Flare Energy Release at the Magnetic Field Polarity Inversion Line During M1.2 Solar Flare of 2015 March 15. II. Investigation of Photospheric Electric Current and Magnetic Field Variations Using HMI 135-second Vector Magnetograms
This work is a continuation of Paper I [Sharykin et al., 2018] devoted to analysis of nonthermal electron dynamics and plasma heating in the confined M1.2 class solar flare SOL2015-03-15T22:43 revealing energy release in the highly sheared interacting magnetic loops in the low corona, above the polarity inversion line (PIL). The scope of the present work is to make the first extensive quantitative analysis of the photospheric magnetic field and photospheric vertical electric current (PVEC) dynamics in the confined flare region near the PIL using new vector magnetograms obtained with the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) with high temporal resolution of 135 s. Data analysis revealed sharp changes of the magnetic structure and PVEC associated with the flare onset near the PIL. It was found that the strongest plasma heating and electron acceleration were associated with the largest increase of the magnetic reconnection rate, total PVEC and effective PVEC density in the flare ribbons. Observations and non-linear force-free field (NLFFF) extrapolations showed that the magnetic field structure around the PIL is consistent with the tether-cutting magnetic reconnection (TCMR) geometry. We gave qualitative interpretation of the observed dynamics of the flare ribbons, magnetic field and PVEC, and electron acceleration, within the TCMR scenario.
We describe a new data product from the CGEM (Coronal Global Evolutionary Model) collaboration that estimates the Lorentz force in active regions (ARs) based on HMI vector magnetogram patches. Following Fisher et al. (2012), we compute three components of the integrated Lorentz force over the outer solar atmosphere every 12 minutes throughout an AR's disk passage. These estimates, differenced during solar eruptive events, can provide valuable diagnostics on dynamic processes. We describe the pipeline modules, provide data retrieval examples, and document some systematic uncertainties that user…
The solar mean magnetic field (SMMF) provided by the Wilcox Solar Observatory (WSO) is compared with the SMMF acquired by the \textit{Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager} (HMI) onboard the \textit{Solar Dynamic Observatory} (SDO). We found that despite the different spectral lines and measurement techniques used in both instruments the Pearson correlation coefficient between these two datasets equals 0.86 while the conversion factor is very close to unity: B(HMI) = 0.99(2)B(WSO). We also discuss artifacts of the SDO/HMI magnetic field measurements, namely the 12 and 24-hour oscillations in SMMF a…
In this paper, we try to improve the magnetogram calibration method of the Solar Magnetic Field Telescope (SMFT). The improved calibration process fits the observed full Stokes information, using six points on the profile of Fe ı 5324.18 Å line, and the analytical Stokes profiles under the Milne-Eddington atmosphere model, adopting the Levenberg-Marquardt least-square fitting algorithm. In Comparison with the linear calibration methods, which employs one point, there is large difference in the strength of longitudinal field $B_l$ and tranverse field $B_t$, caused by the non-linear relationship…
The solar active region photospheric magnetic field evolves rapidly during major eruptive events, suggesting appreciable feedback from the corona. Previous studies of these "magnetic imprints" are mostly based on line-of-sight only or lower-cadence vector observations; a temporally resolved depiction of the vector field evolution is hitherto lacking. Here, we introduce the high-cadence (90~s or 135~s) vector magnetogram dataset from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) that is well suited for investigating the phenomenon. These observations allow quantitative characterization of the perm…
Since May 1, 2010, we have been able to study (almost) continuously the vector magnetic field in the Sun, thanks to two space-based observatories: the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and Hinode. Both are equipped with instruments able to measure the Stokes parameters of Zeeman-induced polarization of photospheric line radiation. But the observation modes, the spectral lines, the spatial, spectral and temporal sampling, and even the inversion codes used to recover magnetic and thermodynamic information from the Stokes profiles are different. We compare the vector magnetic fields derived from o…
Spectropolarimetric reconstructions of the photospheric vector magnetic field are intrinsically limited by the so-called 180$^\circ$ ambiguity in the orientation of the transverse component. The successful launch and operation of Solar Orbiter has made the removal of the 180$^\circ$ ambiguity possible using solely observations obtained from two different vantage points. While the exploitation of such a possibility is straightforward in principle, it is less so in practice and it is therefore important to assess the accuracy and limitations, as a function of both the satellites orbits and measu…
Towards a live homogeneous database of solar active regions based on SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI synoptic magnetograms. I. Automatic detection and calibration
We present several methods towards construction of precursors, which show great promise towards early predictions, of solar flare events in this paper. A data pre-processing pipeline is built to extract useful data from multiple sources, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI), to prepare inputs for machine learning algorithms. Two classification models are presented: classification of flares from quiet times for active regions and classification of strong versus weak flare events. We adopt deep learn…
The most violent space weather events (eruptive solar flares and coronal mass ejections) are driven by the release of free magnetic energy stored in the solar corona. Energy can build up on timescales of hours to days, and then may be suddenly released in the form of a magnetic eruption, which then propagates through interplanetary space, possibly impacting the Earth's space environment. Can we use the observed evolution of the magnetic and velocity fields in the solar photosphere to model the evolution of the overlying solar coronal field, including the storage and release of magnetic energy …
We compare the size distributions of self-organized criticality (SOC) systems in the solar photosphere and the transition region, using magnetogram data from Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) and Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS)} data. For each dataset we fit a combination of a Gaussian and a power law size distribution function, which yields information on four different physical processes: (i) Gaussian random noise in IRIS data; (ii) spicular events in the plages of the transition region (described by power law size distribution in IRIS data); (iii) salt-and-pepper small-sca…
In this paper, we came to conclusion that there is a significant systematic error in the SDO/HMI vector magnetic data, which reveals itself in a significant deviation of the lines of the knot magnetic fields from the radial direction. The value of this deviation demonstrates a clear dependence on the distance to the disk center. This paper suggests a method for correction of the vector magnetograms that eliminates the detected systematic error.
The coronal magnetic field evolution of AR 11437 is simulated by applying the magnetofrictional relaxation technique of Mackay et al. (2011). A sequence of photospheric line-of-sight magnetograms produced by SDO/HMI are used to drive the simulation and continuously evolve the coronal magnetic field of the active region through a series of non-linear force-free equilibria. The simulation is started during the first stages of the active region emergence so that its full evolution from emergence to decay can be simulated. A comparison of the simulation results with SDO/AIA observations show that …
Toward a live homogeneous database of solar active regions based on SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI synoptic magnetograms.II.parameters for solar cycle variability
The Sun's axisymmetric flows, differential rotation and meridional flow, govern the dynamics of the solar magnetic cycle and variety of methods are used to measure these flows, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Flow measurements based on cross-correlating images of the surface magnetic field have been made since the 1970s which require advanced numerical techniques that are capable of detecting movements of less than the pixel size in images of the Sun. We have identified several systematic errors in addition to the center-to-limb effect that influence previous measurements of these …
The solar coronal magnetic field produces solar activity, including extremely energetic solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Knowledge of the structure and evolution of the magnetic field of the solar corona is important for investigating and understanding the origins of space weather. Although the coronal field remains difficult to measure directly, there is considerable interest in accurate modeling of magnetic fields in and around sunspot regions on the Sun using photospheric vector magnetograms as boundary data. In this work, we investigate effects of the size of the domain chos…
The Coronal Global Evolutionary Model (CGEM) provides data-driven simulations of the magnetic field in the solar corona to better understand the build-up of magnetic energy that leads to eruptive events. The CGEM project has developed six capabilities. CGEM modules (1) prepare time series of full-disk vector magnetic field observations to (2) derive the changing electric field in the solar photosphere over active-region scales. This local electric field is (3) incorporated into a surface flux transport model that reconstructs a global electric field that evolves magnetic flux in a consistent w…
We attempt to forecast M-and X-class solar flares using a machine-learning algorithm, called Support Vector Machine (SVM), and four years of data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory's Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager, the first instrument to continuously map the full-disk photospheric vector magnetic field from space. Most flare forecasting efforts described in the literature use either line-of-sight magnetograms or a relatively small number of ground-based vector magnetograms. This is the first time a large dataset of vector magnetograms has been used to forecast solar flares. We build a cata…
We propose a forecasting approach for solar flares based on data from Solar Cycle 24, taken by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission. In particular, we use the Space-weather HMI Active Region Patches (SHARP) product that facilitates cut-out magnetograms of solar active regions (AR) in the Sun in near-real-time (NRT), taken over a five-year interval (2012 - 2016). Our approach utilizes a set of thirteen predictors, which are not included in the SHARP metadata, extracted from line-of-sight and vector photospheric magnetograms. We exploit…
We have developed a data-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model of the global solar corona which uses characteristically-consistent boundary conditions (BCs) at the inner boundary. Our global solar corona model can be driven by different observational data including Solar Dynamics Observatory/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (SDO/HMI) synoptic vector magnetograms together with the horizontal velocity data in the photosphere obtained by the time-distance helioseismology method, and the line-of-sight (LOS) magnetogram data obtained by HMI, Solar and Heliospheric Observatory/Michelson Doppler Ima…

In the quiet solar photosphere, the mixed polarity fields form a magnetic carpet, which continuously evolves due to dynamical interaction between the convective motions and magnetic field. This interplay is a viable source to heat the solar atmosphere. In this work, we used the line-of-sight (LOS) magnetograms obtained from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on the \textit{Solar Dynamics Observatory} (\textit{SDO}), and the Imaging Magnetograph eXperiment (IMaX) instrument on the \textit{Sunrise} balloon-borne observatory, as time dependent lower boundary conditions, to study the evolu…

The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) provides continuum images and magnetograms with a cadence better than one per minute. It has been continuously observing the Sun 24 hours a day for the past 7 years. The obvious trade-off between full disk observations and spatial resolution makes HMI not enough to analyze the smallest-scale events in the solar atmosphere. Our aim is to develop a new method to enhance HMI data, simultaneously deconvolving and super-resolving images and magnetograms. The resulting images will mimic observations with a diffraction-limited telescope twice the diameter of…
Preprocess the Photospheric Vector Magnetograms for NLFFF Extrapolation using a Potential Field Model and an Optimization Method
CESE-MHD-NLFFF(Jiang,Feng,and Xiang,2012; Jiang and Feng,2012)一致。
Recently, the National Solar Observatory (NSO) Solar-atmosphere Pipeline Working Group has undertaken the production of synoptic maps from Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) magnetograms. A set of maps has been processed spanning the data available for 2010-2015 using twice daily images (taken at UT midnight and noon) and running them through the same algorithms used to produce SOLIS/VSM 6302l mean-magnetic and spatial-variance maps. The contents of this document provide an overview of what these maps look like, and the processing steps used to generate them from the original HMI input dat…
Here we report evidence of a large solar filament eruption on 2013, September 29. This smooth eruption, which passed without any previous flare, formed after a two-ribbon flare and a coronal mass ejection towards Earth. The coronal mass ejection generated a moderate geomagnetic storm on 2013, October 2 with very serious localized effects. The whole event passed unnoticed to flare-warning systems. We have conducted multi-wavelength analyses of the Solar Dynamics Observatory through Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) data. The AIA data on 304, 193, 211,…
Analysis on Correlations between Subsurface Kinetic Helicity and Photospheric Current Helicity in Active Regions
We analyse the spatial distribution of current helicity in solar active regions. A comparison of current helicity maps derived from three different instruments (Helioseismic and Magnetc Imager on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory, SDO/HMI, Spectro-Polarimeter on board the Hinode, and Solar Magnetic Field Telescope at the Huairou Solar Observing Station, China, HSOS/SMFT) is carried out. The comparison showed an excellent correlation between the maps derived from the spaceborne instruments and moderate correlation between the maps derived from SDO/HMI and HSOS/SMFT vector magnetograms. The r…
longitudinal magnetic field often suffers the saturation effect in strong magnetic field region when the measurement performs in a single-wavelength point and linear calibration is adopted. In this study, we develop a method that can judge the threshold of saturation in Stokes $V/I$ observed by the Solar Magnetic Field Telescope (SMFT) and correct for it automatically. The procedure is that first perform the second-order polynomial fit to the Stokes $V/I$ \textit{vs} $I/I_{m}$ ($I_{m}$ is the maximum value of Stokes $I$) curve to estimate the threshold of saturation, then reconstruct Stokes $V…
The solar active region NOAA 11719 produced a large two-ribbon flare on 11 April 2013. We have investigated the sudden variations in the photospheric magnetic fields in this active region during the flare employing the magnetograms obtained in the spectral line Fe I 6173 Angstrom by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The analysis of the line-of-sight magnetograms from HMI show sudden and persistent magnetic field changes at different locations of the active region before the onset of the flare and during the flare. The vector magnetic field obs…
It is generally believed that the evolution of magnetic helicity has a close relationship with solar activity. Before the launch of SDO, earlier studies have mostly used MDI/SOHO line of sight magnetograms and assumed that magnetic fields are radial when calculating magnetic helicity injection rate from photospheric magnetograms. However, this assumption is not necessarily true. Here we use the vector magnetograms and line of sight magnetograms, both taken by HMI/SDO, to estimate the effects of non-radial magnetic field on measuring magnetic helicity injection rate. We find that: 1) The effect…
我们对AR 10930的Hinode SOT SP矢量磁图进行了比较,这些磁图用三种代码消除了歧义:SFQ、NPFC(Georgoulis,2005)和SME(Rudenko等人,2010年)。
Achieving sub-arcsecond co-registration across varying time-lines of multi-wavelength and instrument images is not trivial, and requires accurate characterization of instrument pointing jitter. In this work we have investigated internal pointing errors, on daily and yearly time-scales, occurring across the \textit{Solar Dynamics Observatory}'s (SDO) {\it Atmospheric Imaging Assembly} (AIA) and { \it Helioseismic Magnetic Imager} (HMI). Using cross-correlation techniques on AIA 1700\,Å passband and HMI line-of-sight (LOS) magnetograms, from three years of observational image pairs at approximat…
Solar flares are explosions in the solar atmosphere that release intense bursts of short-wavelength radiation and are capable of producing severe space-weather consequences. Flares release free energy built up in coronal fields, which are rooted in active regions (ARs) on the photosphere, via magnetic reconnection. The exact processes that lead to reconnection are not fully known and therefore reliable forecasting of flares is challenging. Recently, photospheric magnetic-field data has been extensively analysed using machine learning (ML) and these studies suggest that flare-forecasting accura…
We reassess the relationship between the photospheric magnetic field strength and the Ca II K intensity for a variety of surface features as a function of the position on the disc and the solar activity level. This relationship can be used to recover the unsigned photospheric magnetic field from images recorded in the core of Ca II K line. We have analysed 131 pairs of high-quality, full-disc, near-co-temporal observations from SDO/HMI and Rome/PSPT spanning half a solar cycle. To analytically describe the observationally-determined relation, we considered three different functions: a power la…
The photospheric response to solar flares, also known as coronal back reaction, is often observed as sudden flare-induced changes in vector magnetic field and sunspot motions. However, it remains obscure whether evolving flare ribbons, the flare signature closest to the photosphere, are accompanied by changes in vector magnetic field therein. Here we explore the relationship between the dynamics of flare ribbons in the chromosphere and variations of magnetic fields in the underlying photosphere, using high-resolution off-band H-alpha images and near-infrared vector magnetograms of the M6.5 fla…
Adverse space weather effects can often be traced to solar flares, prediction of which has drawn significant research interests. The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) produces full-disk vector magnetograms with continuous high cadence, while flare prediction efforts utilizing this unprecedented data source are still limited. Here we report results of flare prediction using physical parameters provided by the Space-weather HMI Active Region Patches (SHARP) and related data products. We survey X-ray flares occurred from 2010 May to 2016 December, and categorize their source regions into fou…
A hybrid two-stage machine learning architecture that addresses the problem of excessive false positives (false alarms) in solar flare prediction systems is investigated. The first stage is a convolutional neural network (CNN) model based on the VGG-16 architecture that extracts features from a temporal stack of consecutive Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) magnetogram images to produce a flaring probability. The probability of flaring is added to a feature vector derived from the magnetograms to train an extremely randomized trees (ERT) model in the secon…
Images of the Sun at millimeter wavelengths obtained by ALMA show a significant correspondence with the magnetograms. In this paper, we investigate this correspondence by comparing ALMA full-disk solar image taken at 1.2 mm with a SDO/HMI magnetogram and analyze their correlation. It is found that chromospheric network and active regions show a positive correlation where brightness temperature is increasing with the line-of-sight magnetic field strength, while sunspots have a negative correlation. Quiet Sun regions do not show any dependence of the brightness temperature with the magnetic fiel…
We analysed line-of-sight magnetic fields and magnetic power spectra of an undisturbed photosphere using magnetograms acquired by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on-board the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) and the Near InfraRed Imaging Spectrapolarimeter (NIRIS) operating at the Goode Solar Telescope (GST) of the Big Bear Solar Observatory. In the NIRIS data revealed the presence of thin flux tubes of 200-400~km in diameter and of field strength of 1000-2000~G. The HMI power spectra determined for a coronal hole, a quiet sun and a plage areas exhibit the same spectral index of -1 o…
