Many-body localized systems in which interactions and disorder come together defy the expectations of quantum statistical mechanics: In contrast to ergodic systems, they do not thermalize when undergoing nonequilibrium dynamics. What is less clear, however, is how topological features interplay with many-body localized phases as well as the nature of the transition between a topological and a trivial state within the latter. In this work, we numerically address these questions, using a combination of extensive tensor network calculations, specifically DMRG-X, as well as exact diagonalization, leading to a comprehensive characterization of Hamiltonian spectra and eigenstate entanglement properties.
It is well known that in Anderson localized systems, starting from a random product state the entanglement entropy remains bounded at all times. However, we show that adding a single boundary term to an Anderson localized Hamiltonian leads to unbounded growth of entanglement. Our results imply that Anderson localization is not a local property. One cannot conclude that a subsystem has Anderson localized behavior without looking at the whole system, as a term that is arbitrarily far from the subsystem can affect the dynamics of the subsystem in such a way that the features of Anderson localizat…
The entanglement spectrum of the reduced density matrix contains information beyond the von Neumann entropy and provides unique insights into exotic orders or critical behavior of quantum systems. Here, we show that strongly disordered systems in the many-body localized phase have power-law entanglement spectra, arising from the presence of extensively many local integrals of motion. The power-law entanglement spectrum distinguishes many-body localized systems from ergodic systems, as well as from ground states of gapped integrable models or free systems in the vicinity of scale-invariant crit…

We theoretically study the response of a many-body localized system to a local quench from a quantum information perspective. We find that the local quench triggers entanglement growth throughout the whole system, giving rise to a logarithmic lightcone. This saturates the modified Lieb-Robinson bound for quantum information propagation in many-body localized systems previously conjectured based on the existence of local integrals of motion. In addition, near the localization-delocalization transition, we find that the final states after the local quench exhibit volume-law entanglement. We also…
We propose a spatio-temporal characterization of the entanglement dynamics in many-body localized (MBL) systems, which exhibits a striking resemblance with dynamical heterogeneity in classical glasses. Specifically, we find that the relaxation times of local entanglement, as measured by the concurrence, are spatially correlated yielding a dynamical length scale for quantum entanglement. As a consequence of this spatio-temporal analysis, we observe that the considered MBL system is made up of dynamically correlated clusters with a size set by this entanglement length scale. The system decompose…
We consider fully many-body localized systems, i.e. isolated quantum systems where all the many-body eigenstates of the Hamiltonian are localized. We define a sense in which such systems are integrable, with localized conserved operators. These localized operators are interacting pseudospins, and the Hamiltonian is such that unitary time evolution produces dephasing but not "flips" of these pseudospins. As a result, an initial quantum state of a pseudospin can in principle be recovered via (pseudospin) echo procedures. We discuss how the exponentially decaying interactions between pseudospins …
We explore the use of short-range entanglement measures, such as concurrence and negativity, and global entanglement measures such as geometric entanglement, as indicators of many-body localization (MBL) in the spectra of disordered spin systems. From the perspective of entanglement monogamy, the two types of entanglement behave oppositely in the thermalized and MBL phases. In a recent work, the concurrence of subsystems, a measure of local entanglement, was used in a study of many-body localization in a one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ system (Bera and Lakshminarayan, 2016). We show numerically tha…

An interacting quantum system that is subject to disorder may cease to thermalize due to localization of its constituents, thereby marking the breakdown of thermodynamics. The key to our understanding of this phenomenon lies in the system's entanglement, which is experimentally challenging to measure. We realize such a many-body-localized system in a disordered Bose-Hubbard chain and characterize its entanglement properties through particle fluctuations and correlations. We observe that the particles become localized, suppressing transport and preventing the thermalization of subsystems. Notab…
The symmetries associated with discrete-time quantum walks (DTQWs) and the flexibilities in controlling their dynamical parameters allow to create a large number of topological phases. An interface in position space, which separates two regions with different topological numbers, can, for example, be effectively modelled using different coin parameters for the walk on either side of the interface. Depending on the neighbouring numbers, this can lead to localized states in one-dimensional configurations and here we carry out a detailed study into the strength of such localized states. We show t…
We characterize the information dynamics of strongly disordered systems using a combination of analytics, exact diagonalization, and matrix product operator simulations. More specifically, we study the spreading of quantum information in three different scenarios: thermalizing, Anderson localized, and many-body localized. We qualitatively distinguish these cases by quantifying the amount of remnant information in a local region. The nature of the dynamics is further explored by computing the propagation of mutual information with respect to varying partitions. Finally, we demonstrate that clas…
We numerically investigate the link between the delocalization-localization transition and entanglement in a disordered long-range hopping model of spinless fermions by studying various static and dynamical quantities. This includes the inverse participation ratio, level-statistics, entanglement entropy and number fluctuations in the subsystem along with quench and wave-packet dynamics. Finite systems show delocalized, quasi-localized and localized phases. The delocalized phase shows strong area-law violation whereas the (quasi)localized phase adheres to (for large subsystems) the strict area …
The resilience of quantum entanglement to a classicality-inducing environment is tied to fundamental aspects of quantum many-body systems. The dynamics of entanglement has recently been studied in the context of measurement-induced entanglement transitions, where the steady-state entanglement collapses from a volume-law to an area-law at a critical measurement probability $p_{c}$. Interestingly, there is a distinction in the value of $p_{c}$ depending on how well the underlying unitary dynamics scramble quantum information. For strongly chaotic systems, $p_{c} > 0$, whereas for weakly chaotic …
We introduce the spectrum bifurcation renormalization group (SBRG) as a generalization of the real-space renormalization group for the many-body localized (MBL) system without truncating the Hilbert space. Starting from a disordered many-body Hamiltonian in the full MBL phase, the SBRG flows to the MBL fixed-point Hamiltonian, and generates the local conserved quantities and the matrix product state representations for all eigenstates. The method is applicable to both spin and fermion models with arbitrary interaction strength on any lattice in all dimensions, as long as the models are in the …
We probe the bulk geometry of the Wegner Wilson Flow (WWF) in the context of many-body localization, by addressing efficiency and bulk entanglement growth measures through approximating upper bounds on the boundary entanglement entropy. We connect these upper bounds to the Fubini-Study metric and clarify how a central quantity, the information fluctuation complexity, distinguishes bulk unitary rotation from entanglement production. We also give a short new proof of the small incremental entangling theorem in the absence of ancillas, achieving a dimension-independent, universal factor of $c= 2$…
We provide a simple and predictive random-matrix framework that naturally generalizes Page's law for ergodic many-body systems by incorporating a finite entanglement localization length. By comparing a highly structured one-dimensional model to a completely unstructured model and a physical system, we uncover a remarkable degree of universality, suggesting that the effective localization length is a universal combination of model parameters up until it drops down to the microscopic scale.
Entanglement is usually quantified by von Neumann entropy, but its properties are much more complex than what can be expressed with a single number. We show that the three distinct dynamical phases known as thermalization, Anderson localization, and many-body localization are marked by different patterns of the spectrum of the reduced density matrix for a state evolved after a quantum quench. While the entanglement spectrum displays Poisson statistics for the case of Anderson localization, it displays universal Wigner-Dyson statistics for both the cases of many-body localization and thermaliza…
We study entanglement dynamics in a diagonal dephasing model in which the strength of interaction decays exponentially with distance -- the so-called l-bit model of many-body localization. We calculate the exact expression for entanglement growth with time, finding in addition to a logarithmic growth, a sublogarithmic correction. Provided the l-bit picture correctly describes the many-body localized phase this implies that the entanglement in such systems does not grow (just) as a logarithm of time, as believed so far.
Eigenstates of many-body localised (MBL) systems are characterised by area-law bipartite entanglement along with multifractal statistics of their amplitudes on Hilbert space. At the same time, sparse random pure states with fractal statistics are not compatible with area-law and necessarily exhibit volume-law entanglement. This raises the question that what correlation functions of Hilbert-space amplitudes MBL eigenstates must possess for their area law entanglement to be compatible with their multifractality. In this work, we identify and compute such appropriate Hilbert-space correlations wh…
Many-body localization is a unique physical phenomenon driven by interactions and disorder for which a quantum system can evade thermalization. While the existence of a many-body localized phase is now well-established in one-dimensional systems, its fate in higher dimension is an open question. We present evidence for the occurrence of a transition to a many-body localized regime in a two-dimensional quantum dimer model with interactions and disorder. Our analysis is based on the results of large-scale simulations for static and dynamical properties of a consequent number of observables. Our …
We study the details of the distribution of the entanglement spectrum (eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix) of a disordered spin chain exhibiting a many-body localization (MBL) transition. In the thermalizing region we identify the evolution under increasing system size of the eigenvalues distribution function, whose thermodynamic limit is close (but possibly different from) the Marchenko-Pastur distribution. From the analysis we extract a correlation length $L_s(h)$ determining the minimum system size to enter the asymptotic region. We find that $L_s(h)$ diverges at the MBL transition. …
While the scaling of entanglement in a quantum system can be used to distinguish many-body quantum phases, it is usually hard to quantify the amount of entanglement in mixed states of open quantum systems, while measuring entanglement experimentally, even for the closed systems, requires in general quantum state tomography. In this work we show how to remedy this situation in system with a fixed or conserved charge, e.g., density or magnetization, due to an emerging relation between quantum correlations and coherence. First, we show how, in these cases, the presence of multipartite entanglemen…
Whether or not the thermodynamic entropy is equal to the entanglement entropy of an eigenstate, is of fundamental interest, and is closely related to the `Eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH)'. However, this has never been exploited as a diagnostic tool in many-body localized systems. In this work, we perform this diagnostic test on a clean interacting system (subjected to a static electric field) that exhibits three distinct phases: integrable, non-integrable ergodic and non-integrable many-body-localized (MBL). We find that in the non-integrable ergodic phase, the equivalence between t…
We investigate dynamical quantum phase transitions in disordered quantum many-body models that can support many-body localized phases. Employing $l$-bits formalism, we lay out the conditions for which singularities indicative of the transitions appear in the context of many-body localization. Using the combination of the mapping onto $l$-bits and exact diagonalization results, we explicitly demonstrate the presence of these singularities for a candidate model that features many-body localization. Our work paves the way for understanding dynamical quantum phase transitions in the context of man…
We study the localization problem of one-dimensional interacting spinless fermions in an incommensurate optical lattice, which changes from an extended phase to a nonergoic many-body localized phase by increasing the strength of the incommensurate potential. We identify that there exists an intermediate regime before the system enters the many-body localized phase, in which both the localized and extended many-body states coexist, thus the system is divided into three different phases, which can be characterized by normalized participation ratios of the many-body eigenstates and distributions …
Eigenstates of local many-body interacting systems that are far from spectral edges are thought to be ergodic and close to being random states. This is consistent with the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and volume-law scaling of entanglement. We point out that systematic departures from complete randomness are generically present in mid-spectrum eigenstates, and focus on the departure of the entanglement entropy from the random-state prediction. We show that the departure is (partly) due to spatial correlations and due to orthogonality to the eigenstates at the spectral edge, which impos…
We experimentally study a periodically driven many-body localized system realized by interacting fermions in a one-dimensional quasi-disordered optical lattice. By preparing the system in a far-from-equilibrium state and monitoring the remains of an imprinted density pattern, we identify a localized phase at high drive frequencies and an ergodic phase at low ones. These two distinct phases are separated by a dynamical phase transition which depends on both the drive frequency and the drive strength. Our observations are quantitatively supported by numerical simulations and are directly connect…
We study the properties of excited states in one-dimensional many-body localized (MBL) systems using a matrix product state algorithm. First, the method is tested for a large disordered non-interacting system, where for comparison we compute a quasi-exact reference solution via a Monte Carlo sampling of the single-particle levels. Thereafter, we present extensive data obtained for large interacting systems of L~100 sites and large bond dimensions chi~1700, which allows us to quantitatively analyze the scaling behavior of the entanglement S in the system. The MBL phase is characterized by a log…
We characterize the growth and spreading of operators and entanglement in two paradigmatic non-thermalizing phases - the many-body localized phase and the random singlet phase - using out-of-time-ordered correlators, the entanglement contour, and operator entanglement. We contrast these phases with strongly thermalizing holographic conformal field theories and fully localized Anderson insulators. We obtain a phenomenological description of the operator and state dynamics of these phases and demonstrate the utility of the entanglement contour and operator entanglement measures as useful probes …
We show how the thermodynamic properties of large many-body localized systems can be studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. To this end we devise a heuristic way of constructing local integrals of motion of very high quality, which are added to the Hamiltonian in conjunction with Lagrange multipliers. The ground state simulation of the shifted Hamiltonian corresponds to a high-energy state of the original Hamiltonian in case of exactly known local integrals of motion. We can show that the inevitable mixing between eigenstates as a consequence of non-perfect integrals of motion is weak …
Power-law interactions play a key role in a large variety of physical systems. In the presence of disorder, these systems may undergo many-body localization for a sufficiently large disorder. Within the many-body localized phase the system presents in time an algebraic growth of entanglement entropy, $S_{vN}(t)\propto t^γ$. Whereas the critical disorder for many-body localization depends on the system parameters, we find by extensive numerical calculations that the exponent $γ$ acquires a universal value $γ_c\simeq 0.33$ at the many-body localization transition, for different lattice models an…
We experimentally study the effects of coupling one-dimensional Many-Body Localized (MBL) systems with identical disorder. Using a gas of ultracold fermions in an optical lattice, we artifically prepare an initial charge density wave in an array of 1D tubes with quasi-random onsite disorder and monitor the subsequent dynamics over several thousand tunneling times. We find a strikingly different behavior between MBL and Anderson Localization. While the non-interacting Anderson case remains localized, in the interacting case any coupling between the tubes leads to a delocalization of the entire …
We explore the finite-temperature dynamics of the quasi-1D orbital compass and plaquette Ising models. We map these systems onto a model of free fermions coupled to strictly localized spin-1/2 degrees of freedom. At finite temperature, the localized degrees of freedom act as emergent disorder and localize the fermions. Although the model can be analyzed using free-fermion techniques, it has dynamical signatures in common with typical many-body localized systems: Starting from generic initial states, entanglement grows logarithmically; in addition, equilibrium dynamical correlation functions de…
Some interacting disordered many-body systems are unable to thermalize when the quenched disorder becomes larger than a threshold value. Although several properties of nonzero energy density eigenstates (in the middle of the many-body spectrum) exhibit a qualitative change across this many-body localization (MBL) transition, many of the commonly-used diagnostics only do so over a broad transition regime. Here, we provide evidence that the transition can be located precisely even at modest system sizes by sharply-defined changes in the distribution of extremal eigenvalues of the reduced density…
Dynamical localization is the analog of Anderson localization in momentum space, where the system's energy saturates and the single-particle wave-functions are exponentially localized in momentum space. In the presence of interactions, in the context of a periodically kicked Bose gas, it has been argued that dynamical localization persists. Focusing on the Tonks (strongly interacting) regime, we show that the many-body dynamically localized phase is effectively thermal, a clear deviation from the breaking of ergodicity observed in standard many-body localized systems. We relate the effective t…
We study dynamics of isolated quantum many-body systems under periodic driving. We consider a driving protocol in which the Hamiltonian is switched between two different operators periodically in time. The eigenvalue problem of the associated Floquet operator maps onto an effective hopping problem in energy space. Using the effective model, we establish conditions on the spectral properties of the two Hamiltonians for the system to localize in energy space. We find that ergodic systems always delocalize in energy space and heat up to infinite temperature, for both local and global driving. In …
In this work we probe the dynamics of the particle-hole symmetric many-body localized (MBL) phase. We provide numerical evidence that it can be characterized by an algebraic propagation of both entanglement and charge, unlike in the conventional MBL case. We explain the mechanism of this anomalous diffusion through a formation of bound states, which coherently propagate via long-range resonances. By projecting onto the two-particle sector of the particle-hole symmetric model, we show that the formation and observed subdiffusive dynamics is a consequence of an interplay between symmetry and int…
Recently, it has been suggested that the Many-Body Localized phase can be characterized by local integrals of motion. Here we introduce a Hilbert space preserving renormalization scheme that iteratively finds such integrals of motion exactly. Our method is based on the consecutive action of a similarity transformation using displacement operators. We show, as a proof of principle, localization and the delocalization transition in interacting fermion chains with random onsite potentials. Our scheme of consecutive displacement transformations can be used to study Many Body Localization in any di…
The discrete time crystal (DTC) is a recently discovered phase of matter that spontaneously breaks time-translation symmetry. Disorder-induced many-body-localization is required to stabilize a DTC to arbitrary times, yet an experimental investigation of this localized regime has proven elusive. Here, we observe the hallmark signatures of a many-body-localized DTC using a novel quantum simulation platform based on individually controllable $^{13}$C nuclear spins in diamond. We demonstrate the characteristic long-lived spatiotemporal order and confirm that it is robust for generic initial states…
We study numerically the formation of entanglement clusters across the many-body localization phase transition. We observe a crossover from strong many-body entanglement in the ergodic phase to weak local correlations in the localized phase, with contiguous clusters throughout the phase diagram. Critical states close to the transition have a structure compatible with fractal or multiscale-entangled states, characterized by entanglement at multiple levels: small strongly entangled clusters are weakly entangled together to form larger clusters. The critical point therefore features subthermal en…
The Loschmidt echo, defined as the overlap between quantum wave function evolved with different Hamiltonians, quantifies the sensitivity of quantum dynamics to perturbations and is often used as a probe of quantum chaos. In this work we consider the behavior of the Loschmidt echo in the many body localized phase, which is characterized by emergent local integrals of motion, and provides a generic example of non-ergodic dynamics. We demonstrate that the fluctuations of the Loschmidt echo decay as a power law in time in the many-body localized phase, in contrast to the exponential decay in few-b…
We argue that the a.c. conductivity $σ(ω)$ in the many-body localized phase is a power law of frequency $ω$ at low frequency: specifically, $σ(ω) \sim ω^α$ with the exponent $α$ approaching 1 at the phase transition to the thermal phase, and asymptoting to 2 deep in the localized phase. We identify two separate mechanisms giving rise to this power law: deep in the localized phase, the conductivity is dominated by rare resonant pairs of configurations; close to the transition, the dominant contributions are rare regions that are locally critical or in the thermal phase. We present numerical evi…
Tensor networks are a powerful formalism for transforming one set of degrees of freedom to another. They have been heavily used in analyzing the geometry of bulk/boundary correspondence in conformal field theories. Here we develop a tensor-network version of the Wilson-Wegner Renormalization Group Flow equations to efficiently generate a unitary tensor network which diagonalizes many-body localized Hamiltonians. Treating this unitary tensor network as a bulk geometry, we find this emergent geometry corresponds to the shredded horizon picture: the circumference of the network shrinks exponentia…
We investigate the influence of density, interaction and harmonic confinement on the superfluid to insulator transition (SIT) in disordered fermionic superfluids described by the one-dimensional Hubbard model. We quantify the ground-state single-site entanglement via density-functional theory calculations of the linear entropy. We analyze the critical concentration $C_C$ at which the fully-localized state $-$ a special type of localization, with null entanglement $-$ emerges. We find that $C_C$ is independent on the interaction, but demands a minimum disorder strength to occur. We then derive …
Many-body localization was proven under realistic assumptions by constructing a quasi-local unitary rotation that diagonalizes the Hamiltonian (Imbrie, 2016). A natural generalization is to consider all unitaries that have a similar structure. We bound entanglement for states generated by such unitaries, thus providing an independent proof of area law in eigenstates of many-body localized systems. An error of approximating the unitary by a finite-depth local circuit is obtained. We connect the defined family of unitaries to other results about many-body localization (Kim et al, 2014), in parti…
We propose and analyze a new approach to the coherent control and manipulation of quantum degrees of freedom in disordered, interacting systems in the many-body localized phase. Our approach leverages a number of unique features of many-body localization: a lack of thermalization, a locally gapped spectrum, and slow dephasing. Using the technique of quantum phase estimation, we demonstrate a protocol that enables the local preparation of a many-body system into an effective eigenstate. This leads to the ability to encode information and control interactions without full microscopic knowledge o…
Coupling a many-body-localized system to a dissipative bath necessarily leads to delocalization. Here, we investigate the nature of the ensuing relaxation dynamics and the information it holds on the many-body-localized state. We formulate the relevant Lindblad equation in terms of the local integrals of motion of the underlying localized Hamiltonian. This allows to map the quantum evolution deep in the localized state to tractable classical rate equations. We consider two different types of dissipation relevant to systems of ultra-cold atoms: dephasing due to inelastic scattering on the latti…
We adopt a geometric perspective on Fock space to provide two complementary insights into the eigenstates in many-body-localized fermionic systems. On the one hand, individual many-bodylocalized eigenstates are well approximated by a Slater determinant of single-particle orbitals. On the other hand, the orbitals of different eigenstates in a given system display a varying, and generally imperfect, degree of compatibility, as we quantify by a measure based on the projectors onto the corresponding single-particle subspaces. We study this incompatibility between states of fixed and differing part…
We model a one-dimensional (1D) current-driven interacting disordered system through a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with asymmetric hopping and study the entanglement properties of its eigenstates. In particular, we investigate whether a many-body localizable system undergoes a transition to a current-carrying non-equilibrium steady state under the drive and how the entanglement properties of the quantum states change across the transition. We also discuss the dynamics, entanglement growth, and long-time fate of a generic initial state under an appropriate time-evolution of the system governed by…
We introduce a method to efficiently study the dynamical properties of many-body localized systems in the regime of strong disorder and weak interactions. Our method reproduces qualitatively and quantitatively the real-time evolution with a polynomial effort in system size and independent of the desired time scales. We use our method to study quantum information propagation, correlation functions, and temporal fluctuations in one- and two-dimensional MBL systems. Moreover, we outline strategies for a further systematic improvement of the accuracy and we point out relations of our method to rec…
