The incompressible Euler equations on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ take the form \begin{align*} \partial_t u + \nabla_u u &= - \mathrm{grad}_g p \\ \mathrm{div}_g u &= 0, \end{align*} where $u: [0,T] \to Γ(T M)$ is the velocity field and $p: [0,T] \to C^\infty(M)$ is the pressure field. In this paper we show that if one is permitted to extend the base manifold $M$ by taking an arbitrary warped product with a torus, then the space of solutions to this equation becomes "non-rigid'"in the sense that a non-empty open set of smooth incompressible flows $u: [0,T] \to Γ(T M)$ can be approximated in the smooth topology by (the horizontal component of) a solution to these equations. We view this as further evidence towards the "universal" nature of Euler flows.
The incompressible Euler equations on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ take the form \begin{align*} \partial_t u + \nabla_u u &= - \mathrm{grad}_g p \mathrm{div}_g u &= 0. \end{align*} We show that any quadratic ODE $\partial_t y = B(y,y)$, where $B : {\bf R}^n \times {\bf R}^n \to {\bf R}^n$ is a symmetric bilinear map, can be linearly embedded into the incompressible Euler equations for some manifold $M$ if and only if $B$ obeys the cancellation condition $\langle B(y,y), y \rangle = 0$ for some positive definite inner product $\langle,\rangle$ on $ {\bf R}^n$. This allows one to constr…
Can every measure-valued solution to the compressible Euler equations be approximated by a sequence of weak solutions? We prove that the answer is negative: Generalizing a well-known rigidity result of Ball and James to a more general situation, we construct an explicit measure-valued solution for the compressible Euler equations which can not be generated by a sequence of distributional solutions. We also give an abstract necessary condition for measure-valued solutions to be generated by weak solutions, relying on work of Fonseca and Müller. This difference between weak and measure-valued so…
In this article we construct a compact Riemannian manifold of high dimension on which the time dependent Euler equations are Turing complete. More precisely, the halting of any Turing machine with a given input is equivalent to a certain global solution of the Euler equations entering a certain open set in the space of divergence-free vector fields. In particular, this implies the undecidability of whether a solution to the Euler equations with an initial datum will reach a certain open set or not in the space of divergence-free fields. This result goes one step further in Tao's programme to s…
In this paper, we consider turbulence from a geometric perspective based on the vorticity equations for incompressible viscous fluid flows. We derive several quantitative statements about the statistics of turbulent flows. In particular we establish an entropy decay inequality which involves the turbulent kinetic energy and $L^{1}$-enstrophy, and we identify the small time scale of the vorticity broken down and the vorticity creation under the universality assumption of small time scales of turbulence flows.
We study stationary free boundary configurations of an ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic fluid possessing nested flux surfaces. In 2D simply connected domains, we prove that if the magnetic field and velocity field are never commensurate, the only possible domain for any such equilibria is a disk, and the velocity and magnetic field are circular. We give examples of non-symmetric equilibria occupying a domain of any shape by imposing an external magnetic field generated by a singular current sheet charge distribution (external coils). Some results carry over to 3D axisymmetric solutions…
We prove that, in a two-dimensional strip, a steady flow of an ideal incompressible fluid with no stationary point and tangential boundary conditions is a shear flow. The same conclusion holds for a bounded steady flow in a half-plane. The proofs are based on the study of the geometric properties of the streamlines of the flow and on one-dimensional symmetry results for solutions of some semilinear elliptic equations. Some related rigidity results of independent interest are also shown in n-dimensional slabs in any dimension n.
Measure-valued solutions to fluid equations arise naturally, for instance as vanishing viscosity limits, yet exhibit non-uniqueness to a vast extent. In this paper, we show that some measurevalued solutions to the two-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler equations, although they are energy admissible, can be discarded as unphysical, as they do not arise as vanishing viscosity limits. In fact, these measure-valued solutions also do not arise from a sequence of weak solutions of the Euler equations, in contrast to the incompressible case. Such a phenomenon has already been observed by Chiod…
The Euler-$α$ equations model the averaged motion of an ideal incompressible fluid when filtering over spatial scales smaller than $α$. We show that there exists $β>1$ such that weak solutions to the two and three dimensional Euler-$α$ equations in the class $C^0_t H^β_x$ are not unique and may not conserve the Hamiltonian of the system, thus demonstrating flexibility in this regularity class. The construction utilizes a Nash-style intermittent convex integration scheme. We also formulate an appropriate version of the Onsager conjecture for Euler-$α$, postulating that the threshold between rig…
We consider the Cauchy problem to the two-dimensional incompressible liquid crystal equation and the heat flows of harmonic maps equation. Under a natural geometric angle condition, we give a new proof of the global well-posedness of smooth solutions for a class of large initial data in energy space. This result was originally obtained by Ding-Lin in \cite{DingLin} and Lin-Lin-Wang in \cite{LinLinWang}. Our main technical tool is a rigidity theorem which gives the coercivity of the harmonic energy under certain angle condition. Our proof is based on a frequency localization argument combined w…
The dynamics of an inviscid and incompressible fluid flow on a Riemannian manifold is governed by the Euler equations. In recent papers [5, 6, 7, 8] several unknown facets of the Euler flows have been discovered, including universality properties of the stationary solutions to the Euler equations. The study of these universality features was suggested by Tao as a novel way to address the problem of global existence for Euler and Navier-Stokes [28]. Universality of the Euler equations was proved in [7] for stationary solutions using a contact mirror which reflects a Beltrami flow as a Reeb vect…
The present paper studies the structure of the set of stationary solutions to the incompressible Euler equations on the rotating unit sphere that are near two basic zonal flows: the zonal Rossby-Haurwitz solution of degree 2 and the zonal rigid rotation $Y_1^0$ along the polar axis. We construct a new family of non-zonal steady solutions arbitrarily close in analytic regularity to the second degree zonal Rossby-Haurwitz stream function, for any given rotation of the sphere. This shows that any non-linear inviscid damping to a zonal flow cannot be expected for solutions near this Rossby-Haurwit…
We study the Ricci flow for initial metrics with positive isotropic curvature (strictly PIC for short). In the first part of this paper, we prove new curvature pinching estimates which ensure that blow-up limits are uniformly PIC in all dimensions. Moreover, in dimension $n \geq 12$, we show that blow-up limits are weakly PIC2. This can be viewed as a higher-dimensional version of the fundamental Hamilton-Ivey pinching estimate in dimension $3$. In the second part, we develop a theory of ancient solutions which have bounded curvature; are $κ$-noncollapsed; are weakly PIC2; and are uniformly PI…
