Hybrid interfaces between distinct quantum systems play a major role in the implementation of quantum networks. Quantum states have to be stored in memories to synchronize the photon arrival times for entanglement swapping by projective measurements in quantum repeaters or for entanglement purification. Here, we analyze the distortion of a single photon wave packet propagating through a dispersive and absorptive medium with high spectral resolution. Single photons are generated from a single In(Ga)As quantum dot with its excitonic transition precisely set relative to the Cesium D1 transition. The delay of spectral components of the single photon wave packet with almost Fourier-limited width is investigated in detail with a 200 MHz narrow-band monolithic Fabry-Pérot resonator. Reflecting the excited state hyperfine structure of Cesium, "slow light" and "fast light" behavior is observed. As a step towards room-temperature alkali vapor memories, quantum dot photons are delayed for 5 ns by strong dispersion between the two 1.17 GHz hyperfine-split excited state transitions. Based on optical pumping on the hyperfine-split ground states, we propose a simple, all-optically controllable delay for synchronization of heralded narrow-band photons in a quantum network.
The measurement of Cesium (Cs) 7D5/2 excited state's hyperfine splitting intervals and hyperfine-interaction constants has been experimentally investigated based on ladder-type (852 nm + 698 nm) three-level Cs system (6S1/2 - 6P3/2 - 7D5/2) with room-temperature Cs atomic vapor cell. By scanning the 698-nm coupling laser's frequency, the Doppler-free high-resolution electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) assisted double-resonance optical pumping (DROP) spectra have been demonstrated via transmission enhancement of the locked 852-nm probe laser. The EIT-assisted DROP spectra are employe…
We calculate the weak-driving transmission of a linearly polarized cavity mode strongly coupled to the D2 transition of a single Cesium atom. Results are relevant to future experiments with microtoroid cavities, where the single-photon Rabi frequency g exceeds the excited-state hyperfine splittings, and photonic bandgap resonators, where g is greater than both the excited- and ground-state splitting.
The ability to store large amounts of photonic quantum states is regarded as substantial for future optical quantum computation and communication technologies. However, research for multiplexed quantum memories has been focused on systems that show good performance only after an elaborate preparation of the storage media. This makes it generally more difficult to apply outside a laboratory environment. In this work, we demonstrate a multiplexed random-access memory to store up to four optical pulses using electromagnetically induced transparency in warm cesium vapor. Using a Λ-System on the hy…
Precise knowledge of a quantum system's Hamiltonian is a critical pre-requisite for its use in many quantum information technologies. Here, we report a method for the precise characterization of the non-secular part of the excited-state Hamiltonian of an electronic-nuclear spin system in diamond. The method relies on the investigation of the dynamic nuclear polarization mediated by the electronic spin, which is currently exploited as a primary tool for initializing nuclear qubits and performing enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance. By measuring the temporal evolution of the population of the gr…
The hyperfine structure (hfs) of electron levels of $^{238}_{92}$U ions with the nucleus excited in the low-lying rotational $2^+$ state with an energy $E_{2^+} = 44.91$ keV is investigated. In hydrogenlike uranium, the hfs splitting for the $1s_{1/2}$-ground state of the electron constitutes 1.8 eV. The hyperfine-quenched (hfq) lifetime of the $1s2p ^3P_0$ state has been calculated for heliumlike $^{238}_{92}$U and was found to be two orders of magnitude smaller than for the ion with the nucleus in the ground state. The possibility of a precise determination of the nuclear $g_r$ factor for th…
We calculate the optical potentials, i.e. the light shifts, of the ground and excited states of atomic cesium in a two-color evanescent field around a subwavelength-diameter fiber. We show that the light shifts of the $6S_{1/2}\leftrightarrow 6P_{3/2}$ transitions can be minimized by tuning one trapping light to around 934.5 nm in wavelength (central red-detuned magic wavelength) and the other light to around 685.5 nm in wavelength (central blue-detuned magic wavelength). The simultaneous use of the red- and blue-detuned magic wavelengths allows state-insensitive two-color trapping and guiding…
We present a systematic study on the Raman gray molasses cooling (RGMC) of cesium atoms on the $D_2$ transition. Due to the large splitting in the excited hyperfine transitions of cesium $D_2$ line, it is relatively simple to implement the RGMC with suitable frequency control on the trapping and repumping lasers of the magneto-optical trap (MOT). We have achieved an atom temperature of 1.7$\pm$0.2 $μ$K after the RGMC with $3.2\times 10^8$ atoms. The phase space density is $1.43\times 10^{-4}$. Compared to the condition with a bare MOT or the MOT with a standard polarization gradient cooling, t…
A new optical pumping scheme is presented that uses incoherent Raman transitions to prepare a trapped Cesium atom in a specific Zeeman state within the 6S_{1/2}, F=3 hyperfine manifold. An important advantage of this scheme over existing optical pumping schemes is that the atom can be prepared in any of the F=3 Zeeman states. We demonstrate the scheme in the context of cavity quantum electrodynamics, but the technique is equally applicable to a wide variety of atomic systems with hyperfine ground-state structure.
The spin coherence time of $^{151}$Eu$^{3+}$ which substitutes the yttrium at site 1 in Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal has been extended to 6 hours in a recent work [\textit{Nature} \textbf{517}, 177 (2015)]. To make this long-lived spin coherence useful for optical quantum memory applications, we experimentally characterize the hyperfine interaction of the optically-excited state $^5$D$_0$ using Raman-heterodyne-detected nuclear magnetic resonance. The effective spin Hamiltonians for excited and ground state are fitted based on the experimental spectra obtained in 200 magnetic fields with various orien…
We report on the storage of light via the phenomenon of Coherent Population Oscillation (CPO) in an atomic cesium vapor at room temperature. In the experiment the optical information of a probe field is stored in the CPO of two ground states of a Lambda three-level system formed by the Zeeman sublevels of the hyperfine transition F = 3 - F' = 2 of cesium D2 line. We show directly that this CPO based memory is very insensitive to stray magnetic field inhomogeneities and presents a lifetime which is mainly limited only by atomic motion. A theoretical simulation of the measured spectra was also d…
We study the excitation redistribution from cesium $7\mathrm{P}_{1/2}$ or $7\mathrm{P}_{3/2}$ to neighboring energy levels by Black Body Radiation (BBR) and inter atomic collisions using pump-probe spectroscopy inside a vapor cell. At low vapor densities we measure redistribution of the initial, velocity-selected, atomic excitation by BBR. This preserves the selected atomic velocities allowing us to perform high resolution spectroscopy of the $\mathrm{6D\rightarrow 7F}$ transitions. This transfer mechanism could also be used to perform sub-Doppler spectroscopy of the cesium highly-excited $\ma…
A model for determining the hyperfine structure of the excited electronic states of diatomic bialkali heteronuclear molecules is formulated from the atomic hyperfine interactions, and is applied to the case of bosonic $^{39}$KCs and fermionic $^{40}$KCs molecules. The hyperfine structure of the potential energy curves of the states correlated to the K($4s\,^2S_{1/2}$)+Cs($6p\,^2P_{1/2,3/2}$) dissociation limits is described in terms of different coupling schemes depending on the internuclear distance $R$. These results provide the first step in the calculation of the hyperfine structure of rov…
The study of hyperfine interactions in optically excited fullerenes has recently acquired importance within the context of nuclear spin entanglement for quantum information technology. We here report a first-principles pseudopotential study of the hyperfine coupling parameters of optically excited fullerene derivatives as well as small organic radicals. The calculations are performed within the gauge-invariant projector-augmented wave method [C. Pickard and F. Mauri, Phys. Rev. B. 63, 245101 (2001)]. In order to establish the accuracy of this methodology we compare our results with all-electro…
We characterize the Europium (Eu$^{3+}$) hyperfine interaction of the excited state ($^5$D$_0$) and determine its effective spin Hamiltonian parameters for the Zeeman and quadrupole tensors. An optical free induction decay method is used to measure all hyperfine splittings under weak external magnetic field (up to 10 mT) for various field orientations. On the basis of the determined Hamiltonian we discuss the possibility to predict optical transition probabilities between hyperfine levels for the $^7$F$_{0} \longleftrightarrow ^5$D$_{0}$ transition. The obtained results provide necessary infor…
We present a systematic derivation of the dynamical polarizability and the ac Stark shift of the ground and excited states of atoms interacting with a far-off-resonance light field of arbitrary polarization. We calculate the scalar, vector, and tensor polarizabilities of atomic cesium using resonance wavelengths and reduced matrix elements for a large number of transitions. We analyze the properties of the fictitious magnetic field produced by the vector polarizability in conjunction with the ellipticity of the polarization of the light field.
We study in detail the mechanisms causing dephasing of hyperfine coherences of cesium atoms confined by a far off-resonant standing wave optical dipole trap [S. Kuhr et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 213002 (2003)]. Using Ramsey spectroscopy and spin echo techniques, we measure the reversible and irreversible dephasing times of the ground state coherences. We present an analytical model to interpret the experimental data and identify the homogeneous and inhomogeneous dephasing mechanisms. Our scheme to prepare and detect the atomic hyperfine state is applied at the level of a single atom as well as…
We study optical gain in a gas of cold 39K atoms. The gain is observed during operation of a conventional magneto-optical trap without the need for additional fields. Measurements of transmission spectra from a weak probe show that the gain is due to stimulated Raman scattering between hyperfine ground states. The experimental results are reproduced by a simplified six-level model, which also helps explain why such gain is not observed in similar experiments with rubidium or cesium.
We propose the implementation of a geometric-phase gate on magnetic-field-insensitive qubits with $\hatσ^z$-dependent forces for trapped ion quantum computing. The force is exerted by two laser beams in a Raman configuration. Qubit-state dependency is achieved by a small frequency detuning from the virtually-excited state. Ion species with excited states of long radiative lifetimes are used to reduce the chance of a spontaneous photon emission to less than 10$^{-8}$ per gate-run. This eliminates the main source of gate infidelity of previous implementations. With this scheme it seems possible …
We show that crystal-field calculations for $C_1$ point-group symmetry are possible, and that such calculations can be performed with sufficient accuracy to have substantial utility for rare-earth based quantum information applications. In particular, we perform crystal-field fitting for a C$_1$-symmetry site in $^{167}$Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$. The calculation simultaneously includes site-selective spectroscopic data up to 20,000 cm$^{-1}$, rotational Zeeman data, and ground- and excited-state hyperfine structure determined from high-resolution Raman-heterodyne spectroscopy on the 1.5 $μ$m tele…
Based on the multi-level model, we have calculated light shifts for Zeeman states of hyperfine levels of cesium (Cs) 6S1/2 ground state and 6P3/2 excited state. The magic-wavelength linearly-polarized optical dipole trap (ODT) for Cs 6S1/2 F=4, mF=+4 - 6P3/2 F'=5, mF=+5 transition is experimentally constructed and characterized by using the laser-induced fluorescence spectra of trapped single Cs atoms. The magic wavelength is 937.7 nm which produces almost the same light shift for 6S1/2 F=4, mF=+4 ground state and 6P3/2 F'=5, mF=+5 excited state with linearly-polarized ODT laser beam. Compared …
We induce quantum jumps between the hyperfine ground states of one and two Cesium atoms, strongly coupled to the mode of a high-finesse optical resonator, and analyze the resulting random telegraph signals. We identify experimental parameters to deduce the atomic spin state nondestructively from the stream of photons transmitted through the cavity, achieving a compromise between a good signal-to-noise ratio and minimal measurement-induced perturbations. In order to extract optimum information about the spin dynamics from the photon count signal, a Bayesian update formalism is employed, which y…
We present an investigation of the effects of constant but random shifts of the ground hyperfine qubit states in the setting of quantum computing with ion doped crystals. Complex hyperbolic secant pulses can be used to transfer ions reliably to electronically excited states, and a perturbative approach is used to analyse the effect of ground state hyperfine shifts. This analysis shows that the errors due to the hyperfine shift are dynamically supressed during gate operation, a fact we attribute to the AC Stark shift. Furthermore we present an implementation of a controlled phase gate which is …
Measurements of hyperfine polarization quantum beats are used determine the magnetic dipole (A) and electric quadrupole (B) coupling constants in the excited atomic Cs 8p level. The experimental approach is a novel combination of pulsed optical pumping and time-delayed stimulated emission probing of the excited level. From the measured evolution of the atomic linear polarization degree as a function of probe delay time, we determine the hyperfine coupling constants A = 7.42(6) MHz and B = 0.14(29) MHz.
We demonstrate a single-photon Rydberg excitation spectroscopy of cesium (Cs) atoms in a room-temperature vapor cell. Cs atoms are excited directly from 6S1/2 ground state to nP3/2 (n = 70 - 100) Rydberg states with a 318.6 nm ultraviolet (UV) laser, and Rydberg excitation spectra are obtained by transmission enhancement of a probe beam resonant to Cs 6S1/2, F = 4 - 6P3/2, F' = 5 transition as partial population on F = 4 ground state are transferred to Rydberg state .Analysis reveals that the observed spectra are velocity-selective spectroscopy of Rydberg state, from which the amplitude and lin…
We study the deterministic entanglement of a pair of neutral atoms trapped in an optical lattice by coupling to excited-state molecular hyperfine potentials. Information can be encoded in the ground-state hyperfine levels and processed by bringing atoms together pair-wise to perform quantum logical operations through induced electric dipole-dipole interactions. The possibility of executing both diagonal and exchange type entangling gates is demonstrated for two three-level atoms and a figure of merit is derived for the fidelity of entanglement. The fidelity for executing a CPHASE gate is calcu…
We report on the storage of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of light via the phenomenon of Coherent Population Oscillation (CPO) in cold cesium atoms. The experiment is performed using a delayed four wave mixing configuration where the transverse optical information of a probe field carrying OAM associated with its azimuthal phase dependence is stored in the CPO of Zeeman sublevels of the hyperfine transition $F=3\rightarrow F^{\prime}=2$ of cesium $D_{2}$ line. We also demonstrate experimentally the simultaneous storage and retrieval of different OAM states propagating along different directio…
We report on the amplification of an optical vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum via induced narrow Raman gain in an ensemble of cold cesium atoms. A 20\% single-pass Raman gain of a weak vortex signal field is observed with a spectral width of order of 1 MHz, much smaller than the natural width, demonstrating that the amplification process preserves the phase structure of the vortex beam. The gain is observed in the degenerated two-level system associated with the hyperfine transition $6S_{1/2}(F=3)\leftrightarrow 6P_{3/2}(F^{\prime}=2)$ of cesium. Our experimental observations are …
Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has mainly been modelled for three-level systems. In particular, a considerable interest has been dedicated to the Lambda-configuration, with two ground states and one excited state. However, in the alkali-metal atoms, which are commonly used, hyperfine interaction in the excited state introduces several levels which simultaneously participate in the scattering process. When the Doppler broadening is comparable with the hyperfine splitting in the upper state, the three-level Lambda model does not reproduce the experimental results. Here we theoret…
We consider the stimulated Raman transition between two long-lived states via multiple intermediate states, such as between hyperfine ground states in the alkali-metal atoms. We present a concise treatment of the general, multilevel, off-resonant case, and we show how the lightshift emerges naturally in this approach. We illustrate our results by application to alkali-metal atoms and we make specific reference to cesium. We comment on some artifacts, due solely to the geometrical overlap of states, which are relevant to existing experiments.
We present the results of an experimental and theoretical study of the electronically excited $\tripletex$ state of $^{87}$Rb$_2$ molecules. The vibrational energies are measured for deeply bound states from the bottom up to $v'=15$ using laser spectroscopy of ultracold Rb$_2$ Feshbach molecules. The spectrum of each vibrational state is dominated by a 47\,GHz splitting into a $\cog$ and $\clg$ component caused mainly by a strong second order spin-orbit interaction. Our spectroscopy fully resolves the rotational, hyperfine, and Zeeman structure of the spectrum. We are able to describe to first…
We propose a scheme for attaining slow and fast light via coherent control of the hyperfine ground and excited states of an ultracold atomic system. The proposed scheme is theoretically analyzed for the $D_1$ transition of ultracold $^{23}$ Na atoms. The role of field detuning and field intensity on both the population transfer and induced polarization is investigated. It is shown that slow and fast light, with large bandwidth could be obtained in the proposed system. It is inferred that both slow and fast light could co-propagate, pertaining to different optical and Raman transitions. Further…

We employ collisions of individual atomic cesium (Cs) impurities with an ultracold rubidium (Rb) gas to probe atomic interaction with hyperfine- and Zeeman-state sensitivity. Controlling the Rb bath's internal state yields access to novel phenomena observed in inter-atomic spin-exchange. These can be tailored at ultra-low energies, owing to the excellent experimental control over all relevant energy scales. First, detecting spin-exchange dynamics in the Cs hyperfine state manifold, we resolve a series of previously unreported Feshbach resonances at magnetic fields below 300 mG, separated by en…
