A geometric torsion (GT) underlying a $2$-form in a $(4$$+$$1)$-dimensional $U(1)$ gauge theory is revisited with a renewed perspective for a non-perturbation (NP) gravity in $d$$=$$4$. In the context we provide evidences to a holographic correspondence between a bulk GT and a boundary NP gravity. Interestingly the Killing symmetries in General Relativity (GR) are shown to provide a subtle clue to the quantum gravity. The NP gravity is shown to incorporate a $(B_{2}$$ \wedge $$F_{2})$ coupling, sourced by a non-Newtonian potential, to an exact geometry in GR. Remarkably the NP correction is identified as a mass dipole and is shown to be sourced by a propagating GT. A detailed analysis is performed in a bulk GT to show a modification to the precession of perihelion in a boundary NP gravity. The perspective of an electromagnetic (EM) wave in the bulk is investigated to reveal a spin $2$ (mass-less) quantum sourced by an apparent 2-form. A Goldstone scalar is absorbed by the apparent 2-form to describe a massive $2$-form in the coulomb gauge. Alternately a Goldstone scalar together with a local degree of GT and 2-form is argued to govern a composite (mass-less) spin $2$ particle in Lorentz gauge. Both the scenarios, further ensure a graviton in a boundary NP gravity. A qualitative analysis reveals a (non-interacting) graviton underlying a plausible gravitational wave/particle duality in NP gravity.
Torsion and nonmetricity are inherent ingredients in modifications of Eintein's gravity that are based on affine spacetime geometries. In the context of pure f(R) gravity we discuss here, in some detail, the relatively unnoticed duality between torsion and nonmetricity. In particular we show that for R2 gravity torsion and nonmetricity are related by projective transformations. Since the latter correspond simply to redefining the affine parameters of autoparallels, we conclude that torsion and nonmetricity are physically equivalent properties of spacetime. As a simple example we show that both…
A number of results for the level-rank duality of $G(N)_K$ $\leftrightarrow$ $G(K)_N$ Chern-Simons theory are summarized, with emphasis on the applications to knot and link invariants. Explicit examples for $SU(2)_K$ $\leftrightarrow$ $SU(K)_2$ illustrate general results. A criterion to distinguish torus knots and links from hyperbolic knots and links, based on tables constructed by Kaul for one and two strand invariants, is presented. Possible symmetries of hyperbolic knot and link invariants are discussed. The level-rank duality of torus knot and link invariants of minimal models is examined
In this short note we analyse T-duality properties of non-relativistic String in Torsional Newton-Cartan Background. We also determine condition that ensures that non-relativistic string maps to non-relativistic string under T-duality.
Liouville field theory approach to 2-dimensional gravity possesses the duality ($b \leftrightarrow b^{-1}$). The matrix counterpart of minimal gravity $\mathcal{M}(q,p)$ ($q<p$ co-prime) is effectively described on $A_{q-1}$ Frobenius manifold, which may exhibit a similar duality $p\leftrightarrow q$, and allow a description on $A_{p-1}$ Frobenius manifold. We have positive results from the bulk one-point and the bulk-boundary two-point correlations on disk that the dual description of the Frobenius manifold works for the unitary series $\mathcal{M}(q, q+1)$. However, for the Lee-Yang series $…
Compton wavelength and Schwarzschild radius are considered here as limiting cases of a unified length scale. Using this length, it is shown that the Dirac equation and the Einstein equations for a point mass are limiting cases of an underlying theory which includes torsion. We show that in this underlying theory the gravitational interaction between small masses is weaker than in Newtonian gravity. We explain as to why the Kerr-Newman black hole and the electron both have the same non-classical gyromagnetic ratio. We propose a duality between curvature and torsion and show that general relativ…
We observe that the ratio of determinants of $2d$ Laplacians which appear in the duality transformation relating two sigma models with abelian isometries can be represented as a torsion of an elliptic (DeRham) complex. As a result, this ratio can be computed exactly and is given by the exponential of a local functional of $2d$ metric and target space metric. In this way the well known dilaton shift under duality is reproduced. We also present the exact computation of the determinant which appears in the duality transformation in the path integral.
We analyse D-branes on orbifolds with discrete torsion, extending earlier results. We analyze certain Abelian orbifolds of the type C^3/ Γ, where Γis given by Z_m x Z_n, for the most general choice of discrete torsion parameter. By comparing with the AdS/CFT correspondence, we can consider different geometries which give rise to the same physics. This identifies new mirror pairs and suggests new dualities at large N. As a by-product we also get a more geometric picture of discrete torsion.
Using U-duality transformations we map perturbative Type IIA string theory compactified on a class of Joyce 7-manifolds to a D-strings on D-manifold description in Type IIB theory. For perturbative Type IIB theory on the same class of Joyce manifolds we use duality transformations to map to an M-theory, M-manifold description, which is an orientifold with fivebrane twisted sectors. D and M-manifold descriptions of discrete torsion are found. For the same class of compactifications we show that Type IIA/IIB theory on a Joyce orbifold without (with) discrete torsion is T-dual to Type IIB/IIA the…
Abelian Chern-Simons gauge theory is known to possess a `$S$-self-dual' action where its coupling constant $k$ is inverted {\it i.e.} $k \leftrightarrow {1 \over k}$. Here a vector non-abelian duality is found in the pure non-abelian Chern-Simons action at the classical level. The dimensional reduction of the dual Chern-Simons action to two-dimensions constitutes a dual Wess-Zumino-Witten action already given in the literature.
From a path integral point of view (e.g. \cite{Q98}) physicists have shown how {\it duality} in antisymmetric quantum field theories on a closed space-time manifold $M$ relies in a fundamental way on Fourier Transformations of formal infinite-dimensional volume measures. We first review these facts from a measure theoretical point of view, setting the importance of the Hodge decomposition theorem in the underlying geometric picture, ignoring the local symmetry which lead to degeneracies of the action. To handle these degeneracies we then apply Schwarz's Ansatz showing how duality leads to a fa…
We study higher symmetries and anomalies of 4d $\mathfrak{so}(2n_c)$ gauge theory with $2n_f$ flavors. We find that they depend on the parity of $n_c$ and $n_f$, the global form of the gauge group, and the discrete theta angle. The contribution from the fermions plays a central role in our analysis. Furthermore, our conclusion applies to $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric cases as well, and we see that higher symmetries and anomalies match across the Intriligator-Seiberg duality between $\mathfrak{so}(2n_c)\leftrightarrow\mathfrak{so}(2n_f-2n_c+4)$.
(0,2) gauged linear sigma models with torsion, corresponding to principal torus bundles over warped CY bases, provide a useful framework for getting exact statements about perturbative dualities in the presence of fluxes. In this context we first study dualities mapping the torus fiber onto itself, implying the existence of quantization constraints on the torus moduli for consistency. Second, we investigate dualities mixing the principal torus bundle with the gauge bundle, relating the torsional GLSMs to ordinary ones corresponding to CY compactifications with non-standard embeddings, namely t…
By addition of non-zero, but torsionless $B$-field, we expand the classification of (non-)Abelian T-duals of the flat background in four dimensions with respect to one-, two-, three-, and four-dimensional subgroups of Poincaré group. We discuss the influence of the additional $B$-field on the process of dualization and identify essential parts of the torsionless $B$-field that cannot be eliminated in general by coordinate or gauge transformation of the dual background. These effects are demonstrated using particular examples. Due to their physical importance, we focus on duals whose metrics re…
We show that for a string moving in a background consisting of maximally symmetric gravity, dilaton field and second rank antisymmetric tensor field, the $O(d) \otimes O(d)$ transformation on the vacuum solutions gives inequivalent solutions that are not maximally symmetric. We then show that the usual physical meaning of maximal symmetry can be made to remain unaltered even if torsion is present and illustrate this through two toy models by determining the torsion fields, the metric and Killing vectors. Finally we show that under the $O(d) \otimes O(d)$ transformation this generalised maximal…
We construct a nonperturbative regularization for Euclidean noncommutative supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with four (N= (2,2)), eight (N= (4,4)) and sixteen (N= (8,8)) supercharges in two dimensions. The construction relies on orbifolds with discrete torsion, which allows noncommuting space dimensions to be generated dynamically from zero dimensional matrix model in the deconstruction limit. We also nonperturbatively prove that the twisted topological sectors of ordinary supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory are equivalent to a noncommutative field theory on the topologically trivial sector wit…
In the present article, we study the local features of the world-sheet in the case when probe bosonic string moves in antisymmetric background field. We generalize the geometry of surfaces embedded in space-time to the case when the torsion is present. We define the mean extrinsic curvature for spaces with Minkowski signature and introduce the concept of mean torsion. Its orthogonal projection defines the dual mean extrinsic curvature. In this language, the field equation is just the equality of mean extrinsic curvature and extrinsic mean torsion, which we call CT-duality. To the world-sheet d…
We present a general discussion of strings propagating on noncompact coset spaces $G/H$ in terms of gauged WZW models, emphasizing the role played by isometries in the existence of target space duality. Fixed points of the gauged transformations induce metric singularities and, in the case of abelian subgroups $H$, become horizons in a dual geometry. We also give a classification of models with a single timelike coordinate together with an explicit list for dimensions $D\leq 10$. We study in detail the class of models described by the cosets $SL(2,\IR)\otimes SO(1,1)^{D-2}/SO(1,1)$. For $D\geq…
We investigate a five-branes interpretation of hyper-Kähler geometry with torsion (HKT). This geometry is obtained by conformal transformation of the Taub-NUT space which represents a Kaluza-Klein five-brane. This HKT would represent an NS5-brane on the Taub-NUT space. In order to explore the HKT further, we compactify one transverse direction, and study the $O(2,2;{\mathbb Z}) = SL(2,{\mathbb Z}) \times SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$ monodromy structure associated with two-torus. Performing the conjugate transformation, we obtain a new solution whose physical interpretation is a defect $(p,q)$ five-brane…
It is shown that the T-duality in σ-model with Kaluza-Klein metric, without or with a torsion term, can be interpreted as electric-magnetic duality for some of their solitonic solutions. Actually Buscher's duality transformation interchanges the topological and Noether charges.
We study S-duality transformations that mix the Riemann tensor with the field strength of a 3-form field. The dual of an (A)dS space time - with arbitrary curvature - is seen to be flat Minkowski space time, if the 3-form field has vanishing field strength before the duality transformation. It is discussed whether matter could couple to the dual metric, related to the Riemann tensor after a duality transformation. This possibility is supported by the facts that the Schwarzschild metric can be obtained as a suitable contraction of the dual of a Taub-NUT-AdS metric, and that metrics describing F…
Using a ``Superstrings with Torsion'' type description, we study a class of IIB orientifolds in which spacefilling O5 planes and D5 branes wrap the T^2 fiber in a warped modification of the product of 4D Minkowski space and a T^2 fibration. For the case that the base is T^4, we provide examples that preserve 4D N = 1, 2, and 3 supersymmetry, both with internal RR flux, and with a combination of internal RR and NS flux. In these examples, the internal geometries admit integrable complex structure; however, the almost complex structure selected by the supersymmetry conditions is nonintegrable in…
The equations of motion and boundary conditions for the fluctuations around a classical open string, in a curved space-time with torsion, are considered in compact and world-sheet covariant form. The rigidly rotating open strings in Anti de Sitter space with and without torsion are investigated in detail. By carefully analyzing the tangential fluctuations at the boundary, we show explicitly that the physical fluctuations (which at the boundary are combinations of normal and tangential fluctuations) are finite, even though the world-sheet is singular there. The divergent 2-curvature thus seems …
D-branes on orbifolds with and without discrete torsion are analysed in a unified way using the boundary state formalism. For the example of the Z2 x Z2 orbifold it is found that both the theory with and without discrete torsion possess D-branes whose world-volume carries conventional and projective representations of the orbifold group. The resulting D-brane spectrum is shown to be consistent with T-duality.
We investigate the gauge/gravity duality between the ${\cal N} = 6$ mass-deformed ABJ theory with U$_k(N+l)\times$U$_{-k}(N)$ gauge symmetry and the 11-dimensional supergravity on LLM geometries with SO(2,1)$\times$SO(4)/${\mathbb Z}_k\times$SO(4)/${\mathbb Z}_k$ isometry and the discrete torsion $l$. For chiral primary operators with conformal dimensions $Δ=1,2$, we obtain the exact vacuum expectation values using the holographic method in 11-dimensional supergravity and show that the results depend on the shapes of droplet pictures in LLM geometries. The $\frac{l}{\sqrt{N}}$ contributions fr…
We present a gauge theory of the conformal group in four spacetime dimensions with a non-vanishing torsion. In particular, we allow for a completely antisymmetric torsion, equivalent by Hodge duality to an axial vector whose presence does not spoil the conformal invariance of the theory, in contrast with claims of antecedent literature. The requirement of conformal invariance implies a differential condition (in particular, a Killing equation) on the aforementioned axial vector which leads to a Maxwell-like equation in a four-dimensional curved background. We also give some preliminary results…
We explore higher-form symmetries of M- and F-theory compactified on elliptic fibrations, determined by the topology of their asymptotic boundaries. The underlying geometric structures are shown to be equivalent to known characterizations of the gauge group topology in F-theory via Mordell--Weil torsion and string junctions. We further study dimensional reductions of the 11d Chern--Simons term in the presence of torsional boundary $G_4$-fluxes, which encode background gauge fields of center 1-form symmetries in the lower-dimensional effective gauge theory. We find contributions that can be int…
We study f(R)-gravity with torsion in presence of Dirac massive fields. Using the Bianchi identities, we formulate the conservation laws of the theory and we check the consistency with the matter field equations. Further, we decompose the field equations in torsionless and torsional terms: we show that the non-linearity of the gravitational Lagrangian reduces to the presence of a scalar field that depends on the spinor field; this additional scalar field gives rise to an effective stress-energy tensor and plays the role of a scale factor modifying the normalization of Dirac fields. Problems fo…
Motivated by the universal knot polynomials in the gauge Chern-Simons theory, we show that the values of the second Casimir operator on an arbitrary power of Cartan product of $X_2$ and adjoint representations of simple Lie algebras can be represented in a universal form. We show that it complies with $N\longrightarrow -N$ duality of the same operator for $SO(2n)$ and $Sp(2n)$ algebras (the part of $N\leftrightarrow-N$ duality of gauge $SO(2n)$ and $Sp(2n)$ theories). We discuss the phenomena of non-zero universal values of Casimir operator on zero representations.
We derive a formula for D3-brane charge on a compact spacetime, which includes torsion corrections to the tadpole cancellation condition. We use this to classify D-branes and RR fluxes in type II string theory on RP^3xRP^{2k+1}xS^{6-2k} with torsion H-flux and to demonstrate the conjectured T-duality to S^3xS^{2k+1}xS^{6-2k} with no flux. When k=1, H\neq 0 and so the K-theory that classifies fluxes is twisted. When k=2 the square of the H-flux yields an S-dual Freed-Witten anomaly which is canceled by a D3-brane insertion that ruins the K-theory classification. When k=3 the cube of H is nontri…
By analyzing super-torsion and brane super-cocycles, we derive a new duality in M-theory, which takes the form of a higher version of T-duality in string theory. This involves a new topology change mechanism abelianizing the 3-sphere associated with the C-field topology to the 517-torus associated with exceptional-generalized super-geometry. Finally we explain parity symmetry in M-theory within exceptional-generalized super-spacetime at the same level of spherical T-duality, namely as an isomorphism on 7-twisted cohomology.
We give the classification of T-duals of the flat background in four dimensions with respect to one-, two-, and three-dimensional subgroups of the Poincaré group using non-Abelian T-duality with spectators. As duals we find backgrounds for sigma models in the form of plane-parallel waves or diagonalizable curved metrics often with torsion. Among others, we find exactly solvable time-dependent isotropic pp-wave, singular pp-waves, or generalized plane wave (K-model).
T-duality has been shown to constrain the higher derivative corrections of string theory. We revisit the problem of understanding the T-duality constraints imposed on the $α'$ corrections using the language of a torsionful connection. We find a convenient way to express the $O(d,d)$ invariants in terms of linear combinations of the metric and B-field for general $d$-dimensional torus compactifications, which we then use to revisit the heterotic and bosonic ten-dimensional string action at order $α'$. We also comment on the four-point functions for corrections of order $α'^3$ in the type II str…
The aim of this paper is to make progress in the understanding of the Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction in terms of a compactification in the presence of background fluxes and torsion. From the eleven dimensional supergravity point of view, we find that a general E6(6) S-S phase may be obtained by turning on an appropriate background torsion, together with suitable fluxes, some of which can be directly identified with certain components of the four-form field-strength. Furthermore, we introduce a novel (four dimensional) approach to the study of dualities between flux/torsion compactificati…
A system of gravity coupled to a 2-form gauge field, a dilaton and Yang-Mills fields in $2n$ dimensions arises from the (2,1) sigma model or string. The field equations imply that the curvature with torsion and Yang-Mills field strength are self-dual in four dimensions, or satisfy generalised self-duality equations in $2n$ dimensions. The Born-Infeld-type action describing this system is simplified using an auxiliary metric and shown to be classically Weyl invariant only in four dimensions. A dual form of the action is found (no isometries are required). In four dimensions, the dual geometry i…
A superspace with manifest T-duality including Ramond-Ramond gauge fields is presented. The superspace is defined by the double nondegenerate super-Poincare algebras where Ramond-Ramond charges are introduced by central extension. This formalism allows a simple treatment that all the supergravity multiplets are in a vielbein superfield and all torsions with dimension 1 and less are trivial. A Green-Schwarz superstring action is also presented where the Wess-Zumino term is given in a bilinear form of local currents. Equations of motion are separated into left and right modes in a suitable gauge…
We show that there are two different dualities of two dimensional gauge theories with N=(2,2) supersymmetry. One is basically a consequence of 3d mirror symmetry. The non-linear sigma model with Calabi-Yau target space on the Higgs branch of the gauge theory is mapped into an equivalent non-linear sigma model on the Coulomb branch of the dual theory, realizing a T-dual target space with torsion. The second duality is genuine to two dimensions. In addition to swapping Higgs and Coulomb branch it trades twisted for untwisted multiplets, implying a sign flip of the left moving U(1)_R charge. Succ…
We review the Reidemeister torsion, Ray-Singer's analytic torsion and the Cheeger-M"uller theorem. We describe the analytic torsion of the de Rham complex twisted by a flux form introduced by the current authors and recall its properties. We define a new twisted analytic torsion for the complex of invariant differential forms on the total space of a principal circle bundle twisted by an invariant flux form. We show that when the dimension is even, such a torsion is invariant under certain deformation of the metric and the flux form. Under T-duality which exchanges the topology of the bundle an…
We review the algebraic approach to super non-Abelian T-Duality considered in [1], focusing on symmetric and semi-symmetric coset spaces on $G/H$. We discuss a potential impediment, appearing in these models when integrating out the gauge field in favour of the dual variables. This process cannot be performed in general and we isolate the obstruction, highlighting three cases in which a solution can be found. After writing the T-dual action we provide solution for two specific models. The first based on the symmetric space $S^{3} \simeq SO(4)/SO(3)$, well-known in the literature, the second on…
We summarize an explicit construction of a duality cycle for geometric transitions in type II and heterotic theories. We emphasize that the manifolds with torsion constructed with this duality cycle are crucial for understanding different phenomena appearing in effective field theories.
This paper is concerned with an extension of the well known Kaluza-Klein mechanism. As the standard ansatz for Kaluza-Klein reduction implies the existence of a gauge potential associated with the KK field strength, it follows immediately that this field strength satisfies its Bianchi identity. Hence, the standard KK formalism breaks down in the presence of a violated Bianchi identity. This occurs for example in the context of D6 sources. We will investigate and partially solve this problem in the context of the type IIA/M-theory duality. Our discussion is motivated by the construction of gaug…
Index theorems for the Dirac operator allow one to study spinors on manifolds with boundary and torsion. We analyse the modifications of the boundary Chern-Simons correction and APS eta invariant in the presence of torsion. The bulk contribution must also be modified and is computed using a supersymmetric quantum mechanics representation. Here we find agreement with existing results which employed heat kernel and Pauli-Villars techniques. Nonetheless, this computation also provides a stringent check of the Feynman rules of de Boer et al. for the computation of quantum mechanical path integrals…
This article is based on the author's PhD--thesis. We study geometric transitions on the supergravity level using the basic idea of arXiv:hep-th/0403288, where a pair of non-Kaehler backgrounds was constructed, which are related by a geometric transition. Here we embed this idea into an orientifold setup as suggested in arXiv:hep-th/0511099. The non-Kaehler backgrounds we obtain in type IIA are non-trivially fibered due to their construction from IIB via T-duality with Neveu-Schwarz flux. We demonstrate that these non-Kaehler manifolds are not half-flat and show that a symplectic structure exi…
A general construction of affine Non Abelian (NA) - Toda models in terms of axial and vector gauged two loop WZNW model is discussed. They represent {\it integrable perturbations} of the conformal $σ$-models (with tachyons included) describing (charged) black hole type string backgrounds. We study the {\it off-critical} T-duality between certain families of axial and vector type of integrable models for the case of affine NA- Toda theories with one global U(1) symmetry. In particular we find the Lie algebraic condition defining a subclass of {\it T-selfdual} torsionless NA Toda models and thei…
The curvature-squared model of gravity, in the affine form proposed by Weyl and Yang, is deduced from a topological action in 4D. More specifically, we start from the Pontrjagin (or Euler) invariant. Using the BRST antifield formalism with a double duality gauge fixing, we obtain a consistent quantization in spaces of double dual curvature as classical instanton type background. However, exact vacuum solutions with double duality properties exhibit a `vacuum degeneracy'. By modifying the duality via a scale breaking term, we demonstrate that only Einstein's equations with an induced cosmologic…
Some properties of the non-commutative versions of the sine-Gordon model (NCSG) and the corresponding massive Thirring theories (NCMT) are studied. Our method relies on the NC extension of integrable models and the master Lagrangian approach to deal with dual theories. The master Lagrangians turn out to be the NC versions of the so-called affine Toda model coupled to matter fields (NCATM) associated to the group GL(2), in which the Toda field belongs to certain representations of either $U(1){x} U(1)$ or $U(1)_{C}$ corresponding to the Lechtenfeld et al. (NCSG$_{1}$) or Grisaru-Penati (NCSG$_{…
