We model the flow of a bi-viscous non-Newtonian fluid in a porous medium by a square lattice where the links obey a piece-wise linear constitutive equation. We find numerically that the flow regime where the network transitions from all links behaving according to the first linear part of the constitutive equation to all links behaving according to the second linear part of the constitutive equation, is characterized by a critical point. We measure two critical exponents associated with this critical point, one of the being the correlation length exponent. We find that both critical exponents depend on the parameters of the model.
We demonstrate through numerical simulations and a mean field calculation that immiscible two-phase flow in a porous medium behaves effectively as a Bingham viscoplastic fluid. This leads to a generalized Darcy equation where the volumetric flow rate depends quadratically on an excess pressure difference in the range of flow rates where the capillary forces compete with the viscous forces. At higher rates, the flow is Newtonian.
Immiscible fluids flowing at high capillary numbers in porous media may be characterized by an effective viscosity. We demonstrate that the effective viscosity is well described by the Lichtenecker-Rother equation. The exponent $α$ in this equation takes either the value 1 or 0.6 in two- and 0.5 in three-dimensional systems depending on the pore geometry. Our arguments are based on analytical and numerical methods.
We study the effect of isotropic porous walls on a plane Couette flow laden with spherical and rigid particles. We perform a parametric study varying the volume fraction between $0$ and $30\%$, the porosity between $0.3$ and $0.9$ and the non-dimensional permeability between $0$ and $7.9 \times 10^{-3}$ We find that the porous walls induce a progressive decrease in the suspension effective viscosity as the wall permeability increases. This behavior is explained by the weakening of the wall-blocking effect and by the appearance of a slip velocity at the interface of the porous medium, which red…
The flow of immiscible fluids inside a porous medium shows non-linearity in the form of a power law in the rheological properties of the fluids under steady state flow conditions. However, different experimental and numerical studies have reported different values for the exponent related to this power law. Here we explore how the rheological properties of the two-phase flow in porous media depends on the distribution of the pore sizes and how it affects the power-law exponent. The pore-size distribution controls fluctuation in the pore radii and their density in a porous material. We present …
In this work, we study non-Newtonian fluid flow in heterogeneous porous media. We are interested in fluids presenting a specific change in rheology: Newtonian below a certain shear rate and power law above. Since porous media generally exhibit strong spatial heterogeneity at large geological scales, we study the interaction between such inhomogeneity and the nonlinear rheology of the fluid. The coupling between permeability heterogeneity and nonlinear rheology significantly affects the flow. We are particularly in the statistical properties of the velocity field (mean, variance, correlation, e…
Blood is a complex suspension that demonstrates several non-Newtonian rheological characteristics such as deformation-rate dependency, viscoelasticity and yield stress. In this paper we outline some issues related to the non-Newtonian effects in blood circulation system and present modeling approaches based mostly on the past work in this field.
We present an experimental and numerical study of immiscible two-phase flow in 3-dimensional (3D) porous media to find the relationship between the volumetric flow rate ($Q$) and the total pressure difference ($ΔP$) in the steady state. We show that in the regime where capillary forces compete with the viscous forces, the distribution of capillary barriers at the interfaces effectively creates a yield threshold, making the fluids reminiscent of a Bingham viscoplastic fluid in the porous medium, introducing a threshold pressure $P_t$. In this regime, $Q$ depends quadratically on an excess press…
Particle motion in non-Newtonian fluids can be markedly different than in Newtonian fluids. Here we look at the change in dynamics for a few problems involving rigid spherical particles in shear-thinning fluids in the absence of inertia. We give analytical formulas for sedimenting spheres, obtained by means of the reciprocal theorem, and demonstrate quantitively differences in comparison to a Newtonian fluid. We also calculate the first correction to the suspension viscosity, the Einstein viscosity, for a dilute suspension of spheres in a weakly shear-thinning fluid.
In the turbulent boundary layer of multicomponent fluid mixtures, the species-specific mass flux is determined by the combination of turbulent-diffusiophoretic diffusion and diffusion due to gradients in supplementary fields (e.g. temperature). For inert mixtures, a balance must exist between all the diffusive transport mechanisms so that the net diffusive mass flux normal to the wall is zero everywhere. This may require non-constant composition profiles. Implications are discussed, and mathematical modelling is employed to demonstrate how this may affect fluid property profiles, wall heat flu…
Immiscible two-phase flow in porous media with mixed wet conditions was examined using a capillary fiber bundle model, which is analytically solvable, and a dynamic pore network model. The mixed wettability was implemented in the models by allowing each tube or link to have a different wetting angle chosen randomly from a given distribution. Both models showed that mixed wettability can have significant influence on the rheology in terms of the dependence of the global volumetric flow rate on the global pressure drop. In the capillary fiber bundle model, for small pressure drops when only a sm…
The flow through a capillary tube with non-constant radius and where bubbles of yield stress fluid are injected is strongly non-linear. In particular below a finite yield pressure drop, $P_y$, flow is absent, while a singular behaviour is expected above it. In this paper we compute the yield pressure drop statistics and the mean flow rate in two cases: (i) when a single bubble is injected, (ii) when many bubbles are randomly injected in the fluid.
The effect of non-Newtonian rheology, manifested through a viscoelastic linearized Maxwell model, on the time-dependent non-equilibrium concentration fluctuations due to free diffusion as well as thermal diffusion of a species is analyzed theoretically. The non-equilibrium process is quantified through the concentration fluctuation auto-correlation function, also known as the dynamic structure factor. The analysis reveals that the effect of rheology is prominent for both the cases of free diffusion and thermal diffusion at long times where the rheology dictates not only the location of the pea…
The study of flow of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media is very important and serves a wide variety of practical applications in processes such as enhanced oil recovery from underground reservoirs, filtration of polymer solutions and soil remediation through the removal of liquid pollutants. These fluids occur in diverse natural and synthetic forms and can be regarded as the rule rather than the exception. They show very complex strain and time dependent behavior and may have initial yield-stress. Their common feature is that they do not obey the simple Newtonian relation of proportionality …
Single fluid porous medium systems are typically modeled at an averaged length scale termed the macroscale using Darcy's law. Standard approaches for modeling macroscale single fluid phase flow of non-Newtonian fluids extend Darcy's law, using an effective viscosity and assuming that the permeability is invariant. This approach results in a need to determine the effective viscosity for every fluid and flow rate. We use the thermodynamically constrained averaging theory (TCAT) to examine the formulation and closure of a macroscale model for non-Newtonian flow that is consistent with microscale …
The thesis investigates the flow of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media using pore-scale network modeling. Non-Newtonian fluids show very complex time and strain dependent behavior and may have initial yield stress. Their common feature is that they do not obey the simple Newtonian relation of proportionality between stress and rate of deformation. They are generally classified into three main categories: time-independent, time-dependent and viscoelastic. Two three-dimensional networks representing a sand pack and Berea sandstone were used. An iterative numerical technique is used to solve th…
This paper demonstrates a numerical study of heat transfer in a square porous cavity filled with non-Newtonian power-law fluid. A Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has been used to accelerate the numerical simulation, which uses the Multiple-Relaxation-Time (MRT) Lattice Boltzmann Method. A modified power-law model has been employed to characterize the flow of non-Newtonian fluids. The simulations have been conducted for the power-law index $n$ ranging from $(0.6 \leq n \leq 1.0)$, the Darcy number $Da$ ranging from $(10^{-3} \leq Da \leq 10^{-1})$ and the Rayleigh number $Ra$ ranging from $(10^3…
Recent findings of possible applications of bio-friendly synthetic self-phoretic swimmers, have motivated the researchers in investigating the various motion-generating mechanisms to optimize the operating characteristics of the same. In this paper we model the auto-electrophoretic motion of a bimetallic (Au-Pt) spherical swimmer in a non-Newtonian medium. In view of the fact that many bio-fluids closely follow the generalized Newtonian rheology, the rheology of the surrounding swimming medium is considered to follow the Carreau-Yasuda viscosity model. Further to capture the experimentally obs…
Electrokinetic energy conversion provides a scheme for energy harvesting and storage for on-chip applications. However, the major drawback of electrokinetic energy conversion is its low conversion efficiency. Researchers are in a quest to find ways to improve this efficiency. With the same motive, we investigated the generation of streaming potential by applying surface modification and employing a non-Newtonian fluid to flow through the microchannel under constant pressure difference across its ends. Shear-thickening liquids tend to lessen electrokinetic effects, whereas shear-thinning liquid…
We investigate the rheological characteristics of human blood plasma in shear and elongational flows. While we can confirm a Newtonian behavior in shear flow within experimental resolution, we find a viscoelastic behavior of blood plasma in the pure extensional flow of a capillary break-up rheometer. The influence of the viscoelasticity of blood plasma on capillary blood flow is tested in a microfluidic device with a contraction-expansion geometry. Differential pressure measurements revealed that the plasma has a pronounced flow resistance compared to that of pure water. Supplementary measurem…
This study presents a detailed investigation of how the rheological behaviour of fluid could influence the electrokinetic instability (EKI) phenomenon in a microfluidic T-junction. The non-Newtonian power-law model with different values of the power-law index (n) is used to obtain fluids of different rheological behaviours. We find that as the fluid rheological behaviour changes from shear-thickening (n > 1) to shear-thinning (n < 1) via the Newtonian (n = 1) one, the EKI phenomenon is significantly influenced under the same conditions. In particular, the intensity of this EKI phenomenon is fo…
Exact solutions for laminar stratified flows of Newtonian/non-Newtonian shear-thinning fluids in horizontal and inclined channels are presented. An iterative algorithm is proposed to compute the laminar solution for the general case of a Carreau non-Newtonian fluid. The exact solution is used to study the effect of the rheology of the shear-thinning liquid on two-phase flow characteristics considering both gas/liquid and liquid/liquid systems. Concurrent and counter-current inclined systems are investigated, including the mapping of multiple solution boundaries. Aspects relevant to practical a…
We report a local analysis of the flow of foams in two dimensional heterogeneous model porous media. Pressure measurements are combined with direct observation in order to determine simultaneously the effective viscosity and the fraction of trapped gas. Experiments are conducted in the low-quality regime, in a large range of capillary numbers and relative gas flow rates. The effective viscosity is very high (up to a few thousands times that of water) at low capillary numbers and rheology can be described by a decreasing power-law function of the capillary number of exponent ranging from -1 to …
Numerous natural processes are contingent on microorganisms' ability to swim through fluids with non-Newtonian rheology. Here, we use the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans and tracking methods to experimentally investigate the dynamics of undulatory swimming in shear-thinning fluids. Theory and simulation have proposed that the cost of swimming, or mechanical power, should be lower in a shear-thinning fluid compared to a Newtonian fluid of the same zero-shear viscosity. We aim to provide an experimental investigation into the cost of swimming in a shear-thinning fluid from (i) an estimate …
The injection and in-situ generation of foam in porous media successfully control gas mobility and improve the fluids' sweep efficiency inside porous media. Mathematical models describing this problem use two phases, foamed gas and fluid, and usually have a term for foam generation and destruction. Moreover, the non-Newtonian foam behavior is frequently modeled using the Hirasaki and Lawson's formula for foamed gas viscosity. In this paper, we detail how the traveling wave analysis can be used to estimate the propagation profiles and velocity for a range of non-Newtonian foam models in porous …

The study investigates the problem of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) free convection over a non-isothermal axisymmetric body under the action of transverse magnetic field. The body is embedded in a porous medium saturated with electrically conducting non-Newtonian power law fluid. In order to obtain similarity solution, it is assumed that the viscosity of the fluid decays exponentially with temperature. The qualitative results are illustrated for a vertical flat plate, horizontal cylinder and sphere.
The dynamics of thin films on a horizontal solid substrate is investigated in the case of non-Newtonian fluids exhibiting normal stress differences, the rheology of which is strongly non-linear. Two coupled equations of evolution for the thickness of the film and the shear rate are proposed within the lubrication approximation. This framework is applied to the motion of an advancing contact line. The apparent dynamic contact angle is found to depend logarithmically on a lengthscale determined solely by the rheological properties of the fluid and the velocity of the contact line.
The dynamics of a quasi two-dimensional isotropic droplet in a cholesteric liquid crystal medium under symmetric shear flow is studied by lattice Boltzmann simulations. We consider a geometry in which the flow direction is along the axis of the cholesteric, as this setup exhibits a significant viscoelastic response to external stress. We find that the dynamics depends upon the magnitude of the shear rate, the anchoring strength of the liquid crystal at the droplet interface and the chirality. While for low shear rate and weak interface anchoring the system shows a non-Newtonian behavior, a New…
We analyzed the effect of viscoelasticity on the dynamics of fluids in porous media by studying the flow of a Maxwell fluid in a circular tube, in which the flow is induced by a wave traveling on the tube wall. The present study investigates novelties brought about into the classic peristaltic mechanism by inclusion of non-Newtonian effects that are important, for example, for hydrocarbons. This problem has numerous applications in various branches of science, including stimulation of fluid flow in porous media under the effect of elastic waves. We have found that in the extreme non-Newtonian …
We derive analytical expressions for the flow of Newtonian and power law fluids in elastic circularly-symmetric tubes based on a lubrication approximation where the flow velocity profile at each cross section is assumed to have its axially-dependent characteristic shape for the given rheology and cross sectional size. Two pressure-area constitutive elastic relations for the tube elastic response are used in these derivations. We demonstrate the validity of the derived equations by observing qualitatively correct trends in general and quantitatively valid asymptotic convergence to limiting case…
The classical Stokes' problem describing the fluid motion due to a steadily moving infinite wall is revisited in the context of dense granular flows of mono-dispersed beads using the recently proposed $μ(I)$--rheology. In Newtonian fluids, molecular diffusion brings about a self-similar velocity profile and the boundary layer in which the fluid motion takes place increases indefinitely with time $t$ as $\sqrt{νt}$, where $ν$ is the kinematic viscosity. For a dense granular visco-plastic liquid, it is shown that the local shear stress, when properly rescaled, exhibits self-similar behaviour at …
Unlike the power-law model, the Ellis model describes the apparent viscosity of a shear-thinning fluid with no singularity in the limit of a vanishingly small shear stress. In particular, this model matches the Newtonian behaviour when the shear stresses are very small. The emergence of the Rayleigh-Bénard instability is studied when a horizontal pressure gradient, yielding a basic throughflow, is prescribed in a horizontal porous layer. The threshold conditions for the linear instability of this system are obtained both analytically and numerically. In the case of a negligible flow rate, the …
We investigate the flow of various non-Newtonian fluids through three-dimensional disordered porous media by direct numerical simulation of momentum transport and continuity equations. Remarkably, our results for power-law (PL) fluids indicate that the flow, when quantified in terms of a properly modified permeability-like index and Reynolds number, can be successfully described by a single (universal) curve over a broad range of Reynolds conditions and power-law exponents. We also study the flow behavior of Bingham fluids described in terms of the Herschel-Bulkley model. In this case, our sim…
The global static stability of a Starling Resistor conveying non-Newtonian fluid is considered. The Starling Resistor consists of two rigid circular tubes and axisymmetric collapsible tube mounted between them. Upstream and downstream pressures are the boundary condition as well as external to the collapsible tube pressure. Quasi one-dimensional model has been proposed and a boundary value problem in terms of nondimensional parameters obtained. Nonuniqueness of the boundary value problem is regarded as static instability. The analytical condition of instability which defines a surface in param…
Flows in porous media in the low Reynolds number regime are often modeled by the Brinkman equations. Analytical solutions to these equations are limited to standard geometries. Finite volume or element schemes can be used in more complicated geometries, but become cumbersome when there are moving boundaries that require frequent remeshing of the domain. In Newtonian fluids, the method of regularized Stokeselets has gained popularity due to its ease of implementation, including for moving boundaries, especially for swimming and pumping problems. While the corresponding method of regularized Bri…
The flow of power law fluids, which include shear thinning and shear thickening as well as Newtonian as a special case, in networks of interconnected elastic tubes is investigated using a residual based pore scale network modeling method with the employment of newly derived formulae. Two relations describing the mechanical interaction between the local pressure and local cross sectional area in distensible tubes of elastic nature are considered in the derivation of these formulae. The model can be used to describe shear dependent flows of mainly viscous nature. The behavior of the proposed mod…
In this study, we report the use of digital holography microscopy (DHM) for 3D-resolved flow kinematics and shear rheometry of viscoelastic polymeric fluids. We computationally reconstruct the recorded holograms to visualize the tracer imbued flow volume in microchannels, followed by implementation of particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) to quantitate spatially-resolved velocity fields in 3D. In order to select optimal parameters for DHM-PTV characterization of complex fluids, we studied the effect of hologram recording distance, seeding density and particle size. Using the optimal parameters, …
Many microorganisms find themselves immersed in fluids displaying non-Newtonian rheological properties such as viscoelasticity and shear-thinning viscosity. The effects of viscoelasticity on swimming at low Reynolds numbers have already received considerable attention, but much less is known about swimming in shear-thinning fluids. A general understanding of the fundamental question of how shear-thinning rheology influences swimming still remains elusive. To probe this question further, we study a spherical squirmer in a shear-thinning fluid using a combination of asymptotic analysis and numer…
Present work attempts to identify the roles of flow- and geometric-variables on the scaling factor which is a necessary parameter for modeling the apparent viscosity of non-Newtonian fluid in porous media. While idealizing the porous media microstructure as arrays of circular and square cylinders, present study uses multi-relaxation time lattice Boltzmann method to conduct pore-scale simulation of shear thinning non-Newtonian fluid flow. Variation in the size and inclusion ratio of the solid cylinders generates wide range of porous media with varying porosity and permeability. Present study al…
Considering a granular fluid of inelastic smooth hard spheres we discuss the conditions delineating the rheological regimes comprising Newtonian, Bagnoldian, shear thinning, and shear thickening behavior. Developing a kinetic theory, valid at finite shear rates and densities around the glass transition density, we predict the viscosity and Bagnold coefficient at practically relevant values of the control parameters. The determination of full flow curves relating the shear stress $σ$ to the shear rate $\dotγ$, and predictions of the yield stress complete our discussion of granular rheology deri…
In this paper we outline methods for calculating the pressure field inside flow conduits in the one-dimensional flow models where the pressure is dependent on the axial coordinate only. The investigation is general with regard to the tube mechanical properties (rigid or distensible), and with regard to the cross sectional variation along the tube length (constant or variable). The investigation is also general with respect to the fluid rheology as being Newtonian or non-Newtonian.
In the above paper the author treats the boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting, non-Newtonian fluid along a vertical plate embedded in a Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer porous medium. The fluid is under the action of a constant transverse magnetic field and the radiation is taken into account in the energy equation. The boundary layer equations are transformed into ordinary ones and subsequently are solved numerically. However, there is a fundamental error in this paper which is presented below:
A cutting-edge software is presented to tackle the Newton-Euler equations governing the dynamics of granular flows and dense suspensions in Newtonian fluids. In particular, we propose an implementation of a fixed-radius near neighbours search based on an efficient counting sort algorithm with an improved symmetric search. The adopted search method drastically reduces the computational cost and allows an efficient parallelisation even on a single node through the multi-threading paradigm. Emphasis is also given to the memory efficiency of the code since the history of the contacts among particl…
