A Generative-Adversarial Network (GAN) based on convolutional neural networks is used to simulate the production of pairs of jets at the LHC. The GAN is trained on events generated using MadGraph5 + Pythia8, and Delphes3 fast detector simulation. We demonstrate that a number of kinematic distributions both at Monte Carlo truth level and after the detector simulation can be reproduced by the generator network with a very good level of agreement. The code can be checked out or forked from the publicly accessible online repository https://gitlab.cern.ch/disipio/DiJetGAN .
The dijet signature at the LHC is studied in new physics models for the top forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron. In the t-mediator models, flavor-changing interactions contribute to the dijet production cross section as well as the asymmetry at least at the one-loop level. It is found that the LHC dijet measurements at 36pb^(-1) have constrained the Z' coupling larger than 2.5-3. The sensitivity is expected to be improved significantly as the integrated luminosity increases in the LHC.
We present several strategies for searching for supersymmetry in dijet channels that do not explicitly invoke missing energy. Preliminary investigations suggest that signal-to-background ratios of at least 4--5 should be achievable at the LHC, with discovery possible for squarks as heavy as ~ 1.7 TeV.
We present the calculation of dijet production, doubly-differential in dijet mass, $m_{jj}$ and rapidity difference, $|y^{*}|$, at leading colour in all partonic channels at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. We consider the long-standing problems associated with scale choice for dijet production at next-to-leading order (NLO) and investigate the impact of including the NNLO contribution. We find that the NNLO theory provides reliable predictions, even when using scale choices which display pathological behaviour at NLO. We choose the dijet invariant mass as the theoreti…
We present a state-of-the-art computation for the production of forward dijets in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions at the LHC, in rapidity domains covered by the ATLAS calorimeter and the planned FoCal extension of the ALICE detector. We use the small-x improved TMD (ITMD) formalism, together with collinearly improved TMD gluon distributions and full b-space Sudakov resummation, and discuss nonperturbative corrections due to hadronization and showers using the Pythia event generator. We observe that forward dijets in proton-nucleus collisions at moderately low pT are excellent probes o…
Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors with 1-5 fb^{-1} of data. We find that cuts similar to those employed by CDF are unlikely to confirm its signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrounds at the LHC that can reveal $π_T \rightarrow jj$. We also stress the importance at the LHC of the isospin-related channel $ρ^{\pm}_T \rightarrow Zπ^{\pm}_T \rightarrow \ell\ell…
Both the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations have sought for effects beyond pure next-to-leading order in dijet observables, with the goal to distinguish between the perturbative descriptions provided by a next-to-leading order plus collinear-resummation calculation and by the resummation of wide-angle, hard emissions. In this paper we identify regions of phase space in dijet production where some observables receive large corrections beyond next-to-leading order and study their theoretical description with two tools that perform these two different resummations: the POWHEG BOX and HEJ. Furthermore, …
New strategy for resonance search in dijet events at the LHC is discussed. The main distribution used for a bump search is the dijet invariant mass distribution with appropriated cuts. The crucial cut, which is applied to maximize signal significance, is on (pseudo)rapidity difference between the two jets. This is due to the exponential growing of the QCD background contribution with this variable. Usually it is assumed that signal from almost all exotic models populates the central dijet rapidity region y_{1,2} ~ 0 and |y_1-y_2| ~ 0. By contrast, the excited bosons do not contribute into this…
Experiments at the LHC may yet discover a dijet resonance indicative of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics. In this case, the question becomes: what BSM theories are consistent with the unexpected resonance? One possibility would be a spin-2 object called the colorphilic graviton--a spin-2 color-singlet particle which couples exclusively to the quark and gluon stress-energy tensors. We assess the possibility of this state's discovery in the dijet channel as an s-channel resonance, and report the regions of parameter space where colorphilic gravitons have not yet been excluded by LHC-13 da…
We analyse a combination of ATLAS and CMS searches for dijet resonances at run I and run II, presenting the results in a way that can be easily applied to a generic Z' model. As an illustrative example, we consider a simple model of a Z' coupling to quarks and dark matter. We first study a benchmark case with fixed couplings and then focus on the assumption that the Z' is responsible for setting the dark matter relic abundance. Dijet constraints place significant bounds on this scenario, allowing us to narrow down the allowed range of dark matter masses for given Z' mass and width.
We provide a description, within the High Energy Factorization formalism, of central-forward dijet decorrelation data measured by the CMS experiment and the predictions for nuclear modification ratio~$R_{pA}$ in p+Pb collisions. In our study, we use the unintegrated gluon density derived from the BFKL and BK equations supplemented with subleading corrections and a hard scale dependence. The latter is introduced at the final step of the calculation by reweighting the Monte Carlo generated events using suitable Sudakov form factors, without changing the total cross section. We achieve a good des…
At the LHC the resolution of dijet mass is compromised by the pile up of energy from overlapping minimum bias events. Using anxillary measurements of the jet mass and the energy in distant cones, the resolution can be improved, as illustrated by a study of Z' of 120 GeV mass with the LHC operating at design luminosity.
Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors with 1--20 inverse femtobarns of data. We describe interesting new kinematic tests that can provide independent confirmation of this LSTC hypothesis. We find that cuts similar to those employed by CDF, and recently by ATLAS, cannot confirm the dijet signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrounds at the LHC that may reveal $ρ_…
This paper explores the physics reach of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) for searches of new particles decaying to two jets. We discuss inclusive searches in dijets and b-jets, as well as searches in semi-inclusive events by requiring an additional lepton that increases sensitivity to different aspects of the underlying processes. We discuss the expected exclusion limits for generic models predicting new massive particles that result in resonant structures in the dijet mass. Prospects of the Higher-Energy LHC (HE-LHC) collider are also discussed. The study is based on the Py…
We propose a method to introduce Sudakov effects to the unintegrated gluon density promoting it to be hard scale dependent. The advantage of the approach is that it guarantees that the gluon density is positive definite and that the Sudakov effects cancel on integrated level. As a case study we apply the method to calculate angular correlations and $R_{pA}$ ratio for p+p vs. p+Pb collision in the production of forward-forward dijets.
We present a concise review of the plans of the ATLAS and CMS collaborations to search for new physics using dijet events. The inclusive cross section as a function of jet p$_{T}$, the dijet mass distribution and the dijet ratio's CMS techniques are presented together with their potential of discovery with a focus on the integrated luminosities of 10, 100 and 1000 pb$^{-1}$. Analogously, the inclusive jet and angular distribution searches in the dijet channel from ATLAS are presented together with the potential of discovery given in terms of needed integrated luminosity.
We calculate the cross section of inclusive dijet photoproduction in ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) of heavy ions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider using next-to-leading order perturbative QCD and demonstrate that it provides a good description of the ATLAS data. We study the role of this data in constraining nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) using the Bayesian reweighting technique and find that it can reduce current uncertainties of nPDFs at small $x$ by a factor of 2. We also make predictions for diffractive dijet photoproduction in UPCs and examine its potential to shed ligh…
Using the framework that interpolates between the leading power limit of the Color Glass Condensate and the High Energy (or $k_{T}$) factorization we calculate the direct component of the forward dijet production in ultra-peripheral $\mathrm{Pb}$-$\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions at CM energy $5.1\,\mathrm{TeV}$ per nucleon pair. The formalism is applicable when the average transverse momentum of the dijet system $P_{T}$ is much bigger than the saturation scale $Q_{s}$, $P_{T}\gg Q_{s}$, while the imbalance of the dijet system can be arbitrary. The cross section is uniquely sensitive to the Weizsäcker-…
Dijet azimuthal angle correlation is arguably one of the most direct probes of the medium-induced broadening effects. The evidence for such broadening, however, is not yet clearly observed within the precision of current mid-rapidity measurements at RHIC and the LHC. We show that the dijet correlation in forward rapidity from the future LHC RUN3, aided by forward detector upgrades, can reveal this broadening thanks to the steeper jet spectra, suppressed vacuum radiations and lower underlying event background, with a sensitivity comparable to that of the future high-luminosity Au+Au run at RHIC…
Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors for 8 TeV collisions and 20 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity. We describe interesting new kinematic tests that can provide independent confirmation of this LSTC hypothesis. We show that cuts similar to those employed by CDF, and recently by ATLAS, cannot confirm the dijet signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrou…
We calculate several differential distributions for the production of charm and dijets. Both single-parton scattering (SPS) and double-parton scattering (DPS) contributions are calculated in the $k_T$-factorization approach. The Kimber-Martin-Ryskin unintegrated parton distributions are used in our calculations. Relatively low cuts on jet transverse momenta are imposed to enhance the double-parton scattering mechanism contribution. We find dominance of the DPS contribution over the SPS one. We have found regions of the phase space where the SPS contribution is negligible compared to the DPS co…
We present the exact next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to dijet production at the LHC via quark contact interactions, with different color and chiral structures induced from new physics. Following the recent analysis of quark compositeness search at the LHC, we find that the NLO QCD corrections can lower the dijet cross sections by several tens percent, depending on the theory parameters and the selected kinematic regions, and reduce the dependence of the cross sections on factorization and renormalization scales. We also calculate the renormalization group (RG) improved NLO cross se…
We consider dark sector particles (DSPs) that obtain sizeable interactions with Standard Model fermions from a new mediator. While these particles can avoid observation in direct detection experiments, they are strongly constrained by LHC measurements. We demonstrate that there is an important complementarity between searches for DSP production and searches for the mediator itself, in particular bounds on (broad) dijet resonances. This observation is crucial not only in the case where the DSP is all of the dark matter but whenever - precisely due to its sizeable interactions with the visible s…
We show that the excess events observed in a number of recent LHC resonance searches can be simultaneously explained within a minimal non-supersymmetric left-right inverse seesaw model for neutrino masses with $W_R$ mass around 1.9 TeV. We further show that the minimal TeV-scale particle content that leads to gauge coupling unification in this model predicts $g_R\simeq 0.51$ at the TeV-scale. The extra color-singlet, $SU(2)$-triplet fermions required for unification can be interpreted as the Dark Matter of the Universe. Future measurements of the ratio of same-sign to opposite-sign dilepton ev…
We study the production of two forward jets with a large interval of rapidity at hadron colliders, which was proposed by Mueller and Navelet as a possible test of the high energy dynamics of QCD, within a complete next-to-leading logarithm framework. We show that using the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie procedure to fix the renormalization scale leads to a very good description of the recent CMS data at the LHC for the azimuthal correlations of the jets. We show that the inclusion of next-to-leading order corrections to the jet vertex significantly reduces the importance of energy-momentum non-conse…
We make predictions for the cross sections of diffractive dijet photoproduction in $pp$, $pA$ and $AA$ ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the LHC during Runs 1 and 2 using next-to-leading perturbative QCD. We find that the resulting cross sections are sufficiently large and, compared to lepton-proton scattering at HERA, have an enhanced sensitivity to small observed momentum fractions in the diffractive exchange, commonly denoted $z_{P}^{\rm jets}$, and an unprecedented reach in the invariant mass of the photon-nucleon system $W$. We examine two competing schemes of diffractive QCD factoriza…
Dijet mass distributions can be used to search for spin-0 resonances that couple to two gluons. I show that there is a substantial impact on such searches from the interference between the resonant signal and the continuum QCD background amplitudes. The signal dijet mass distribution is qualitatively modified by this interference, compared to the naive expectation from considering only the pure resonant contribution, even if the total width of the resonance is minimal and very small compared to the experimental dijet mass resolution. The impact becomes more drastic as the total width of the re…
This review discusses the measurements of the inclusive jet and dijet cross section performed by the experimental collaborations at the LHC during what is now being called LHC Run 1 (2009 - 2013). It summarises some of the experimental challenges and the techniques used in the measurements of jets cross sections during the LHC Run 1.
We discuss a test of the CDF dijet anomaly at the LHC. The recent observed dijet mass peak at the CDF is well fitted by a new particle with a mass of around 150 GeV, which decays into two jets. In this paper, we focus on only $Wjj$ signal to avoid model dependence, and comprehensively study the LHC discovery/exclusion reach. We found almost all the models are inconsistent with the result of the LHC, unless only valence quarks contribute the new process. We also discuss further prospects of the LHC search for this anomaly.
We demonstrate that a trigger on hard dijet production at small rapidities allows to establish a quantitative distinction between central and peripheral collisions in pbar-p and p-p collisions at Tevatron and LHC energies. Such a trigger strongly reduces the effective impact parameters as compared to minimum bias events. This happens because the transverse spatial distribution of hard partons (x >~ 10^{-2}) in the proton is considerably narrower than that of soft partons, whose collisions dominate the total cross section. In the central collisions selected by the trigger, most of the partons w…
This paper investigates the collider phenomenolgy of a minimal nonthermal dark matter model with a 1-GeV dark matter candidate, which naturally explain baryongensis. Since the light dark matter is not parity-protected, it can be singly produced at the LHC. This leads to large missing energy associated with an energetic jet whose transverse momentum distribution is featured by a Jacobian-like shape. The monojet, dijet, paired dijet and 2 jets + missing energy channels are studied. Currently existing data at Tevatron and LHC offer significant bounds on our model.
The search at hadron colliders for new massive resonances of a few 100 GeVs that couple effectively to colored states is an extremely challenging issue, due principally to the presence of large QCD multijet backgrounds at this energy, rendering the searches at the LHC particularly difficult. Recently, it was realized that these large backgrounds could be overcome by demanding one high-$p_T$ jet from initial-state radiation (ISR) and by means of novel jet-reconstruction techniques through which the resulting hadronized products of the massive resonances are reconstructed as a fat-jet, a unique …
We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of inclusive dijet photoproduction in ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC and show that the results agree very well with various kinematic distributions measured by the ATLAS collaboration. The effect of including these data in nCTEQ or EPPS16 nuclear parton density functions (nPDFs) is then studied using the Bayesian reweighting technique. For an assumed total error of 5\% on the final data, its inclusion would lead to a significant reduction of the nPDF uncertainties of up to a factor of two at small values of the parton momentum fra…
The new numerical approach that includes 1 to 2 mechanism is applied to double parton scattering (DPS) in W+dijet and Z+dijet final state production in proton-proton collisions at LHC. By using the underlying event (UE) simulation from a pythia 8 tune extracted in hadronic events, we show that, like in the case of a four-jet final state, the inclusion of 1 to 2 mechanism improves the description of experimental data measured at 7 TeV. In addition, predictions for proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV are shown for DPS- and UE-sensitive observables.
Searches for new physics in the single and paired dijet mass spectrum are performed using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a collision energy of sqrt{s}=7 or sqrt{s}=8 TeV. No evidence for new physics is found and upper limits are set for various models. At 95% confidence level, a string resonance in the single dijet spectrum is excluded for masses between 1 and 4.7 TeV and, for the first time, a coloron in the paired dijet spectrum is excluded for masses between 250 and 740 GeV.
Inspired by the recent measurements of the CMS collaboration, we report a QCD study of dijet production in proton+lead collisions at the LHC involving large-transverse-momentum jets, $p_T \gtrsim 100$ GeV. Examining the inherent uncertainties of the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and their sensitivity to the free proton parton distributions (PDFs), we observe a rather small, typically much less than 5% clearance for the shape of the dijet rapidity distribution within approximately 1.5 units around the midrapidity. Even a more stable observable is the ratio between the yiel…
We investigate dijet production from proton-nucleus collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as a means for observing superfast quarks in nuclei with Bjorken $x>1$. Kinematically, superfast quarks can be identified through directly measurable jet kinematics. Dynamically, their description requires understanding several elusive properties of nuclear QCD, such as nuclear forces at very short distances, as well as medium modification of parton distributions in nuclei. In the present work, we develop a model for nuclear parton distributions at large $x$ in which the nuclear dynamics at short …
The differential cross section measurement for dijet production at proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV is presented as a function of an approximation for the fractional momentum loss of the scattered proton ($\tildeξ$), an useful observable to distinguish model predictions of diffractive and nondiffractive components. The data was collected by the CMS detector at low instantaneous luminosity runs at LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.7 {\rm nb}^{-1}$. This is the first observation of single diffractive dijets at LHC.
In this paper we present a detailed comparison of the dijet production by photon -- photon, photon -- pomeron and pomeron -- pomeron interactions in $pp$, $pA$ and ${\rm AA}$ collisions at the LHC energy. The transverse momentum, pseudo -- rapidity and angular dependencies of the cross sections are calculated at LHC energy using the Forward Physics Monte Carlo (FPMC), which allows to obtain realistic predictions for the dijet production with two leading intact hadrons. We obtain that $γ\pom$ channel is dominant at forward rapidities in $pp$ collisions and in the full kinematical range in the n…
Using next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD, we calculate the diffractive contribution to inclusive dijet photoproduction in Pb-Pb ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the LHC and find that it does not exceed $5-10$% in small-$x_A$ bins in the ATLAS kinematics at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV. Its smallness is a result of the restricted kinematics ($p_{T1} > 20$ GeV and $x_A > 0.001$), the large nuclear suppression of nuclear diffractive parton distribution functions predicted in the leading twist model of nuclear shadowing, and additional suppression due to QCD factorization breaking in dif…
Using the ATLAS detector, observations have been made of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of lead-lead events with a per-nucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a minimum bias trigger, jets are reconstructed in fine-grained, longitudinally-segmented electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. The underlying event is measured and subtracted event-by-event, giving estimates of jet transverse energy above the ambient background. The transverse energies of dijets in opposite hemispheres is observed to be…
We consider extensions of the standard model based on open strings ending on D-branes, with gauge bosons due to strings attached to stacks of D-branes and chiral matter due to strings stretching between intersecting D-branes. Assuming that the fundamental string mass scale is in the TeV range and the theory is weakly coupled, we discuss possible signals of string physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In such D-brane constructions, the dominant contributions to full-fledged string amplitudes for all the common QCD parton subprocesses leading to dijets are completely independent of the det…
The development of techniques for identifying hadronic signals from the overwhelming multi-jet backgrounds is an important part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) program. Of prime importance are resonances decaying into a pair of partons, such as the Higgs and $\rm W$/$\rm Z$ bosons, as well as hypothetical new particles. We present a simple observable to help discriminate a dijet resonance from background that is effective even when the decaying resonance is not strongly boosted. We find consistent performance of the observable over a variety of processes and degree of boosts, and show that …
At the LHC the overlap of minimum bias events and the jet energy deposits in a calorimeter causes a degradation in the dijet mass resolution. Guided by QCD, a judicious set of cuts can be developed to mitigate this degradation.
We study the colored resonance production at the LHC in a most general approach. We classify the possible colored resonances based on group theory decomposition, and construct their effective interactions with light partons. The production cross section from annihilation of valence quarks or gluons may be on the order of 400 - 1000 pb at LHC energies for a mass of 1 TeV with nominal couplings, leading to the largest production rates for new physics at the TeV scale, and simplest event topology with dijet final states. We apply the new dijet data from the LHC experiments to put bounds on variou…
The cross section for dijet production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented as a function of xi, a variable that approximates the fractional momentum loss of the scattered proton in single-diffractive events. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 2.7 inverse nanobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at low instantaneous luminosities, and uses events with jet transverse momentum of at least 20 GeV. The dijet cross section results are compared to the predictions of diffractive and nondiffractive models. The low-xi data show a significant contribution from di…
Events containing a pair of high energy hadronic jet can provide clear signatures in the search for new physics at high energy hadron colliders. The ATLAS and CMS experiments collected the data from LHC collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV during 2015 and 2016, looking for evidence of new resonances or deviations from the Standard Model predictions. Althoug no hint of new physics was seen, strong limits have been set on the most interesting benchmark models, improving LHC Run1 reach.
Measurements of dijet azimuthal decorrelations in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC are presented. The analysis is based on an inclusive dijet event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 inverse picobarns. The results are compared to predictions from perturbative QCD calculations and various Monte Carlo event generators. The dijet azimuthal distributions are found to be sensitive to initial-state gluon radiation.
Electrically-neutral massive color-singlet and color-octet vector bosons, which are often predicted in Beyond the Standard Model theories, have the potential to be discovered as dijet resonances at the LHC. A color-singlet resonance that has leptophobic couplings needs further investigation to be distinguished from a color-octet one. In previous work, we introduced a method for discriminating between the two kinds of resonances when their couplings are flavor-universal, using measurements of the dijet resonance mass, total decay width and production cross-section. Here, we describe an extensio…
Low-scale string models, in which the string scale M_s is of the order of TeV with large extra dimensions, can solve the problems of scale hierarchy and non-renormalizable quantum gravity in the standard model. String excited states of the standard model particles are possibly observed as resonances in the dijet invariant mass distribution at the LHC. There are two properties to distinguish whether the resonances are due to low-scale string or some other "new physics". One is a characteristic angular distribution in dijet events at the resonance due to spin degeneracy of string excited states,…
We investigate the bounds which can be placed on generic new-physics contributions to dijet production at the LHC using the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, deriving the first consistently-treated EFT bounds from non-resonant high-energy data. We recast an analysis searching for quark compositeness, equivalent to treating the SM with one higher-dimensional operator as a complete UV model. In order to reach consistent, model-independent EFT conclusions, it is necessary to truncate the EFT effects consistently at order $1/Λ^2$ and to include the possibility of multiple ope…
Dijet angular distributions from the first proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV have been measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The dataset used corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 61 $\pm$ 7 nb$^{-1}$. Comparing the distributions with Monte Carlo based QCD predictions shows good agreement between data and QCD. The distributions are used to set limits on the existence of quark compositeness.
We consider the ATLAS and CMS searches for dijet resonances, as well as the ATLAS search for like-sign dimuon pairs at the LHC with 7 TeV center of mass energy. We interpret their exclusions in terms of bounds on the supersymmetric R-parity violating parameter space. For this we focus on resonant slepton production followed by the corresponding decay.
