We present a semi-analytical model that predicts the excitation of surface-plasmon polaritons (SPP) on a graphene sheet located in front of a sub-wavelength slit drilled in thick metal screen. We identify the signature of the SPP in the transmission, reflection, and absorption curves. Following previous literature on noble-metal plasmonics, we characterize the efficiency of excitation of SPP's in graphene computing a spatial probability density. This quantity shows the presence of plasmonics resonances dispersing with the Fermi energy, $E_F$, as $\sqrt{E_F}$ an unambiguous signature of graphene plasmons.
The peculiar topological properties of Weyl semimetals (WSMs) lead to unusual and unique optical properties. We investigate novel features of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a slot waveguide comprised of two semi-infinite WSMs with different symmetries, one with broken time reversal symmetry (TRS) and the other with broken inversion symmetry. We consider Voigt and Faraday configurations for SPPs at the interface of the WSM with broken TRS. We demonstrate that in the Voigt configuration this structure supports unidirectional SPP modes above the bulk plasmon frequency while it shows a non-r…
In the present paper, the collective near-field effects in a two-graphene sheets plasmonic waveguide loaded with an array of Ag$_2$Se quantum dots excited by external radiation are theoretically studied. This research aims to develop a theoretical approach to realizing controllable excitation and the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in planar graphene waveguides. The proposed model is based on the semiclassical description that implies the dispersion equation's solution for SPPs excited in two coupled graphene sheets and the embedded quantum dots' energy spectra analysis. Using…
Nonlinear plasmonic effects in perspective 2D materials containing low-dimensional quantum emitters can be a basis of a novel technological platform for the fabrication of fast all-plasmonic triggers, transistors, and sensors. This article considers the conditions for achieving a strong plasmon-exciton coupling in the system with quantum nanowire (NW) placed in proximity to the nanostructured graphene sheets. In the condition of strong coupling, nonlinear interaction between two surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) modes propagating along the graphene waveguide integrated with a stub nanoresonator …
In the present work we theoretically investigated the excitation of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) in deformed graphene by attenuated total reflection method. We considered the Otto geometry for SPPs excitation in graphene. Efficiency of SPPs excitation strongly depends on the SPPs propagation direction. The frequency and the incident angle of the most effective excitation of SPPs strongly depend on the polarization of the incident light. Our results may open up the new possibilities for strain-induced molding flow of light at nanoscales.
We study theoretically a problem of nonlinear interaction between two surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) modes propagating along the graphene waveguide integrated with a stub nanoresonator loaded with a core-shell quantum dot (QD). The conditions of strong coupling and very narrowband resonance for Ladder-type SPP-QD interaction in nanoresonator leading to $π$-phase shift of signal SPP mode are established and discussed. Using the full-wave electromagnetic simulation we demonstrate that turning on the pump SPP leads to a transition from destructive to constructive interference in the stub nanores…
Electron transport in a graphene quantum well can be analogous to photon transmission in an optical fiber. In this work, we present a detailed theoretical analysis to study the transport characteristics of graphene waveguides under the influence of different edge orientations. Non-equilibrium Green's function approach in combination with tight-binding Hamiltonian has been utilized to investigate the conductance properties of straight armchair and zigzag oriented graphene waveguides. Conductance plateaus at integer steps of $4e^2/h$ have been observed in both orientations while the zigzag orien…
Plasmonic excitations such as surface-plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) and graphene-plasmons (GPs), carry large momenta and are thus able to confine electromagnetic fields to small dimensions. This property makes them ideal platforms for subwavelength optical control and manipulation at the nanoscale. The momenta of these plasmons are even further increased if a scheme of metal-insulator-metal and graphene-insulator-metal are used for SPPs and GPs, respectively. However, with such large momenta, their far-field excitation becomes challenging. In this work, we consider hybrids of graphene and metallic…
We show analytically that the ability of Dirac materials to localize an electron in both a barrier and a well can be utilized to open a pseudo-gap in graphene's spectrum. By using narrow top-gates as guiding potentials, we demonstrate that graphene bipolar waveguides can create a non-monotonous one-dimensional dispersion along the electron waveguide, whose electrostatically controllable pseudo-band-gap is associated with strong terahertz transitions in a narrow frequency range.
We introduce a new approach that allows one complete control over the modulation of the effective twist angle change in few-layer van der Waals heterostructures by irradiating them with longitudinal waves of light at the end of a waveguide. As a specific application, we consider twisted bilayer graphene and show that one can tune the magic angles to be either larger or smaller, allowing in-situ experimental control of the phase diagram of this and other related materials. A waveguide allows one to circumvent the free-space constraints on the absence of longitudinal electric field components of…
In this paper we review the theory of open quantum systems and macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, providing a self-contained account of many aspects of these two theories. The former is presented in the context of a qubit coupled to a electromagnetic thermal bath, the latter is presented in the context of a quantization scheme for surface-plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in graphene based on Langevin noise currents. This includes a calculation of the dyadic Green's function (in the electrostatic limit) for a Graphene sheet between two semi-infinite linear dieletric media, and its subsequent applica…
We study dc and ac transport along armchair graphene nanoribbons using the ${\bf k\cdot p}$ spectrum and eigenfunctions and general linear-response expressions for the conductivities. Then we contrast the results with those for transport along ordinary waveguides. In all cases we assess the influence of elastic scattering by impurities, describe it quantitatively with a Drude-type contribution to the current previously not reported, and evaluate the corresponding relaxation time for long- and short-range impurity potentials. We show that this contribution dominates the response at very low fre…
A simple yet accurate model for the transmission of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a finite metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide to the sides of the apertures is proposed and demonstrated to be more accurate than available models. It is as simple as using a magnetic current density across the plane of the aperture whose value is defined by SPPs with any number of modes in the waveguide through the equivalence principle. Then, the generated SPPs on the both sides of the aperture are extracted from the convolution integral of the equivalent current density and Green's function. As a resul…
We performed a series of theoretical transport studies on Y-branch electron waveguides which are embedded in mid-size armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs). Non-equilibrium Greens function (NEGF) with different approximations of tight-binding (TB) Hamiltonian has been employed. Using the first nearest hopping approximation, we observed very pronounced conductance quantization, the structure of which depends on geometrical design and shows a spacing of $4e^2/h$, indicating the existence of valley degree of freedom. Moreover, by incorporating the third nearest approximation, we observed seminal …
Dragging of light by moving dielectrics was predicted by Fresnel and verified by Fizeau's celebrated experiments with flowing water. This momentous discovery is among the experimental cornerstones of Einstein's special relativity and is well understood in the context of relativistic kinematics. In contrast, experiments on dragging photons by an electron flow in solids are riddled with inconsistencies and so far eluded agreement with the theory. Here we report on the electron flow dragging surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs): hybrid quasiparticles of infrared photons and electrons in graphene. Th…
Dirac plasmons in graphene hybridize with phonons of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) when the materials are combined in so-called van der Waals heterostructures (vdWh), thus forming surface plasmon-phonon polaritons (SPPPs). The extend to which these modes are coupled depends on the TMD composition and structure, but also on the plasmons' properties. By performing realistic simulations that account for the contribution of each layer of the vdWh separately, we calculate how the strength of plasmon-phonon coupling depends on the number and composition of TMD layers, on the graphene Fermi…
A thermal diode based on the asymmetric radiative heat transfer between nanoparticles assisted by the nonreciprocal graphene plasmons waveguides is proposed in this work. The thermal diode system consists of two particles and a drift-biased suspended graphene sheet in close proximity of them. Nonreciprocal graphene plasmons are induced by the drift currents in the graphene sheet, and then couple to the waves emitted by the particles in near-field regime. Based on the asymmetry with respect to their propagation direction of graphene plasmons, the thermal rectification between the two particles …
We use coupled-mode theory to describe the scattering of a surface-plasmon polariton (SPP) from a square wave grating (Bragg grating) of finite extension written on the surface of either a metal-dielectric interface or a dielectric-dielectric interface covered with a patterned graphene sheet. We find analytical solutions for the reflectance and transmittance of SPP's when only two modes (forward- and back-scattered) are considered. We show that in both cases the reflectance spectrum presents stop-bands where the SPP is completely back-scattered, if the grating is not too shallow. In addition, …
Graphene with its dispersion relation resembling that of photons offers ample opportunities for applications in electron optics. The spacial variation of carrier density by external gates can be used to create electron waveguides, in analogy to optical fiber, with additional confinement of the carriers in bipolar junctions leading to the formation of few transverse guiding modes. We show that waveguides created by gating graphene with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) allow obtaining sharp conductance plateaus, and propose applications in the Aharonov-Bohm and two-path interferometers, and a pointlike s…
We present a graphene photodetector for telecom applications based on a silicon photonic crystal defect waveguide. The photonic structure is used to confine the propagating light in a narrow region in the graphene layer to enhance light-matter interaction. Additionally, it is utilized as split-gate electrode to create a pn-junction in the vicinity of the optical absorption region. The photonic crystal defect waveguide allows for optimal photo-thermoelectric conversion of the occurring temperature profile in graphene into a photovoltage due to additional silicon slabs on both sides of the waveg…
The condition of phase matching prohibits the transfer of excitation from free-space photons to surface plasmon polaritons (SPP). We propose and analyze a scheme that excites an ensemble of emitters in a collective state, which is phase matched with the SPP by the optical pulses used for its preparation. By a collective enhancement the ensemble, hence, emits an SPP in a well defined direction. We demonstrate the scheme by analyzing the launching of near-infrared graphene SPP. Our theory incorporates the dispersive and dissipative properties of the plasmon modes to evaluate the non-Markovian em…
