Core-collapse supernovae are found in galaxies with ongoing star-formation. In a starburst galaxy hosting an active galactic nucleus with a relativistic jet, supernovae can take place inside the jet. The collision of the supernova ejecta with the jet flow is expected to lead to the formation of an interaction region, in which particles can be accelerated and produce high-energy emission. We study the non-thermal radiation produced by electrons accelerated as a result of a supernova explosion inside the jet of an active galactic nucleus within a star-forming galaxy. We first analyzed the dynamical evolution of the supernova ejecta impacted by the jet. Then, we explored the parameter space using simple prescriptions for the observed gamma-ray lightcurve. Finally, the synchrotron and the inverse Compton spectral energy distributions for two types of sources, a radio galaxy and a powerful blazar, are computed. For a radio galaxy, the interaction between a supernova and a jet of power $\sim 10^{43}-10^{44}$~erg~s$^{-1}$ can produce apparent gamma-ray luminosities of $\sim 10^{42}-10^{43}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, with an event duty cycle of supernova remnant (SNR) interacting with the jet close to one for one galaxy. For a blazar with a powerful jet of $\sim 10^{46}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, the jet-supernova ejecta interaction could produce apparent gamma-ray luminosities of $\sim 10^{43}-10^{44}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, but with a much lower duty cycle. The interaction of supernovae with misaligned jets of moderate power can be relatively frequent, and can result in steady gamma-ray emission potentially detectable for sources in the local universe. For powerful blazars much farther away, the emission would be steady as well, and it might be detectable under very efficient acceleration, but the events would be rather infrequent.
I analyse some properties of the luminous transient event SN 2019zrk and conclude that jets were the main powering sources of the pre-explosion outburst (precursor) and ejection of a massive circumstellar matter (CSM), of the very energetic explosion itself, and of the post-explosion bump in the light curve. The pre-explosion energy source is mainly a companion (main sequence, Wolf-Rayet, neutron star or black hole) star that accreted mass and launched jets. I find that the fast expansion of the CSM after acceleration by the explosion ejecta requires the explosion energy to be >10^{52} erg. On…
Type Ibn supernova SN~2010al is explored to infer parameters of supernova and a circumstellar (CS) shell. The CS interaction model combined with the spectral model of 4600Å blend suggests the explosion of a WR star with the energy of $(1-1.5)\times10^{51}$ erg inside a dense confined CS shell with the mass of $\sim0.1$\msun\ and kinetic energy of $\sim 10^{48}$ erg. The confined CS shell has been formed during the last 0.4 yr prior to the core collapse.
The recent study of SN 2013fs flash spectrum suggests enormous for SN IIP explosion energy, far beyond possibilities of the neutrino mechanism. The issue of the explosion energy of SN 2013fs is revisited making use of effects of the early supernova interaction with the dense circumstellar shell. The velocity of the cold dense shell between reverse and forward shocks is inferred from the analysis of the broad \heii\,4686\,Å on day 2.4. This velocity alongside with other observables provide us with an alternative energy estimate of $\sim1.8\times10^{51}$\,erg for the preferred mass of $\sim10$\m…
Progress in the three-dimensional modeling of supernovae (SN) prompts us to revisit the supernova remnant (SNR) phase. We continue our study of the imprint of a thermonuclear explosion on the SNR it produces, that we started with a delayed-detonation model of a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf. Here we compare two different types of explosion models, each with two variants: two delayed detonation models (N100ddt, N5ddt) and two pure deflagration models (N100def, N5def), where the N number parametrizes the ignition. The output of each SN simulation is used as input of a SNR simulation carried on …
A detection of a core-collapse supernova signal with an Advanced LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave detector network will allow us to measure astrophysical parameters of the source. In real advanced gravitational-wave detector data there are transient noise artifacts that may mimic a true gravitational-wave signal. In this paper, we outline a procedure implemented in the Supernova Model Evidence Extractor (SMEE) that determines if a core-collapse supernova signal candidate is a noise artefact, a rapidly-rotating core-collapse supernova signal, or a neutrino explosion mechanism core-collapse sup…
Understanding gravitational wave emission from core-collapse supernovae will be essential for their detection with current and future gravitational wave detectors. This requires a sample of waveforms from modern 3D supernova simulations reaching well into the explosion phase, where gravitational wave emission is expected to peak. However, recent waveforms from 3D simulations with multi-group neutrino transport do not reach far into the explosion phase, and some are still obtained from non-exploding models. We therefore calculate waveforms up to 0.9\,s after bounce using the neutrino hydrodynam…
The nature of core-collapse supernova (SN) explosions is yet incompletely understood. The present article revisits the scenario in which the release of latent heat due to a first-order phase transition, from normal nuclear matter to the quark-gluon plasma, liberates the necessary energy to explain observed SN explosions. Here, the role of the metallicity of the stellar progenitor is investigated, comparing a solar metallicity and a low-metallicity case, both having a zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) mass of 75 $M_\odot$. It is found that low-metallicity models belong exclusively to the failed SN …
We examine the binding energies of massive stripped-envelope core collapse supernova (SECCSN) progenitors with the stellar evolution code MESA, and find that the jittering jets explosion mechanism is preferred for explosions where carbon-oxygen cores with masses of $>20 M_\odot$ collapse to leave a neutron star (NS) remnant. We calculate the binding energy at core collapse under the assumption that the remnant is a NS. Namely, stellar gas above mass coordinate of $~1.5-2.5 M_\odot$ is ejected in the explosion. We find that the typical binding energy of the ejecta of stripped-envelope progenito…
Type Ia supernovae (SNe) are believed to be caused by the thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf (WD), but the nature of the progenitor system(s) is still unclear. Recent theoretical and observational developments have led to renewed interest in double degenerate models, in particular the "helium-ignited violent merger" or "dynamically-driven double-degenerate double-detonation" (D$^6$). In this paper we take the output of an existing D$^6$ SN model and carry it into the supernova remnant (SNR) phase up to 4000 years after the explosion, past the time when all the ejecta have been shocked. A…
We study the hydrodynamic evolution of an explosion close to the stellar surface, and give predictions for the radiation from such an event. We show that such an event will give rise to a multi-wavelength transient. We apply this model to describe a precursor burst to the peculiar supernova iPTF14hls, which occurred in 1954, sixty year before the supernova. We propose that the new generation of optical surveys might detect similar transients, and they can be used to identify supernova progenitors well before the explosion.
We present synthetic light curves of fallback-powered supernovae based on a neutrino-driven explosion of a 40 Msun zero-metallicity star with significant fallback accretion onto a black hole that was previously simulated by Chan et al. (2018) until shock breakout. Here, we investigate the light curve properties of the explosion after shock breakout for various fallback models. Without extra power from fallback accretion, the light curve is that of a Type IIP supernova with a plateau magnitude of around -14 mag and a plateau duration of 40 days. With extra power for the light curve from fallbac…
We conduct three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of weak jets that we launch into a core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) ejecta half an hour after the explosion and find that the interaction of the fast jets with the CCSN ejecta creates high pressure zones that induce a backflow that results in mass accretion onto the newly born neutron star. In cases of weak jets, a total power of 10^45-10^46 erg, the backflow mass accretion might power up to an order of magnitude more energetic jets. In total, the jets of the two post-explosion jet-launching episodes have enough energy to influence the mo…
We investigate the properties, composition, and dynamics of dust formation and growth for a diverse set of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), varying the progenitor mass, explosion energy, and engine type. These explosions are evolved with a 1-D Lagrangian hydrodynamics code out to several hundred days to model the ejecta as it expands and cools. A multigrain dust nucleation and growth model is applied to these results. We find that higher explosion energies lead to an earlier onset of dust formation, smaller grain sizes, and larger silicate abundances. Further, we see that nuclear burning duri…
In this study, we present the first multidimensional core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) simulations including QCD axions in order to assess the impact on the CCSN explosion mechanism. We include axions in our simulations through the nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung emission channel and as a pure energy-sink term under the assumption that the axions free-stream after being emitted. We perform both spherically symmetric (1D) and axisymmetric (2D) simulations. In 1D, we utilize a parameterized heating scheme to achieve explosions, whereas in 2D we self-consistently realize explosions through the neut…
3D non-LTE spectrum synthesis for Type Ia supernovae
The death of massive stars is shrouded in many mysteries. One of them is the mechanism that overturns the collapse of the degenerate iron core into an explosion, a process that determines the supernova explosion energy, properties of the surviving compact remnant, and the nucleosynthetic yields. The number of core-collapse supernova observations has been growing with an accelerating pace thanks to modern time-domain astronomical surveys and new tests of the explosion mechanism are becoming possible. We review predictions of parameterized supernova explosion models and compare them with explosi…
Most existing criteria derived from progenitor properties of core-collapse supernovae are not very accurate in predicting explosion outcomes. We present a novel look at identifying the explosion outcome of core-collapse supernovae using a machine learning approach. Informed by a sample of 100 2D axisymmetric supernova simulations evolved with Fornax, we train and evaluate a random forest classifier as an explosion predictor. Furthermore, we examine physics-based feature sets including the compactness parameter, the Ertl condition, and a newly developed set that characterizes the silicon/oxygen…
We propose a new constraint on light (sub-GeV) particles beyond the Standard Model that can be produced inside the proto-neutron star core resulting from the core-collapse supernova explosion. It is derived by demanding that the energy carried by exotic particles being transferred to the progenitor stellar envelopes must not exceed the explosion energy of $\lesssim 2\cdot 10^{51}$ erg of observed supernovae. We show specifically that for the case of a dark photon which kinetically mixes with the SM photon and decays predominantly to an $e^\pm$ pair, a smaller mixing parameter of one order of m…
We study the ratio of neutrino-proton elastic scattering to inverse beta decay event counts, measurable in a scintillation detector like JUNO, as a key observable for identifying the explosion mechanism of a galactic core-collapse supernova. If the supernova is not powered by the core but rather, e.g., by collapse-induced thermonuclear explosion, then a prolonged period of accretion-dominated neutrino luminosity is predicted. Using 1D numerical simulations, we show that the distinct resulting flavour composition of the neutrino burst can be tested in JUNO with high significance, overcoming the…
We present advances in modeling Type IIP supernovae using MESA for evolution to shock breakout coupled with STELLA for generating light and radial velocity curves. Explosion models and synthetic light curves can be used to translate observable properties of supernovae (such as the luminosity at day 50 and the duration of the plateau, as well as the observable quantity $ET$, defined as the time-weighted integrated luminosity that would have been generated if there was no ${\rm ^{56}Ni}$ in the ejecta) into families of explosions which produce the same light curve and velocities on the plateau. …
The explosion outcome and diagnostics of core-collapse supernovae depend sensitively on the nature of the stellar progenitor, but most studies to date have focused exclusively on one-dimensional, spherically-symmetric massive star progenitors. We present some of the first core-collapse supernovae simulations of three-dimensional massive star supernovae progenitors, a 12.5- and a 15-M$_{\odot}$ model, evolved in three-dimensions from collapse to bounce through explosion with the radiation-hydrodynamic code F{\sc{ornax}}. We compare the results using those starting from three-dimensional progeni…
We find that the remnant of supernova (SN) 1987A share some morphological features with four supernova remnants (SNRs) that have signatures of shaping by jets, and from that we strengthen the claim that jets played a crucial role in the explosion of SN 1987A. Some of the morphological features appear also in planetary nebulae where jets are observed. The clumpy ejecta bring us to support the claim that the jittering jets explosion mechanism can account for the structure of the remnant of SN 1987A, i.e., SNR 1987A. We conduct a preliminary attempt to quantify the fluctuations in the angular mom…
We study the impact of a small-scale dynamo in core-collapse supernovae using a 3D neutrino magnetohydrodynamics simulation of a $15 M_\odot$ progenitor. The weak seed field is amplified exponentially in the gain region once neutrino-driven convection develops, and remains dominated by small-scale structures. About $250\, \mathrm{ms}$ after bounce, the field energy in the gain region reaches $\mathord{\sim} 50\%$ of kinetic equipartition. This supports the development of a neutrino-driven explosion with modest global anisotropy, which does not occur in a corresponding model without magnetic fi…
An important result in core-collapse supernova (CCSN) theory is that spherically-symmetric, one-dimensional simulations routinely fail to explode, yet multi-dimensional simulations often explode. Numerical investigations suggest that turbulence eases the condition for explosion, but how is not fully understood. We develop a turbulence model for neutrino-driven convection, and show that this turbulence model reduces the condition for explosions by about 30%, in concordance with multi-dimensional simulations. In addition, we identify which turbulent terms enable explosions. Contrary to prior sug…
