A multi-phase transport model is used to understand the origin of long-range collective azimuthal correlations in small-system collisions. To disentangle between collectivity associated with initial-state intrinsic momentum anisotropy and the collectivity arising as a final-state response to the collision geometry, we studied the development of collectivity in 5.02 TeV $p$+Pb collisions with both initial-state and final-state effects included. We find that the initial momentum anisotropy may not be fully isotropized through parton interactions, and the final-state partonic collectivity in general are correlated with both the initial momentum anisotropy and the shape of the collision geometry. The initial momentum anisotropy also influences the event by event fluctuation of collective flow. Therefore the mere evidence of geometry response of the collective flow can not rule out the presence of large contributions from the initial state.
In this paper, we investigate the hydrodynamic collectivity in proton--proton (pp) collisions at 13 TeV, using iEBE-VISHNU hybrid model with HIJING initial conditions. With properly tuned parameters, our model simulations can remarkably describe all the measured 2-particle correlations, including integrated and differential elliptic flow coefficients for all charged and identified hadrons ($K_S^0$, $Λ$). However, our model calculations show positive 4-particle cumulant $c_{2}\{4\}$ in high multiplicity pp collisions, and can not reproduce the negative $c_{2}\{4\}$ measured in experiment. Furth…
We present full (3+1)D dynamical simulations to study collective behavior in ultra-peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions (UPC) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with the 3DGlauber+MUSIC+UrQMD framework. By extrapolating from asymmetric p+Pb collisions, we simulate a quasi-real photon $γ^*$ interacting with the Pb nucleus in an ultra-peripheral collision at the LHC, assuming strong final-state effects. We study the elliptic flow hierarchy between p+Pb and $γ^*$+Pb collisions, which is dominated by the difference in longitudinal flow decorrelations. Our theoretical framework provides a quantita…
Observations of long rang azimuthal correlations in small collision systems (p+p/A) have triggered an enormous excitement in the heavy-ion community. However, it is presently unclear to what extent the experimentally observed correlations should be attributed to initial state momentum correlations and/or the final state response to the initial state geometry. We discuss how a consistent theoretical description of the non-equilibrium dynamics is important to address both effects within a unified framework and present first results from weakly coupled non-equilibrium simulations in \cite{Greif:2…
We propose a test-particle method to probe the transport dynamics of the establishment and development of collective flow in large and small systems of heavy-ion collisions. We place test particles as passengers into the partonic medium created by Au$+$Au midcentral collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and $p$ $+$ Pb central collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, using a multiphase transport model. With the help of test particles in two extreme test cases, we demonstrate that parton collisions play an important role in establishing and developing collectivity in large and small colliding…
The observation of multi-particle azimuthal correlations in high-energy small-system collisions has led to intense debate on its origin and the possible coexistence from two competing theoretical scenarios: one based on initial-state intrinsic momentum anisotropy (ISM), and the other based on final-state collective response to the collision geometry (FSM). To complement the previous scan of asymmetric collision systems ($p$+Au, $d$+Au and He+Au), we propose a scan of small symmetric collision systems at RHIC, such as C+C, O+O, Al+Al and Ar+Ar $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=0.2$ TeV, to provide furthe…
We present the first full (3+1)D dynamical simulations of ultra-peripheral Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Extrapolating from p+Pb collisions, we explore whether a quasi-real photon $γ^*$ interacting with the lead nucleus in an ultra-peripheral collision can create a many-body system exhibiting fluid behavior. Assuming strong final-state interactions, we provide model results for charged hadron multiplicity, identified particle mean transverse momenta, and charged hadron anisotropic flow coefficients, and compare them with experimental data from the ALICE and ATLAS collaboration…

Collective flow of the final-state hadrons observed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions or even in smaller systems formed in high-multiplicity pp and p/d/$^3$He-nucleus collisions is one of the most important diagnostic tools to probe the initial state of the system and to shed light on the properties of the short-lived, strongly-interacting many-body state formed in these collisions. Limited, in the initial years, to the study of mainly the directed and elliptic flows -- the first two Fourier harmonics of the single-particle azimuthal distribution -- this field has evolved in recent yea…
The transverse, spatial structure of protons is an area revealing fundamental properties of matter, and provides key input for deeper understanding of emerging collective phenomena in high energy collisions of protons, as well as collisions of heavy ions. In this paper eccentricities and eccentricity fluctuations are predicted using the dipole formulation of BFKL evolution. Furthermore, first steps are taken towards generation of fully exclusive final states of $γ^*$A collisions, by assessing the importance of colour fluctuations in the initial state. Such steps are crucial for the preparation…
New STAR differential and integral v{2,3} measurements that explicitly account for non-flow contributions are reported for p/d/3He+Au, collisions at Roots=200 GeV. The measurements, which leverage the two-particle correlators for p/d/3He+Au and minimum-bias p+p collisions in tandem with three well-established methods of non-flow subtraction, are observed to be method-independent. For comparable multiplicities, they further indicate system-independent v2{2} and v3{2} values that are consistent with the critical role of both size (N{ch}) and the subnucleonic-fluctuations-driven eccentricities e{…
In hadronic collisions, interference between different production channels affects momentum distributions of multi-particle final states. As this QCD interference does not depend on the strong coupling constant, it is part of the no-interaction baseline that needs to be controlled prior to searching for other manifestations of collective dynamics. Here, we introduce a model that is based on the QCD theory of multi-parton interactions and that allows one to study interference effects in the production of $m$ particles in hadronic collisions with $N$ parton-parton interactions ("sources"). In an…
Experimental measurements in collisions of small systems from p+p to p/d/3He+A at RHIC and the LHC reveal particle emission patterns that are strikingly similar to those observed in A+A collisions. One explanation of these patterns is the formation of small droplets of quark-gluon plasma followed by hydrodynamic evolution. A geometry engineering program was proposed [1] to investigate these emission patterns, and the experimental data from that program in p+Au, d+Au, 3He+Au collisions for elliptic and triangular anisotropy coefficients v2 and v3 follow the pattern predicted by hydrodynamic cal…
The mass ordering of $v_{2}^{hadron}$ is regarded as one of the key signatures of collective behaviour in ultra relativistic heavy ion collisions. This observation has been found to be in compliance with the hydrodynamical response of a strongly interacting system to the initial spatial anisotropy. Flow co-efficients measured with identified particles in p-Pb/d-Au collisions have shown similar mass-splitting of $v_{2}^{hadron}$ indicating towards the presence of collective dynamics in small collision systems. Arguably, small size in the overlap geometry of such colliding systems may not be sui…
The particle momentum anisotropy ($v_n$) produced in relativistic nuclear collisions is considered to be a response of the initial geometry or the spatial anisotropy $ε_n$ of the system formed in these collisions. The linear correlation between $ε_n$ and $v_n$ quantifies the efficiency at which the initial spatial eccentricity is converted to final momentum anisotropy in heavy ion collisions. We study the transverse momentum, collision centrality, and beam energy dependence of this correlation for different charged particles using a hydrodynamical model framework. The ($ε_n -v_n$) correlation …
In the framework of a multi-phase transport model, fluctuation and correlation of the azimuthal anisotropies in $^{12}$C+$^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV are explored. Properties of the initial eccentricity and final harmonic flow fluctuation resulted from $^{12}$C+$^{197}$Au collisions with Woods-Saxon configuration and triangular $α$-clustering configurations of $^{12}$C are investigated via scaled variance, skewness and kurtosis. Comparisons are made between results from $α$-clustered configurations and Woods-Saxon configuration. The triangular flow fluctuation is found to…
Multi-particle correlation observables in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider small system scan are computed in a framework that contains both initial state momentum anisotropies from the Color Glass Condensate effective theory and final state hydrodynamic evolution. The initial state is computed using the IP-Glasma model and coupled to viscous relativistic hydrodynamic simulations, which are followed by microscopic hadronic transport. All parameters of the calculation were previously constrained using experimental data on Au+Au collisions at the same center of mass energy. We find that the qu…
We study charmonium production in proton-nucleus ($p$-A) collisions focusing on final-state effects caused by the formation of an expanding medium. Toward this end, we utilize a rate equation approach within a fireball model as previously employed for a wide range of heavy-ion collisions, adapted to the small systems in $p$-A collisions. The initial geometry of the fireball is taken from a Monte-Carlo event generator where initial anisotropies are caused by fluctuations. We calculate the centrality and transverse-momentum dependent nuclear modification factor ($R_{p{\rm A}}$) as well as ellipt…
Probing initial geometrical anisotropy and final azimuthal anisotropy in heavy-ion collisions at Large Hadron Collider energies through event-shape engineering
Motivated by recent interest in collectivity in small systems, we calculate the harmonic flow response to initial geometry deformations within weakly coupled QCD kinetic theory using the first correction to the free-streaming background. We derive a parametric scaling formula that relates harmonic flow in systems of different sizes and different generic initial gluon distributions. We comment on similarities and differences between the full QCD effective kinetic theory and the toy models used previously. Finally we calculate the centrality dependence of the integrated elliptic flow $v_2$ in ox…
We investigate the effect of soft gluon radiations on the azimuthal angle correlation between the total and relative momenta of two jets in inclusive and exclusive dijet processes. We show that the final state effect induces a sizable $\cos(2ϕ)$ anisotropy due to gluon emissions near the jet cones. The phenomenological consequences of this observation are discussed for various collider experiments, including diffractive processes in ultraperipheral $pA$ and $AA$ collisions, inclusive and diffractive dijet production at the EIC, and inclusive dijet in $pp$ and $AA$ collisions at the LHC.
In this proceeding, we present our recent investigations on hydrodynamic collectivity in high-multiplicity proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV using the VISHNU hybrid model with different initial condition models, called HIJING, super-MC and TRENTo. We find that with carefully tuned parameters, hydrodynamic simulations can give reasonable descriptions of the measured two-particle correlations. However, multi-particle single and mixed harmonics cumulants can not be described by hydrodynamics with these three initial conditions, even for the signs in a few cases. Further studies show…
We introduce an efficient general method for calculating the self-energies, collective modes, and dispersion relations of quarks and gluons in a momentum-anisotropic high-temperature quark-gluon plasma. The method introduced is applicable to the most general classes of deformed anisotropic momentum distributions and the resulting self-energies are expressed in terms of a series of hypergeometric basis functions which are valid in the entire complex phase-velocity plane. Comparing to direct numerical integration of the self-energies, the proposed method is orders of magnitude faster and provide…
