Hybrid systems are characterized by having an interaction between continuous dynamics and discrete events. The contribution of this paper is to provide hybrid systems with a novel geometric formulation so that controls can be added. Using this framework we describe some new global controllability tests for hybrid control systems exploiting the geometry and the topology of the set of jump points, where the instantaneous change of dynamics take place. Controllability is understood as the existence of a feasible trajectory for the system joining any two given points. As a result we describe examples where none of the continuous control systems are controllable, but the associated hybrid system is controllable because of the characteristics of the jump set.
We prove the semi-global controllability and stabilization of the $(1+1)$-dimensional wave maps equation with spatial domain $\mathbb{S}^1$ and target $\mathbb{S}^k$. First we show that damping stabilizes the system when the energy is strictly below the threshold $2π$, where harmonic maps appear as obstruction for global stabilization. Then, we adapt an iterative control procedure to get low-energy exact controllability of the wave maps equation. This result is optimal in the case $k=1$.
The goal of this work is to prove global controllability and stabilization properties for the fractional Schrödinger equation on $d$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary $(M,g)$. To prove our main results we use techniques of pseudo-differential calculus on manifolds. More precisely, by using microlocal analysis, we are able to prove propagation of regularity which together with the so-called Geometric Control Condition and Unique Continuation Property help us to prove global control results for the system under consideration. As a main novelty this manuscript presents the…
We study the local controllability properties of 2D and 3D bio-mimetic swimmers employing the change of their geometric shape to propel themselves in an incompressible fluid described by Navier-Stokes equations. It is assumed that swimmers' bodies consist of finitely many parts, identified with the fluid they occupy, that are subsequently linked by the rotational and elastic internal forces. These forces are explicitly described and serve as the means to affect the geometric configuration of swimmers' bodies. Similar models were previously investigated in [6]-[13].
We describe a new method which allows us to obtain a result of exact controllability to trajectories of multidimensional conservation laws in the context of entropy solutions and under a mere non-degeneracy assumption on the flux and a natural geometric condition.
In this paper, motivated by the study of optimal control problems for infinite dimensional systems with endpoint state constraints, we introduce the notion of finite codimensional (exact/approximate) controllability. Some equivalent criteria on the finite codimensional controllability are presented. In particular, the finite codimensional exact controllability is reduced to deriving a Gårding type inequality for the adjoint system, which is new for many evolution equations. This inequality can be verified for some concrete problems (and hence applied to the corresponding optimal control proble…
We study the memory-type null controllability property for wave equations involving memory terms. The goal is not only to drive the displacement and the velocity (of the considered wave) to rest at some time-instant but also to require the memory term to vanish at the same time, ensuring that the whole process reaches the equilibrium. This memory-type null controllability problem can be reduced to the classical null controllability property for a coupled PDE-ODE system. The later is viewed as a degenerate system of wave equations, the velocity of propagation for the ODE component vanishing. Th…
In this article, we study the controllability issues of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert Equations (LLGEs), accompanied with non-zero exchange energy only, in an interval in one spatial dimension with Neumann boundary conditions. The paper is of twofold. In the first part of the paper, we study the controllability issues of the LLGEs. The control force acting here is degenerate i.e., it acts through a few numbers of low mode frequencies. We exploit the Fourier series expansion of the solution. We borrow methods of differential geometric control theory (Lie bracket generating property) to establish …
We prove that the approximate null-controllability with uniform cost of the hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equations posed on $\mathbb R^n$ is characterized by an integral thickness geometric condition on the control supports. We also provide associated quantitative weak observability estimates. This result for the hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equations is deduced from the same study for a large class of non-autonomous elliptic equations from moving control supports. We generalize in particular results known for parabolic equations posed on $\mathbb R^n$, for which the approximate null-con…
The controllability of a fully three-dimensional $N$-link swimmer is studied. After deriving the equations of motion in a low Reynolds number fluid by means of Resistive Force Theory, the controllability of the minimal $2$-link swimmer is tackled using techniques from Geometric Control Theory. The shape of the $2$-link swimmer is described by two angle parameters. It is shown that the associated vector fields that govern the dynamics generate, via taking their Lie brackets, all six linearly independent directions in the configuration space; every direction and orientation can be achieved by op…
We prove that the thickness property is a necessary and sufficient geometric condition that ensures the (rapid) stabilization or the approximate null-controllability with uniform cost of a large class of evolution equations posed on the whole space $\mathbb R^n$. These equations are associated with operators of the form $F(\vert D_x\vert)$, the function $F:[0,+\infty)\rightarrow\mathbb R$ being continuous and bounded from below. We also provide explicit feedbacks and constants associated with these stabilization properties. The notion of thickness is known to be a necessary and sufficient cond…
In this work, we consider networks of so-called geometrically exact beams, namely, shearable beams that may undergo large motions. The corresponding mathematical model, commonly written in terms of displacements and rotations expressed in a fixed basis (Geometrically Exact Beam model, or GEB), has a quasilinear governing system. However, the model may also be written in terms of intrinsic variables expressed in a moving basis attached to the beam (Intrinsic GEB model, or IGEB) and while the number of equations is then doubled, the latter model has the advantage of being of first-order, hyperbo…
In this paper we consider a linear hybrid system which composed by two non-homogeneous rods connected by a point mass and generated by the equation\bea\left\{ \begin{array}{ll} ρ_{1}(x)u_{t}=(σ_{1}(x)u_{x})_{x}-q_{1}(x)u,& x\in(-1,0),~t>0, ρ_{2}(x)v_{t}=(σ_{2}(x)v_{x})_{x}-q_{2}(x)v,& x\in(0,1), ~~~t>0, M z_{t}(t)=σ_{2}(0)v_{x}(0,t)-σ_{1}(0)u_{x}(0,t), &t>0, \end{array} \right. \eea with Dirichlet boundary condition on the left end $x=-1$ and a boundary control acts on the right end $x=1$. We prove that this system is null controllable with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary controls. Our approach …
We consider some generalizations of the classical nonholonomic integrator and give a geometric approach to characterize controllability for these systems. We use Stokes' theorem and results from complex analysis to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for controllability. Furthermore, we show that optimal trajectories of certain minimum energy optimal control problems defined on these systems can be identified with the trajectory of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field.
In this paper, we present a geometric approach for computing controlled invariant sets for hybrid control systems. While the problem is well studied in the ellipsoidal case, this family is quite conservative for constrained or switched linear systems. We reformulate the invariance of a set as an inequality for its support function that is valid for any convex set. This produces novel algebraic conditions for the invariance of sets with polynomial or piecewise quadratic support function.
This work is concerned with the distributed controllability of the one-dimensional wave equation over non-cylindrical domains. The controllability in that case has been obtained in [Castro-Cindea-Munch, Controllability of the linear one-dimensional wave equation with inner moving forces, SIAM J. Control Optim 2014] for domains satisfying the usual geometric optics condition. In the present work, we first show that the corresponding observability property holds true uniformly in a precise class of non-cylindrical domains. Within this class, we then consider, for a given initial datum, the probl…
Hybrid dynamical systems are systems which undergo both continuous and discrete transitions. The Bolza problem from optimal control theory is applied to these systems and a hybrid version of Pontryagin's maximum principle is presented. This hybrid maximum principle is presented to emphasize its geometric nature which makes its study amenable to the tools of geometric mechanics and symplectic geometry. One explicit benefit of this geometric approach is that Zeno behavior can be strongly controlled for "generic" control problems. Moreover, when the underlying control system is a mechanical impac…
In this paper, we tackle the long-standing challenges of ensemble control analysis and design using a convex-geometric approach in a Hilbert space setting. Specifically, we formulate the control of linear ensemble systems as a convex feasibility problem in a Hilbert space, which can be solved by iterative weighted projections. Such a non-trivial geometric interpretation not only enables a systematic design principle for constructing feasible, optimal, and constrained ensemble control signals, but also makes it possible for numerical examination of ensemble reachability and controllability. Fur…
We study the controlled dynamics of the {\it ensembles of points} of a Riemannian manifold $M$. Parameterized ensemble of points of $M$ is the image of a continuous map $γ:Θ\to M$, where $Θ$ is a compact set of parameters. The dynamics of ensembles is defined by the action $γ(θ) \mapsto P_t(γ(θ))$ of the semigroup of diffeomorphisms $P_t:M \to M, \ t \in \mathbb{R}$, generated by the controlled equation $\dot{x}=f(x,u(t))$ on $M$. Therefore any control system on $M$ defines a control system on (generally infinite-dimensional) space $\mathcal{E}_Θ(M)$ of the ensembles of points. We wish to esta…
