We discuss different approaches to photon isolation in fixed-order calculations and present a new next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD calculation of $R_{13/8}^γ$, the ratio of the inclusive isolated photon cross section at 8 TeV and 13 TeV, differential in the photon transverse momentum, which was recently measured by the ATLAS collaboration.
We perform a detailed comparison of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions for the W+jet and Z+jet processes with 7 TeV experimental data from ATLAS and CMS. We observe excellent agreement between theory and data for most studied observables, which span several orders of magnitude in both cross section and energy. For some observables, such as the $H_T$ distribution, the NNLO QCD corrections are essential for resolving existing discrepancies between theory and data.
We present the first calculation of inclusive jet photoproduction with next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) contributions, obtained from a unified threshold resummation formalism. The leading coefficients for direct photoproduction are computed analytically. Together with the coefficients pertinent to parton-parton scattering, they are shown to agree with those appearing in our full next-to-leading order calculations. For hadron-hadron scattering, numerical agreement is found with a previous calculation of jet production at the Tevatron. We show that the direct and resolved NNLO contributions …
In these proceedings, we highlight some aspects of the recent computation of NNLO QCD corrections for W production in association with a charm jet at the LHC. The results are presented in the form of cross sections and differential distributions and are compared to ATLAS data.
We report the first calculation of fully differential jet production in all partonic channels at next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD and compare to the available ATLAS 7 TeV data. We discuss the size and shape of the perturbative corrections along with their associated scale variation across a wide range in jet transverse momentum, $p_{T}$, and rapidity, $y$. We find significant effects, especially at low $p_{T}$, and discuss the possible implications for Parton Distribution Function fits.
We use the recently proposed jettiness-subtraction scheme to provide the complete calculation of Higgs boson production in association with a jet in hadronic collisions through next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. This method exploits the observation that the $N$-jettiness event-shape variable completely describes the singularity structure of QCD when final-state colored particles are present. Our results are in agreement with a recent computation of the $gg$ and $qg$ partonic initial states based on sector-improved residue subtraction. We present phenomenological results for bot…
We present a detailed phenomenological study of W-boson production in association with a jet through next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. Fiducial cross sections and differential distributions for both 8 TeV and 13 TeV LHC collisions are presented, as are results for both the inclusive one-jet bin and the exclusive one-jet bin. Two different event selection criteria are considered: a general selection with standard cuts used in experimental analyses, and a boosted selection that focuses on high transverse momentum jets. We discuss the higher-order corrections in detail and…
We calculate the NNLO QCD corrections to diphoton production with an additional jet at the LHC. Our calculation represents the first NNLO-accurate prediction for the transverse momentum distribution of the diphoton system. The improvement in the accuracy of the theoretical prediction is significant, by a factor of up to four relative to NLO QCD. Our calculation is exact except for the finite remainder of the two-loop amplitude which is included at leading color. The numerical impact of this approximated contribution is small. The results of this work are expected to further our understanding o…
The QCD coupling $α_s$ is extracted from the energy evolution of the first two moments (multiplicity and mean) of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions at low fractional hadron momentum $z$. Comparisons of the experimental $e^+e^-$ and deep-inelastic $e^\pm$p jet data to our NNLO$^*$+NNLL predictions, allow us to obtain $α_s(m_{_{\rm Z}})$ = 0.1205$\pm$0.0010$^{+0.0022}_{-0.0000}$, in excellent agreement with the current world average determined using other methods at the same level of accuracy.
This article gives the perturbative NNLO results for the most commonly used event shape variables associated to three-jet events in electron-positron annihilation: Thrust, heavy jet mass, wide jet broadening, total jet broadening, C parameter and the Durham three-to-two jet transition variable. In addition the NNLO results for the jet rates corresponding to the Durham, Geneva, Jade-E0 and Cambridge jet algorithms are presented.
A first determination of the strong coupling $α_s(m_Z)$ in next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) from inclusive jet and dijet production cross sections in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA is presented. Data collected by the H1 experiment in the years 1995 to 2007 covering the range of momentum transfer $5.5<Q^2<15\,000\,{\rm GeV}^2$ and jet transverse momenta $P_T>4.5\,{\rm GeV}$ are explored. The strong coupling is determined in a fit to inclusive jet and dijet data to $α_s(m_Z)=0.1157\,(6)_{\rm exp}\,(^{+31}_{-26})_{\rm theo}$. Further studies on the phenomenological application of the new N…
We study the production of a W boson in association with a c-jet at the LHC. We calculate, for the first time, the complete set of NNLO QCD corrections to the dominant CKM-diagonal contribution to this process. Both signatures, ${\rm p}{\rm p}\to μ^+ν_μ{\rm j}_{\rm c}$ and ${\rm p}{\rm p}\to μ^-\barν_μ{\rm j}_{\rm c}$ are considered. We present predictions for fiducial cross sections and differential distributions for each one of the two signatures as well as for their ratio. The theoretical predictions are compared with ATLAS measurements at $7 \; {\rm TeV}$. The results of this work are esse…
We investigate the impact of the high precision ATLAS and CMS 7 TeV measurements of inclusive jet production on the MMHT global PDF analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). This is made possible by the recent completion of the long-term project to calculate the NNLO corrections to the hard cross section. We find that a good description of the ATLAS data is not possible with the default treatment of experimental systematic errors, and develop a simplified solution that retains the dominant physical information of the data. We then investigate the fit quality and the impact on the gluon…
The four-lepton decay mode of the Higgs boson allows for a clean kinematic reconstruction, thereby enabling precision studies of the Higgs boson properties and of its production dynamics. We compute the NNLO QCD corrections to fiducial cross sections relevant to this decay mode in the gluon-fusion production of a Higgs boson in association with a hadronic jet, and study the impact of the QCD corrections on the fiducial acceptance factors in inclusive Higgs and Higgs-plus-jet production. We investigate in detail the different definitions used in the ATLAS and CMS measurements to define the fidu…
In this proceedings we compare phenomenological predictions for differential distributions in top-quark pair production at the LHC. In particular we consider NNLO QCD fixed-order predictions and parton-level predictions based on NLO QCD multi-jet merging following the MEPS@NLO scheme. In both predictions NLO electroweak (EW) corrections are incorporated in different approximations. We focus on several transverse-momentum distributions and on the top-quark invariant mass distribution, both highly relevant for the ongoing physics program at the LHC. We discuss comparisons between the different c…
We describe the antenna subtraction method for treating real emission singularities in the calculation of jet observables at NNLO accuracy, in particular in view of the computation $e^+e^- \to 3$ jets at NNLO.
We present the NNLO calculation for single-inclusive jet production in polarized DIS $\vec{e}\vec{p} \rightarrow {\rm jet} +X$. We perform the computation based on the Projection-to-Born method by combining our recent NLO result for di-jet production in polarized DIS along with the NNLO coefficients for the inclusive cross section. In this way, we achieve NNLO accuracy in a fully exclusive way for single-jet observables, the first time for a polarized cross section. We study the perturbative stability and phenomenological consequences of the QCD corrections for Electron Ion Collider kinematics…
I review the state-of-the-art for fully differential numerical NNLO programs. Topics which are covered include the calculation of two-loop amplitudes, multiple polylogarithms, cancellation of infra-red divergences at NNLO and the efficient generation of the phase space. Numerical results for e+ e- --> 2 jets are also discussed.
We consider Higgs boson production through gluon--gluon fusion in hadron collisions, when a veto is applied on the transverse momenta of the accompanying hard jets. We compute the QCD radiative corrections to this process at NLO and NNLO. The NLO calculation is complete. The NNLO calculation uses the recently evaluated NNLO soft and virtual QCD contributions to the inclusive cross section. We find that the jet veto reduces the impact of the NLO and NNLO contributions, the reduction being more sizeable at the LHC than at the Tevatron.
We present a systematic comparison of jet predictions at the LHC and the Tevatron, with accuracy up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). The exact computation at NNLO is completed for the gluons-only channel, so we compare the exact predictions for this channel with an approximate prediction based on threshold resummation, in order to determine the regions where this approximation is reliable at NNLO. The kinematic regions used in this study are identical to the experimental setup used by recently published jet data from the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC, and CDF and D0 experiments …
The strong coupling constant is a fundamental parameter of nature. It can be extracted from experiments measuring three-jet events in electron-positron annihilation. For this extraction precise theoretical calculations for jet rates and event shapes are needed. In this talk I will discuss the NNLO calculation for these observables.
High precision analyses of experimental data for e+ e- annihillation, such as determination of jet rates or event shape observables, call for complete next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) perturbative QCD predictions. In this talk, we discuss the various ingredients entering the calculation of the NNLO corrections in e+ e- annihillation.
This article gives the perturbative NNLO results for the moments of the most commonly used event shape variables associated to three-jet events in electron-positron annihilation: Thrust, heavy jet mass, wide jet broadening, total jet broadening, C parameter and the Durham three-to-two jet transition variable.
We present a subtraction scheme for computing jet cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative QCD. In this second part we deal with the regularization of the real-virtual contribution to the NNLO correction.
We review the status of NNLO calculations for jet cross sections at the LHC. In particular, we describe how perturbative stability and convergence can be used as criteria to select the most appropriate scales in the theoretical description of di-jet and single jet inclusive production.
We describe the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to isolated photon and photon-plus-jet production, and discuss how the experimental hadron-level photon definition and isolation criteria can be approximated in the theoretical parton-level calculation. The NNLO corrections lead to a considerable reduction of the theory uncertainty on the predictions, typically to less than five per cent, and enable an improved description of experimental measurements from ATLAS and CMS.
We present the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) zero-jettiness beam and soft functions, up to the second order in the expansion in the dimensional regularization parameter $ε$. These higher order terms are needed for the computation of the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) zero-jettiness soft and beam functions. As a byproduct, we confirm the $O(ε^0)$ results for NNLO beam and soft functions available in the literature.
We present a systematic investigation of jet production at hadron colliders from a phenomenological point of view, with the dual aim of providing a validation of theoretical calculations and guidance to future determinations of parton distributions (PDFs). We account for all available inclusive jet and dijet production measurements from ATLAS and CMS at 7 and 8 TeV by including them in a global PDF determination, and comparing to theoretical predictions at NNLO QCD supplemented by electroweak (EW) corrections. We assess the compatibility of the PDFs, specifically the gluon, obtained before and…
We present a subtraction scheme for computing jet cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative QCD. In this first part we deal with the regularization of the doubly-real contribution to the NNLO correction.
We give an overview of our calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to W + jet production in hadronic collisions. Phenomenological results for multiple differential distributions are compared to CMS data for 8 TeV proton-proton collisions. We further discuss the application of the calculation to the transverse momentum spectrum of inclusive W boson production, again accompanied by a comparison to 8 TeV CMS data. In both cases, the inclusion of NNLO QCD effects give an improved agreement between theory and data with considerably reduced scale uncertainties with re…
We consider the decay of a neutral Higgs boson of arbitrary CP nature to a massive quark antiquark pair at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. Our analysis is made at the differential level using the antenna subtraction framework. We apply our general set-up to the decays of a CP-even and CP-odd heavy Higgs boson to a top-quark top-antiquark pair and to the decay of the 125 GeV Higgs boson to a massive bottom-quark bottom-antiquark pair. In the latter case we calculate, in particular, the two-jet, three-jet, and four-jet decay rates and, for two-jet events, the energy distributi…
We finish the definition of a subtraction scheme for computing NNLO corrections to QCD jet cross sections. In particular, we perform the integration of the soft-type contributions to the doubly unresolved counterterms via the method of Mellin-Barnes representations. With these final ingredients in place, the definition of the scheme is complete and the computation of fully differential rates for electron-positron annihilation into two and three jets at NNLO accuracy becomes feasible.
In previous articles we outlined a subtraction scheme for regularizing doubly-real emission and real-virtual emission in next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations of jet cross sections in electron-positron annihilation. In order to find the NNLO correction these subtraction terms have to be integrated over the factorized unresolved phase space and combined with the two-loop corrections. In this paper we perform the integration of all one-parton unresolved subtraction terms.
The process e+ e- -> 3 jets offers the opportunity to measure the strong coupling constant. For an accurate determination, precise theoretical calculations are necessary. I will give an overview on the status of the next-to-next-to-leading order calculations.
Precision studies of QCD at $e^+e^-$ colliders are based on measurements of event shapes and jet rates. To match the high experimental accuracy, theoretical predictions to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD are needed for a reliable interpretation of the data. We report the first calculation of NNLO corrections (${\cal O}(α_s^3)$) to three-jet production and related event shapes, and discuss their phenomenological impact.
We present cross section predictions for the isolated diphoton production in next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD using the computational framework MATRIX. Both the integrated and the differential fiducial cross sections are calculated. We found that the arbitrary setup of the isolation procedure introduces uncertainties with a size comparable to the estimation of the theoretical uncertainties obtained with the customary variation of the factorization and renormalization scales. This fact is taken into account in the final result.
We present a preliminary strategy for modeling multidimensional distributions through neural networks. We study the efficiency of the proposed strategy by considering as input data the two-dimensional next-to-next leading order (NNLO) jet k-factors distribution for the ATLAS 7 TeV 2011 data. We then validate the neural network model in terms of interpolation and prediction quality by comparing its results to alternative models.
The production of jets in charged current deep inelastic scattering (CC DIS) constitutes a class of observables that can be used to simultaneously test perturbative predictions for the strong and the electroweak sectors of the Standard Model. We compute both single jet and di-jet production in CC DIS for the first time at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the strong coupling. Our computation is fully differential in the jet and lepton kinematics, and we observe a substantial reduction of scale variation uncertainties in the NNLO predictions compared to next-to-leading order (NLO). Our ca…
We consider the POWHEG generator for a H/W/Z boson plus one jet, augmented with the recently proposed MiNLO method for the choice of scales and the inclusion of Sudakov form factors. Within this framework, the generator covers all the transverse-momentum region of the H/W/Z boson, i.e. no generation cuts are needed to obtain a finite result. By construction, the generator achieves NLO accuracy for distributions involving a finite (and relatively large) transverse momentum of the boson. We examine the conditions under which also the totally inclusive distributions (e.g. the boson rapidity distr…
We discuss next-to-next-to-leading order QCD results for Higgs, W-boson and Z-boson production in association with a jet in hadronic collisions, obtained using the recently developed N-jettiness subtraction method.
Precise predictions for Higgs production via vector-boson fusion play an important role when testing the properties of the Higgs boson and probing new-physics effects. While the inclusive cross section changes little when including NNLO and N3LO QCD corrections, a differential NNLO calculation with typical VBF cuts shows large corrections of up to 10% in distributions. In this article, we investigate the dependence of the differential NNLO QCD calculation on the jet definition. Starting from the known results at a fixed jet clustering choice, we use the electroweak H+3 jets production cross se…
This talk discusses recent results for next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to jet cross sections and transverse momentum distributions. The results are obtained in the NNLOJET code framework, which provides an implementation of the antenna subtraction method for the handling of infrared singular contributions at NNLO. We briefly describe the NNLOJET implementation, with particular emphasis on the construction of the real radiation phase space, which is tailored to ensure stability in all infrared sensitive regions.
We present a novel framework to streamline the calculation of jet and beam functions to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbation theory. By exploiting the infrared behaviour of the collinear splitting functions, we factorise the singularities with suitable phase-space parametrisations and perform the observable-dependent integrations numerically. We have implemented our approach in the publicly available code {\tt pySecDec} and present first results for sample jet and beam functions.
We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to dijet production in the purely gluonic channel retaining the full dependence on the number of colours. The sub-leading colour contribution in this channel first appears at NNLO and, as expected, increases the NNLO correction by around 10% and exhibits a pT dependence, rising from 8% at low pT to 15% at high pT . The present calculation demonstrates the utility of the antenna subtraction method for computing the full colour NNLO corrections to dijet production at the Large Hadron Collider.
We present results for Drell-Yan production from the GENEVA Monte-Carlo framework. We combine the fully-differential NNLO calculation with higher-order resummation in the 0-jettiness resolution variable. The resulting parton-level events are further combined with parton showering and hadronization provided by PYTHIA8. The 0-jettiness resummation is carried out to NNLL', which consistently incorporates all singular virtual and real NNLO corrections. It thus provides a natural perturbative connection between the NNLO calculation and the parton shower regime, including a systematic assessment of …
We discuss the infrared structure of e+e- -> 2 and 3 jets at NNLO in QCD perturbation theory and describe subtraction terms that render the separate parton-level contributions finite. As a first result, we find that the NNLO C_F^2 contribution to the first moment of the Thrust distribution <1-T> = -20.4 +/- 4.
I report on a numerical program, which can be used to calculate any infra-red safe two-jet observable in electron-positron annihilation to next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s. The calculation is based on the subtraction method. The result for the two-jet cross section is compared to the literature.
We perform the calculation of the fully differential single-jet production in longitudinally polarized deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy, featuring both neutral current and charged current processes. The computation is done with the projection-to-Born method (P2B), using the next-to-leading order (NLO) dijet calculation and the NNLO DIS structure functions as its main ingredients. We also analyze its phenomenological consequences in the kinematics of the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).
In the context of a subtraction method for jet cross sections at NNLO accuracy in the strong coupling, we perform the integration over the two-particle factorised phase space of the collinear-type contributions to the doubly unresolved counterterms. We present the final result as a convolution in colour space of the Born cross section and of an insertion operator, which is written in terms of master integrals that we expand in the dimensional regularisation parameter.
We present a detailed phenomenological study of Z-boson production in association with a jet through next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. Fiducial cross sections and differential distributions for both 8 TeV and 13 TeV LHC collisions are presented. We study the impact of different parton distribution functions (PDFs) on predictions for the Z+jet process. Upon inclusion of the NNLO corrections, the residual scale uncertainty is reduced such that both the total rate and the transverse momentum distributions can be used to discriminate between various PDF sets.
We present a calculation of the differential two jet cross section in e^+e^- annihilation through next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s. The calculation is performed using a new method for dealing with real radiation suggested by us recently. For the first time, the two jet event rate is computed directly, without any reference to the inclusive cross-section e^+e^- to hadrons. We also calculate the energy distribution of the leading jet in e^+e^- to 2 jets, and find significant modifications of the shape of this distribution at NNLO.
I report on a numerical program, which can be used to calculate any infrared safe three-jet observable in electron-positron annihilation to next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s. The results are compared to a recent calculation by another group. Numerical differences in three colour factors are discussed and explained.
Effects from a finite top quark mass on the H+n-jet cross section through gluon fusion are studied for $n=0/n\ge 1$ at NNLO/NLO QCD. For this purpose, sub-leading terms in $1/m_t$ are calculated. We show that the asymptotic expansion of the jet-vetoed cross section at NNLO is very well behaved and that the heavy-top approximation is valid at the five permille level up to jet-veto cuts of 300 GeV. For the inclusive Higgs+jet rate, we introduce a matching procedure that allows for a reliable prediction of the top-mass effects using the expansion in $1/m_t$. The quality of the effective field the…
We present results for the Higgsstrahlung process within the GENEVA Monte Carlo framework. We combine the fully differential NNLO calculation with the higher-order resummation in the 0-jettiness resolution variable (beam-thrust). The resulting parton-level events are further showered and hadronised by Pythia8. The beam-thrust resummation is carried out to NNLL$'$ accuracy, which consistently incorporates all singular virtual and real NNLO corrections. It thus provides a natural perturbative connection between the NNLO calculation and the parton shower regime, including a systematic assessment …
We calculate the soft function for the global event variable 1-jettiness at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. We focus specifically on the non-Abelian contribution, which, unlike the Abelian part, is not determined by the next-to-leading order result. The calculation uses the known general forms for the emission of one and two soft partons and is performed using a sector-decomposition method that is spelled out in detail. Results are presented in the form of numerical fits to the 1-jettiness soft function for LHC kinematics (as a function of the angle between the incoming beams and …
