Many PDEs involving fractional Laplacian are naturally set in unbounded domains with underlying solutions decay very slowly, subject to certain power laws. Their numerical solutions are under-explored. This paper aims at developing accurate spectral methods using rational basis (or modified mapped Gegenbauer functions) for such models in unbounded domains. The main building block of the spectral algorithms is the explicit representations for the Fourier transform and fractional Laplacian of the rational basis, derived from some useful integral identites related to modified Bessel functions. With these at our disposal, we can construct rational spectral-Galerkin and direct collocation schemes by pre-computing the associated fractional differentiation matrices. We obtain optimal error estimates of rational spectral approximation in the fractional Sobolev spaces, and analyze the optimal convergence of the proposed Galerkin scheme. We also provide ample numerical results to show that the rational method outperforms the Hermite function approach.

In this paper, we propose a fast spectral-Galerkin method for solving PDEs involving integral fractional Laplacian in $\mathbb{R}^d$, which is built upon two essential components: (i) the Dunford-Taylor formulation of the fractional Laplacian; and (ii) Fourier-like bi-orthogonal mapped Chebyshev functions (MCFs) as basis functions. As a result, the fractional Laplacian can be fully diagonalised, and the complexity of solving an elliptic fractional PDE is quasi-optimal, i.e., $O((N\log_2N)^d)$ with $N$ being the number of modes in each spatial direction. Ample numerical tests for various decayi…
Fueled by many applications in random processes, imaging science, geophysics, etc., fractional Laplacians have recently received significant attention. The key driving force behind the success of this operator is its ability to capture non-local effects while enforcing less smoothness on functions. In this paper, we introduce a spectral method to approximate this operator employing a sinc basis. Using our scheme, the evaluation of the operator and its application onto a vector has complexity of $\mathcal O(N\log(N))$ where $N$ is the number of unknowns. Thus, using iterative methods such as CG…
In this paper, we develop a Monte Carlo method for solving PDEs involving an integral fractional Laplacian (IFL) in multiple dimensions. We first construct a new Feynman-Kac representation based on the Green function for the fractional Laplacian operator on the unit ball in arbitrary dimensions. Inspired by the "walk-on-spheres" algorithm proposed in [24], we extend our algorithm for solving fractional PDEs in the complex domain. Then, we can compute the expectation of a multi-dimensional random variable with a known density function to obtain the numerical solution efficiently. The proposed a…
We propose a unified meshless method to solve classical and fractional PDE problems with $(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$ for $α\in (0, 2]$. The classical ($α= 2$) and fractional ($α< 2$) Laplacians, one local and the other nonlocal, have distinct properties. Therefore, their numerical methods and computer implementations are usually incompatible. We notice that for any $α\ge 0$, the Laplacian $(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$ of generalized inverse multiquadric (GIMQ) functions can be analytically written by the Gauss hypergeometric function, and thus propose a GIMQ-based method. Our method unifies the discretization of …

In this paper, we introduce two new families of generalised Hermite polynomials/functions (GHPs/GHFs) in arbitrary dimensions, and develop efficient and accurate generalised Hermite spectral algorithms for PDEs with integral fractional Laplacian (IFL) and/or Schrödinger operators in $\mathbb R^d.$ As a generalisation of the G. Szegö's family in 1D (1939), the first family of GHPs (resp. GHFs) are orthogonal with respect to $|\bx|^{2μ} \e^{-|\bx|^2}$ (resp. $|\bx |^{2μ}$) in $\mathbb R^d$. We further define adjoint generalised Hermite functions (A-GHFs) which have an interwoven connection with …

Recently, new adaptive techniques were developed that greatly improved the efficiency of solving PDEs using spectral methods. These adaptive spectral techniques are especially suited for accurately solving problems in unbounded domains and require the monitoring and dynamic adjustment of three key tunable parameters: the scaling factor, the displacement of the basis functions, and the spectral expansion order. There have been few analyses of numerical methods for unbounded domain problems. Specifically, there is no analysis of adaptive spectral methods to provide insight into how to increase e…
In this paper, we propose a meshfree method based on the Gaussian radial basis function (RBF) to solve both classical and fractional PDEs. The proposed method takes advantage of the analytical Laplacian of Gaussian functions so as to accommodate the discretization of the classical and fractional Laplacian in a single framework and avoid the large computational cost for numerical evaluation of the fractional derivatives. These important merits distinguish it from other numerical methods for fractional PDEs. Moreover, our method is simple and easy to handle complex geometry and local refinement,…

We consider the isogeometric analysis for fractional PDEs involving the fractional Laplacian in two dimensions. An isogeometric collocation method is developed to discretize the fractional Laplacian and applied to the fractional Poisson problem and the time-dependent fractional porous media equation. Numerical studies exhibit monotonous convergence with a rate of $\mathcal{O}(N^{-1})$, where $N$ is the degrees of freedom. A comparison with finite element analysis shows that the method enjoys higher accuracy per degree of freedom and has a better convergence rate. We demonstrate that isogeometr…
In this work, we apply a fast and accurate numerical method for solving fractional reaction-diffusion equations in unbounded domains. By using the Fourier-like spectral approach in space, this method can effectively handle the fractional Laplace operator, leading to a fully diagonal representation of the fractional Laplacian. To fully discretize the underlying nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems, we propose to use an accurate time marching scheme based on ETDRK4. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
In this paper, we propose a novel pseudospectral method to approximate accurately and efficiently the fractional Laplacian without using truncation. More precisely, given a bounded regular function defined over $\mathbb R$, we map the unbounded domain into a finite one, then we represent the function as a trigonometrical series. Therefore, the central point of this paper is the computation of the fractional Laplacian of an elementary trigonometric function. As an application of the method, we also do the simulation of Fisher's equation with fractional Laplacian in the monostable case.
This article provides a brief review of recent developments on two nonlocal operators: fractional Laplacian and fractional time derivative. We start by accounting for several applications of these operators in imaging science, geophysics, harmonic maps and deep (machine) learning. Various notions of solutions to linear fractional elliptic equations are provided and numerical schemes for fractional Laplacian and fractional time derivative are discussed. Special emphasis is given to exterior optimal control problems with a linear elliptic equation as constraints. In addition, optimal control pro…

Multigrid methods are one of the most efficient techniques for solving linear systems arising from Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) and graph Laplacians from machine learning applications. One of the key components of multigrid is smoothing, which aims at reducing high-frequency errors on each grid level. However, finding optimal smoothing algorithms is problem-dependent and can impose challenges for many problems. In this paper, we propose an efficient adaptive framework for learning optimized smoothers from operator stencils in the form of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The CNNs …
A nonlocal perfectly matched layer (PML) is formulated for the nonlocal wave equation in the whole real axis and numerical discretization is designed for solving the reduced PML problem on a bounded domain. The nonlocal PML poses challenges not faced in PDEs. For example, there is no derivative in nonlocal models, which makes it impossible to replace derivates with complex ones. Here we provide a way of constructing the PML for nonlocal models, which decays the waves exponentially impinging in the layer and makes reflections at the truncated boundary very tiny. To numerically solve the nonloca…
The fractional Laplacian has been strongly studied during past decades. In this paper we present a different approach for the associated Dirichlet problem, using recent deep learning techniques. In fact, intensively PDEs with a stochastic representation have been understood via neural networks, overcoming the so-called curse of dimensionality. Among these equations one can find parabolic ones in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and elliptic in a bounded domain $D \subset \mathbb{R}^d$. In this paper we consider the Dirichlet problem for the fractional Laplacian with exponent $α\in (1,2)$. We show that its solut…
