The intercalation of alkali ions into layered materials has played an essential role in battery technology since the development of the first lithium-ion electrodes. Coulomb repulsion between the intercalants leads to ordering of the intercalant sublattice, which hinders ionic diffusion and impacts battery performance. While conventional diffraction can identify the long-range order that can occur at discrete intercalant concentrations during the charging cycle, it cannot determine short-range order at other concentrations that also disrupt ionic mobility. In this article, we show that the use of real-space transforms of single crystal diffuse scattering, measured with high-energy synchrotron x-rays, allows a model-independent measurement of the temperature dependence of the length scale of ionic correlations along each of the crystallographic axes in a sodium-intercalated V$_2$O$_5$. The techniques described here provide a new way of probing the evolution of structural ordering in crystalline materials.
In this work, we expand the set of known layered compounds to include ionic layered materials, which are well known for superconducting, thermoelectric, and battery applications. Focusing on known ternary compounds from the ICSD, we screen for ionic layered structures by expanding upon our previously developed algorithm for identification of van der Waals (vdW) layered structures, thus identifying over 1,500 ionic layered compounds. Since vdW layered structures can be chemically mutated to form ionic layered structures, we have developed a methodology to structurally link binary vdW to ternary…
Non-equilibrium defects often dictate macroscopic functional properties of materials. In intercalation hosts, widely used in rechargeable batteries, high-dimensional defects largely define reversibility and kinetics1,2,3,4. However, transient defects briefly appearing during ionic transport have been challenging to capture, limiting the understanding of their life cycle and impact. Here, we overcome this challenge and track operando the interaction and impact of metastable defects within NaxNi1-xMnyO2 intercalation hosts in a charging sodium-ion battery. Three-dimensional coherent X-ray imagin…
Molecular-scale manipulation of electronic/ionic charge accumulation in materials is a preeminent challenge, particularly in electrochemical energy storage. Layered van der Waals (vdW) crystals exemplify a diverse family of materials that permit ions to reversibly associate with a host atomic lattice by intercalation into interlamellar gaps. Motivated principally by the search for high-capacity battery anodes, ion intercalation in composite materials is a subject of intense study. Yet the precise role and ability of heterolayers to modify intercalation reactions remains elusive. Previous studi…
The structural stability and electrochemical performance of boron substituted fluorinated graphite as a Li ion batteries cathode material are studied by first principles calculations. The results show that boron substituted fluorinated graphite BC3F4 possesses excellent structural stability, good electrical and ionic conductivities. Unexpectedly, the average Li intercalation voltage of LiBC3F4 is up to 4.44 V, which is much larger than that of LiBCF2. The average voltage of LiBC3F4 is even larger than that of common commercial transition metal oxides cathodes, indicating that LiBC3F4 is a brea…
Existence of van der Waals gaps renders two-dimensional (2D) materials ideal passages of lithium for being used as anode materials. However, the requirement of good conductivity significantly limits the choice of 2D candidates. So far only graphite is satisfying due to its relatively high conductivity. Recently, a new polymorph of layered germanium selenide (Gamma-GeSe) was proven to be semimetal in its bulk phase with a higher conductivity than graphite while its monolayer behaves semiconducting. In this work, by using first-principles calculations, we examined the possibility of using this n…
The cointercalation of sodium with the solvent organic molecule into graphite can resolve difficulty of forming the stage-I Na-graphite intercalation compound, which is a predominant anode of Na-ion battery. To clarify the mechanism of such cointercalation, we investigate the atomistic structure, energetics, electrochemical properties, ion and electron conductance, and charge transferring upon de/intercalation of the solvated Na-diglyme ion into graphite with {\it ab initio} calculations. It is found that the Na(digl)$_2$C$_n$ compound has the negatively lowest intercalation energy at $n\appro…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials are suitable hosts for the intercalation of extrinsic guest ions such as Li+, Na+ and K+ as the interlayer coupling is weak. This allows ion intercalation engineering of 2D materials, which may be a key to advancing technological applications in energy storage, neuromorphic electronics, and bioelectronics. However, ions that are extrinsic to the host materials possess challenges in fabrication of devices as there are extra steps of ion intercalation. This results in degradation of the long-term stability of the intercalated atomically thin structures. Here, we in…
The identification of alternatives to the Lithium-ion battery architecture remains a crucial priority in the diversification of energy storage technologies. Accompanied by the low reduction potential of $\mathrm{Ca^{2+}/Ca}$, -2.87 V vs. SHE, metal-anode-based rechargeable Calcium (Ca) batteries appear competitive in terms of energy densities. However, the development of Ca-batteries lacks high-energy density intercalation cathode materials. Using first-principles methodologies, we screen a large chemical space for potential Ca-based cathode chemistries, with composition of $\mathrm{Ca_iTM_jZ_…
Graphite has been reported to have anion as well as cation intercalation capacities as both cathode and anode host materials for the dual ion battery. In this work, we study the intercalation of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (TFSI) anion from ionic liquid electrolyte into graphite with first-principles calculations. We build models for TFSI-C$_n$ compounds with systematically increasing unit cell sizes of graphene sheet and investigate their stabilities by calculating the formation energy, resulting in the linear decrease and arriving at the limit of stability. With identified unit cell …
Interlayer space in graphite is impermeable to ions and molecules, including protons. Its controlled expansion would find several applications in desalination, gas purification, high-density batteries, etc. In the past, metal intercalation has been used to modify graphitic interlayer spaces; however, resultant intercalation compounds are unstable in water. Here, we successfully expanded graphite interlayer spaces by intercalating aqueous KCl ions electrochemically. The water conductivity shows several orders of enhancement when compared to unintercalated graphite. Water evaporation experiments…

Machine Learning (ML) interatomic models and potentials have been widely employed in simulations of materials. Long-range interactions often dominate in some ionic systems whose dynamics behavior is significantly influenced. However, the long-range effect such as Coulomb and Van der Wales potential is not considered in most ML interatomic potentials. To address this issue, we put forward a method that can take long-range effects into account for most ML local interatomic models with the reciprocal space neural network. The structure information in real space is firstly transformed into recipro…
Multivalent batteries are an energy storage technology with the potential to surpass lithium-ion batteries, however their performance has been limited by the low voltages and poor solid-state ionic mobility of available cathodes. A computational screening approach to identify high-performance multivalent intercalation cathodes among materials that do not contain the working ion of interest has been developed which greatly expands the search space that can be considered for materials discovery. This approach has been applied to magnesium cathodes as a proof of concept and four resulting candida…
Solid mixed conductors with significant ionic as well as electronic conduction play a pivotal role for mass transfer and storage as required in battery electrodes. Single-phase materials with simultaneously high electronic and ionic conductivity at room temperature are hard to come by and therefore multi-phase systems with separate ion and electron channels have been put forward instead. Here, we explore bilayer graphene as a true single phase mixed conductor and demonstrate ultrafast lithium diffusion exceeding diffusion in bulk graphite by an order of magnitude and even surpassing diffusion …
Using density functional theory calculations, we have investigated the structural, energetic, and electronic properties of ternary graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) containing alkali atoms (AM) and normal alkylamine molecules (nC$x$), denoted as AM-nC$x$-GICs (AM=Li, Na, K, $x$=1, 2, 3, 4). The orthorhombic unit cells have been used to build the models for crystalline stage-I AM-nC$x$-GICs. By performing the variable cell relaxations and the analysis of results, we have found that with the increase in the atomic number of alkali atoms the layer separations decreases in contrast to AM-GIC…
