We measure the deformation of particles made of several slender arms in a two-dimensional (2D) linear shear and a three-dimensional (3D) turbulent flow. We show how these measurements of arm deformations along with the rotation rate of the particle allow us to extract the velocity gradient tensor of the flow. The particles used in the experiments have three symmetric arms in a plane (triads) and are fabricated using 3D printing of a flexible polymeric material. Deformation measurements of a particle free to rotate about a fixed axis in a 2D simple shear flow are used to validate our model relating particle deformations to the fluid strain. We then examine deformable particles in a 3D turbulent flow created by a jet array in a vertical water tunnel. Particle orientations and deformations are measured with high precision using four high speed cameras and have an uncertainty on the order of $10^{-4}$ radians. Measured deformations in 3D turbulence are small and only slightly larger than our orientation measurement uncertainty. Simulation results for triads in turbulence show deformations similar to the experimental observations. Deformable particles offer a promising method for measuring the full local velocity gradient tensor from measurements of a single particle where traditionally a high concentration of tracer particles would be required.
We study the rheology of a suspension of soft deformable droplets subjected to a pressure-driven flow. Through computer simulations, we measure the apparent viscosity as a function of droplet concentration and pressure gradient, and provide evidence of a discontinuous shear thinning behaviour, which occurs at a concentration-dependent value of the forcing. We further show that this response is associated with a nonequilibrium transition between a `hard' (or less deformable) phase, which is nearly jammed and flows very slowly, and a `soft' (or more deformable) phase, which flows much more easil…
We investigate the dynamics of a single deformable self-propelled particle which undergoes a spinning motion in a two-dimensional space. Equations of motion are derived from the symmetry argument for three kinds of variables. One is a vector which represents the velocity of the centre of mass. The second is a traceless symmetric tensor representing deformation. The third is an antisymmetric tensor for spinning degree of freedom. By numerical simulations, we have obtained variety of dynamical states due to interplay between the spinning motion and the deformation. The bifurcations of these dyna…
We study collective dynamics of interacting deformable self-propelled particles whose migration velocity increases when the local density of particles is increased. Numerical simulations in two dimensions reveal that traveling bands similar to those found previously in the Vicsek-type model is easily formed by this local density dependence of the migration velocity. We show that a pair of stripe bands which are traveling to the opposite directions is not destructed by a head-on collision but survives again after collision.
We investigate dynamics of a self-propelled deformable particle under external field in two dimensions based on the model equations for the center of mass and a tensor variable characterizing deformations. We consider two kinds of external force. One is a gravitational-like force which enters additively in the time-evolution equation for the center of mass. The other is an electric-like force supposing that a dipole moment is induced in the particle. This force is added to the equation for the deformation tensor. It is shown that a rich variety of dynamics appears by changing the strength of t…
Liquid crystals with molecules constrained to the tangent bundle of a curved surface show interesting phenomena resulting from the tight coupling of the elastic and bulk free energies of the liquid crystal with geometric properties of the surface. We derive thermodynamically consistent Frank-Oseen-Helfrich and Landau-de Gennes-Helfrich models which consider the simultaneous relaxation of the director/Q-tensor fields and the surface. The resulting systems of vector- or tensor-valued surface partial differential equation and geometric evolution laws are numerically solved to tackle the rich dyna…
Using the Poisson bracket method, we derive continuum equations for a fluid of deformable particles in two dimensions. Particle shape is quantified in terms of two continuum fields: an anisotropy density field that captures the deformations of individual particles from regular shapes and a shape tensor density field that quantifies both particle elongation and nematic alignment of elongated shapes. We explicitly consider the example of a dense biological tissue as described by the Vertex model energy, where cell shape has been proposed as a structural order parameter for a liquid-solid transit…
We investigate the dynamical coupling between the motion and the deformation of a single self-propelled domain based on two different model systems in two dimensions. One is represented by the set of ordinary differential equations for the center of gravity and two tensor variables characterizing deformations. The other is an active cell model which has an internal mechanism of motility and is represented by the partial differential equation for deformations. Numerical simulations show a rich variety of dynamics, some of which are common to the two model systems. The origin of the similarity a…
The steady flow of three viscoelastic fluids (Oldroyd-B, FENE-P, and Owens model for blood) in a two-dimensional channel, partly bound by a deformable, finite thickness neo-Hookean solid, is computed. The limiting Weissenberg number beyond which computations fail to converge is found to increase with increasing dimensionless solid elasticity parameter Γ, following the trend Owens > FENE- P > Oldroyd-B. The highly shear thinning nature of Owens model leads to the elastic solid always collapsing into the channel, for the wide range of values of Γ considered here. In the case of the FENE-P and Ol…
In this work we investigate the collective behavior of self-propelled particles that deform due to local pairwise interactions. We demonstrate that this deformation alone can induce alignment of the velocity vectors. The onset of collective motion is analyzed. Applying a Gaussian-core repulsion between the particles, we find a transition to disordered non-collective motion under compression. We here explain that this reflects the reentrant fluid behavior of the general Gaussian-core model now applied to a self-propelled system. Truncating the Gaussian potential can lead to cluster crystallizat…
We analyze the isotropic compaction of mixtures composed of rigid and deformable incompressible particles by the non-smooth contact dynamics approach (NSCD). The deformable bodies are simulated using a hyper-elastic neo-Hookean constitutive law by means of classical finite elements. For mixtures that varied from totally rigid to totally deformable particles, we characterize the evolution of the packing fraction, the elastic modulus, and the connectivity as a function of the applied stresses when varying inter-particle coefficient of friction. We show first that the packing fraction increases a…
Dense suspensions of soft colloidal particles display a broad range of physical and rheological properties which are still far from being fully understood. To elucidate the role of deformability on colloidal flow, we employ computer simulations to measure the apparent viscosity of a system of droplets of variable surface tension subjected to a pressure-driven flow. We confirm that our suspension generically undergoes discontinuous shear thinning, and determine the dependence of the onset of the discontinuity on surface tension. We find that the effective viscosity of the suspension is mainly d…
The motion of a deformable active particle in linear shear flow is explored theoretically. Based on symmetry considerations, in two spatial dimensions, we propose coupled nonlinear dynamical equations for the particle position, velocity, deformation, and rotation. In our model, both, passive rotations induced by the shear flow as well as active spinning motions, are taken into account. Our equations reduce to known models in the two limits of vanishing shear flow and vanishing particle deformability. For varied shear rate and particle propulsion speed, we solve the equations numerically and ob…
Modeling the transport of deformable capsules under different flow regimens is crucial in a variety of fields, including oil rheology, blood flow and the dispersion of pollutants. The aim of this study is twofold. Firstly, a combined Lattice Boltzmann-Immersed Boundary (LBM-IB) approach is developed for predicting the transport of inertial deformable capsules. A Moving Least Squares (MLS) scheme has been implemented to correlate the pressure, velocity and force fields of the fluid domain with the capsule dynamics. This computational strategy has been named LBM Dynamic IB. Secondly, this strate…
Growth occurs in a wide range of systems ranging from biological tissue to additive manufacturing. This work considers surface growth, in which mass is added to the boundary of a continuum body from the ambient medium or from within the body. In contrast to bulk growth in the interior, the description of surface growth requires the addition of new continuum particles to the body. This is challenging for standard continuum formulations for solids that are meant for situations with a fixed amount of material. Recent approaches to handle this have used time-evolving reference configurations. In t…
Local stress tensor calculation by the Method-of-Plane in microscopic systems with macroscopic flow: a formulation based on the velocity distribution function
We study the dynamics of asymmetric, deformable particles in oscillatory, linear shear flow. By simulating the motion of a dumbbell, a ring polymer, and a capsule we show that cross-stream migration occurs for asymmetric elastic particles even in linear shear flow if the shear rate varies in time. The migration is generic as it does not depend on the particle dimension. Importantly, the migration velocity and migration direction are robust to variations of the initial particle orientation, making our proposed scheme suitable for sorting particles with asymmetric material properties.
