We perform molecular dynamics simulations of ionic liquids confined between graphene walls under a large variety of conditions (pure ionic liquids, mixtures with water and alcohols, mixtures with lithium salts and defective graphene walls). Our results show that the formation of striped and hexagonal patterns in the Stern layer can be considered as a general feature of ionic liquids at electrochemical interfaces, the transition between patterns being controlled by the net balance of charge in the innermost layer of adsorbed molecules. This explains previously reported experimental and computational results and, for the first time, why these pattern changes are triggered by any perturbation of the charge density at the innermost layer of the electric double layer (voltage and composition changes, and vacancies at the electrode walls, among others), which may help tuning electrode-ionic liquid interfaces. Using Monte Carlo simulations we show that such structures can be reproduced by a simple two-dimensional lattice model with only nearest-neighbour interactions, governed by highly screened ionic interactions and short-range and excluded volume interactions. We also show that the results of our simulations are consistent with those inferred from the Landau-Brazovskii theory of pattern formation in self-assembling systems. The presence of these patterns at the ionic liquid graphene-electrode interfaces may have a strong impact on the process of ionic transfer from the bulk mixtures to the electrodes, on the differential capacitance of the electrode-electrolyte double layer or on the rates of redox reactions at the electrodes, among other physicochemical properties, and is therefore an effect of great technological interest.
We compute ionic free energy adsorption profiles at aqueous graphene interface by developing a self-consistent approach. To do so, we design a microscopic model for water and put the liquid on an equal footing with the graphene described by its electronic band structure. By evaluating progressively the electronic/dipolar coupled electrostatic interactions, we show that the coupling level including mutual graphene/water screening permits to recover remarkably the precision of extensive quantum simulations. We further derive the potential of mean force evolution of several alkali cations.
We present an efficient method for simulating Coulomb systems confined by metal electrodes. The approach relies on Green functions techniques to obtain the electrostatic potential for an infinite periodically replicated system. This avoids the use of image charges or an explicit calculation of the induced surface charge, both of which dramatically slows down the simulations. To demonstrate the utility of the new method we use it to obtain the ionic density profiles and the differential capacitances, which are of great practical and heoretical interest, for a lattice model of an ionic liquid.
By reinforcing the interaction energy of the liquid with respect to the surface using total wetting boundary conditions, the response of liquids to mechanical shear stress is stronger and exhibits at sub-millimeter scale elastic properties. This study extends here to liquids with strong electrostatic interactions such as ionic liquids and paramagnetic liquids. We show that it is also possible to identify and measure a non-zero low-frequency shear elasticity at sub-millimeter scale. The observation of mesoscopic elastic properties in liquids generally considered as viscous away from any phase t…
Ionic Liquids (ILs) are organic molten salts characterized by the total absence of solvent. They show remarkable properties: low vapor pressure, high ionic conductivity, high chemical, thermal and electrochemical stability. These electrolytes meet therefore key criteria for the development of safe energy storage systems. Due to a competition between electrostatic and van der Walls interactions, ILs show an uncommon property for neat bulk liquids: they self-organize in transient nanometric domains. In ILs-based electrochemical devices, this fluctuating nano-segregation acts as energy barriers t…
Extracting the sequence information of DNA from the blocked ionic current is the crucial step of the ionic current-based nanopore sequencing approaches. The thinnest graphene nanopore, which contained only one layer of carbon atoms, potentially has ultra-high DNA sequencing sensitivity. However, the dynamical translocation information of DNA contained in the blocked ionic current has not been well understood to date. In this letter, an assessment to the sensitivity of ionic current-based graphene nanopore DNA sensing approach was carried out using molecular dynamics simulations. By filtering t…
This work describes the behaviour of water molecules in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid under nanoconfinement between graphene sheets. By means of molecular dynamics simulations, an adsorption of water molecules at the graphene surface is studied. A depletion of water molecules in the vicinity of the neutral and negatively charged graphene surfaces and their adsorption at the positively charged surface are observed in line with the preferential hydration of the ionic liquid anions. The findings are appropriately described using a two-level statistical model. The conf…
Hypotheses: To correctly predict the aggregation number and size of wormlike micelles from ionic surfactants, the molecular-thermodynamic theory has to calculate the free energy per molecule in the micelle with accuracy better than 0.01 kT, which is a serious challenge. The problem could be solved if the effects of mutual confinement of micelle counterion atmospheres, as well as the effects of counterion binding, surface curvature and ionic interactions in the electric double layer (EDL), are accurately described. Theory: The electric field is calculated using an appropriate cell model, which …
In the present work, we study an electrolyte solution confined between planar surfaces with nonopatterned charged domains, which has been connected to a bulk ionic reservoir. The system is investigated through an improved Monte Carlo (MC) simulation method, suitable for simulation of electrolytes in the presence of modulated surface charge distributions. We also employ a linear approach in the spirit of the classical Debye-Hückel approximation, which allows one to obtain explicit expressions for the averaged potentials, ionic profiles, effective surface interactions and the net ionic charge co…
A theory of a confined two dimensional electrolyte is presented. The positive and negative ions, interacting by a $1/r$ potential, are constrained to move on an interface separating two solvents with dielectric constants $ε_1$ and $ε_2$. It is shown that the Debye-Hückel type of theory predicts that the this 2d Coulomb fluid should undergo a phase separation into a coexisting liquid (high density) and gas (low density) phases. We argue, however, that the formation of polymer-like chains of alternating positive and negative ions can prevent this phase transition from taking place.
Using a variational field theory, we show that an electrolyte confined to a neutral cylindrical nanopore traversing a low dielectric membrane exhibits a first-order ionic liquid-vapor pseudo-phase-transition from an ionic-penetration "liquid" phase to an ionic-exclusion "vapor" phase, controlled by nanopore-modified ionic correlations and dielectric repulsion. For weakly charged nanopores, this pseudotransition survives and may shed light on the mechanism behind the rapid switching of nanopore conductivity observed in experiments.
The ongoing scientific interest in the properties and structure of electric double layers (EDLs) stems from their pivotal role in (super)capacitive energy storage, energy harvesting, and water treatment technologies. Classical density functional theory (DFT) is a promising framework for the study of the in- and out-of-plane structural properties of double layers. Supported by molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate the adequate performance of DFT for analyzing charge layering in the EDL perpendicular to the electrodes. We discuss charge storage and capacitance of the EDL and the impact …
Graphene nanoslit pore is used for nanofluidic devices like water desalination, ion-selective channels, ionic transistors, sensing, molecular sieving, blue energy harvesting, and protein sequencing. It is a strenuous task to prepare nanofluidic devices because a small misalignment leads to a significant alteration in various properties of the devices. Here we focus on the rotational misalignment between two parallel graphene sheets. Using molecular dynamics simulation, we probe the structure and dynamics of monolayer water confined inside graphene nanochannels for a range of commensurate twist…
We use molecular dynamics simulations of the primitive model of electrolytes to study the ionic structure in aqueous monovalent electrolyte solutions confined by charged planar interfaces over a wide range of electrolyte concentration, interfacial separation, surface charge density, and ion size. The investigations are inspired by recent experiments that have directly measured the increase in the decay length for highly-concentrated electrolytes with increase in concentration. The behavior of ions in the nanoconfinement created by the interfaces is probed by evaluating the ionic density profil…
The bulk self diffusion of the ethylammonium cation and the nitrate anion can both be described by respective single diffusion coefficients. Diffusion of the anion is 1.7 times higher than that of the cation. This indicates no tight association of the ions in the ionic liquid. For the ethylammonium cation confined between glass plates the effective diffusion coefficient along, as well as normal to the confining glass plates is higher by a factor of 1.86 as compared to that in the bulk. The same time, NMR T2 relaxation of protons of NH3 group of the EA cation is faster by a factor of 22 than th…
Since the discovery of graphene oxide (GO), the most accessible of the precursors of graphene, this material has been widely studied for applications in science and technology. In this work, we describe a procedure to obtain GO dispersions in water at high concentrations, these highly dehydrated dispersions being in addition fully redispersible by dilution. With the availability of such concentrated samples, it was possible to investigate the structure of hydrated GO sheets in a previously unexplored range of concentrations, and to evidence a structural phase transition. Tentatively applying m…
We present a coarse-grained model for ionic surfactants in explicit aqueous solutions, and study by computer simulation both the impact of water content on the morphology of the system, and the consequent effect of the formed interfaces on the structural features of the adsorbed fluid. On increasing the hydration level at ambient conditions, the model exhibits a series of three distinct phases: lamellar, cylindrical and micellar. We characterize the different structures in terms of diffraction patterns and neutron scattering static structure factors. We demonstrate that the rate of variation o…
The transport of molecules in confined media is subject to entropic barriers. So theoretically, asymmetry of the confinement length may lead to molecular ratchets with entropy as the only driving force for the biased transport. We address experimentally this question by performing alternative ionic current measurements on electrolytes confined in neutral conical nanopores. In case anions and cations widely differ in size, we show that rectification of ionic current can be obtained that depends on ions size and cycle frequency, consistently with the entropic ratchet mechanism.
Water and water-mediated interactions determine thermodynamic and kinetics of protein folding, protein aggregation and self-assembly in confined spaces. To obtain insights into the role of water in the context of folding problems, we describe computer simulations of a few related model systems. The dynamics of collapse of eicosane shows that upon expulsion of water the linear hydrocarbon chain adopts an ordered helical hairpin structure with 1.5 turns. The structure of dimer of eicosane molecules has two well ordered helical hairpins that are stacked perpendicular to each other. As a prelude t…
Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs) are molten salts which exhibit uniques physical and chemical properties, commonly harnessed for lubrication and energy applications. The pure ionic nature of RTIL leads to strong electrostatic interactions among the liquid, furthermore exalted in the presence of interfaces and confinement. In this work, we use a tuning-fork based dynamic Surface Force Tribometer (TF-SFT), which allows probing both the rheological and the tribological properties of RTILs films confined between a millimetric sphere and a surface, over a wide range of confinements. When the …
It is well-known that room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) often adopt a charge-separated layered structure, i.e., with alternating cation- and anion-rich layers, at electrified interfaces. However, the dynamic response of the layered structure to temporal variations in applied potential is not well understood. We used in situ, real-time X-ray reflectivity (XR) to study the potential-dependent electric double layer (EDL) structure of an imidazolium-based RTIL on charged epitaxial graphene during potential cycling as a function of temperature. The results suggest that the graphene-RTIL interf…
We present a molecular dynamics study of the effects of confinement on the lubrication and flow properties of ionic liquids. We use a coarse-grained salt model description of ionic liquid as a lubricant confined between finite solid plates and subjected to two dynamic regimes: shear and cyclic loading. The impact of confinement on the ion arrangement and mechanical response of the system has been studied in detail and compared to static and bulk properties. The results have revealed that the wall slip has a profound influence on the force built--up as a response to mechanical deformation and t…
The extension of DNA confined to nanochannels has been studied intensively and in detail. Yet quantitative comparisons between experiments and model calculations are difficult because most theoretical predictions involve undetermined prefactors, and because the model parameters (contour length, Kuhn length, effective width) are difficult to compute reliably, leading to substantial uncertainties. Here we use a recent asymptotically exact theory for the DNA extension in the "extended de Gennes regime" that allows us to compare experimental results with theory. For this purpose we performed new e…
Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to explore the dynamical crossover phenomenon in strongly confined and mildly supercooled water in graphene oxide nanopores. In contrast to studies where confinement is used to study the properties of bulk water, we are interested in the dynamical transitions for strongly confined water in the absence of any bulk-like water. The influence of the physicochemical nature of the graphene oxide surface on the dynamical transitions is investigated by varying the extent of hydrophobicity on the confining surfaces placed at an inter-surface separation of …
Recent measurements suggest the possibility to exploit ionic liquids (ILs) as smart lubricants for nano-contacts, tuning their tribological and rheological properties by charging the sliding interfaces. Following our earlier theoretical study of charging effects on nanoscale confinement and squeezout of a model IL, we present here molecular dynamics simulations of the frictional and lubrication properties of that model under charging conditions.First we describe the case when two equally charged plates slide while being held together to a confinement distance of a few molecular layers. The shea…
Water inside a nanocapillary becomes ordered, resulting in unconventional behavior. A profound enhancement of water flow inside nanometer thin capillaries made of graphene has been observed [B. Radha et.al., Nature (London) 538, 222 (2016)]. Here we explain this enhancement as due to the large density and the extraordinary viscosity of water inside the graphene nanocapillaries. Using the Hagen-Poiseuille theory with slippage-boundary condition and incorporating disjoining pressure term in combination with results from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we present an analytical theory that el…
A key feature of the crystallization of supercooled water confined in an applied static electric field is that the structural order here is determined not only by usual thermodynamic and kinematic factors (degree of supercooling, difference between chemical potentials for a liquid and a crystal, and viscosity) but also by the strength and direction of the applied electric field, size of a system (size effects), and the geometry of bounding surfaces. In this work, the electrocrystallization of supercooled water confined between ideally flat parallel graphene sheets at a temperature of $T=268$~K…
We study the vapour-liquid phase behaviour of an ionic fluid confined in a random porous matrix formed by uncharged hard sphere particles. The ionic fluid is modelled as an equimolar binary mixture of oppositely charged equisized hard spheres, the so-called restricted primitive model (RPM). Considering the matrix-fluid system as a partly-quenched model, we develop a theoretical approach which combines the method of collective variables with the extension of the scaled-particle theory (SPT) for a hard-sphere fluid confined in a disordered hard-sphere matrix. The approach allows us to formulate …
We report measurements of the normal surface forces and friction forces between two mica surfaces separated by a nano-film of dicationic ionic liquid using a Surface Force Balance. The dicationic ionic liquid 1,10-bis(3-methylimidazolium)decane di- [bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)]imide forms a layered structure in nano-confinement, revealed by oscillatory structural forces. Friction measurements performed at different film thicknesses display quantized friction, i.e. discontinuities in friction as layers are squeezed out and friction coefficients dependent on the number of liquid layers confined…

Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and a coarse grained model of ionic liquids, we have investigated the impact that the shape and the intramolecular charge distribution of the ions have on the electrotuneable friction with ionic-liquid nanoscale films. We show that the electric-field induces significant structural changes in the film, leading to dramatic modifications of the friction force. Comparison of the present work with previous studies using different models of ionic liquids indicate that the phenomenology presented here applies to a wide range of ionic liquids. In pa…
Graphene nanopore based sensor devices are exhibiting the great potential for the detection of DNA. To understand the fundamental aspects of DNA translocating through a graphene nanopore, in this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and potential of mean force (PMF) calculations were carried out to investigate the layer impact of small graphene nanopore (2 nm-3 nm) to DNA translocation. It was observed that the ionic conductance was sensitive to graphene layer of open-nanopores, the probability for DNA translocation through graphene nanopore was related with the thickness of graphene nano…
Any structural transformation of water is sensitive to an external electric field, since water molecules have dipole moments. We study influence of external uniform electric field on crystallization of supercooled water enclosed between two graphene planes. Crystallization of such the system is caused by ordinary relaxation of the metastable phase into an ordered (crystalline) phase and by dipole alignment induced by an applied electric field. We found that this system at the temperature $T=268$ K, where water has the density $0.94$ g/cm$^3$ and the applied electric field is of the magnitude $…
We study charge transport in an ionic solution in a confined nanoscale geometry in the presence of an externally applied electric field and immobile background charges. For a range of parameters, the ion current shows non-monotonic behavior as a function of the external ion concentration. For small applied electric field, the ion transport can be understood from simple analytic arguments, which are supported by Monte Carlo simulation. The results qualitatively explain measurements of ion current seen in a recent experiment on ion transport through a DNA-threaded nanopore (D. J. Bonthuis et. al…
Ion transport through nanopores permeates through many areas of science and technology, from cell behavior to sensing and separation to catalysis and batteries. Two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$), and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), are recent additions to these fields. Low-dimensional materials present new opportunities to develop filtration, sensing, and power technologies, encompassing ion exclusion membranes, DNA sequencing, single molecule detection, osmotic power generation, and beyond. Moreover, the physics of ionic transport through pores and con…
Theoretical results for the extension of a polymer confined to a channel are usually derived in the limit of infinite contour length. But experimental studies and simulations of DNA molecules confined to nanochannels are not necessarily in this asymptotic limit. We calculate the statistics of the span and the end-to-end distance of a semiflexible polymer of finite length in the extended de Gennes regime, exploiting the fact that the problem can be mapped to a one-dimensional weakly self-avoiding random walk. The results thus obtained compare favourably with pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (P…

We investigate the solvation of methane and methane decorated with charges in spherically confined water droplets. Free energy profiles for a single methane molecule in droplets, ranging in diameter D, from 1 to 4 nm, show that the droplet surfaces are strongly favorable as compared to the interior. From the temperature dependence of the free energy in D=3 nm, we show that this effect is entropically driven. The potentials of mean force (PMFs) between two methane molecules show that the solvent separated minimum in the bulk is completely absent in confined water, independent of the droplet siz…
Multilayered graphene-based nanoporous membranes with electrolyte incorporated between individual sheets is a unique nano-heterostructure system in which nanoconfined electrons in graphene and ions confined in between sheets are intimately coupled throughout the entire membrane. In contrast to the general notion that the electrolyte gating is unlikely to appear in multilayered graphene stacks, it is demonstrated in this work that the electrolyte gating effect in monolayer graphene can be transferred to its corresponding multilayered porous membranes. This gating effect presented on each indivi…
We study the Brownian motion of a charged colloid, confined between two charged walls, for small separation between the colloid and the walls. The system is embedded in an ionic solution. The combined effect of electrostatic repulsion and reduced diffusion due to hydrodynamic forces results in a specific motion in the direction perpendicular to the confining walls. The apparent diffusion coefficient at short times as well as the diffusion characteristic time are shown to follow a sigmoid curve as function of a dimensionless parameter. This parameter depends on the electrostatic properties and …
