We report a spectral ellipsometry study of multilayers composed of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ (YBCO) and ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ in the spectral range of 0.7 - 6.5 eV. With increasing YBCO sublayer thickness, the optical spectral weight is enhanced at photon energies of 1.5 - 3.5 eV. The spectral weight enhancement is proportional to the number of interfaces of each multilayer sample, indicating its association with the interfacial electronic structure. Based on calculations in the framework of a multilayer model, we find that the shape of the interface-induced spectral weight is consistent with transfer of hole-carriers from YBCO to LCMO. Our results imply that the holes that are transferred across the interfaces accumulate in the LCMO layers, rather than being pinned by interfacial defects or annihilated by electron donors such as oxygen vacancies. Optical spectroscopy can thus serve as a non-destructive probe of charge transfer across buried interfaces in metal-oxide heterostructures.
An experimental study of proximity effect in La{0.67}Sr{0.33}MnO3 - YBa2Cu3O7 - La{0.67}Sr{0.33}MnO3 trilayers is reported. Transport measurements on these samples show clear oscillations in critical current (I_c) as the thickness of La{0.67}Sr{0.33}MnO3 layers (d_F) is scanned from ~ 50 A to ~ 1100 A. In the light of existing theories of ferromagnet-superconductor (FM-SC) heterostructures, this observation suggests a long range proximity effect in the manganite, modulated by it's weak exchange energy (~ 2 meV). The observed modulation of the magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic LSMO la…
YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ - La$_{2 / 3}$Sr$_{1 / 3}$MnO$_{3}$ heterostructures of [110] orientation are grown to allow direct injection of spin polarized holes from the La$_{2 / 3}$Sr$_{1 / 3}$MnO$_{3}$ into the CuO$_2$ superconducting planes. The magnetic response of the structure at T $<$ T$_{sc}$ shows both diamagnetic and ferromagnetic moments with [001] direction as magnetic easy axis. While the superconducting transition temperature (T$_{sc}$) of these structures is sharp ($Δ$T$_{sc} \simeq$ 2.5 K), the critical current density (J$_c$) follows a dependence of the type $J_c = J{_o}(1-\frac…
We studied the magnetic properties of La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ / YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ superlattices. Magnetometry showed that with increasing YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ layer thickness the saturation magnetization per La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ layer decreases. From polarized neutron reflectometry we determined that this magnetization reduction is due to an inhomogenous magnetization depth profile arising from the suppression of magnetization near the La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ / YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ interface. Electron energy loss spectroscopy indicates an increased 3d band occupation of…
A heterostructure comprised of a 2.7 nm (7 unit-cell) thick layer of the metallic ferromagnet La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) and two 50 nm thick layers of the high-temperature superconductor YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO3 by pulsed-laser deposition was characterized by magnetization measurements and spherical-aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The saturation magnetization is about half of that in bulk La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3). A massive reduction of the magnetization previously inferred from sputter-deposited La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3)-YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7)…
The issue of interlayer exchange coupling in magnetic multilayers with superconducting (SC) spacer is addressed in La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) - YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO) - La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) epitaxial trilayers through resistivity, ac-susceptibility and magnetization measurements. The ferromagnetic (FM) LSMO layers possessing in-plane magnetization suppress the critical temperature (T$_{c})$ of the c-axis oriented YBCO thin film spacer. The superconducting order, however, survives even in very thin layers (thickness d$_{Y} \sim $ 50 Å, $\sim $ 4 unit cells…
Using neutron reflectometry and resonant x-ray techniques we studied the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) in superlattices composed of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and ferromagnetic-metallic (FM-M) La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) or ferromagnetic-insulating (FM-I) LaMnO$_{3+δ}$ (LMO). We find that the MPE strongly depends on the electronic state of the manganite layers, being pronounced for the FM-M LCMO and almost absent for FM-I LMO. We also detail the change of the magnetic depth profile due to the MPE and provide evidence for its intrinsic nature.
With x-ray absorption spectroscopy we investigated the orbital reconstruction and the induced ferromagnetic moment of the interfacial Cu atoms in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (YBCO/LCMO) and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (LSCO/LCMO) multilayers. We demonstrate that these electronic and magnetic proximity effects are coupled and are common to these cuprate/manganite multilayers. Moreover, we show that they are closely linked to a specific interface termination with a direct Cu-O-Mn bond. We furthermore show that the intrinsic hole doping of the cuprat…
We present a study of interlayer coupling and proximity effects in a La$_{0.66}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$(10 nm)/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$(10 nm) superlattice. Using element-sensitive x-ray probes, the magnetic state of Mn can be probed without seeing the strong diamagnetism of the superconductor, which makes this approach ideal to study changes in the magnetic properties across the superconducting transition. By a combined experiment using {\it in situ} transport measurements during polarized soft x-ray measurements, we were able to see no noticeable influence of the superconducting state on the magnetic p…
Transport across an La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}MnO$_{3}/YBa$_{2}Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$(LSMO/YBCO), interface is studied as a function of temperature and surface morphology. For comparison, control measurements are performed in non-magnetic heterostructures of LaNiO$_{3}$/YBCO and Ag/YBCO. In all cases, YBCO is used as bottom layer to eliminate the channel resistance and to minimize thermal effects. The observed differential conductance re ects the role of Andreev bound states in a-b planes, and brings out for the first time the suppression of such states by the spin-polarized transport across the interface. …
Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between the in-plane Cu spins in YBa$_2$ Cu$_3$ O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) superconductor when it is grown on top of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ MnO$_3$ (LCMO) manganite layer. This coupling, present in both normal and superconducting states of YBCO, is sensitive to the interfacial termination such …
With x-ray absorption spectroscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry we studied how the magnetic proximity effect at the interface between the cuprate high-$T_C$ superconductor $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_7}$ (YBCO) and the ferromagnet $\mathrm{La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}$ (LCMO) is related to the electronic and magnetic properties of the LCMO layers. In particular, we explored how the magnitude of the ferromagnetic Cu moment on the YBCO side depends on the strength of the antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange coupling with the Mn moment on the LCMO side. We found that the Cu moment remains sizeable if the AF …
The temperature dependent redistribution of the spectral weight of the $CuO_2$ plane derived conduction band of the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.9}$ high temperature superconductor (T_c = 92.7 K) was studied with wide-band (from 0.01 to 5.6 eV) spectroscopic ellipsometry. A superconductivity - induced transfer of the spectral weight involving a high energy scale in excess of 1 eV was observed. Correspondingly, the charge carrier spectral weight was shown to decrease in the superconducting state. The ellipsometric data also provide detailed information about the evolution of the optical self-energy in the no…
Using polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) we have investigated a YBa2Cu3O7(10nm)/La2/3Ca1/3MnO3(9nm)]10 (YBCO/LCMO) superlattice grown by pulsed laser deposition on a La0.3Sr0.7Al0.65Ta0.35O3 (LSAT) substrate. Due to the high structural quality of the superlattice and the substrate, the specular reflectivity signal extends with a high signal-to-background ratio beyond the fourth order superlattice Bragg peak. This allows us to obtain more detailed and reliable information about the magnetic depth profile than in previous PNR studies on similar superlattices that were partially impeded by pro…
The hypothesis regarding the existence of uncorrelated pre-formed pairs in the pseudogap regime of superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ is tested experimentally using bilayers of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ and the itinerant ferromagnet $SrRuO_3$. In our study, we monitor the influence of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ on $T_p$, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature of $SrRuO_3$. Here, $T_p$ is the temperature of maximum dM/dT or dR/dT where M and R are the magnetization and resistance of $SrRuO_3$, respectively. We compare the results with similar measurements carried out on bilayers of $La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4-y}$, $Au$ and…
Thus far, there is no cuprate system where both n-type and p-type charge carriers can be doped without changing the crystallographic structure. For studying the electron-hole symmetry in an identical structure, we try to dope n-type carriers to YBa2Cu3Oy system by reducing oxygen content and substituting La3+ ions for Ba2+. Single crystals of La-doped YBa2Cu3Oy are grown by a flux method with Y2O3 crucibles and it is confirmed that La actually substitutes \~13% of Ba. The oxygen content y can be varied between 6.21 and 6.95 by annealing the crystals in an atmosphere with controlled oxygen part…
Recently, A. V. Boris and colleagues claimed to deduce a decrease of intraband spectral weight (SW), and a transfer of SW from intraband to inter-band frequencies, when optimally-doped or slightly underdoped cuprates become superconducting [A. V. Boris et al., Science 304, p. 708 (2004)]. We show that, while their data agree with others [H. J. A. Molegraaf et al., Science 295, p. 2239 (2002) ; A.F. Santander-Syro et al., Europhys.Lett 62, p. 568 (2003)], their analysis is flawed. They cannot disprove the results which yield a superconductivity-induced increase of intraband SW, and a transfer o…
Epitaxial thin films of charge-ordered Pr$_{0.625}$Ca$_{0.375}$MnO$_{3}$ have been studied using variable temperature Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS). The as grown films were found to be granular while the annealed films show atomic terraces at all temperatures and are found to be electronically homogeneous in 78-300K temperature range. At high temperatures (T$>$T$_{CO}\approx$ 230 K) the local tunnel spectra of the annealed films show a depression in the density of states (DOS) near Fermi energy implying a pseudogap with a significant DOS at E$_F$. The gap feature bec…
We report hole and electron doping in La-doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$(YBCO) thin films synthesized by pulsed laser deposition technique and subsequent \emph{in-situ} postannealing in oxygen ambient and vaccum. The $n$-type samples show a metallic behavior below the Mott limit and a high carrier density of $\sim2.8$ $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$ at room temperature (\emph{T}) at the optimally reduced condition. The in-plane resistivity ($ρ$$_{ab}$) of the $n$-type samples exhibits a quadratic \emph{T} dependence in the moderate-\emph{T} range and shows an anomaly at a relatively higher \emph{T} prob…
Presently, cerium-doped LaMnO$_3$ is vividly discussed as an electron-doped counterpart prototype to the well-established hole-doped mixed-valence manganites. Here, La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ thin films of different thicknesses, degrees of CeO$_2$ phase segregation, and oxygen deficiency, grown on SrTiO$_3$ single crystal substrates, are compared with respect to their resistance-vs.-temperature (R vs. T) behavior from 300~K down to 90~K. While the variation of the film thickness (and thus the degree of epitaxial strain) in the range between 10~nm and 100~nm has only a weak impact on the elect…
The electronic density of states (DOS) of La$_{0.625}$Ca$_{0.375}$MnO$_3$(LCMO) strain free epitaxial thin films with an insulator-metal transition temperature (T$_{IM}$) of 250 K was probed using variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We find a depression in the DOS with a finite zero bias conductance (ZBC) signifying a pseudogap (PG) in 78-310 K temperature range. With cooling, the ZBC is found to increase indicating an increased DOS near E$_F$. We interpret PG as a signature of Jahn-Teller polarons while ZBC change, in agreement with the bulk insulator-metal tr…
The electron-phonon interaction is of central importance for the electrical and thermal properties of solids, and its influence on superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, and other many-body phenomena in correlated-electron materials is currently the subject of intense research. However, the non-local nature of the interactions between valence electrons and lattice ions, often compounded by a plethora of vibrational modes, present formidable challenges for attempts to experimentally control and theoretically describe the physical properties of complex materials. Here we report a Raman s…
The magneto-thermoelectric power (TEP) $ΔS(T,H)$ of perovskite type manganise oxide $La_{0.6}Y_{0.1}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ is found to exhibit a sharp peak at some temperature $T^{*}=170K$. By approximating the true shape of the measured magneto-TEP in the vicinity of $T^{*}$ by a linear triangle of the form $ΔS(T,H)\simeq S_p(H)\pm B^{\pm}(H)(T^{*}-T)$, we observe that $B ^{-}(H)\simeq 2B ^{+}(H)$. We adopt the electron localization scenario and introduce a Ginzburg-Landau (GL) type theory which incorporates the two concurrent phase transitions, viz., the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition at the …
The superconductor-to-insulator transition (SIT) induced by means such as external magnetic fields, disorder or spatial confinement is a vivid illustration of a quantum phase transition dramatically affecting the superconducting order parameter. In pursuit of a new realization of the SIT by interfacial charge transfer, we developed extremely thin superlattices composed of high $T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and colossal magnetoresistance ferromagnet La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO). By using linearly polarized resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dic…
An emerging area in condensed matter physics is the use of multilayered heterostructures to enhance ferroelectricity in complex oxides. Here, we demonstrate that optically pumping carriers across the interface between thin films of a ferroelectric (FE) insulator and a ferromagnetic metal can significantly enhance the FE polarization. The photoinduced FE state remains stable at low temperatures for over one day. This occurs through screening of the internal electric field by the photoexcited carriers, leading to a larger, more stable polarization state that may be suitable for applications in a…
Optical reflectivity spectra of La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (0<=x<=0.30) were measured on cleavage surfaces of single crystals. The optical conductivity $σ(w) of ferromagnetic-metal La(0.70)Sr(0.30)MnO(3) is characterized by a Drude-like - but not simple Drude - component with large spectral weight below 1.6 eV, which yields a large effective carrier number N*_eff consistent with the results of Hall coefficient and specific heat measurements. The present result demonstrates that the previous result of "small Drude weight" originates from the damage of the sample surface. The Sr-substitution effect on t…
We present magneto-transport calculations for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) materials to show that the electron-like metallic chain state gives both the negative Hall effect and in-plane anisotropic large Nernst signal. We show that the inevitable presence of the metallic 1D CuO chain layer lying between the CuO2 bilayers in YBCO renders an electron-like Fermi surface in the doping range as wide as p=0.05 to overdoping. With underdoping, a pseudogap opening in the CuO2 state reduces its hole-carrier contribution, and therefore the net electron-like quasiparticles dominate the transport propert…
The transport and magnetic properties of correlated La{0.53}Sr{0.47}MnO{3} ultrathin films, grown epitaxially on SrTiO{3}, show a sharp cusp at the structural transition temperature of the substrate. Using a combination of experiment and theory we show that the cusp is a result of resonant coupling between the charge carriers in the film and a soft phonon mode in the SrTiO{3}, mediated through oxygen octahedra in the film. The amplitude of the mode diverges towards the transition temperature, and phonons are launched into the first few atomic layers of the film affecting its electronic state.
We have characterized the vertical transport properties of epitaxial layered structures composed of Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (PCMO) sandwiched between SrRuO$_{3}$ (SRO) bottom electrode and several kinds of top electrodes such as SRO, Pt, Au, Ag, and Ti. Among the layered structures, Ti/PCMO/SRO is distinct due to a rectifying current-voltage ($I$--$V$) characteristic with a large hysteresis. Corresponding to the hysteresis of the $I$--$V$ characteristics, the contact resistance of the Ti/PCMO interface reversibly switches between two stable states by applying pulsed voltage stress. We pr…
Optical conductivity spectra of La_{0.7-y}Pr_{y}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3 were systematically investigated. For metallic samples, the spectral weight below 0.5 eV, whose magnitude can be represented by the effective carrier number N_{eff}(0.5 eV), increases as temperature becomes lower. Regardless of the Pr doping, all the measured values of N_{eff}(0.5 eV)/T_C fall into one scaling curve. This scaling behavior could be explained by the theoretical model by Roeder et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1356 (1996)], which includes spin double exchange and Jahn-Teller lattice coupling to holes. With the Pr doping, f…
Transition metal oxides are well known for their complex magnetic and electrical properties. When brought together in heterostructure geometries, they show particular promise for spintronics and colossal magnetoresistance applications. In this letter, we propose a new mechanism for the coupling between layers of itinerant ferromagnetic materials in heterostructures. The coupling is mediated by charge carriers that strive to maximally delocalize through the heterostructure to gain kinetic energy. In doing so, they force a ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic coupling between the constituent layer…
Carrier injection performed in oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO) hetero-structure junctions exhibited tunable resistance that was entirely different with behaviors of semiconductor devices. Tunable superconductivity in YBCO junctions, increasing over 20 K in transition temperature, has achieved by using electric processes. To our knowledge, this is the first observation that intrinsic property of high TC superconductors superconductivity can be adjusted as tunable functional parameters of devices. The fantastic phenomenon caused by carrier injection was discussed based on a proposed charge carr…
Colossal negative magnetoresistance Δρ(T,B) observed in La(0.6)Y(0.1)Ca(0.3)MnO(3) at B=1T shows a nearly perfect symmetry around T_0=160K suggesting a universal field-induced transport mechanism in this material. Attributing this symmetry to strong magnetic fluctuations (triggered by the Y substitution and further enhanced by magnetic field, both above and below the field-dependent Curie temperature T_C(B)=T_0), the data are interpreted in terms of the nonthermal spin hopping and magnetization M dependent charge carrier localization scenario leading to Δρ(T,B)= -ρ_s(1-exp(-γM^2)) with M(T,B)=…
We show that in Pr$ _{0.5} $La$ _{0.2} $Ca$ _{0.3} $MnO$ _{3} $/YBa$ _{2} $Cu$ _{3} $O$ _{7} $ (PLCMO/YBCO) multilayers the low temperature state of YBCO is very resistive and resembles the one of a granular superconductor or a frustrated Josephson-junction network. Notably, a coherent superconducting response can be restored with a large magnetic field which also suppresses the charge-orbital order in PLCMO. This coincidence suggests that the granular superconducting state of YBCO is induced by the charge-orbital order of PLCMO. The coupling mechanism and the nature of the induced inhomogeneo…
In the colossal magnetoresistance manganites polarons have been proposed as the charge carrier state which localizes across the metal-insulator transition. The character of the polarons is still under debate. We present an assessment of measurements which identify polarons in the metallic state of La{2/3}Sr{1/3}MnO{3} (LSMO) and La{2/3}Ca{1/3}MnO{3} (LCMO) thin films. We focus on optical spectroscopy in these films which displays a pronounced resonance in the mid-infrared. The temperature dependent resonance has been previously assigned to polaron excitations. These polaronic resonances are qu…
We examine the anomalous inverse spin switch behavior in La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO)/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO)/LCMO trilayers by combined transport studies and polarized neutron reflectometry. Measuring magnetization profiles and magnetoresistance in an in-plane rotating magnetic field, we prove that, contrary to many accepted theoretical scenarios, the relative orientation between the two LCMO's magnetizations is not sufficient to determine the magnetoresistance. Rather the field dependence of magnetoresistance is explained by the interplay between the applied magnetic field and th…

The pseudogap is a central puzzle of cuprate superconductors. Its connection to the Mott insulator at low doping $p$ remains ambiguous and its relation to the charge order that reconstructs the Fermi surface at intermediate $p$ is still unclear. Here we use measurements of the Hall coefficient in magnetic fields up to 88 T to show that Fermi-surface reconstruction by charge order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ ends sharply at a critical doping $p = 0.16$, distinctly lower than the pseudogap critical point at $p^* = 0.19$. This shows that pseudogap and charge order are separate phenomena. We then find t…
$\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_7/La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}$ superconducting/ferromagnetic (SC/FM) multilayers have been studied by neutron reflectometry. Evidence for a characteristic difference between the structural and magnetic depth profiles is obtained from the occurrence of a structurally forbidden Bragg peak in the FM state. The comparison with simulated reflectivity curves allows us to identify two possible magnetization profiles: a sizable magnetic moment within the SC layer antiparallel to the one in the FM layer (inverse proximity effect), or a ``dead'' region in the FM layer with zero net magnet…
Reflectivity as a function of temperature for the La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) film has been measured across the metal-insulator phase transition. The optical properties and their temperature dependence were determined in the infrared and visible range by fits to a Drude-Lorentz model, using exact formula for the thin film optics and the measured properties of the substrate. The phonon modes were identified and verified with lattice dynamical calculations for the ideal and distorted perovskite structure of the material. The optical conductivity shows agreement with the double exchang…
The unusual slow carrier relaxation dynamics - observed in femtosecond pump-probe experiments on high-temperature superconductors and recently also in a charge-density-wave system - is analyzed in terms of a model for relaxation of carriers in intra-gap states. The data on YBa_2Cu_3O_7-delta near optimum doping and K_0.3$MoO_3 are found to be described very well with the model using a BCS-like gap which closes at T_c. From the analysis of the data we conclude that a significant intra-gap density of localized states exists in these materials, which can be clearly distinguished from quasiparticl…
We have studied the chemical potential shift and changes in the electronic density of states near the Fermi level ($E_F$) as a function of carrier concentration in Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ (PCMO, $0.2 \le x \le 0.65$) through the measurements of photoemission spectra. The results showed that the chemical potential shift was suppressed for $x \agt 0.3$, where the charge exchange (CE)-type antiferromagnetic charge-ordered state appears at low temperatures. We consider this observation to be related to charge self-organization such as stripe formation on a microscopic scale in this composition ran…
The far-infrared dielectric response of superlattices (SL) composed of superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO) and ferromagnetic La$_{0.67}$% Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) has been investigated by ellipsometry. A drastic decrease of the free carrier response is observed which involves an unusually large length scale of d$^{crit}\approx $20 nm in YBCO and d$^{crit}\approx $10 nm in LCMO. A corresponding suppression of metallicity is not observed in SLs where LCMO is replaced by the paramagnetic metal LaNiO$_{3}$. Our data suggest that either a long range charge transfer from the YBCO to t…
Here we study the electronic properties of cuprate/manganite interfaces. By means of atomic resolution electron microscopy and spectroscopy, we produce a subnanometer scale map of the transition metal oxidation state profile across the interface between the high $T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and the colossal magnetoresistance compound (La,Ca)MnO$_3$. A net transfer of electrons from manganite to cuprate with a peculiar non-monotonic charge profile is observed. Model calculations rationalize the profile in terms of the competition between standard charge transfer tendencies (due t…
Modulation of charge carrier dynamics and hence electrical conductivity of solids by photoexcitation has been a rich field of research with numerous applications. Similarly, electric and magnetic field assisted enhancement of conductivity are of fundamental importance and technological use. Hole doped manganites of the type (A$_{1-x}$B$_{x})$MnO$_{3}$, where A and B are rare and alkaline earth metals respectively have the distinction of showing all three effects. Here we establish the complementarity of the electric, magnetic and photon fields in driving an insulator-metal transition in epitax…
The interplay between charge density waves (CDWs) and high-temperature superconductivity is currently under intense investigation. Experimental research on this issue is difficult because CDW formation in bulk copper-oxides is strongly influenced by random disorder, and a long-range-ordered CDW state in high magnetic fields is difficult to access with spectroscopic and diffraction probes. Here we use resonant x-ray scattering in zero magnetic field to show that interfaces with the metallic ferromagnet La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ greatly enhance CDW formation in the optimally doped high-tempera…
We present a thorough and quantitative comparison of double-exchange models to experimental data on the colossal magnetoresistance manganese perovskites. Our results settle a controversy by showing that physics beyond double-exchange is important even in La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$, which has been regarded as a conventional double-exchange system. We show that the crucial quantity for comparisons of different calculations to each other and to data is the conduction band kinetic energy $K$, which is insensitive to the details of the band structure and can be experimentally determined from optic…
