For most practical applications in electronic devices, two-dimensional materials should be transferred onto semiconducting or insulating substrates, since they are usually generated on metallic substrates. However, the transfer often leads to wrinkles, damages, contaminations and so on which would destroy the intrinsic properties of samples. Thus, generating two-dimensional materials directly on nonmetallic substrates has been a desirable goal for a long time. Here, via a swarm structure search method and density functional theory, we employed an insulating N-terminated cubic boron nitride(111) surface as a substrate for the generation of silicene. The result shows that the silicene behaves as a ferromagnetic half-metal because of the strong interaction between silicon and surface nitrogen atoms. The magnetic moments are mainly located on surface nitrogen sites without bonding silicon atoms and the value is about 0.12 uB. In spin-up channel, it behaves as a direct band gap semiconductor with a gap of around 1.35 eV, while it exhibits metallic characteristic in spin-down channel, and the half-metallic band gap is about 0.11 eV. Besides, both the magnetic and electronic properties are not sensitive to the external compressive strain. This work maybe open a way for the utility of silicene in spintronic field.
The two-dimensional silicon allotrope, silicene, could spur the development of new and original concepts in Si-based nanotechnology. Up to now silicene can only be epitaxially synthesized on a supporting substrate such as Ag(111). Even though the structural and electronic properties of these epitaxial silicene layers have been intensively studied, very little is known about its vibrational characteristics. Here, we present a detailed study of epitaxial silicene on Ag(111) using \textit{in situ} Raman spectroscopy, which is one of the most extensively employed experimental techniques to charact…
Silicene, a counterpart of graphene, has achieved rapid development due to its exotic electronic properties and excellent compatibility with the mature silicon-based semiconductor technology. Its low room-temperature mobility of about 100 cm2V-1s-1, however, inhibits device applications such as in field-effect transistors. Generally, defects and grain boundaries would act as scattering centers and thus reduce the carrier mobility. In this paper, the morphologies of various point defects in epitaxial silicene on Ag(111) surfaces have been systematically investigated using first-principles calcu…
The origin of the large-scale stripe pattern of epitaxial silicene on the ZrB$_2$(0001) surface observed by scanning tunneling microscope experiments is revealed by first-principles calculations. Without stripes, the ($\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$)-reconstructed, one-atom-thick Si layer is found to exhibit a "zero-frequency" phonon instability at the $M$ point. In order to avoid a divergent response, the relevant phonon mode triggers the spontaneous formation of a new phase with a particular stripe pattern offering a way to lower both the atomic surface density and the total energy of silicene on t…
In this letter, we report that the special coupling between Dirac fermion and lattice vibrations, in other words, electron-phonon coupling (EPC), in silicene layers on Ag(111) surface was probed by an in-situ Raman spectroscopy. We find the EPC is significantly modulated due to tensile strain, which results from the lattice mismatch between silicene and the substrate, and the charge doping from the substrate. The special phonon modes corresponding to two-dimensional electron gas scattering at edge sites in the silicene were identified. Detecting relationship between EPC and Dirac fermion throu…
Graphene, consisting of an inert, thermally stable material with an atomically flat, dangling bond-free surface is by essence an ideal template layer for van der Waals heteroepitaxy of two-dimensional materials such as silicene. However, depending on the synthesis method and growth parameters, graphene (Gr) substrates could exhibit, on a single sample, various surface structures, thicknesses, defects, and step heights. These structures noticeably affect the growth mode of epitaxial layers, e.g. turning the layer-by-layer growth into the Volmer-Weber growth promoted by defect-assisted nucleatio…
Since the discovery of graphene, intensive efforts have been made in search of novel two-dimensional (2D) materials. Decreasing the materials dimensionality to their ultimate thinness is a promising route to unveil new physical phenomena, and potentially improve the performance of devices. Among recent 2D materials, analogs of graphene, the group IV elements have attracted much attention for their unexpected and tunable physical properties. Depending on the growth conditions and substrates, several structures of silicene, germanene, and stanene can be formed. Here, we report the synthesis of a…
Silicene is one of the most promising 2D materials for the realization of next-generation electronic devices, owing to its high carrier mobility and bandgap tunability through the imposition of an external electric field. To exploit this fundamental characteristic, it is necessary to engineer an insulating layer that can be interfaced directly to silicene without perturbing its bidimensional nature. At the same time, this insulating layer should exhibit low leakage currents even when highly scaled, to fully exploit the advantages of using a 2D material at the core of the device. CaF$_2$ is kno…
Using atomic resolved scanning tunneling microscopy, we present here the experimental evidence of a silicene sheet (graphene like structure) epitaxially grown on a close-packed silver surface (Ag(111)). This has been achieved via direct condensation of a silicon atomic flux onto the single-crystal substrate in ultra-high vacuum conditions. A highly ordered silicon structure, arranged within a honeycomb lattice is synthesized and presenting two silicon sub-lattices occupying positions at different heights (0.02 nm) indicating possible sp2-sp3 hybridizations.
Epitaxial silicene, which is one single layer of silicon atoms packed in a honeycomb structure, demonstrates a strong interaction with the substrate that dramatically affects its electronic structure. The role of electronic coupling in the chemical reactivity between the silicene and the substrate is still unclear so far, which is of great importance for functionalization of silicene layers. Here, we report the reconstructions and hybridized electronic structures of epitaxial 4x4 silicene on Ag(111), which are revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectrosc…
The transformation of the stripe domain structure of spontaneously-formed epitaxial silicene on ZrB$_2$ thin film into a single-domain driven by the adsorption of a fraction of a monolayer of silicon was used to investigate how dislocations react and eventually annihilate in a two-dimensional honeycomb structure. The in-situ real time STM monitoring of the evolution of the domain structure after Si deposition revealed the mechanisms leading to the nucleation of a single-domain into a domain structure through a stepwise reaction of partial dislocations. After its nucleation, the single-domain e…
Since the inevitability in experimental synthesis, defects show great importance to many materials. They will deeply regulate the properties of the materials, and then affect the further applications. Thus, exploring the effects of defects on the properties of materials is desired. Here, by using first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the effect of silicon vacancy defects on the properties of silicene generated on Nterminated cubic boron nitride (111) surface. It is found that the introduction of silicon vacancy would trigger transition between half-metal and ferromagnetic se…
Graphene, a flat monolayer of carbon atoms tightly packed into a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice (a one atom thick graphite sheet), is presently the hottest material in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Its challenging hypothetical reflection in the silicon world is coined silicene; Here, we have demonstrated that the silicon nano-wires self-aligned in a massively parallel array recently observed by STM on Ag(110), are true silicene nano-ribbons. Our calculations using density functional theory clearly show that Si atoms tends to form hexagons on top the silver substrate in a honeycomb, graphe…
Recent studies of core-level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra of silicene on ZrB$_2$(0001) were found to be inconsistent with the density of states (DOS) of a planar-like structure that has been proposed as the ground state by density functional theory (DFT). To resolve the discrepancy, a reexamination of the XPS spectra and direct theoretical access of accurate single-particle excitation energies are desired. By analyzing the XPS data using symmetric Voigt functions, different binding energies and its sequence of Si $2p$ orbitals can be assigned from previously reported ones whe…
Silicene, as the silicon analog of graphene, has been successfully fabricated by epitaxial growing on various substrates. Similar to free-standing graphene, free-standing silicene possesses a honeycomb structure and Dirac-cone-shaped energy band, resulting in many fascinating properties such as high carrier mobility, quantum spin Hall effect, quantum anomalous Hall effect, and quantum valley Hall effect. The maintenance of the honeycomb crystal structure and the Dirac cone of silicene is crucial for observation of its intrinsic properties. In this review, we systematically discuss the substrat…
So far, it represents a challenging task to reproduce angle-resolved photoelectron (ARPES) spectra of epitaxial silicene by first-principles calculations. Here, we report on the resolution of the previously controversial issue related to the structural configuration of silicene on the ZrB$_2$(0001) surface and its band structure. In particular, by representing the band structure in a large Brillouin zone associated with a single Si atom, it is found that the imaginary part of the one-particle Green's function follows the spectral weight observed in ARPES spectra. By additionally varying the in…
In this Letter, we demonstrate that it is possible to form a two-dimensional (2D) silicene-like Si$_5$Ge compound by replacing the Si atoms occupying on-top sites in the planar-like structure of epitaxial silicene on ZrB$_2$(0001) by deposited Ge atoms. For coverages below 1/6 ML, the Ge deposition gives rise to a Si$_{6-x}$Ge$_{x}$ alloy (with $x$ between 0 and 1) in which the on-top sites are randomly occupied by Si or Ge atoms. The progressive increase of the valence band maximum with $x$ observed experimentally originates from a selective charge transfer from Ge atoms to Si atoms. These ac…
We propose a powerful method of controlling interaction between silicene and a substrate utilizing quantum size effect, which allows to grow silicene with tailored electronic properties. As an example we consider silicene on ultrathin Pb(111) layers, and demonstrate how the properties of silicene, including the binding energy, and the Dirac bands, can easily be tuned by quantum well states of the substrate. We also discover a novel mechanism of protecting the Dirac electrons from the influence of the substrate. This is associated with special arrangement of a part of Si atoms in silicene. Thes…
The spin-dependent electronic structures of aluminum-(Al) doped zigzag silicene nanoribbons (ZSiNRs) are investigated by first-principles calculations. When ZSiNRs are substitutionally doped by a single Al atom on different sites in every three primitive cells, they become half-metallic in some cases, a property that can be used in spintronic devices. More interestingly, spin-down electrons can be transported at the Fermi energy when the Al atom is placed on the sub-edge site. In contrast, spin-up electrons can be transported at the Fermi energy when the ZSiNRs are doped on sites near their ce…
Absence of the Dirac cone due to a strong band hybridization is revealed to be a common feature for epitaxial silicene on metal substrates according to our first-principles calculations for silicene on Ir, Cu, Mg, Au, Pt, Al, and Ag substrates. The destroyed Dirac cone of silicene, however, can be effectively restored with linear or parabolic dispersion by intercalating alkali metal atoms between silicene and the metal substrates, offering an opportunity to study the intriguing properties of silicene without further transfer of silicene from the metal substrates.
Silicene, the two-dimensional allotrope of silicon, is predicted to exist in a low-buckled honeycomb lattice, characterized by semimetallic electronic bands with graphenelike energy-momentum dispersions around the Fermi level (represented by touching Dirac cones). Single layers of silicene are mostly synthesized by depositing silicon on top of silver, where, however, the different phases observed to date are so strongly hybridized with the substrate that not only the Dirac cones, but also the whole valence and conduction states of ideal silicene appear to be lost. Here, we provide evidence tha…
By using first-principles calculations, we predict that an in-plane homogenous electrical field can induce half-metallicity in hydrogen-terminated zigzag silicene and germanene nanoribbons (ZSiNRs and ZGeNRs). A dual-gated finite ZSiNR device reveals a nearly perfect spin-filter efficiency of up to 99% while a quadruple-gated finite ZSiNR device serves as an effective spin field effect transistor (FET) with an on/off current ratio of over 100 from ab initio quantum transport simulation. This discovery opens up novel prospect of silicene and germanene in spintronics.
The stability and electronic structure of competing silicene phases under in-plane compressive stress, either free-standing or on the ZrB$_2$(0001) surface, has been studied by first-principles calculations. A particular ($\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$)-reconstructed structural modification was found to be stable on the ZrB$_2$(0001) surface under epitaxial conditions. In contrast to the planar and buckled forms of free-standing silicene, in this "planar-like" phase, all but one of the Si atoms per hexagon reside in a single plane. While without substrate, for a wide range of strain, this phase is e…
Density functional theory with local density approximation for exchange and correlation functional is used to tune the electronic band structure of silicene monolayer. The cohesive energy of free standing monolayer is increasing (decreasing) with external electric field (distortion). Electrons in silicene behave like Dirac fermions, when the bond angle between the Si atoms is larger than $\sim 102^{0}$. Large distortions destroy the electronic structure of silicene and silicene is no longer a semi-metallic material, and the distorted silicene acts like an $n$-doped system. Electric field opens…
We have carried out first-principles based DFT calculation on electronic properties of silicene monolayer on various (111) semi-conducting surfaces. We find that the relative stability and other properties of the silicene overlayer depends sensitively on whether the interacting top layer of the substrate is metal or non-metal terminated. The nature of silicene-monolayer on the metal termi- nated surface can be metallic or even magnetic, depending upon the choice of the substrate. The silicene overlayer undergoes n-type doping on metal terminated surface while it undergoes p-type doping on non …
Mechanical control of electronic and magnetic properties of 2D Van-der-Waals heterostructures gives new possibilities for further development of spintronics and information-related technologies. Using the density functional theory, we investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of silicene monolayer with substituted Chromium atoms and under a small biaxial strain ($-6\%< ε< 8\%$). Our results indicate that the Cr-doped silicene nanosheets without strain have magnetic metallic, half-metallic or semiconducting properties depending on the type of substitution. We also show tha…
Using density functional theory calculations, we investigated the properties of few-layer silicene nanosheets, namely bilayers and trilayers, functionalized with group-III or group-V atoms of the periodic table. We considered the Si$_2$X$_2$ bilayers and the Si$_2$X$_4$ trilayers, X = B, N, Al, P. We computed the structural, energetic, dynamic, elastic, and electronic properties of those systems in several stacking configurations, labeled as AA$'$, AB, AA$'$A$''$, and ABC. The results revealed that AA$'$-Si$_2$N$_2$, AB-Si$_2$N$_2$, AA$'$-Si$_2$P$_2$, AB-Si$_2$P$_2$, ABC-Si$_4$B$_2$, ABC-Si$_4…
Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the chemical functionalization of a graphene-like monolayer of silicon - silicene - with B, N, Al or P atoms. The structural, electronic, magnetic and vibrational properties are reported. The most preferable adsorption sites are found to be valley, bridge, valley and hill site for B, N, Al and P adatoms, respectively. All the relaxed systems with adsorbed/substituted atoms exhibit metallic behaviour with strongly bonded B, N, Al, and P atoms accompanied by an appreciable electron transfer from si…
Two dimensional allotropes of group IV substrates including silicene, germanene and stanene have recently attracted considerable attention in nanodevice fabrication industry. These materials involving the buckled structure have been experimentally fabricated lately. In this study, first principles density functional theory calculations were utilized to investigate the mechanical properties of single layer and free standing silicene, germanene and stanene. Uniaxial tensile and compressive simulations were carried out to probe and compare stress strain properties; such as the Young modulus, Pois…
By using first-principles calculations, the electronic structure of planar and strained in-plane graphene/silicene heterostructure is studied. The heterostructure is found to be metallic in a strain range from -7% (compression) to +7% (tension). The effect of compressive/tensile strain on the chemical activity of the in-plane graphene/silicene heterostructure is examined by studying its interaction with the H2O molecule. It shows that compressive/tensile strain is able to increase the binding energy of H2O compared with the adsorption on a planar surface, and the charge transfer between the wa…
We demonstrate high-quality epitaxial germanium (Ge) films on a metallic silicide, Fe3Si, grown directly on a Ge(111) substrate. Using molecular beam epitaxy techniques, we can obtain an artificially controlled arrangement of silicon (Si) or iron (Fe) atoms at the surface on Fe3Si(111). The Si-terminated Fe3Si(111) surface enables us to grow two-dimensional epitaxial Ge films, whereas the Fe-terminated one causes the three-dimensional epitaxial growth of Ge films. The high-quality Ge grown on the Si-terminated surface has almost no strain, meaning that the Ge films are not grown on the low-tem…
We study silicene on hexagonal boron nitride, using first principles calculations. Since hexagonal boron nitride is semiconducting, the interaction with silicene is weaker than for metallic substrates. It therefore is possible to open a 50 meV band gap in the silicene. We further address the effect of Mn decoration by determining the onsite Hubbard interaction parameter, which turns out to differ significantly for decoration at the top and hollow sites. The induced magnetism in the system is analyzed in detail.
The newly observed ($\sqrt3$$\times$$\sqrt3$) surface reconstruction in heteroepitaxial Si(111) thin films on metal substrates is widely considered as a promising platform to realize 2D Dirac and topological states, yet its formation mechanism and structural stability are poorly understood, leading to the controversial terminology of "multilayer silicene". Based on valence bond and conjugation theory, we propose a π-conjugation plus charge-transfer model to elucidate such a unique "bamboo hat" surface geometry. The formation of planar ring-shaped π-conjugation and charge transfer from the ring…
Using first principle calculations, we study the structural, optical and electronic properties of two-dimensional silicene-like structures of CSi7 (carbosilicene) and GeSi7 (germasilicene) monolayers. We show that both CSi7 and GeSi7 monolayers have different buckling that promises a new way to control the buckling in silicene-like structures. Carbon impurity decreases the silicene buckling, whereas germanium impurity increases it. The CSi7 has semiconducting properties with 0.25 eV indirect band gap, but GeSi7 is a semimetal. Also, under uniaxial tensile strain, the semiconducting properties …
Ultrathin semiconductors present various novel electronic properties. The first experimental realized two-dimensional (2D) material is graphene. Searching 2D materials with heavy elements bring the attention to Si, Ge and Sn. 2D buckled Si-based silicene was realized by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth1,2. Ge-based germanene was realized by mechanical exfoliation3. Sn-based stanene has its unique properties. Stanene and its derivatives can be 2D topological insulators (TI) with a very large band gap as proposed by first-principles calculations4, or can support enhanced thermoelectric perfor…
Despite the low resistivity (~ 1 mohm cm), the metallic electrical transport has not been commonly observed in the inverse spinel NiCo2O4, except in certain epitaxial thin films. Previous studies have stressed the effect of valence mixing and degree of spinel inversion on the electric conduction of NiCo2O4 films. In this work, we have studied the effect of microstructure by comparing the NiCo2O4 epitaxial films grown on MgAl2O4 (111) and on Al2O3 (0001) substrates. Although the optimal growth condition and the magnetic properties are similar for the NiCo2O4/MgAl2O4 and the NiCo2O4/Al2O3, they …
The physical properties of manganites depend strongly on sample morphology, probably due to strain. We investigate the influence of NdGaO3 substrates on the limit of the ferromagnetic-metallic phase field in La1-xCaxMnO3, doping with x=1% resolution. Films with x=0.40 show a metal-insulator transition, but the ferromagnetic volume fraction is half the spin aligned value. Films with x=0.41 are similar but the metal-insulator transition is not always seen. Films with x=0.42, 0.43, 0.44, 0.45 are insulating, and the magnetization is dramatically reduced. The observed phase boundary indicates wher…
Single-crystal Heusler atomic-scale superlattices that have been predicted to exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and half-metallicity have been successfully grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Superlattices consisting of full-Heusler Co$_2$MnAl and Fe$_2$MnAl with one to three unit cell periodicity were grown on GaAs (001), MgO (001), and Cr (001)/MgO (001). Electron energy loss spectroscopy maps confirmed clearly segregated epitaxial Heusler layers with high cobalt or high iron concentrations for samples grown near room temperature on GaAs (001). Superlattice structures grown with an exce…
Future spintronics requires the realization of thin film of half-metallic ferromagnets having high Curie temperature and 100\% spin polarization at the Fermi level for potential spintronics applications. In this paper, we report the epitaxial thin films growth of half-metallic CoFeMnGe Heusler alloy on MgO (001) substrate using pulsed laser deposition system, along with the study of structural, magnetic and transport properties. The magnetic property measurements of the thin film suggest a soft ferromagnetic state at room temperature with an in-plane magnetic anisotropy and a Curie temperature…
The interaction of silicene with Si, C, H, O, Ti atoms along with H$_2$, H$_2$O and O$_2$ molecules are investigated and the induced functionalities thereof are analyzed using first principles density functional theory. Si adatom initially adsorbed at the top site of silicene pushes down the Si atom underneath to form a dumbbell like structure with 3+1 coordination. This prediction is important for silicene research and reveal new physical phenomena related with the formation of multilayer Si, which is apparently the precursor state for missing layered structure of silicon. We found that dumbb…
The electronic structure and conductance of substitutionally edge-doped zigzag silicene nanoribbons (ZSiNRs) are investigated using the nonequilibrium Green's function method combined with the density functional theory. Two-probe systems of ZSiNRs in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states are considered. Doping effects of elements from groups III and V, in a parallel or antiparallel magnetic configuration of the two electrodes, are discussed. Switching on and off the external magnetic field, we may convert the metallic ferromagnetic ZSiNRs into insulating antiferromagnetic ZSiNRs. In …

The interaction of graphene with metallic substrates reveals phenomena and properties of great relevance for applications in nanotechnology. In this review, the vibrational characterization by means of various inelastic scattering spectroscopies are surveyed for graphene epitaxially grown on metals and transition carbides. In particular, the manifestations of electron-phonon interaction, such as Kohn anomalies, the evaluation of elastic properties and the nanoscale control of phonon modes are presented and discussed.
We have performed bulk-sensitive spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in order to clarify the intrinsic spin-resolved electronic states of half-metallic ferromagnet CrO2. We used CrO2 epitaxial films on TiO2(100), which shows a peak at 1 eV with a clear Fermi edge, consistent with the bulk-sensitive PES spectrum for CrO2. In spin-resolved spectra at 40 K, while the Fermi edge was observed in the spin up (majority spin) state, no states at the Fermi level (EF) with an energy gap of 0.5 eV below EF was observed in the spin down (minority spin) state. At 300 K, the gap in the spin down state …
We present an orbital-resolved density functional theory study on the electronic properties of hydrogen and lithium intercalated graphene grown on the Si face of SiC. Starting from the $(6\sqrt3\times6\sqrt3)R30^{\circ}$ surface reconstruction of the graphene/SiC heterosystem, we find that both H and Li can restore the ideal structural characteristics of the two nonequivalent junction parts (i.e. graphene and the SiC substrate) when inserted at the interface. However, the chemical/electrostatic interactions remain different for the two cases. Hence, H-intercalated epitaxial graphene is subject…
In this paper we report the observation of curent induced change of resistance of thin metallic oxide films. The resistance changes at a very low current (current density $J \geq 10^{3}$ A/cm$^{2}$). We find that the time dependence associated with the processes (increase of resistance) show a streched exponential type dependence at lower temperature, which crosses over to a creep type behavior at $T \geq$ 350 K. The time scale associated shows a drastic drop in the magnitude at $T \approx$ 350 K, where a long range diffusion sets in increasing the conductivity noise. The phenomena is like a "…
We report first-principles calculations of zinc-blende half-metals, identifying systems for epitaxial growth with semiconductors, and present calculations for CrAs/GaAs multilayers. We find that half-metallicity is conserved troughout the heterostructure, making this a good candidate for spintronics applications.
The need for spin-injectors having the same zincblende-type crystal structure as conventional semiconductor substrates has created significant interests in theoretical predictions of possible metastable ``half-metallic'' zincblende ferromagnets, which are normally more stable in other structure-types, e.g., NiAs. Such predictions were based in the past on differences $Δ_{\rm bulk}$ in the total-energies of the respective {\em bulk} crystal forms (zincblende and NiAs). We show here that the appropriate criterion is comparing difference $Δ_{\rm epi}(a_s)$ in {\em epitaxial} total-energies. This …
Epitaxial films including bulk-like cubic and wurtzite polymorphs of MnSb have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs via careful control of the Sb4/Mn flux ratio. Nonzero-temperature density functional theory was used to predict ab initio the spin polarization as a function of reduced magnetization for the half-metals NiMnSb and cubic MnSb. In both cases, half-metallicity is lost at a threshold magnetization reduction, corresponding to a temperature T*< Tc. This threshold is far higher for cubic MnSb compared to NiMnSb and corresponds to T* > 350K, making epitaxial cubic MnSb a promisin…
Recent progress in growth and characterization of thin-film VO$_2$ has shown its electronic properties can be significantly modulated by epitaxial matching. To throw new light on the concept of `Mott engineering', we develop a symmetry-consistent approach to treat structural distortions and electronic correlations in epitaxial VO$_2$ films under strain, and compare our design with direct experimental probes. We find strong evidence for the emergence of correlation-driven charge order deep in the metallic phase, and our results indicate that exotic phases of VO$_2$ can be controlled with epitax…
We report the epitaxial growth and the electrical properties, especially the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT), of vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films synthesized on LSAT (111) ([LaAlO3]0.3[Sr2AlTaO6]0.7) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction studies show that the epitaxial relationship between the VO2 thin films and LSAT substrate is given as VO2(020)||LSAT(111) and VO2[001]||LSAT[11-2]. We observed a sharp four orders of magnitude change in the longitudinal resistance for the VO2 thin films around the transition temperature. We also measured distinct Raman spectra below an…
Epitaxial strain has been shown to drive structural phase transitions along with novel functionalities in perovskite-based thin-films. Aliovalent doping at the A-site can drive an insulator-to-metal and magnetic transitions in perovskites along with a variety of interesting structural and electronic phenomena. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate here, how coupling epitaxial strain with A-site hole doping in a multiferroic double perovskite, Bi2FeCrO6, could lead to mitigation of issues related to anti-site defects and lowered magnetisation in thin-films of the material. We also…
We report on the epitaxial growth, structural and electrical properties of metallic pyrochlore bismuth ruthenate heterostructures grown along both the [001] and [111] directions. Ordered pyrochlore thin films were obtained with highly oriented texture along the [001] and [111] crystallographic directions. Density functional theory calculations of the electronic band structure and density of states indicated that Bi$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$ is semimetallic and that hybridization of the Ru 4$d$ and Bi 6$p$ orbitals via the anion network at the Fermi energy was responsible for the metallicity. Electrical c…
We investigated systematic evolutions of structural and electronic properties of LixWO3 films, induced by Li-ion electrochemical reactions. Chronoamperometric Li-ion intercalation could control the amount of Li content up to x ~ 0.5. The resistivity abruptly decreased with increasing x and the films underwent an insulator to metal transition (IMT) within a range of 0.2 < x < 0.24, which was consistent with IMT of cubic NaxWO3. The X-ray diffraction analyses revealed the coexistence of tetragonal and cubic phases across IMT, suggesting that the alkaline-ion content was a primary factor for meta…
In the perovskite oxide SrCrO$_{3}$ the interplay between crystal structure, strain and orbital ordering enables a transition from a metallic to an insulating electronic structure under certain conditions. We identified a narrow window of oxygen partial pressure in which highly strained SrCrO$_{3}$ thin films can be grown using radio-frequency (RF) off-axis magnetron sputtering on three different substrates, (LaAlO$_{3}$)$_{0.3}$-(Sr$_{2}$TaAlO$_{6}$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT), SrTiO$_{3}$ (STO) and DyScO$_{3}$ (DSO). X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy confirmed the quality of the films and a …
