This paper combines experimental and modelling studies to provide a detailed examination of the influence of porosity volume fraction and morphology on the polarisation-electric field response of ferroelectric materials. The broadening of the electric field distribution and a decrease in the electric field experienced by the ferroelectric ceramic medium due to the presence of low-permittivity pores is examined and its implications on the shape of the hysteresis loop, remnant polarisation and coercive field is discussed. The variation of coercive field with porosity level is seen to be complex and is attributed to two competing mechanisms where at high porosity levels the influence of the broadening of the electric field distribution dominates, while at low porosity levels an increase in the compliance of the matrix is more important. This new approach to understanding these materials enables the seemingly conflicting observations in the existing literature to be clarified and provides an effective approach to interpret the influence of pore fraction and morphology on the polarisation behaviour of ferroelectrics. Such information provides new insights in the interpretation of the physical properties of porous ferroelectric materials to inform future effort in the design of ferroelectric materials for piezoelectric sensor, actuator, energy harvesting, and transducer applications.
We report an electric-field poling study of the geometric-driven improper ferroelectric h-ErMnO$_3$. From a detailed dielectric analysis we deduce the temperature and frequency dependent range for which single-crystalline h-ErMnO$_3$ exhibits purely intrinsic dielectric behaviour, i.e., free from extrinsic so-called Maxwell-Wagner polarisations that arise, for example, from surface barrier layers. In this regime ferroelectric hysteresis loops as function of frequency, temperature and applied electric fields are measured revealing the theoretically predicted saturation polarisation in the order…
Dabconium hybrid perovskites include a number of recently-discovered ferroelectric phases with large spontaneous polarisations. The origin of ferroelectric response has been rationalised in general terms in the context of hydrogen bonding, covalency, and strain coupling. Here we use a combination of simple theory, Monte Carlo simulations, and density functional theory calculations to assess the ability of these microscopic ingredients---together with the always-present through-space dipolar coupling---to account for the emergence of polarisation in these particular systems whilst not in other …
Ferroelectrics are technologically important, with wide application in micromechanical systems, nonlinear optics, and information storage. Recent discoveries of exotic polarisation textures in these materials, which can strongly influence their properties, have brought to the forefront questions about the nature of their domain walls -- long believed to be primarily Ising, with locally null polarisation. Here, combining three complementary techniques -- second harmonic generation microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy - to cover all the relevant length…
It is of great interest to design and make materials in which ferroelectric polarisation is coupled to other order parameters such as lattice, magnetic and electronic instabilities. Such materials will be invaluable in next-generation data storage devices. Recently, remarkable progress has been made in understanding improper ferroelectric coupling mechanisms that arise from lattice and magnetic instabilities. However, although theoretically predicted, a compact lattice coupling between electronic and ferroelectric (polar) instabilities has yet to be realised. Here we report detailed crystallog…
The application of ferroelectric materials (i.e. solids that exhibit spontaneous electric polarisation) in solar cells has a long and controversial history. This includes the first observations of the anomalous photovoltaic effect (APE) and the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPE). The recent successful application of inorganic and hybrid perovskite structured materials (e.g. BiFeO3, CsSnI3, CH3NH3PbI3) in solar cells emphasises that polar semiconductors can be used in conventional photovoltaic architectures. We review developments in this field, with a particular emphasis on the materials known to …
High performance lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics with aligned porosity for sensing applications were fabricated by an ice-templating method. To demonstrate the enhanced properties of these materials and their potential for sensor and hydrophone applications, the piezoelectric voltage constants hydrostatic parameters and AC conductivity as a function of the porosity in directions both parallel and perpendicular to the freezing temperature gradient were studied. As the porosity level was increased, PZT poled parallel to the freezing direction exhibited the highest coefficients, and hydros…
The presence of a space charge region induces an internal electric field within the charged region that, in a ferroelectric material, would rotate the polarisations to align with the field. The strength of the induced field would therefore determine the domain patterns and polarisation switching properties of the material. Using a phase-field model, we investigate the effect of charged layers in fully and partially depleted BiFeO$_3$ thin films in the rhombohedral phase. While the domain pattern in a charge-free BiFeO$_3$ film consists of only two polarisation variants, we observe complex patt…
Electrochemical phenomena in ferroelectrics are of particular interest for catalysis and sensing applications, with recent studies highlighting the combined role of the ferroelectric polarisation, applied surface voltage and overall switching history. Here, we present a systematic Kelvin probe microscopy study of the effect of relative humidity and polarisation switching history on the surface charge dissipation in ferroelectric Pb(Zr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$)O$_3$ thin films. We analyze the interaction of surface charges with ferroelectric domains through the framework of physically constrained unsu…
Semiconducting ferroelectric materials with low energy polarisation switching offer a platform for next-generation electronics such as ferroelectric field-effect transistors. Ferroelectric domains at symmetry-broken interfaces of transition metal dichalcogenide films provide an opportunity to combine the potential of semiconducting ferroelectrics with the design flexibility of two-dimensional material devices. Here, local control of ferroelectric domains in a marginally twisted WS2 bilayer is demonstrated with a scanning tunneling microscope at room temperature, and their observed reversible e…
Bismuth ferrite is one of the most widely studied multiferroic materials because of its large ferroelectric polarisation coexisting with magnetic order at room temperature. Using density functional theory (DFT), we identify several previously unknown polar and non-polar structures within the low-energy phase space of perovskite-structure bismuth ferrite, BiFeO$_3$. Of particular interest is a series of non-centrosymmetric structures with polarisation along one lattice vector, combined with anti-polar distortions, reminiscent of ferroelectric domains, along a perpendicular direction. We discuss…
We have investigated the crystal structure and the ferroelectric properties of BaTiO3 thin films with YBa2Cu3O7-d as the bottom and Au as the top electrode. Epitaxial heterostructures of YBa2Cu3O7-d and BaTiO3 were prepared by dc and rf sputtering, respectively. The crystal structure of the films was characterised by x-ray diffraction. The ferroelectric behaviour of the BaTiO3 films was confirmed by hysteresis loop measurements using a Sawyer Tower circuit. We obtain a coercive field of 30 kV/cm and a remanent polarisation of 1.25 \muC/cm. At sub-switching fields the capacitance of the films o…
Ferroelectric Rashba semiconductors (FERSC), in which Rashba spin-splitting can be controlled and reversed by an electric field, have recently emerged as a new class of functional materials useful for spintronic applications. The development of concrete devices based on such materials is, however, still hampered by the lack of robust FERSC compounds. Here, we show that the coexistence of large spontaneous polarisation and sizeable spin-orbit coupling is not sufficient to have strong Rashba effects and clarify why simple ferroelectric oxide perovskites with transition metal at the B-site are ty…
Bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3, is a multiferroic solid that is attracting increasing attention as a potential photocatalytic material, because the ferroelectric polarisation enhances the separation of photogenerated carriers. With the motivation of finding routes to engineer the band gap and the band alignment, while conserving or enhancing the ferroelectric properties, we have investigated the thermodynamic, electronic and ferroelectric properties of BiCoxFe1 xO3 solid solutions, with 0 < x < 0.13, using density functional theory. We show that the band gap can be reduced from 2.9 eV to 2.1 eV by co…
Bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3, is the only known room-temperature 'multiferroic' material. We demonstrate here, using neutron scattering measurements in high quality single crystals, that the antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders are intimately coupled. Initially in a single ferroelectric state, our crystals have a canted antiferromagnetic structure describing a unique cycloid. Under electrical poling, polarisation re-orientation induces a spin flop. We argue here that the coupling between the two orders may be stronger in the bulk than that observed in thin films where the cycloid is absent.
A method for evaluating the piezoelectric response of unpoled ferroelectric ceramics from elastic and dielectric measurements is proposed and tested on BaTiO$_3$. The method is based on the observation that the softening in a ferroelectric phase with respect to the paraelectric phase is of piezoelectric origin. The angular averages of the piezoelectric softening in unpoled ceramics are calculated for ferroelectric phases of different symmetries. The expression of the orientational average with the piezoelectric and dielectric constants of single crystal tetragonal BaTiO$_3$ from the literature…
Contradictory results on the ferroelectric response of type II multiferroic YBaCuFeO$_{5}$, in its incommensurate phase, has of late, opened up a lively debate. There are ambiguous reports on the nature of the spiral magnetic state. Using first-principles DFT calculations for the parent compound within LSDA+U+SO approximation, the multiferroic response and the nature of spiral state is revealed. The helical spiral is found to be more stable below the transition temperature as spins prefer to lie in ab plane. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and the spin current mechanism were earlier…
We report a model describing the molecular orientation disorder in CH3NH3PbI3, solving a classical Hamiltonian parametrised with electronic structure calculations, with the nature of the motions informed by ab-initio molecular dynamics. We investigate the temperature and static electric field dependence of the equilibrium ferroelectric (molecular) domain structure and resulting polarisability. A rich domain structure of twinned molecular dipoles is observed, strongly varying as a function of temperature and applied electric field. We propose that the internal electrical fields associated with …
We present a theory for surface polaritons on ferroelectric-antiferromagnetic materials with canted spin structure. Canting is assumed to be due to a Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction with the electric polarisation and weak ferromagnetism directed in the plane parallel to the surface. Surface and bulk modes for a semi-infinite film are calculated for the case of transverse magnetic polarisation. Example results are presented using parameters appropriate for BaMnF4. We find that the magnetoelectric interaction gives rise to "leaky" surface modes, i.e. pseudosurface waves that exist in the pass b…
We present measurements of conductance hysteresis on CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite thin films, performed using the double-wave method, in order to investigate the possibility of a ferroelectric response. A strong frequency dependence of the hysteresis is observed in the range of 0.1 Hz to 150 Hz, with a hysteretic charge density in excess of 1000 μC/cm2 at frequencies below 0.4 Hz - a behaviour uncharacteristic of a ferroelectric response. We show that the observed hysteretic conductance, as well as the presence of a double arc in the impedance spectroscopy, can be fully explained by the migration of …
Structural, impedance, ferroelectric and magnetic properties were examined in multiferroic Bi_{2}Fe_{4(1-x)}Co_{4x}O_{9} (0$\leq$x$\leq$0.02) ceramics synthesized via solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction analysis and Rietveld refinement showed secondary phase formation (for x$\geq$0.01) which was subsequently confirmed from room temperature Raman spectroscopy study. The frequency dependence of impedance and electric modulus of the material showed the presence of non-Debye type relaxation in all the samples. The values of the activation energies calculated from imaginary impedance and…
Organometallic lead halide perovskites are highly efficient materials for solar cells and other optoelectronic applications due to their high quantum efficiency and exceptional semiconducting properties. A peculiarity of these perovskites is the substantial ionic motion under external forces. Here, we reveal that electric field-and light-induced ionic motion in MAPbX3 crystals (X=Cl, Br, I and MA=CH3NH3) leads to unexpected piezoelectric-like response, an order of magnitude larger than in ferroelectric perovskite oxides. The nominal macroscopic symmetry of the crystals is broken by redistribut…
Ferroelectric-based photovoltaics have shown great promise as a source of renewable energy, thanks to their in-built charge separation capability, yet their efficiency is often limited by low charge carrier mobilities. In this work, we compare the photovoltaic prospects of various phases of the multiferroic material BiFeO$_3$ by evaluating their charge carrier effective masses using first-principles simulations. We identify a tetragonal phase with the promising combination of a large spontaneous polarisation and relatively light charge carriers. From a systematic study of the octahedral distor…
