The single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 (FeSe/STO) films have attracted much attention because of their simple crystal structure, distinct electronic structure and record high superconducting transition temperature (Tc). The origin of the dramatic Tc enhancement in single-layer FeSe/STO films and the dichotomy of superconductivity between single-layer and multiple-layer FeSe/STO films are still under debate. Here we report a comprehensive high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements on the electronic structure evolution with doping in single-layer and multiple-layer FeSe/STO films. We find that the single-layer FeSe/STO films have a distinct parent phase and a route of doping evolution to superconductivity that are fundamentally different from multiple-layer FeSe/STO films. The parent phase of the single-layer FeSe/STO films is insulating, and its doping evolution is very similar to that of doping a Mott insulator in cuprate superconductors. In multiple-layer FeSe/STO films, high-Tc superconductivity occurs by suppressing the nematic order in the parent compound with electron doping. The single-layer FeSe/STO films represent the first clear case in the iron-based superconductors that the parent compound is an insulator. Our observations of the unique parent state and doping evolution in the single-layer FeSe/STO films provide key insight in understanding its record high-Tc superconductivity. They also provide a new route of realizing superconductivity in iron-based superconductors that is common in high temperature cuprate superconductors.
The latest discovery of possible high temperature superconductivity in the single-layer FeSe film grown on a SrTiO3 substrate, together with the observation of its unique electronic structure and nodeless superconducting gap, has generated much attention. Initial work also found that, while the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film exhibits a clear signature of superconductivity, the double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film shows an insulating behavior. Such a dramatic difference between the single-layer and double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films is surprising and the underlying origin remains unclear. Here we report ou…
Recent experiments have reported that inserting metal atoms or small molecules in between the FeSe layers of $β$-FeSe can significantly enhance the superconducting transition temperature. Here, based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, we propose a stable compound SnOFeSe by alternatively stacking the SnO and $β$-FeSe layers. The predicted SnOFeSe has the same tetragonal structure as the well-known FeAs-based compound LaOFeAs, meanwhile their electronic structures in the nonmagnetic state are quite similar. The magnetic ground state of SnOFeSe is predicted to be the dimer an…
In the iron-based superconductors, understanding the relation between superconductivity and electronic structure upon doping is crucial for exploring the pairing mechanism. Recently it was found that in iron selenide (FeSe), enhanced superconductivity (Tc over 40K) can be achieved via electron doping, with the Fermi surface only comprising M-centered electron pockets. Here by utilizing surface potassium dosing, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we studied the electronic structure and superconductivity of (Li0.8Fe0.2OH)Fe…
We have carried out a detailed study to investigate the existence of an insulating parent phase for FeSe superconductor. The insulating Fe4Se5 with specific Fe-vacancy order shows a 3D-Mott variable range hopping behavior with a Verwey-like electronic correlation at around 45 K. The application of the RTA process at 450 celcius degree results in the destruction of Fe-vacancy order and induces more electron carriers by increasing the Fe3+ valence state. Superconductivity emerges with Tc ~ 8K without changing the chemical stoichiometry of the sample after the RTA process by resulting in the addi…
Single monolayer FeSe film grown on Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$(001) substrate shows the highest superconducting transition temperature (T$_C$ $\sim$ 100 K) among the iron-based superconductors (iron-pnictide), while T$_C$ of bulk FeSe is only $\sim$ 8 K. Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations were believed to be crucial in iron-pnictides, which has inspired several proposals to understand the FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ system. Although bulk FeSe does not show the antiferromagnetic order, calculations suggest that the parent FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ films are AFM. Experimentally, due to lacking of direct probe, the magnetic st…
In high temperature cuprate superconductors, it is now generally agreed that the parent compound is a Mott insulator and superconductivity is realized by doping the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. In the iron-based superconductors, however, the parent compound is mostly antiferromagnetic metal, raising a debate on whether an appropriate starting point should go with an itinerant picture or a localized picture. It has been proposed theoretically that the parent compound of the iron-based superconductors may be on the verge of a Mott insulator, but so far no clear experimental evidence of dopi…
It is thought that strong electron correlation in an insulating parent phase would enhance a critical temperature (Tc) of superconductivity in a doped phase via enhancement of the binding energy of a Cooper pair as known in high-Tc cuprates. To induce a superconductor transition in an insulating phase, injection of a high density of carriers is needed (e.g., by impurity doping). An electric double-layer transistor (EDLT) with an ionic liquid gate insulator enables such a field-induced transition to be investigated and is expected to result in a high Tc because it is free from deterioration in …
It is well established that the occurrence of superconductivity in iron pnictides is closely related to the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transitions. It, however, has not been clear whether the same scenario is appropriate for iron chalcogenide counterparts due to the absence of parent compounds for the latter family of superconductors. Here, we report the synthesis and structure determination of two novel phases in ethylenediamine intercalated FeSe, one is tetragonal and the other orthorhombic in room temperature, which can be stabilized with neutral…
Elucidating the nature of the magnetism of a high-temperature superconductor is crucial for establishing its pairing mechanism. The parent compounds of the cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors exhibit Néel and stripe magnetic order, respectively. However, FeSe, the structurally simplest iron-based superconductor, shows nematic order (Ts = 90 K), but not magnetic order in the parent phase, and its magnetic ground state is intensely debated. Here, we report inelastic neutron-scattering experiments that reveal both stripe and Néel spin fluctuations over a wide energy range at 110 K. On enter…
The transition from insulator to superconductor was achieved in the non-superconducting FeSe ultrathin film via simple Mg coating technique in present work. It was found that in non-superconducting FeSe ultrathin film without Mg coating, insulating \b{eta}-Fe1-xSe phase with iron-vacancy disorders is the main phase and more likely to be the parent phase of FeSe superconducting system. Proper Mg coating on the surface of FeSe films can lead to Mg entering FeSe crystal lattice to fill up these Fe vacancies rather than replace Fe. Simultaneously, additional electron doping is introduced and the e…
Using a field-effect transistor (FET) configuration with solid Li-ion conductor (SIC) as gate dielectric, we have successfully tuned carrier density in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ thin flakes, and the electronic phase diagram has been mapped out. It is found that electron doping controlled by SIC-FET leads to a suppression of the superconducting phase, and eventually gives rise to an insulating state in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$. During the gating process, the (001) peak in XRD patterns stays at the same position and no new diffraction peak emerges, indicating no evident Li$^+$ ions intercalation into…
In FeSe-derived superconductors, the lack of a systematic and clean control on the carrier concentration prevents the comprehensive understanding on the phase diagram and the interplay between different phases. Here by K dosing and angle resolved photoemission study on thick FeSe films and FeSe$_{0.93}$S$_{0.07}$ bulk crystals, the phase diagram of FeSe as a function of electron doping is established, which is extraordinarily different from other Fe-based superconductors. The correlation strength remarkably increases with increasing doping, while an insulting phase emerges in the heavily overd…
Various Fe-vacancy orders have been reported in tetragonal Fe1-xSe single crystals and nanowires/nanosheets, which are similar to those found in alkali metal intercalated A1-xFe2-ySe2 superconductors. Here we report the in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of Fe-vacancy disordered and ordered phases in FeSe multi-layer thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Low temperature annealed FeSe films are identified to be Fe-vacancy disordered phase and electron doped. Further long-time low temperature anneal can change the Fe-vacancy disordered phase to ordered phase, which is …
Interface enhanced superconductivity at two dimensional limit has become one of most intriguing research directions in condensed matter physics. Here, we report the superconducting properties of ultra-thin FeSe films with the thickness of one unit cell (1-UC) grown on conductive and insulating SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. For the 1-UC FeSe on conductive STO substrate (Nb-STO), the magnetization versus temperature (M-T) measurement shows a diamagnetic signal at 85 K, suggesting the possibility of superconductivity appears at this high temperature. For the FeSe films on insulating STO substrate, sys…
Unlike the parent phases of the iron-arsenide high Tc superconductors, undoped FeSe is not magnetically ordered and exhibits superconductivity with Tc~9K. Equally surprising is the fact that applied pressure dramatically enhances the modest Tc to ~37K. We investigate the electronic properties of FeSe using 77Se NMR to search for the key to the superconducting mechanism. We demonstrate that the electronic properties of FeSe are very similar to those of electron-doped FeAs superconductors, and that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are strongly enhanced near Tc. Furthermore, applied pressure e…
Diamond anvil cell using boron-doped metallic diamond electrodes covered with undoped diamond insulating layer have been developed for electrical transport measurements under high pressure. These designed diamonds were grown on a bottom diamond anvil via a nanofabrication process combining microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition and electron beam lithography. The resistance measurements of high quality FeSe superconducting single crystal under high pressure were successfully demonstrated by just putting the sample and gasket on the bottom diamond anvil directly. The superconducting…

A large body of experimental data point towards a charge transfer instability of parent insulating cuprates to be their unique property. We argue that the true charge transfer gap in these compounds is as small as 0.4-0.5\,eV rather than 1.5-2.0\,eV as usually derived from the optical gap measurements. In fact we deal with a competition of the conventional (3d$^9$) ground state and a charge transfer (CT) state with formation of electron-hole dimers which evolves under doping to an unconventional bosonic system. Our conjecture does provide an unified standpoint on the main experimental findings…
The magnetic order induced by the pressure was studied in single crystalline FeSe by means of muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) technique. By following the evolution of the oscillatory part of the $μ$SR signal as a function of angle between the initial muon-spin polarization and 101 axis of studied crystal it was found that the pressure induced magnetic order in FeSe corresponds either to the collinear (single-stripe) antiferromagnetic order as observed in parent compounds of various FeAs-based superconductors or to the Bi-Collinear order as obtained in FeTe system, but with the Fe spins turned by 45…
The role played by the insulating intermediate (Li$_{0.84}$Fe$_{0.16}$)OH layer on magnetic and superconducting properties of (Li$_{0.84}$Fe$_{0.16}$)OHFe$_{0.98}$Se was studied by means of muon-spin rotation. It was found that it is not only enhances the coupling between the FeSe layers for temperatures below $\simeq 10$ K, but becomes superconducting by itself due to the proximity to the FeSe ones. Superconductivity in (Li$_{0.84}$Fe$_{0.16}$)OH layers is most probably filamentary-like and the energy gap value, depending on the order parameter symmetry, does not exceed 1-1.5 meV.
Superconductivity in the cuprate superconductors and the Fe-based superconductors is realized by doping the parent compound with charge carriers, or by application of high pressure, to suppress the antiferromagnetic state. Such a rich phase diagram is important in understanding superconductivity mechanism and other physics in the Cu- and Fe-based high temperature superconductors. In this paper, we report a phase diagram in the single-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 substrate by an annealing procedure to tune the charge carrier concentration over a wide range. A dramatic change of the band str…
The properties of iron-based superconductors (Fe-SCs) can be varied dramatically with the introduction of dopants and atomic defects. As a pressing example, FeSe, parent phase of the highest-$T_c$ Fe-SC, exhibits prevalent defects with atomic-scale "dumbbell" signatures as imaged by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). These defects spoil superconductivity when their concentration exceeds 2.5%. Resolving their chemical identity is prerequisite to applications such as nanoscale patterning of superconducting/nonsuperconducting regions in FeSe, as well as fundamental questions such as the mechani…
In contrast to bulk FeSe, which exhibits nematic order and low temperature superconductivity, atomic layers of FeSe reverse the situation, having high temperature superconductivity appearing alongside a suppression of nematic order. To investigate this phenomenon, we study a minimal electronic model of FeSe, with interactions that enhance nematic fluctuations. This model is sign problem free, and is simulated using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC). We developed a DQMC algorithm with parallel tempering, which proves to be an efficient source of global updates and allows us to access the r…
The interest in Fe-chalcogenide unconventional superconductors is intense after the critical temperature of FeSe was reported enhanced by more than one order of magnitude in the monolayer limit at the interface to an insulating oxide substrate. In heterostructures comprising interfaces of FeSe with topological insulators, additional interesting physical phenomena is predicted to arise e.g. in form of {\it topological superconductivity}. So far superconductive properties of Fe-chalcogenide monolayers were mostly studied by local scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments, which can detect pseu…
Recent superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) over 100 K for monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 have renewed interest in the bulk parent compound. In KCl:AlCl3 flux-transport-grown crystals of FeSe0.94Be0.06, FeSe0.97Be0.03 and, for comparison, FeSe, this work reports doping of FeSe using Be, among the smallest of possible dopants, corresponding to an effective chemical pressure. According to lattice parameter measurements, 6% Be doping shrank the tetragonal FeSe lattice equivalent to a physical pressure of 0.75 GPa. Using this flux-transport method of sample preparation, 6% of Be was the maximum …
The discovery of superconductivity (SC) with a transition temperature, Tc, up to 65K in single-layer FeSe (bulk Tc =8K) films grown on SrTiO3 substrates has attracted special attention to Fe-based thin films. The high Tc is a consequence of the combined effect of electron transfer from the oxygen-vacant substrate to the FeSe thin film and lattice tensile strain. Here we demonstrate the realization of SC in the parent compound BaFe2As2 (no bulk Tc) just by tensile lattice strain without charge doping. We investigate the interplay between strain and SC in epitaxial BaFe2As2 thin films on Fe-buff…
We report the first observation of superconductivity in heterostructure consisting of an insulating ferroelectric film (Ba$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$TiO$_3$) grown on an insulating parent compound of La$_2$CuO$_4$ with [001] orientation. The heterostructure was prepared by magnetron sputtering on a non-atomically-flat surface with inhomogeneities of the order of 1-2 nm. The measured superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ is about 30K. We have shown that superconductivity is confined near the interface region. Application of a weak magnetic field perpendicular to the interface leads to the appeara…
Understanding the superconductivity at the interface of FeSe/SrTiO3 is a problem of great contemporary interest due to the significant increase in critical temperature (Tc) compared to that of bulk FeSe, as well as the possibility of an unconventional pairing mechanism and topological superconductivity. We report a study of the influence of a capping layer on superconductivity in thin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO3 using molecular beam epitaxy. We used in vacuo four-probe electrical resistance measurements and ex situ magneto-transport measurements to examine the effect of three capping layers …
Bulk FeSe is superconducting with a critical temperature $T_c$ $\cong$ 8 K and SrTiO$_3$ is insulating in nature, yet high-temperature superconductivity has been reported at the interface between a single-layer FeSe and SrTiO$_3$. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements observe a gap opening at the Fermi surface below $\approx$ 60 K. Elucidating the microscopic properties and understanding the pairing mechanism of single-layer FeSe is of utmost importance as it is a basic building block of iron-based superconductors. Here, we use the low-energy …
We develop a novel field effect transistor (FET) device using solid ion conductor (SIC) as a gate dielectric, and we can tune the carrier density of FeSe by driving lithium ions in and out of the FeSe thin flakes, and consequently control the material properties and its phase transitions. A dome-shaped superconducting phase diagram was mapped out with increasing Li content, with $T_c$ $\sim$ 46.6 K for the optimal doping, and an insulating phase was reached at the extremely overdoped regime. Our study suggests that, using solid ion conductor as a gate dielectric, the SIC-FET device can achieve…
The recently discovered iron arsenide superconductors, which display superconducting transition temperatures as high as 55 K, appear to share a number of general features with high-Tc cuprates, including proximity to a magnetically ordered state and robustness of the superconductivity in the presence of disorder. Here we show that superconductivity in Fe1+dSe, the parent compound of the superconducting arsenide family, is destroyed by very small changes in stoichiometry. Further, we show that non-superconducting Fe1+dSe is not magnetically ordered down to low temperatures. These results sugges…
The magnetic-field (H) dependence of the thermal conductivity κof Pr_{1.3}La_{0.7}CuO_4 is found to show a pronounced minimum for in-plane fields at low temperature, which is best attributed to the scattering of phonons by free spins that are seen by a Schottky-type specific heat and a Curie-Weiss susceptibility. Besides pointing to a strong spin-phonon coupling in cuprates, the present result demonstrates that the H-dependence of the phonon heat transport should not be naively neglected when discussing the κ(H) behavior of cuprates, since the Schottky anomaly is ubiquitously found in cuprates…
It was observed recently (K. Shigekawa et al, PNAS 116, 2470 (2019)) that while monolayer iron chalcigenide FeSe on SrTiO3 (STO) substrate has a very high critical temperature, its chemical and structural "twin" material FeS=STO has a very low Tc if any. To explain this the substrate interfacial phonon model of superconductivity in iron chalcogenides is further developed. The main glue is the oxygen ion (60mev) vibrations longitudinal optical (LO) mode. The mode propagates mainly in the TiO2 layer adjacent to the monolayer (and genrally present also in similar highly polarized ionic crystals l…
Superconductivity with zero resistance transition temperature (Tc) up to 8.4 K and 8.3 K can be obtained by doping cobalt and sodium in alfa-FeSe with the nominal composition of Fe0.92Co0.08Se and Na0.1FeSe, respectively. The electrical resistivity and AC magnetic susceptibility of the prepared samples, measured with physical property measurement system (PPMS), unambiguously consistent with each other to indicate that the samples are superconductive. The respective doping mechanisms for cobalt and sodium into the parent alfa-FeSe are the Fe-site substitution and the interlayer insertion. It is…
We have investigated the correlation between structural and transport properties in sputtered $β$-FeSe films grown onto SrTiO$_3$ (100). The growth parameters, such as substrate temperature and thickness, have been varied in order to explore different regimes. In the limit of textured thick films, we found promising features like an enhanced $T_{\rm c}\sim12\,$K, a relatively high $H_{\rm c2}$ and a low anisotropy. By performing magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient measurements, we investigate the influence of the disorder associated with the textured morphology on some features attributed t…
Heterostructure based interface engineering has been proved an effective method for finding new superconducting systems and raising superconductivity transition temperature (TC). In previous work on one unit-cell (UC) thick FeSe films on SrTiO3 (STO) substrate, a superconducting-like energy gap as large as 20 meV, was revealed by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) further revealed a nearly isotropic gap of above 15 meV, which closes at a temperature of ~ 65 K. If this transition is indeed the superconducting transitio…
Nominally pure undoped parent manganite LaMnO_3 exhibits a puzzling behavior inconsistent with a simple picture of an A-type antiferromagnetic insulator (A-AFI) with a cooperative Jahn-Teller ordering. We do assign its anomalous properties to charge transfer instabilities and competition between insulating A-AFI phase and metallic-like dynamically disproportionated phase formally separated by a first-order phase transition at T_{disp}=T_{JT}\approx 750 K. The unconventional high-temperature phase is addressed to be a specific electron-hole Bose liquid (EHBL) rather than a simple "chemically" d…
While the parent compounds of the cuprate high temperature superconductors (high-Tc's) are Mott insulators, the iron-pnictide high-Tc's are in the vicinity of a metallic spin density wave (SDW) state, which highlights the difference between these two families. However, insulating parent compounds were identified for the newly discovered KxFe2-ySe2. This raises an intriguing question as to whether the iron-based high-Tc's could be viewed as doped Mott insulators like the cuprates. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) evidence of two insulating and one semiconducting …
Several superconducting transition temperatures in the range of 30-40 K were reported in the recently discovered intercalated FeSe sytem (A1-xFe2-ySe2, A = K, Rb, Cs, Tl). Although the superconducting phases were not yet conclusively decided, more than one magnetic phase with particular orders of iron vacancy and/or potassium vacancy were identified, and some were argued to be the parent phase. Here we show the discovery of the presence and ordering of iron vacancy in nonintercalated FeSe (PbO-type tetragonal β-Fe1-xSe). Three types of iron-vacancy order were found through analytical electron …
Understanding the complex phase diagram of cuprate superconductors is an outstanding challenge. The most actively studied questions surround the nature of the pseudogap and strange metal states and their relationship to superconductivity. In contrast, there is general agreement that the low energy physics of the Mott insulating parent state is well captured by a two-dimensional spin $S$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg model. However, recent observations of a large thermal Hall conductivity in several parent cuprates appear to defy this simple model and suggest proximity to a magneto-c…
In contrast to its bulk crystals, the FeSe film or layer exhibits better superconductivity performance, which attract much interest in its fundamental research as well as potential application. In present work, transition from insulator to superconductor and significant enhancement of superconductivity were achieved in the high quality (00l) oriented FeSe films via controlling the thickness as well as the Fe/Se ratio. The highest Tc up to 15.2 K (almost 2 times higher than those of bulk crystals) and Hc2 up to 35.5 T are obtained in our atmosphere-stable FeSe thin film with practical thickness…
Up to now, there have been two material families, the cuprates and the iron-based compounds with high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC). An essential open question is whether the two classes of materials share the same essential physics. In both, superconductivity (SC) emerges when an antiferromagnetical (AFM) ordered phase is suppressed. However, in cuprates, the repulsive interaction among the electrons is so strong that the parent compounds are "Mott insulators." By contrast, all iron-based parents are metallic. One perspective is that the iron-based parents are weakly correlated and tha…
The superconducting critical temperature, $T_{\rm c}$, of FeSe can be dramatically enhanced by intercalation of a molecular spacer layer. Here we report on a $^{77}$Se, $^7$Li and $^1$H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of the powdered hyper-interlayer-expanded Li$_{x}($C$_2$H$_8$N$_2$)$_y$Fe$_{2-z}$Se$_2$ with a nearly optimal $T_{\rm c}=45$~K. The absence of any shift in the $^7$Li and $^1$H NMR spectra indicates a complete decoupling of interlayer units from the conduction electrons in FeSe layers, whereas nearly temperature-independent $^7$Li and $^1$H spin-lattice relaxation rates ar…
We present an extensive study of the vortex dynamics in Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe single crystal, which is prepared by intercalating insulating spacer layer Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OH into FeSe. Absence of fishtail effect and the crossover from elastic to plastic creep are observed similar to the parent compound FeSe. However, when we apply collective creep theory to the magnetic relaxation data, the obtained creep exponent $μ$ is found to be $\sim$ 4.1 much larger than the predicted maximum value. Besides, the elastic creep in the vortex phase diagram of Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe is found to re…
The recent discovery of high temperature superconductivity in a layered iron arsenide has led to an intensive search to optimize the superconducting properties of iron-based superconductors by changing the chemical composition of the spacer layer that is inserted between adjacent anionic iron arsenide layers. Until now, superconductivity has only been found in compounds with a cationic spacer layer consisting of metal ions: Li+, Na+, K+, Ba2+ or a PbO-type or perovskite-type oxide layer. Electronic doping is usually necessary to control the fine balance between antiferromagnetism and supercond…
We have performed several high pressure electrical resistance experiments on Bi1.98Sr2.06Y0.68Cu2O8, an insulating parent compound of the high-Tc Bi2212 family of copper oxide superconductors. We find a resistive anomaly, a downturn at low temperature, that onsets with applied pressure in the 20-40 kbar range. Through both resistance and magnetoresistance measurements, we identify this anomaly as a signature of induced superconductivity. Resistance to higher pressures decreases Tc, giving a maximum of 10 K. The higher pressure measurements exhibit a strong sensitivity to the hydrostaticity of …
High-Tc superconductivity in cuprates is generally believed to arise from carrier doping an antiferromagnetic Mott (AFM) insulator. Theoretical proposals and emerging experimental evidence suggest that this process leads to the formation of intriguing electronic liquid crystal phases. These phases are characterized by ordered charge and/or spin density modulations, and thought to be intimately tied to the subsequent emergence of superconductivity. The most elusive, insulating charge-stripe crystal phase is predicted to occur when a small density of holes is doped into the charge-transfer insul…
FeSe-derived superconductors show some unique behaviors relative to iron-pnictide superconductors, which are very helpful to understand the mechanism of superconductivity in high-Tc iron-based superconductors. The low-energy electronic structure of the heavily electron-doped AxFe2Se2 (A=K, Rb, Cs) demonstrates that interband scattering or Fermi surface nesting is not a necessary ingredient for the unconventional superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) in the one-unit-cell FeSe on SrTiO3 substrate can reach as high as ~65 K, largely trans…
The transition temperature $T_\textrm{c}$ of unconventional superconductivity is often tunable. For a monolayer of FeSe, for example, the sweet spot is uniquely bound to titanium-oxide substrates. By contrast for La$_{2-\mathrm{x}}$Sr$_\mathrm{x}$CuO$_4$ thin films, such substrates are sub-optimal and the highest $T_\textrm{c}$ is instead obtained using LaSrAlO$_4$. An outstanding challenge is thus to understand the optimal conditions for superconductivity in thin films: which microscopic parameters drive the change in $T_\mathrm{c}$ and how can we tune them? Here we demonstrate, by a combinat…
A1-xFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Cs, Rb, Tl) are recently discovered iron-based superconductors with critical temperatures (Tc) ranging up to 32 K. Their parent phases have unique properties when compared with other iron-based superconductors; e.g., their crystal structures include ordered Fe vacancies, their normal states are antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating phases, and they have extremely high Néel transition temperatures. However, control of carrier doping into the parent AFM insulators has been difficult due to their intrinsic phase separation. Here, we fabricated an Fe-vacancy-ordered TlFe1.6Se2 in…
The recently discovered K-Fe-Se high temperature superconductor has caused heated debate regarding the nature of its parent compound. Transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and STM measurements have suggested that its parent compound could be insulating, semiconducting or even metallic [M. H. Fang, H.-D. Wang, C.-H. Dong, Z.-J. Li, C.-M. Feng, J. Chen, and H. Q. Yuan, Europhys. Lett. 94, 27009 (2011); F. Chen et al. Phys. Rev. X 1, 021020 (2011); and W. Li et al.,Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 057003 (2012)]. Because the magnetic ground states associated with these different phases have …
Recent experiments on twisted bilayer graphene have shown a high-temperature parent state with massless Dirac fermions and broken electronic flavor symmetry; superconductivity and correlated insulators emerge from this parent state at lower temperatures. We propose that the superconducting and correlated insulating orders are connected by Wess-Zumino-Witten terms, so that defects of one order contain quanta of another order and skyrmion fluctuations of the correlated insulator are a "mechanism" for superconductivity. We present a comprehensive listing of plausible low-temperature orders, and t…
The parent compound of an unconventional superconductor must contain unusual correlated electronic and magnetic properties of its own. In the high-Tc potassium intercalated FeSe, there has been significant debate regarding what the exact parent compound is. Our studies unambiguously show that the Fe-vacancy ordered K2Fe4Se5 is the magnetic, Mott insulating parent compound of the superconducting state. Non-superconducting K2Fe4Se5 becomes a superconductor after high temperature annealing, and the overall picture indicates that superconductivity in K2-xFe4+ySe5 originates from the Fe-vacancy ord…
Inspired by the recent experimental evidence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity coexistence in heavy fermion CeRhIn$_5$, we propose a fully microscopic approach based on the idea of real space pairing within the Anderson-Kondo lattice model. We present an overall phase diagram incorporating the emergence of a quantum critical point, where Kondo insulating (KI), antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) phases meet. We also obtain the Kondo insulating state with totally compensated magnetic moments as the parental state for the emerging SC phases. Furthermore, the coexistent (AF+…
Since the discovery of superconductivity at 26 K in oxy-pnictide LaFeAsO1-xFx, enormous interests have been stimulated in the field of condensed matter physics and material sciences. Among the many kind of structures in the iron pnictide superconductors, FeSe with the PbO structure has received special attention since there is not poisonous pnictogen element in chemical composition and its structure is the simplest one. However, the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) in iron chalcogenide compounds is not enhanced as high as other iron pnictide superconductors under ambient pressure un…
