in fabricating superconducting wires and tapes is grain boundaries-the misalignment of crystalline orientations at grain boundaries, which is unavoidable for polycrystals, largely deteriorates critical current density. Here, we report that High critical temperature iron pnictide superconductors have advantages over cuprates with respect to these grain boundary issues. The transport properties through well-defined bicrystal grain boundary junction…
The magnetization process of a superconductor is determined by the potential barrier for vortex nucleation and escape. In multicomponent superconductors, fractional vortices with a winding in the phase of only one of the components can be stable topological solitons that carry a fraction of the flux quantum. While the formation of such objects in the bulk costs logarithmically or linearly divergent energy, these objects were shown to be stable near samples' boundaries in the two-component London model. Therefore, the conventional Bean-Livingston picture of magnetic flux entry does not apply to…
The interface properties of high-temperature cuprate superconductors have been of interest for many years, and play an essential role in Josephson junctions, superconducting cables, and microwave electronics. In particular, the maximum critical current achievable in high-Tc wires and tapes is well known to be limited by the presence of grain boundaries, regions of mismatch between crystallites with misoriented crystalline axes. In studies of single, artificially fabricated grain boundaries the striking observation has been made that the critical current Jc of a grain boundary junction depends …
It is demonstrated in the (pseudo)spin S=1 formalism that the structure of antiphase domain boundaries in the phase of charge ordering of a mixed-valence system of the Cu1+, 2+, 3+ "triplet" type in cuprates on a two-dimensional square lattice depends to a considerable extent on on-site correlation parameter U. The results of computer modeling on large square lattices illustrate the change in the boundary structure (from a homogeneous monovalent nonconducting structure of the Cu2+ type to a filamentary superconducting one) induced by a relatively small variation of positive U values.
Using the standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory, we revise microscopic derivation of the superconductor-insulator boundary conditions for the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model. We obtain a negative contribution to free energy in the form of surface integral. Boundary conditions for the conventional superconductor have the form $\textbf{n} \cdot \nabla ψ= \text{const} ψ$. These are shown to follow from considering the order parameter reflected in the boundary. The boundary conditions are also derived for more general GL models with higher-order derivatives and pair-density-wave states. It sh…
We present a microscopic study of the behavior of the order parameters near boundaries of a two-band superconducting material, described by the standard tight-binding Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer model. We find superconducting surface states. The relative difference between bulk and surface critical temperatures is a nontrivial function of the interband coupling strength. For superconductors with weak interband coupling, boundaries induce variations of the gaps with the presence of multiple length scales, despite non-zero interband Josephson coupling.
Flux pinning scaling laws were developed to explain the observed increase in the critical current density Jc caused by increased density of grain boundaries in polycrystalline low temperature superconductors (LTS) such as Nb3Sn. For four decades they have provided the framework for the successful development of the LTS materials that carry high Jc in high magnetic fields. However, the discovery of the weak-link problem suggested that transmission of supercurrent flow through the grain boundaries limited Jc in high temperature superconductors (HTS) such as YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO). Here we provide ev…
We use scanning SQUID microscopy to investigate the behavior of vortices in the presence of twin boundaries in the pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. We show that the vortices avoid pinning on twin boundaries. Individual vortices move in a preferential way when manipulated with the SQUID: they tend to not cross a twin boundary, but rather to move parallel to it. This behavior can be explained by the observation of enhanced superfluid density on twin boundaries in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. The observed repulsion from twin boundaries may be a mechanism for enhanced critical currents observed in t…
It was previously suggested that an odd-frequency pair amplitude exists in the vicinity of boundaries in unconventional superconductors. We develop this idea and quest for a novel superconducting order parameter with an odd-frequency dependence. For this purpose, we focus on p-wave superconductors and extend the quasi-classical theory to include the odd-frequency dependence in the order parameter. Both of the frequency and spacial dependences of the order parameter are determined self-consistently. Under a finite electron-phonon interaction, it is found that an odd-frequency order parameter is…
Superconductivity arises in the layered iron-pnictide compounds when magnetic long range order disappears. We use first principles density functional methods to study magnetic arrangements that may compete with long range order near the phase boundary. Specifically, we study the energetics and charge density distribution (through calculation of the electric field gradients) for ordered supercells with varying densities of antiphase magnetic boundaries. We quantify the amount by which Fe atoms with low spin moments at the antiphase boundaries have higher energies than Fe atoms with high spin mo…
We study theoretically a model for twin boundaries in superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, which can be relevant to both three-dimensional noncentrosymmetric tetragonal crystals and two-dimensional gated superconductors such as the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. In both cases, the broken inversion symmetry allows for a coexistence of singlet and triplet pairing. Within the framework of a Ginzburg-Landau theory, we identify two $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetries that are broken via two consecutive second order phase transitions as the temperature is lowered. We show that a time-reversal symm…
We study Read and Green's mean-field model of the spinless $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor [N.Read and D.Green, Phys. Rev. B 61, 10267 (2000)] at a special set of parameters where we find the analytic expressions for the topologically degenerate ground states and the Majorana modes, including in finite systems with edges and in the presence of an arbitrary number of vortices. The wavefunctions of these ground states are similar (but not always identical) to the Moore-Read Pfaffian states proposed for the $ν=5/2$ fractional quantum Hall system, which are interpreted as the p-wave superconducting stat…
Thin films of the iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (Ba122:P) were fabricated on polycrystalline metal-tape substrates with two kinds of in-plane grain boundary alignments (well aligned (4 deg.) and poorly aligned (8 deg.)) by pulsed laser deposition. The poorly aligned substrate is not applicable to cuprate-coated conductors because the in-plane alignment >4 deg. results in exponential decay of the critical current density (Jc). The Ba122:P film exhibited higher Jc at 4 K when grown on the poorly aligned substrate than on the well-aligned substrate even though the crystallinity was po…
We explore the dynamics of driven magnetic flux lines in disordered type-II superconductors in the presence of twin boundaries oriented parallel to the direction of the applied magnetic field, using a three-dimensional elastic line model simulated with Langevin molecular dynamics. The lines are driven perpendicular to the planes to model the effect of an electric current applied parallel to the planes and perpendicular to the magnetic field. A study of the long-time non-equilibrium steady states for varying sample orientation and thickness reveals a rich collection of dynamical regimes spannin…
Iron-based superconductors can exhibit different magnetic ground states and are in a critical magnetic region where frustrated magnetic interactions strongly compete with each other. Here we investigate the longitudinal modes of spin fluctuations in an unified effective magnetic model for iron-based superconductors. We focus on the collinear antiferromagnetic phase (CAF) and calculate the behavior of the longitudinal modes when different phase boundaries are approached. The results can help to determine the nature of the magnetic fluctuations in iron-based superconductors.
Edge critical currents of dense Josephson vortex lattice in layered superconductors
In this paper, we report the synthesis, structure, transition temperature, upper critical field, critical current density and thermally activated flux flow in CaFFe0.9Co0.1As superconductor. Superconductivity arises at 23 K by Co substitution at the site of Fe atoms and upper critical field is estimated 102 T by using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula. The flux-flow activation energy (U0/kB) varies from 3230 K and 4190 K in the field of 1 T and 9 T respectively. At 2K, the Jc is found to be approximately 4x10^3A/cm^2 and 0.3x10^3 A/cm&^2 in zero and 6T field, respectively. Transmission e…
We present a study of the basic microscopic model of an $s$-wave superconductor with frustrated interband interaction. When frustration is strong, such an interaction gives raise to a $s+is$ state. This is a $s$-wave superconductor that spontaneously breaks time reversal symmetry. We show that, in addition to the known $s+is$ state, there is additional phase, where the system's bulk is a conventional $s$-wave state, but superconducting surface states break time reversal symmetry. Furthermore, we show that $s+is$ superconductors can have spontaneous boundary currents and spontaneous magnetic fi…
The effects of twin boundaries (TBs) on the complex interaction between magnetism and superconductivity in slightly electron-doped Ba(Ca)(FeAs)$_2$ superconductors are investigated. The spatial distributions of the magnetic, superconducting and charge density orders near two different types of TBs are calculated. We find that TBs corresponding to a 90$^\circ$ lattice rotation in the a-b plane enable magnetic domain walls to form with only a small effective Coulomb interaction between valance electrons, and that superconductivity is enhanced at such TBs. Contrastingly, we find that superconduct…
Phase diagrams play a primary role in the understanding of materials properties. For iron-based superconductors (Fe-SC), the correct definition of their phase diagrams is crucial because of the close interplay between their crystallo-chemical and magnetic properties, on one side, and the possible coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity, on the other. The two most difficult issues for understanding the Fe-SC phase diagrams are: 1) the origin of the structural transformation taking place during cooling and its relationship with magnetism; 2) the correct description of the region where a c…
An electric current generates a magnetic field, and magnetic fields cannot exist in the interior of type I superconductors. As a consequence of these two facts, electric currents can only flow near the surface of a type I superconducting wire so that the self-field vanishes in the interior. Here we examine how an electric current flowing through the entire cross-section of a normal conducting wire becomes a surface current when it enters a superconducting portion of the wire. This geometry provides insight into the dynamics of magnetic flux expulsion that is not apparent in the Meissner effect…
Chiral superconductors support chiral edge modes and potentially spontaneous edge currents at their boundaries. Motivated by the putative multiband chiral p-wave superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we study the influence of the interference between different bands at the edges, which may appear in the presence of moderate edge disorder or in edge tunneling measurements. We show that interband interference can strongly modify the measurable quantities at the edges when the order parameter exhibits phase difference between the bands. This is illustrated by investigating the edge dispersion and the edg…
Solid 4He may acquire superfluid characteristics due to the frustration of the solid phase at grain boundaries. Here, we show that an analogous effect occurs in systems with competition among charge-density-waves (CDWs) and superconductivity in the presence of disorder, as cuprate or dichalcogenide superconductors. The CDWs breaks apart in domains with topologically protected filamentary superconductivity (FSC) at the interfaces. Transport experiments carried out in underdoped cuprates with the magnetic field acting as a control parameter are shown to be in excellent agreement with the theoret…
We investigate the in-field critical current density Jc(B) of SNS Josephson Junctions (JJs) and polycrystalline superconductors with grain boundaries modelled as Josephson type planar defects, both analytically and through computational time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) simulations in 2D and 3D. For very narrow SNS JJs, we derive analytic expressions for Jc(B) that to our knowledge are the first high field solutions for Jc(B) for JJs across the entire field range up to the effective upper critical field. They generalise the well-known (low-field) exponential junction thickness dependence f…
