The recently proposed audio-visual scene-aware dialog task paves the way to a more data-driven way of learning virtual assistants, smart speakers and car navigation systems. However, very little is known to date about how to effectively extract meaningful information from a plethora of sensors that pound the computational engine of those devices. Therefore, in this paper, we provide and carefully analyze a simple baseline for audio-visual scene-aware dialog which is trained end-to-end. Our method differentiates in a data-driven manner useful signals from distracting ones using an attention mechanism. We evaluate the proposed approach on the recently introduced and challenging audio-visual scene-aware dataset, and demonstrate the key features that permit to outperform the current state-of-the-art by more than 20\% on CIDEr.
With the recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Intelligent Virtual Assistants (IVA) such as Alexa, Google Home, etc., have become a ubiquitous part of many homes. Currently, such IVAs are mostly audio-based, but going forward, we are witnessing a confluence of vision, speech and dialog system technologies that are enabling the IVAs to learn audio-visual groundings of utterances. This will enable agents to have conversations with users about the objects, activities and events surrounding them. In this work, we present three main architectural explorations for the Audio Visual Sce…

Dialog systems need to understand dynamic visual scenes in order to have conversations with users about the objects and events around them. Scene-aware dialog systems for real-world applications could be developed by integrating state-of-the-art technologies from multiple research areas, including: end-to-end dialog technologies, which generate system responses using models trained from dialog data; visual question answering (VQA) technologies, which answer questions about images using learned image features; and video description technologies, in which descriptions/captions are generated from…

We introduce dGSLM, the first "textless" model able to generate audio samples of naturalistic spoken dialogues. It uses recent work on unsupervised spoken unit discovery coupled with a dual-tower transformer architecture with cross-attention trained on 2000 hours of two-channel raw conversational audio (Fisher dataset) without any text or labels. We show that our model is able to generate speech, laughter and other paralinguistic signals in the two channels simultaneously and reproduces more naturalistic and fluid turn-taking compared to a text-based cascaded model.

There exists an unequivocal distinction between the sound produced by a static source and that produced by a moving one, especially when the source moves towards or away from the microphone. In this paper, we propose to use this connection between audio and visual dynamics for solving two challenging tasks simultaneously, namely: (i) separating audio sources from a mixture using visual cues, and (ii) predicting the 3D visual motion of a sounding source using its separated audio. Towards this end, we present Audio Separator and Motion Predictor (ASMP) -- a deep learning framework that leverages…

State-of-the-art approaches for visually-guided audio source separation typically assume sources that have characteristic sounds, such as musical instruments. These approaches often ignore the visual context of these sound sources or avoid modeling object interactions that may be useful to better characterize the sources, especially when the same object class may produce varied sounds from distinct interactions. To address this challenging problem, we propose Audio Visual Scene Graph Segmenter (AVSGS), a novel deep learning model that embeds the visual structure of the scene as a graph and seg…

Reflective and textureless surfaces such as windows, mirrors, and walls can be a challenge for object and scene reconstruction. These surfaces are often poorly reconstructed and filled with depth discontinuities and holes, making it difficult to cohesively reconstruct scenes that contain these planar discontinuities. We propose Echoreconstruction, an audio-visual method that uses the reflections of sound to aid in geometry and audio reconstruction for virtual conferencing, teleimmersion, and other AR/VR experience. The mobile phone prototype emits pulsed audio, while recording video for RGB-ba…
In this paper, we present deep learning frameworks for audio-visual scene classification (SC) and indicate how individual visual and audio features as well as their combination affect SC performance. Our extensive experiments, which are conducted on DCASE (IEEE AASP Challenge on Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events) Task 1B development dataset, achieve the best classification accuracy of 82.2%, 91.1%, and 93.9% with audio input only, visual input only, and both audio-visual input, respectively. The highest classification accuracy of 93.9%, obtained from an ensemble of aud…

In this paper, we propose two techniques, namely joint modeling and data augmentation, to improve system performances for audio-visual scene classification (AVSC). We employ pre-trained networks trained only on image data sets to extract video embedding; whereas for audio embedding models, we decide to train them from scratch. We explore different neural network architectures for joint modeling to effectively combine the video and audio modalities. Moreover, data augmentation strategies are investigated to increase audio-visual training set size. For the video modality the effectiveness of sev…
The thud of a bouncing ball, the onset of speech as lips open -- when visual and audio events occur together, it suggests that there might be a common, underlying event that produced both signals. In this paper, we argue that the visual and audio components of a video signal should be modeled jointly using a fused multisensory representation. We propose to learn such a representation in a self-supervised way, by training a neural network to predict whether video frames and audio are temporally aligned. We use this learned representation for three applications: (a) sound source localization, i.…
Previous works on scene classification are mainly based on audio or visual signals, while humans perceive the environmental scenes through multiple senses. Recent studies on audio-visual scene classification separately fine-tune the largescale audio and image pre-trained models on the target dataset, then either fuse the intermediate representations of the audio model and the visual model, or fuse the coarse-grained decision of both models at the clip level. Such methods ignore the detailed audio events and visual objects in audio-visual scenes (AVS), while humans often identify different scen…
We present a novel framework, Localized Image Stylization with Audio (LISA) which performs audio-driven localized image stylization. Sound often provides information about the specific context of the scene and is closely related to a certain part of the scene or object. However, existing image stylization works have focused on stylizing the entire image using an image or text input. Stylizing a particular part of the image based on audio input is natural but challenging. In this work, we propose a framework that a user provides an audio input to localize the sound source in the input image and…

Recently, audio-visual scene classification (AVSC) has attracted increasing attention from multidisciplinary communities. Previous studies tended to adopt a pipeline training strategy, which uses well-trained visual and acoustic encoders to extract high-level representations (embeddings) first, then utilizes them to train the audio-visual classifier. In this way, the extracted embeddings are well suited for uni-modal classifiers, but not necessarily suited for multi-modal ones. In this paper, we propose a joint training framework, using the acoustic features and raw images directly as inputs f…
In this technical report, the systems we submitted for subtask 1B of the DCASE 2021 challenge, regarding audiovisual scene classification, are described in detail. They are essentially multi-source transformers employing a combination of auditory and visual features to make predictions. These models are evaluated utilizing the macro-averaged multi-class cross-entropy and accuracy metrics. In terms of the macro-averaged multi-class cross-entropy, our best model achieved a score of 0.620 on the validation data. This is slightly better than the performance of the baseline system (0.658). With reg…
The use of multiple and semantically correlated sources can provide complementary information to each other that may not be evident when working with individual modalities on their own. In this context, multi-modal models can help producing more accurate and robust predictions in machine learning tasks where audio-visual data is available. This paper presents a multi-modal model for automatic scene classification that exploits simultaneously auditory and visual information. The proposed approach makes use of two separate networks which are respectively trained in isolation on audio and visual …

We introduce the task of scene-aware dialog. Our goal is to generate a complete and natural response to a question about a scene, given video and audio of the scene and the history of previous turns in the dialog. To answer successfully, agents must ground concepts from the question in the video while leveraging contextual cues from the dialog history. To benchmark this task, we introduce the Audio Visual Scene-Aware Dialog (AVSD) Dataset. For each of more than 11,000 videos of human actions from the Charades dataset, our dataset contains a dialog about the video, plus a final summary of the v…

There have been many attempts to build multimodal dialog systems that can respond to a question about given audio-visual information, and the representative task for such systems is the Audio Visual Scene-Aware Dialog (AVSD). Most conventional AVSD models adopt the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based video feature extractor to understand visual information. While a CNN tends to obtain both temporally and spatially local information, global information is also crucial for boosting video understanding because AVSD requires long-term temporal visual dependency and whole visual information. Humans can imagine a scene from a sound. We want machines to do so by using conditional generative adversarial networks (GANs). By applying the techniques including spectral norm, projection discriminator and auxiliary classifier, compared with naive conditional GAN, the model can generate images with better quality in terms of both subjective and objective evaluations. Almost three-fourth of people agree that our model have the ability to generate images related to sounds. By inputting different volumes of the same sound, our model output different scales of changes based on the volumes, show…
Visual question answering and visual dialogue tasks have been increasingly studied in the multimodal field towards more practical real-world scenarios. This paper proposes an intuitive mechanism that fuses features and attention in multiple stages in order to well integrate multimodal features, and the results demonstrate its capabil…

Visual dialog has witnessed great progress after introducing various vision-oriented goals into the conversation, especially such as GuessWhich and GuessWhat, where the only image is visible by either and both of the questioner and the answerer, respectively. Researchers explore more on visual dialog tasks in such kind of single- or perfectly co-observable visual scene, while somewhat neglect the exploration on tasks of non perfectly co-observable visual scene, where the images accessed by two agents may not be exactly the same, often occurred in practice. Although building common ground in no…
We describe in this report our audio scene recognition system submitted to the DCASE 2016 challenge. Firstly, given the label set of the scenes, a label tree is automatically constructed. This category taxonomy is then used in the feature extraction step in which an audio scene instance is represented by a label tree embedding image. Different convolutional neural networks, which are tailored for the task at hand, are finally learned on top of the image features for scene recognition. Our system reaches an overall recognition accuracy of 81.2% and 83.3% and outperforms the DCASE 2016 baseline …

Then, a wide range of deep learning frameworks are proposed to deploy either audio or visual input data independently. Finally, results obtained from high-performed deep learning frameworks are fused to achieve the best accuracy score. Our ex…

How does audio describe the world around us? In this paper, we propose a method for generating an image of a scene from sound. Our method addresses the challenges of dealing with the large gaps that often exist between sight and sound. We design a model that works by scheduling the learning procedure of each model component to associate audio-visual modalities despite their information gaps. The key idea is to enrich the audio features with visual information by learning to align audio to visual latent space. We translate the input audio to visual features, then use a pre-trained generator to …

Although 360\textdegree{} cameras ease the capture of panoramic footage, it remains challenging to add realistic 360\textdegree{} audio that blends into the captured scene and is synchronized with the camera motion. We present a method for adding scene-aware spatial audio to 360\textdegree{} videos in typical indoor scenes, using only a conventional mono-channel microphone and a speaker. We observe that the late reverberation of a room's impulse response is usually diffuse spatially and directionally. Exploiting this fact, we propose a method that synthesizes the directional impulse response b…

Audio-Visual scene understanding is a challenging problem due to the unstructured spatial-temporal relations that exist in the audio signals and spatial layouts of different objects and various texture patterns in the visual images. Recently, many studies have focused on abstracting features from convolutional neural networks while the learning of explicit semantically relevant frames of sound signals and visual images has been overlooked. To this end, we present an end-to-end framework, namely attentional graph convolutional network (AGCN), for structure-aware audio-visual scene representatio…
