Graphene, a flat monolayer of carbon atoms tightly packed into a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice (a one atom thick graphite sheet), is presently the hottest material in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Its challenging hypothetical reflection in the silicon world is coined silicene; Here, we have demonstrated that the silicon nano-wires self-aligned in a massively parallel array recently observed by STM on Ag(110), are true silicene nano-ribbons. Our calculations using density functional theory clearly show that Si atoms tends to form hexagons on top the silver substrate in a honeycomb, graphene-like arrangement.
The mechanical response of graphene nano-ribbon under tensile loading has been investigated using atomistic simulation. Lattice symmetry dependence of elastic properties are found, which fits prediction from Cauchy-Born rule well. Concurrent brittle and ductile behaviors are observed in the failure process at elastic limit, which dominates at low and high temperature respectively. In addition, the free edges of finite width ribbon help to activate bond-flip events and initialize ductile behavior.
Graphene electronics has motivated much of graphene science for the past decade. A primary goal was to develop high mobility semiconducting graphene with a band gap that is large enough for high performance applications. Graphene ribbons were thought to be semiconductors with these properties, however efforts to produce ribbons with useful bandgaps and high mobility has had limited success. We show here that high quality epitaxial graphene nanoribbons 40 nm in width, with annealed edges, grown on sidewall SiC are not semiconductors, but single channel room temperature ballistic conductors for …
The paper deals with the fabrication of nano-shells from pre-stressed nano-plates release. Due to geometrical and technological restrictions we have to cover a given surface with three-dimensional thin ribbons. We discuss the key role of the geodesic curvature in the design of such shell-ribbons. We show that including small-strains but large rotations we are able to control the metric tensor of both Lagrangian and Eulerian ribbons by an appropriate choice of the width and thickness of the ribbons. Moreover, the Green-Lagrange strain tensor is controlled by the distance between the curvature o…
Using a first principles density functional electronic structure method, we study the energy gaps and magnetism in bilayer graphene nanoribbons as a function of the ribbon width and the strength of an external electric field between the layers. We assume AB (Bernal) stacking and consider both armchair and zigzag edges and two edge alignments distinguished by a 60$^o$ rotation of one layer with respect to the other. Armchair ribbons exhibit three classes of bilayer gaps which decrease with increasing ribbon width. An external electric field between the layers increases the gap in narrow ribbons…
Graphene nanoribbons with sub-nanometer widths are extremely interesting for nanoscale electronics and devices as they combine the unusual transport properties of graphene with the opening of a band gap due to quantum confinement in the lateral dimension. Strong research efforts are presently paid to grow such nanoribbons. Here we show the synthesis of 6- and 7-armchair graphene nanoribbons, with widths of 0.61 and 0.74 nm, and excitonic gaps of 1.83 and 2.18 eV, by high-temperature vacuum annealing of ferrocene molecules inside single-walled carbon nanotubes. The encapsulation of the so-obtai…
Interest in epitaxial ferroelectric nanoislands was growing rapidly in recent years driven by their potential for devices, especially ultradense memories. Recent advances in the "bottom- up" (self-assembly) nanometer scale techniques have opened up the opportunities of fabricating high-quality epitaxial ferroelectric nanoislands with extremely small thickness and lateral size on the order of 1 nm and 20 nm, respectively. On the other hand, recent emergence of powerful probes, such as piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), has enabled imaging of a local domain structure with sub-10 nm resolution…
Using first-principles computations, we study the effect of epitaxial strains on electronic structure variations across ZnSe/ZnTe nano-heterostructures. Epitaxial strains of various types are modeled using pseudomorphic ZnSe/ZnTe heterostructures. We find that a wide range of band gaps (spanning the visible solar spectrum) and band offsets (0-1.5 eV) is accessible across the heterostructures in a controllable manner via reasonable levels of epitaxial strain. In addition to quantum confinement effects, strain in ZnSe/ZnTe heterostructures may thus be viewed as a powerful degree of freedom that …
We have fabricated graphene nano-ribbon field-effect transistor devices and investigated their electrical properties as a function of ribbon width. Our experiments show that the resistivity of a ribbon increases as its width decreases, indicating the impact of edge states. Analysis of temperature dependent measurements suggests a finite quantum confinement gap opening in narrow ribbons. The electrical current noise of the graphene ribbon devices at low frequency is found to be dominated by the 1/f noise.
In this work, fundamental results for carrier statistics in graphene 2-dimensional sheets and nanoscale ribbons are derived. Though the behavior of intrinsic carrier densities in 2d graphene sheets is found to differ drastically from traditional semiconductors, very narrow (sub-10 nm) ribbons are found to be similar to traditional narrow-gap semiconductors. The quantum capacitance, an important parameter in the electrostatic design of devices, is derived for both 2d graphene sheets and nanoribbons.
Graphene nano-ribbons junctions based electronic devices are proposed in this Letter. Non-equilibrium Green function calculations show that nano-ribbon junctions tailored from single layer graphene with different edge shape and width can act as metal-semiconductor junctions and quantum dots can be implemented. In virtue of the possibilities of patterning monolayer graphene down to atomic precision, these structures, quite different from the previously reported two-dimensional bulk graphene or carbon nanotube devices, are expected to be used as the building blocks of the future nano-electronics…
We analyze the morphological stability against azimuthal, axial, and general helical perturbations for epitaxial core-shell nanowires in the growth regimes limited by either surface diffusion or evaporation-condensation surface kinetics. For both regimes, we find that geometric parameters (i.e., core radius and shell thickness) play a central role in determining whether the nanowire remains cylindrical or its shell breaks up into epitaxial islands similar to those observed during Stranski-Krastanow growth in thin epilayers. The combination of small cores and rapid growth of the shell emerge as…
First-principles and semi-empirical tight binding calculations were performed to understand the adsorption of oxygen on the surface of two dimensional (2D) and zigzag stanene nano-ribbons. The intrinsic spin-orbit interaction is considered in the Kane-Mele tight binding model. The adsorption of an oxygen atom or molecule on the 2D stanene opens an electronic energy band gap. We investigate the helical edge states and topological phase in the pure zigzag stanene nano-ribbons. The adsorption of oxygen atoms on the zigzag stanene nano-ribbons deforms the helical edge states at the Fermi level whi…
Intrinsic catalytic process by capillary condensation of Ga-atoms into nanotrenches, formed among impinging islands during the wurzite-GaN thin film deposition, is shown to be an effective path to growing GaN nanorods without metal catalysts. The nano-capillary brings within it a huge imbalance in equilibrium partial pressure of Ga relative to the growth ambient. GaN nanorods thus always grow out of a holding nanotrench and conform to the boundaries of surrounding islands. The nanorods are epitaxially orientated with <0001>GaN // <111>Si and <2110>GaN // <110>Si similar to the matrix. Concaved…
The use and the study of semi-insulating layers on metals and semiconductors surfaces have found continuous interest in the past decades. So far, the control of the sizes and growth location of the insulating islands on the substrate is either ill-defined or usually constrained to the use of evaporation masks which size can easily exceed tenth of nanometers. Here, we show that it is possible to grow self-organized periodically spaced thin ribbons of semi-insulating stripes on the bare Si(100) surface. The epitaxial growth of these structures is obtained by the evaporation of CaF$_2$ molecules …
The different mechanisms involved in the alloying of epitaxial nanocrystals are reported in this letter. Intermixing during growth, surface diffusion and intra-island diffusion were investigated by varying the growth conditions and annealing environments during chemical vapor deposition. The relative importance of each mechanism was evaluated in determining a particular composition profile for dome-shaped Ge:Si (001) islands. For samples grown at a faster rate, intermixing during growth was reduced. Si surface diffusion dominates during H$_2$ annealing whereas Ge surface diffusion and intra-is…
We report on the oxidation of self-assembled silicene nanoribbons grown on the Ag(110) surface using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and High-Resolution Photoemission Spectroscopy. The results show that silicene nanoribbons present a strong resistance towards oxidation using molecular oxygen. This can be overcome by increasing the electric field in the STM tunnel junction above a threshold of +2.6 V to induce oxygen dissociation and reaction. The higher reactivity of the silicene nanoribbons towards atomic oxygen is observed as expected. The HR-PES confirm these observations: Even at high exposu…
We report a first-principles study of the electronic structure of functionalized graphene nano-ribbon (aGNRs-f) by organic functional group (CH2C6H5) and find that CH2C6H5 functionalized group does not produce any electronic states in the gap and the band gap is direct. By changing both the density of the organic functional group and the width of the aGNRs-f, a band gap tuning exhibits a fine three family behavior through the side effect. Meanwhile, the carriers at conduction band minimum and valence band maximum are located in both CH2C6H5 and aGNR regions when the density of the CH2C6H5 is b…
A simple vapour deposition technique was used to prepare WO3 one-dimensional nanostructures.WO3 is sublimated at a relatively low temperature (550 1C) in air at atmospheric pressure. The sublimated species are condensed on mica substrate at 500 1C.Single crystalline nanorods are grown in epitaxy on the mica surface with a growth axis along [0 1 0] directions and (0 0 1) plane parallel to the substrate.A growth process is proposed in which the formation of a onedimensional tetragonal tungsten bronze as precursor is the determining factor.
The intriguing nano-structural properties of a ZnMnGaO4 film epitaxially grown on MgO (001) substrate have been investigated using synchrotron radiation-based x-ray diffraction. The ZnMnGaO4 film consisted of a self-assembled checkerboard (CB) structure with perfectly aligned and regularly spaced vertical nanorods. The lattice parameters of the orthorhombic and rotated tetragonal phases of the CB structure were analyzed using H-K, H-L, and K-L cross sections of the reciprocal space maps measured around various symmetric and asymmetric reflections of the spinel structure. We demonstrate that th…
We study by density functional and large scale tight-binding transport calculations the electronic structure, magnetism and transport properties of the recently proposed graphene ribbons with edges rolled to form nanotubes. Edges with armchair nanotubes present magnetic moments localized either in the tube or the ribbon and metallic or half-metallic character, depending on the symmetry of the junction. These properties have potential for spin valve and spin filter devices with advantages over other proposed systems. Edges with zigzag nanotubes are either metallic or semiconducting without affe…
BiFeO3 thin films with various thicknesses were grown epitaxially on (001) LaSrAlO4 single crystal substrates using pulsed laser deposition. High resolution x-ray diffraction measurements revealed that a tetragonal-like phase with c-lattice constant ~4.65 Å is stabilized by a large misfit strain. Besides, a rhombohedral-like phase with c-lattice constant ~3.99 Å was also detected at film thickness of ~50 nm and above to relieve large misfit strains. In-plane piezoelectric force microscopy studies showed clear signals and self-assembled nanoscale stripe domain structure for the tetragonal-like …
We show that elongated nanowires can be grown on crystal surfaces by allowing large strained two-dimensional islands to desorb by varying the adatom supersaturation or chemical potential. The width of the wires formed in this process is determined by a competition between the repulsive elastic interactions of the long edges of the wires and the thermodynamic driving force which tends to decrease the distance between these edges. The proposed mechanism allows for control of the wire sizes by changing the growth conditions, in particular, the vapor pressure of the material that is being deposite…
Since graphene nanoribbons are thin and flimsy, they need support. Support gives firm ground for applications, and adhesion holds ribbons flat, although not necessarily straight: ribbons with high aspect ratio are prone to bend. The effects of bending on ribbons' electronic properties, however, are unknown. Therefore, this article examines the electromechanics of planar and gently bent graphene nanoribbons. Simulations with density-functional tight-binding and revised periodic boundary conditions show that gentle bends in armchair ribbons can cause significant widening or narrowing of energy g…
In this paper, heat flux in graphene nano ribbons has been studied by using molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that the heat flux runs preferentially along the direction of decreasing width, which demonstrates significant thermal rectification effect in the asymmetric graphene ribbons. The dependence of rectification ratio on the vertex angle and the length are also discussed. Compared to the carbon nanotube based one-dimensional thermal rectifier, graphene nano ribbons have much higher rectification ratio even in large scale. Our results demonstrate that asymmetric graphene ribbon mi…
Graphene exhibits unconventional two-dimensional electronic properties resulting from the symmetry of its quasiparticles, which leads to the concepts of pseudospin and electronic chirality. Here we report that scanning tunneling microscopy can be used to probe these unique symmetry properties at the nanometer scale. They are reflected in the quantum interference pattern resulting from elastic scattering off impurities, and they can be directly read from its fast Fourier transform. Our data, complemented by theoretical calculations, demonstrate that the pseudospin and the electronic chirality i…
The field screening effect on the electronic and field-emission properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) has been studied using first-principles calculations. We have systematically investigated the effect of inter-ribbon distance and ribbon width on the work function, field enhancement factor, band gap and edge magnetism of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs). It is found that the work function of ZGNRs increases rapidly as the inter-ribbon distance Dx increases, which is caused by the positive dipole at the edge of the ribbon. For a given Dx, the work function of ZGNRs decreases as …
At B3LYP level of theory, we predict that the half-metallicity in zigzag edge graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) can be realized when an external electric field is applied across the ribbon. The critical electric field to induce the half-metallicity decreases with the increase of the ribbon width. Both the spin polarization and half-metallicity are removed when the edge state electrons fully transferred from one side to the other under very strong electric field. The electric field range under which ZGNR remain half-metallic increases with the ribbon width. Our study demonstrates a rich field-induced …
We demonstrate the preparation of both armchair and zigzag epitaxial graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) on 4H-SiC using a polymer-assisted, sublimation growth method. Historically, the preparation of GNRs depended on the quality, or smoothness, of the surface changes during growth. The physical phenomenon of terrace step formation introduces the risk of GNR deformation along sidewalls, but the risk is heavily mitigated by this polymer-assisted sublimation method. Two widths (100 nm and 50 nm) are examined electrically and optically for both armchair and zigzag GNRs. Our electrical results support the…
We report the growth of high-quality triangular GaN nanomesas, 30-nm thick, on the C-face of 4H-SiC using nano selective area growth (NSAG) with patterned epitaxial graphene grown on SiC as an embedded mask. NSAG alleviates the problems of defective crystals in the heteroepitaxial growth of nitrides, and the high mobility graphene film can readily provide the back low-dissipative electrode in GaN-based optoelectronic devices. The process consists in first growing a 5-8 graphene layers film on the C-face of 4H- SiC by confinement-controlled sublimation of silicon carbide. The graphene film is t…
Graphene's original promise to succeed silicon faltered due to pervasive edge disorder in lithographically patterned deposited graphene and the lack of a new electronics paradigm. Here we demonstrate that the annealed edges in conventionally patterned graphene epitaxially grown on a silicon carbide substrate (epigraphene) are stabilized by the substrate and support a protected edge state. The edge state has a mean free path that is greater than 50 microns, 5000 times greater that the bulk states and involves a theoretically unexpected Majorana-like zero-energy non-degenerate quasiparticle that…
Today graphene nanoribbons and other graphene-based nanostructures can be synthesized with atomic precision. But while investigations have concentrated on straight graphene ribbons of fixed crystal orientation, ribbons with intrinsic curvature have remained mainly unexplored. Here, we investigate electronic transport in intrinsically curved graphene nanoribbons coupled to straight leads, using two computational approaches. Stationary approach shows that while the straight leads govern the conductance gap, the presence of curvature blurs the gap and reduces on-off ratio. An advanced time-depend…
We report on the transport properties of novel carbon nanostructures made of partially unzipped carbon nanotubes, which can be regarded as a seamless junction of a tube and a nanoribbon. We find that graphene nanoribbons act at certain energy ranges as a perfect valley filters for carbon nanotubes, with the maximum possible conductance. Our results show that a partially unzipped carbon nanotube is a magnetoresistive device, with a very large value of the magnetoresistance. We explore the properties of several structures combining nanotubes and graphene nanoribbons, demonstrating that they beha…
Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with widths down to 16 nm have been characterized for their current-carrying capacity. It is found that GNRs exhibit an impressive breakdown current density, on the order of 10^8 A/cm2. The breakdown current density is found to have a reciprocal relationship to GNR resistivity and the data fit points to Joule heating as the likely mechanism of breakdown. The superior current-carrying capacity of GNRs will be valuable for their application in on-chip electrical interconnects. The thermal conductivity of sub-20 nm graphene ribbons is found to be more than 1000 W/m-K.
Strain engineering has attracted great attention, particularly for epitaxial films grown on a different substrate. Residual strains of SiC have been widely employed to form ultra-high frequency and high Q factor resonators. However, to date the highest residual strain of SiC was reported to be limited to approximately 0.6%. Large strains induced into SiC could lead to several interesting physical phenomena, as well as significant improvement of resonant frequencies. We report an unprecedented nano strain-amplifier structure with an ultra-high residual strain up to 8% utilizing the natural resi…
Using first-principles density-functional theory, we study the electronic structure of multilayer graphene nanoribbons as a function of the ribbon width and the external electric field, applied perpendicular to the ribbon layers. We consider two types of edges (armchair and zigzag), each with two edge alignments (referred to as alpha- and beta-alignments). We show that, as in monolayer and bilayer armchair nanoribbons, multilayer armchair nanoribbons exhibit three classes of energy gaps which decrease with increasing width. Nonmagnetic multilayer zigzag nanoribbons have band structures that ar…
We perform density functional calculations on one-dimensional zigzag edge graphene nano-ribbons (ZGNRs) of different widths, with and without edge doping including semi-local exchange-correlations. Our study reveals that, although the ground state of edge passivated (with hydrogen) ZGNRs prefers to be anti-ferromagnetic, the doping of both the edges with Boron atoms stabilizes the system in a ferromagnetic ground state. Both the local and semi-local exchange-correlations result in half-metallicity in edge passivated ZGNRs at a finite cross-ribbon electric field. However, the ZGNR with Boron ed…
Phase change memory (PCM) devices are known to reduce in power consumption as the bit volume and contact area of their electrodes are scaled down. Here, we demonstrate two types of low-power PCM devices with lateral graphene ribbon electrodes: one in which the graphene is patterned into narrow nanoribbons and the other where the phase change material is patterned into nanoribbons. The sharp graphene "edge" contacts enable switching with threshold voltages as low as ~3 V, low programming currents (<1 μA SET, <10 μA RESET) and ON/OFF ratios >100. Large-scale fabrication with graphene grown by ch…
In the purpose of expanding the family of two-dimensional materials, we predict the existence of two-dimensional octa-structure of nitrogen group elements that are composed of squares and octagons in first-principle method based on density functional theory (DFT). From our calculations, electronic structures of all monolayers show that they are semiconductors with indirect (N, P, Bi) and direct (As, Sb) band gaps (0.57-2.61eV). Nano-ribbons of three different unpassivated edges and their band structures are also investigated. Because of the reconstruction on the edges and dangling bonds, there…
Zigzag edges of neutral armchair-oriented Graphene Nano-Ribbons show states strongly localized at those edges. They behave as free radicals that can capture electrons during processing, increasing ribbon's stability. Thus, charging and its consequences should be investigated.Total energy calculations of finite ribbons using spin polarized Density Functional Theory (DFT) show that ribbon's charging is feasible. Energies for Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model Hamiltonian are compatible with DFT allowing the study of larger systems. Results for neutral ribbons indicate: i) the fundamental gap of spin…
Based on atomistic simulations, the nonlinear elastic properties of monolayer graphene nanoribbons under quasistatic uniaxial tension are predicted, emphasizing the effect of edge structures (armchair and zigzag, without and with hydrogen passivation). The results of atomistic simulations are interpreted within a theoretical framework of thermodynamics, which enables determination of the nonlinear functions for the strain-dependent edge energy and the hydrogen adsorption energy, for both zigzag and armchair edges. Due to the edge effects, the initial Young's modulus of graphene nanoribbons und…
Hydrogenated graphene, graphane, is studied on oxygen-terminated silicon dioxide substrate using ab initio calculations. A structure with hydrogenation only on one side of the graphene layer is found stable and its hydrogen configurations are presented. Additionally, we form zigzag graphene nanoribbons by selectively removing hydrogens from the epitaxial graphane layer. In these ribbons, the spin degeneracy of the freestanding antiferromagnetic zigzag ribbons is broken, and band gaps of different magnitude emerge for the opposite spin species. This degeneracy breaking is due to a charge imbala…
We consider the electronic and magnetic properties of nanographite ribbon with zigzag edges under the periodic or Moebius boundary conditions. The zigzag nano-graphite ribbons possess edge localized states at the Fermi level which cause a ferrimagnetic spin polarization localized at the edge sites even in the very weak Coulomb interaction. The imposition of the Moebius boundary condition makes the system non-AB-bipartite lattice, and depress the spin polarization, resulting in the formation of a magnetic domain wall. The width of the magnetic domain depends on the Coulomb interaction and narro…
We study the transport properties of graphene nanoribbons of standardized 30 nm width and varying lengths. We find that the extent of the gap observed in transport as a function of Fermi energy in these ribbons (the "transport gap") does not have a strong dependence on ribbon length, while the extent of the gap as a function of source-drain voltage (the "source-drain gap") increases with increasing ribbon length. We anneal the ribbons to reduce the amplitude of the disorder potential, and find that the transport gap both shrinks and moves closer to zero gate voltage. In contrast, annealing doe…
Graphene has many advantageous properties, but its lack of an electronic band gap makes this two dimensional material impractical for many nanoelectronic applications, for example field effect transistors. This problem can be circumvented by opening up a confinement induced gap, through the patterning of graphene into ribbons having widths of a few nanometres. The electronic properties of such ribbons depend on their size and the crystallographic orientation of the ribbon edges. Therefore, etching processes that are able to differentiate between the zigzag and armchair type edge terminations o…
We present electronic structure calculations of few-layer epitaxial graphene nanoribbons on SiC(0001). Trough an atomistic description of the graphene layers and the substrate within the extended Hückel Theory and real/momentum space projections we argue that the role of the heterostructure's interface becomes crucial for the conducting capacity of the studied systems. The key issue arising from this interaction is a Fermi level pinning effect introduced by dangling interface bonds. Such phenomenon is independent from the width of the considered nanostructures, compromising the importance of c…
The monolithic integration of sub-micron quartz structures on silicon substrates is a key issue for the future development of telecommunication to the GHz frequencies. Here we report unprecedented large-scale fabrication of ordered arrays of piezoelectric epitaxial quartz nanostructures on silicon substrates by the combination of soft-chemistry and three cost effective lithographic techniques: (i) laser transfer lithography, (ii) soft nanoimprint lithography on Sr-doped SiO2 sol-gel thin films and (iii) self-assembled SrCO3 nanoparticles reactive nanomasks. Epitaxial α-quartz nanopillars with …
Quantum size effects in armchair graphene nano-ribbons (AGNR) with hydrogen termination are investigated via density functional theory (DFT) in Kohn-Sham formulation. "Selection rules" will be formulated, that allow to extract (approximately) the electronic structure of the AGNR bands starting from the four graphene dispersion sheets. In analogy with the case of carbon nanotubes, a threefold periodicity of the excitation gap with the ribbon width (N, number of carbon atoms per carbon slice) is predicted that is confirmed by ab initio results. While traditionally such a periodicity would be obs…
Realizing high-performance nanoelectronics requires control of materials at the nanoscale. Methods to produce high quality epitaxial graphene (EG) nanostructures on silicon carbide are known. The next step is to grow Van der Waals semiconductors on top of EG nanostructures. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a wide bandgap semiconductor with a honeycomb lattice structure that matches that of graphene, making it ideally suited for graphene-based nanoelectronics. Here, we describe the preparation and characterization of multilayer h-BN grown epitaxially on EG using a migration-enhanced metalorgan…
We study the band gap of finite $N_A=7$ armchair graphene nanoribbons (7-AGNRs) on Au(111) through scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations. The band gap of 7-AGNRs with lengths of 6 nm and more is converged to within 0.1 eV of its bulk value of 2.3 eV, while the band gap opens by several hundred meV in very short 7-AGNRs. The termination has a significant effect on the band gap, doubly hydrogenated termini yielding a lower band gap than singly hydrogenated ones.
Quasi one-dimensional nanoribbons are excellent candidates for nanoelectronics, therefore here we investigate by means of density functional theory the structure and electronic properties of a new kind of 1D ribbons, namely: centered honeycomb NiSe2 nanoribbons. Depending on the crystallography and atomic composition of the edges, these ribbons can belong to one of six (two) zigzag (armchair) families. In the zigzag families, after edge reconstruction, all the bare ribbons are metallic. The influence of edge hydrogen passivation produces band gaps in two of the six families. For the armchair n…
It is now possible to produce graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with atomically defined widths. GNRs offer many opportunities for electronic devices and composites, if it is possible to establish the link between edge structure and functionalisation, and resultant GNR properties. Switching hydrogen edge termination to larger more complex functional groups such as hydroxyls or thiols induces strain at the ribbon edge. However we show that this strain is then relieved via the formation of static out-of-plane ripples. The resultant ribbons have a significantly reduced Young's Modulus which varies as a …
The epitaxial growth of functional materials using a substrate with a graphene layer is a highly desirable method for improving structural quality and obtaining free-standing epitaxial nano-membranes for scientific study, applications, and economical reuse of substrates. However, the aggressive oxidizing conditions typically employed to grow epitaxial perovskite oxides can damage graphene. Here, we demonstrate a technique based on hybrid molecular beam epitaxy that does not require an independent oxygen source to achieve epitaxial growth of complex oxides without damaging the underlying graphe…
Void defect is a possible origin of ferromagnetic like feature of pure carbon material. Applying density functional theory to void defect induced graphene nano ribbon (GNR), a detailed relationship between multiple spin state and structure change was studied. An equitorial triangle of an initial initial void having six electrons is distorted to isosceles triangle by rebonding carbon atoms. Among possible spin states, the most stable state was Sz=2/2. The case of Sz=4/2 is remarkable that initial flat ribbon turned to three dimentional curled one having highly polarized spin configuration at ri…
We report on the observation of inertial-ballistic transport in nanoscale cross junctions fabricated from epitaxial graphene grown on SiC(0001). Ballistic transport is indicated by a negative bend resistance of R12,43 ~ 170 ohm which is measured in a non-local, four-terminal configuration at 4.2 K and which vanishes as the temperature is increased above 80 K.
We present first-principles calculations of quantum transport in chemically doped graphene nanoribbons with a width of up to 4 nm. The presence of boron and nitrogen impurities is shown to yield resonant backscattering, whose features are strongly dependent on the symmetry and the width of the ribbon, as well as the position of the dopants. Full suppression of backscattering is obtained on the pi-pi* plateau when the impurity preserves the mirror symmetry of armchair ribbons. Further, an unusual acceptor-donor transition is observed in zig-zag ribbons. These unconventional doping effects could…
In this study, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of graphane nanoribbons. We find that zigzag and armchair graphane nanoribbons with H-passivated edges are nonmagnetic semiconductors. While bare armchair ribbons are also nonmagnetic, adjacent dangling bonds of bare zigzag ribbons have antiferromagnetic ordering at the same edge. Band gaps of the H-passivated zigzag and armchair nanoribbons exponentially depend on their width. Detailed analysis of adsorption of C, O, Si, Pt, Ti, V and Fe atoms on the graphane ribbon surface reveal that functionalization of graphane ribbons i…
Incorporation of magnetism in graphene based compounds holds great promise for potential spintronic applications. By optimizing point defects and high edge density of defects, we report many-fold increase in the ferromagnetic saturation moment in lacey reduced graphene oxide nanoribbons (LRGONR) as compared to other graphene derivatives. The samples were synthesized using chemical unzipping methodology. Detailed structural and morphological characterizations are discussed that include XRD, Raman, SEM, HRTEM and XPS measurements. Brilluoin function analysis to magnetization data reflects best f…
We demonstrate that the confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) provides a non-destructive, highly-efficient characterization method for large-area epitaxial graphene and graphene nanostructures on SiC substrates, which can be applied in ambient air without sample preparation and is insusceptible to surface charging or surface contamination. Based on the variation of reflected intensity from regions covered by interfacial layer, single layer, bilayer, or few layer graphene, and through the correlation to the results from Raman spectroscopy and SPM, CLSM images with a high resolution (around …
