The Euler phi function on a given integer $n$ yields the number of positive integers less than $n$ that are relatively prime to $n$. Equivalently, it gives the order of the group of units in the quotient ring $\mathbb{Z}/(n)$. We generalize the Euler phi function to the Eisenstein integer ring $\mathbb{Z}[ρ]$ where $ρ$ is the primitive third root of unity $e^{2πi/3}$ by finding the order of the group of units in the ring $\mathbb{Z}[ρ]/(θ)$ for any given Eisenstein integer $θ$. As one application we investigate a sufficiency criterion for when certain unit groups $\left(\mathbb{Z}[ρ]/(γ^n)\right)^\times$ are cyclic where $γ$ is prime in $\mathbb{Z}[ρ]$ and $n \in \mathbb{N}$, thereby generalizing well-known results of similar applications in the integers and some lesser known results in the Gaussian integers. As another application, we prove that the celebrated Euler-Fermat theorem holds for the Eisenstein integers.
We extend Lax-Phillips' theorem on discreteness of pseudo-cuspforms, in the style of Colin de Verdi{è}re's use of the Friedrichs self-adjoint extension of a restriction of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, as opposed to the use of semigroup methods. We use this to prove meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein series in several $\mathbb{Q}$-rank one cases, again following Colin de Verdi{è}re, as opposed to the semigroup-oriented viewpoint of Lax-Phillips and W. Mueller.
One of the many number theoretic topics investigated by the ancient Greeks was perfect numbers, which are positive integers equal to the sum of their proper positive integral divisors. Mathematicians from Euclid to Euler investigated these mysterious numbers. We present results on perfect numbers in the ring of Eisenstein integers.
A nonempty subset A of {1,2,...,n} is called primitive if gcd(A)=1. Let f(n) and f_k(n) denote, respectively, the number of primitive subsets and the number of primitive subsets of cardinality k of {1,2,...,n}. Recursion formulas and asymptotic estimates are obtained for both functions.
Let G=O(n+3) be an orthogonal group of rank one and H=O(n+2) an anisotropic subgroup. We unwind the period along H of a spherical Eisenstein series of G against a cuspform of H into an Euler product and evaluate the local factors at odd primes.
We show that the Euler system associated to Rankin--Selberg convolutions of modular forms, introduced in our earlier works with Lei and Kings, varies analytically as the modular forms vary in $p$-adic Coleman families. We prove an explicit reciprocity law for these families, and use this to prove cases of the Bloch--Kato conjecture for Rankin--Selberg convolutions.
There are classical congruences between the class number of an imaginary quadratic field and a Bernoulli number or an Euler number. Under the BSD conjecture, Onishi obtained an elliptic generalization of these congruences, which gives congruences between the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of certain elliptic curves with CM by the Gauss integers ring and Mordell-Weil rank 0, and a coefficient of power series expansion of an elliptic function associated to Gauss integers ring. In this paper, we provide Onishi's type congruences for the Eisenstein integers case.
Let phi denote Euler's phi function. For a fixed odd prime we give an asymptotic series expansion in the sense of Poincare for the number E_q(x) of n<=x such that q does not divide phi(n). Thereby we improve on a recent theorem of B.K. Spearman and K.S. Williams [Ark. Mat. 44 (2006), 166-181]. Furthermore we resolve, under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, which of two approximations to E_q(x) is asymptotically superior using recent results of Y. Ihara on the Euler-Kronecker constant of a number field.
For a fixed odd prime q we investigate the first and second order terms of the asymptotic series expansion for the number of n\le x such that q does not divide phi(n). Part of the analysis involves a careful study of the Euler-Kronecker constants for cyclotomic fields. In particular, we show that the prime k-tuples conjecture and a conjecture of Ihara about the distribution of these Euler-Kronecker constants cannot be both true.
Let $ϕ(n)$ be the Euler-phi function, define $ϕ_0(n) = n$ and $ϕ_{k+1}(n)=ϕ(ϕ_{k}(n))$ for all $k\geq 0$. We will determine an asymptotic formula for the set of integers $n$ less than $x$ for which $ϕ_k(n)$ is $y$-smooth, conditionally on a weak form of the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture.
This paper concerns the values of the Euler phi-function evaluated simultaneously on k arithmetic progressions a_1 n + b_1, a_2 n + b_2, ..., a_k n + b_k. Assuming the necessary condition that no two of the polynomials a_i x + b_i are constant multiples of each other, we show that there are infinitely many integers n for which phi(a_1 n + b_1) > phi(a_2 n + b_2) > ... > phi(a_k n + b_k). In particular, there exist infinitely many strings of k consecutive integers whose phi-values are arranged from largest to smallest in any prescribed manner. Also, under the necessary condition ad \ne bc, any …
The generalized group of units of the ring modulo $n$ was first introduced by El-Kassar and Chehade, written as $U^k(Z_n)$. This allows us to formulate a new generalization to the Euler phi function $φ(n)$, that represents the order of $% U^k(Z_n)$ and it is denoted by $φ^{k}(n).$ In this paper, we introduce this newly defined function, where we compute its explicit form and examine some of its properties similar to that of $φ(n)$. In addition, we study some generalized equations involving $φ^{k}(n)$ where complete solution is given for some equations by considering the general case and others…
Fix a number field k with its adele ring A. Let G=O(n+3) be an orthogonal group of k-rank 1 and H=O(n+2) a k-anisotropic subgroup. We have previously [arXiv:0908.3521] described how to factor the global period of a spherical Eisenstein series of G against a cuspform F of H into an Euler product. Here, we describe how to evaluate the factors at even primes. When the local field is unramified, we carry out the computation in all cases. We show also concrete examples of the complete period when k=Q. The results are consistent with the Gross-Prasad conjecture.
In this article, several cohomology spaces associated to the arithmetic groups $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ with coefficients in any highest weight representation $\mathcal{M}_λ$ have been computed, where $λ$ denotes their highest weight. Consequently, we obtain detailed information of their Eisenstein cohomology with coefficients in $\mathcal{M}_λ$. When $\mathcal{M}_λ$ is not self dual, the Eisenstein cohomology coincides with the cohomology of the underlying arithmetic group with coefficients in $\mathcal{M}_λ$. In particular, for such a large class of represe…

In this article, the cohomology of the arithmetic group $\mathrm{Sp}_4(\mathbb{Z})$ with coefficients in any finite dimensional highest weight representation $\mathcal{M}_λ$ have been studied. Euler characteristic with coefficients in $\mathcal{M}_λ$ have been carried out in detail. Combining the results obtained on Euler characteristic and the work of Harder on Eisenstein cohomology, the description of the cuspidal cohomology has been achieved. At the end, we employ our study to compute the dimensions for the cohomology spaces $H^{\bullet}(\mathrm{Sp}_4(\mathbb{Z}), \mathcal{M}_λ)$.
We show, conditional on a uniform version of the prime k-tuples conjecture, that there are x(log x)^{-1+o(1)} numbers not exceeding x common to the ranges of Euler's function phi(n) and the sum-of-divisors function sigma(m).
We prove that for a positive integer a the integer sequence P(n) satisfying for all n, -infty<n<infty, the recurrence P(n)=a+P(n-phi(a)), phi(a) the Euler function, generates in increasing order all integers P(n) coprime to a.The finite Fourier expansion of P(n) is given in terms of a, n, and the phi(a)-th roots of unity. Properties of the sequence are derived.
This paper completes the construction of $p$-adic $L$-functions for unitary groups. More precisely, in 2006, the last three named authors proposed an approach to constructing such $p$-adic $L$-functions (Part I). Building on more recent results, including the first named author's construction of Eisenstein measures and $p$-adic differential operators, Part II of the present paper provides the calculations of local $ζ$-integrals occurring in the Euler product (including at $p$). Part III of the present paper develops the formalism needed to pair Eisenstein measures with Hida families in the set…
The upper bound and the lower bound of average numbers of divisors of Euler Phi function and Carmichael Lambda function are obtained by Luca and Pomerance (see \cite{LP}). We improve the lower bound and provide a heuristic argument which suggests that the upper bound given by \cite{LP} is indeed close to the truth.
In this paper, we give a two dimensional analogue of the Euler-MacLaurin summation formula. By using this formula, we obtain an integral representation of Weil's elliptic functions which was introduced in the book "Elliptic functions according to Eisenstein and Kronecker".
Translation of the Latin original "Speculationes circa quasdam insignes proprietates numerorum" (1784). E564 in the Enestrom index. In this paper Euler talks about Farey sequences and proves some results about the phi function, the number of positive integers less than and relatively prime to an integer. Euler uses the notation pi instead of phi.
Let phi(n) be Euler's totient function and let sigma(n) be the sum of the positive divisors of n. We show that most phi-values (integers in the range of phi) are not sigma-values and vice versa.
In this paper we compute the cohomology groups of GL(4,Z) with coefficients in symmetric powers of the standard representation twisted by the determinant. This problem arises in Goncharov's approach to the study of motivic multiple zeta values of depth 4. The techniques that we use include Kostant's formula for cohomology groups of nilpotent Lie subalgebras of a reductive Lie algebra, Borel-Serre compactification, a result of Harder on Eisenstein cohomology. Finally, we need to show that the ghost class, which is present in the cohomology of the boundary of the Borel-Serre compactification, di…
We present an algorithm to invert the Euler function $ϕ(m)$. The algorithm, for a given $n \geq 1$, in polynomial time ``on average'', finds the set $Ψ(n)$ of all solutions $m$ to $ϕ(m) = n$. In fact, in the worst case, $Ψ(n)$ is exponentially large, and cannot be computed in polynomial time. In the opposite direction, we show, under a widely accepted number theoretic conjecture, that there is a polynomial time reduction of the Partition Problem, an NP-complete problem, to the problem of deciding whether $ϕ(m) = n$ has a solution for a small set of integers n. This shows that the problem of de…
Given a p-adic representation of the Galois group of a local field, we show that its Galois cohomology can be computed using the associated etale (phi,Gamma)-module over the Robba ring; this is a variant of a result of Herr. We then establish analogues, for not necessarily etale (phi,Gamma)-modules over the Robba ring, of the Euler-Poincare characteristic formula and Tate local duality for p-adic representations. These results are expected to intervene in the duality theory for Selmer groups associated to de Rham representations.
In this paper we present a simple method for deriving recurrence relations and we apply it to obtain two equations involving the Lerch Phi function and sums of Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. Connections between these results and those obtained in a paper of H.M. Srivastava, M.L. Glasser and V. Adamchik are pointed out, emphasizing the usefulness of this approach with some meaningful examples.
An old conjecture of Sierpinski asserts that for every integer k \ge 2, there is a number m for which the equation ϕ(x)=m has exactly k solutions. Here ϕis Euler's totient function. In 1961, Schinzel deduced this conjecture from his Hypothesis H. The purpose of this paper is to present an unconditional proof of Sierpinski's conjecture. The proof uses many results from sieve theory, in particular the famous theorem of Chen.
We show that the equation phi(a)=σ(b) has infinitely many solutions, where phi is Euler's totient function and sigma is the sum-of-divisors function. This proves a 50-year old conjecture of Erdos. Moreover, we show that there are infinitely many integers n such that phi(a)=n and sigma(b)=n each have more than n^c solutions, for some c>0. The proofs rely on the recent work of the first two authors and Konyagin on the distribution of primes p for which a given prime divides some iterate of phi at p, and on a result of Heath-Brown connecting the possible existence of Siegel zeros with the distrib…
Lehmer's totient problem asks if there exist composite integers n satisfying the condition phi(n)|(n-1), (where phi is the Euler-phi function) while Carmichael numbers satisfy the weaker condition lambda(n)|(n-1) (where lambda is the Carmichael universal exponent function). We weaken the condition further, looking at those composite n where each prime divisor of phi(n) also divides n-1. (So rad(phi(n))|(n-1).) While these numbers appear to be far more numerous than the Carmichael numbers, we show that their distribution has the same rough upper bound as that of the Carmichael numbers, a bound …
The primorial $p\#$ of a prime $p$ is the product of all primes $q\le p$. Let pr$(n)$ denote the largest prime $p$ with $p\# \mid ϕ(n)$, where $ϕ$ is Euler's totient function. We show that the normal order of pr$(n)$ is $\log\log n/\log\log\log n$. That is, pr$(n) \sim \log\log n/\log\log\log n$ as $n\to\infty$ on a set of integers of asymptotic density 1. In fact we show there is an asymptotic secondary term and, on a tertiary level, there is an asymptotic Poisson distribution. We also show an analogous result for the largest integer $k$ with $k!\mid ϕ(n)$.
We initiate the study of spectral zeta functions $ζ_{X}$ for finite and infinite graphs $X$, instead of the Ihara zeta function, with a perspective towards zeta functions from number theory and connections to hypergeometric functions. The Riemann hypothesis is shown to be equivalent to an approximate functional equation of graph zeta functions. The latter holds at all points where Riemann's zeta function $ζ(s)$ is non-zero. This connection arises via a detailed study of the asymptotics of the spectral zeta functions of finite torus graphs in the critcal strip and estimates on the real part of …
We consider relations between the pairs of sequences, $(f, g_f)$, generated by the Lambert series expansions, $L_f(q) = \sum_{n \geq 1} f(n) q^n / (1-q^n)$, in $q$. In particular, we prove new forms of recurrence relations and matrix equations defining these sequences for all $n \in \mathbb{Z}^{+}$. The key ingredient to the proof of these results is given by the statement of Euler's pentagonal number theorem expanding the series for the infinite $q$-Pochhammer product, $(q; q)_{\infty}$, and for the first $n$ terms of the partial products, $(q; q)_n$, forming the denominators of the rational …
Let $k\ge 1,a\ge 1,b\ge 0$ and $ c\ge 1$ be integers. Let $f$ be a multiplicative function with $f(n)\ne 0$ for all positive integers $n$. We define the arithmetic function $g_{k,f}$ for any positive integer $n$ by $g_{k,f}(n):=\frac{\prod_{i=0}^k f(b+a(n+ic))} {f({\rm lcm}_{0\le i\le k} \{b+a(n+ic)\})}$. We first show that $g_{k,f}$ is periodic and $c {\rm lcm}(1,...,k)$ is its period. Consequently, we provide a detailed local analysis to the periodic function $g_{k,φ}$, and determine the smallest period of $g_{k,φ}$, where $φ$ is the Euler phi function.
There are few constructions of square-integrable automorphic functions on metaplectic groups. Such functions may be obtained by the residues of certain Eisenstein series on covers of groups, "theta functions," but the Fourier coefficients of these residues are not well-understood, even for low degree covers of $GL_2$. Patterson and Chinta-Friedberg-Hoffstein proposed conjectured relations for the Fourier coefficients of the $GL_2$ quartic and sextic theta functions (resp.), each obtained from a conjectured equality of non-Eulerian Dirichlet series. In this article we propose a new framework fo…
Let $R$ be a ring with identity, $\mathcal{U}(R)$ the group of units of $R$ and $k$ a positive integer. We say that $a\in \mathcal{U}(R)$ is $k$-unit if $a^k=1$. Particularly, if the ring $R$ is $\mathbb{Z}_n$, for a positive integer $n$, we will say that $a$ is a $k$-unit modulo $n$. We denote with $\mathcal{U}_k(n)$ the set of $k$-units modulo $n$. By $\text{du}_k(n)$ we represent the number of $k$-units modulo $n$ and with $\text{rdu}_k(n)=\frac{ϕ(n)}{\text{du}_k(n)}$ the ratio of $k$-units modulo $n$, where $ϕ$ is the Euler phi function. Recently, S. K. Chebolu proved that the solutions of…
