In this paper we continue to explore "hybrid" quantum circuit models in one-dimension with both unitary and measurement gates, focussing on the entanglement properties of wavefunction trajectories at long times, in the steady state. We simulate a large class of Clifford circuits, including models with or without randomness in the unitary gates, and with or without randomness in the locations of measurement gates, using stabilizer techniques to access the long time dynamics of systems up to 512 qubits. In all models we find a volume law entangled phase for low measurement rates, which exhibits a sub-dominant logarithmic behavior in the entanglement entropy, $S_A = α \ln |A| + s|A|$, with sub-system size $|A|$. With increasing measurement rate the volume law phase is unstable to a disentangled area law phase, passing through a single entanglement transition at a critical rate of measurement. At criticality we find a purely logarithmic entanglement entropy, $S_A = α(p_c) \ln|A|$, a power law decay and conformal symmetry of the mutual information, with exponential decay off criticality. Various spin-spin correlation functions also show slow decay at criticality. Critical exponents are consistent across all models, indicative of a single universality class. These results suggest the existence of an effective underlying statistical mechanical model for the entanglement transition. Beyond Clifford circuit models, numerical simulations of up to 20 qubits give consistent results.
We study the level-spacing statistics in the entanglement spectrum of output states of random universal quantum circuits where qubits are subject to a finite probability of projection to the computational basis at each time step. We encounter two phase transitions with increasing projection rate: The first is the volume-to-area law transition observed in quantum circuits with projective measurements; The second separates the pure Poisson level statistics phase at large projective measurement rates from a regime of residual level repulsion in the entanglement spectrum within the area-law phase,…
We study the growth of genuine multipartite entanglement in random quantum circuit models, which include random unitary circuit models and the random Clifford circuit. We find that for the random Clifford circuit, the growth of multipartite entanglement remains slower in comparison to the random unitary case. However, the final saturation value of multipartite entanglement is almost the same in both cases. The behavior is then compared to the genuine multipartite entanglement obtained in random matrix product states with a moderately high bond dimension. We then relate the behavior of multipar…
Random quantum circuit is a minimally structured model to study the entanglement dynamics of many-body quantum systems. In this paper, we considered a one-dimensional quantum circuit with noisy Haar-random unitary gates using density matrix operator and tensor contraction methods. It is shown that the entanglement evolution of the random quantum circuits is properly characterized by the logarithmic entanglement negativity. By performing exact numerical calculations, we found that, as the physical error rate is decreased below a critical value $p_c\approx 0.056$, the logarithmic entanglement ne…
We study a class of (1+1)D symmetric random quantum circuits with two competing types of measurements in addition to random unitary dynamics. The circuit exhibits a rich phase diagram involving robust symmetry-protected topological (SPT), trivial, and volume law entangled phases, where the transitions are hidden to expectation values of operators and can only be accessed through the entanglement entropy averaged over quantum trajectories. In the absence of unitary dynamics, we find a purely measurement-induced critical point with logarithmic scaling of the entanglement entropy, which we map ex…
We address entanglement transitions in monitored random quantum circuits of non-interacting fermions, in particular, the question of whether Born-rule and forced measurements yield the same universality class. For a generic circuit with no symmetry other than fermion parity, acting on a one-dimensional Majorana chain, we numerically obtain several critical exponents, providing clear evidence that the two transitions with Born-rule and forced measurements are in different universality classes. We provide a theoretical understanding for our numerical results by identifying the underlying statist…
In local quantum circuits with charge conservation, we initialize the system in random product states and study the dynamics of the Renyi entanglement entropy $R_α$. We rigorously prove that $R_α$ with Renyi index $α>1$ at time $t$ is $\le O(\sqrt{t\ln t})$ if the transport of charges is diffusive. Very recent numerical results of Rakovszky et al. show that this upper bound is saturated (up to the sub-logarithmic correction) in random local quantum circuits with charge conservation.
Models for non-unitary quantum dynamics, such as quantum circuits that include projective measurements, have been shown to exhibit rich quantum critical behavior. There are many complementary perspectives on this behavior. For example, there is a known correspondence between d-dimensional local non-unitary quantum circuits and tensor networks on a D=(d+1)-dimensional lattice. Here, we show that in the case of systems of non-interacting fermions, there is furthermore a full correspondence between non-unitary circuits in d spatial dimensions and unitary non-interacting fermion problems with stat…
Clifford circuits are insufficient for universal quantum computation or creating $t$-designs with $t\ge 4$. While the entanglement entropy is not a telltale of this insufficiency, the entanglement spectrum is: the entanglement levels are Poisson-distributed for circuits restricted to the Clifford gate-set, while the levels follow Wigner-Dyson statistics when universal gates are used. In this paper we show, using finite-size scaling analysis of different measures of level spacing statistics, that in the thermodynamic limit, inserting a single T $(π/8)$ gate in the middle of a random Clifford ci…
We develop solvable models of large-$N$ hybrid quantum circuits on qubits and fermions with long-range power-law interactions and continuous local monitoring, which provide analytical access to the entanglement phase diagram and error-correcting properties of many-body entangled non-equilibrium states generated by such dynamics. In one dimension, the long-range coupling is irrelevant for $α>3/2$, where $α$ is the power-law exponent, and the models exhibit a conventional measurement-induced phase transition between volume- and area-law entangled phases. For $1/2<α<3/2$ the long-range coupling b…
We study the entanglement behavior of a random unitary circuit punctuated by projective measurements at the measurement-driven phase transition in one spatial dimension. We numerically study the logarithmic entanglement negativity of two disjoint intervals and find that it scales as a power of the cross-ratio. We investigate two systems: (1) Clifford circuits with projective measurements, and (2) Haar random local unitary circuit with projective measurements. Remarkably, we identify a power-law behavior of entanglement negativity at the critical point. Previous results of entanglement entropy …
Monitored quantum dynamics reveal quantum state trajectories which exhibit a rich phenomenology of entanglement structures, including a transition from a weakly-monitored volume law entangled phase to a strongly-monitored area law phase. For one-dimensional hybrid circuits with both random unitary dynamics and interspersed measurements, we combine analytic mappings to an effective statistical mechanics model with extensive numerical simulations on hybrid Clifford circuits to demonstrate that the universal entanglement properties of the volume law phase can be quantitatively described by a fluc…
The entanglement in operator space is a well established measure for the complexity of the quantum many-body dynamics. In particular, that of local operators has recently been proposed as dynamical chaos indicator, i.e. as a quantity able to discriminate between quantum systems with integrable and chaotic dynamics. For chaotic systems the local-operator entanglement is expected to grow linearly in time, while it is expected to grow at most logarithmically in the integrable case. Here we study local-operator entanglement in dual-unitary quantum circuits, a class of "statistically solvable" quan…
Monitored quantum circuits can exhibit an entanglement transition as a function of the rate of measurements, stemming from the competition between scrambling unitary dynamics and disentangling projective measurements. We study how entanglement dynamics in non-unitary quantum circuits can be enriched in the presence of charge conservation, using a combination of exact numerics and a mapping onto a statistical mechanics model of constrained hard-core random walkers. We uncover a charge-sharpening transition that separates different scrambling phases with volume-law scaling of entanglement, disti…
A quantum many-body system whose dynamics includes local measurements at a nonzero rate can be in distinct dynamical phases, with differing entanglement properties. We introduce theoretical approaches to measurement-induced phase transitions (MPT) and also to entanglement transitions in random tensor networks. Many of our results are for "all-to-all" quantum circuits with unitaries and measurements, in which any qubit can couple to any other, and related settings where some of the complications of low-dimensional models are reduced. We also propose field theory descriptions for spatially local…
Many-body unitary dynamics interspersed with repeated measurements display a rich phenomenology hallmarked by measurement-induced phase transitions. Employing feedback-control operations that steer the dynamics toward an absorbing state, we study the entanglement entropy behavior at the absorbing state phase transition. For short-range control operations, we observe a transition between phases with distinct sub-extensive scalings of entanglement entropy. In contrast, the system undergoes a transition between volume-law and area-law phases for long-range feedback operations. The fluctuations of…
The evolution of entanglement entropy in quantum circuits composed of Haar-random gates and projective measurements shows versatile behavior, with connections to phase transitions and complexity theory. We reformulate the problem in terms of a classical Markov process for the dynamics of bipartition purities and establish a probabilistic cellular-automaton algorithm to compute entanglement entropy in monitored random circuits on arbitrary graphs. In one dimension, we further relate the evolution of the entropy to a simple classical spin model that naturally generalizes a two-dimensional lattic…
We show that in a quantum system evolving unitarily under a stochastic quantum circuit the notions of irreversibility, universality of computation, and entanglement are closely related. As the state evolves from an initial product state, it gets asymptotically maximally entangled. We define irreversibility as the failure of searching for a disentangling circuit using a Metropolis-like algorithm. We show that irreversibility corresponds to Wigner-Dyson statistics in the level spacing of the entanglement eigenvalues, and that this is obtained from a quantum circuit made from a set of universal g…
We provide exact results for the dynamics of local-operator entanglement in quantum circuits with two-dimensional wires featuring ultralocal solitons, i.e. single-site operators which, up to a phase, are simply shifted by the time evolution. We classify all circuits allowing for ultralocal solitons and show that only dual-unitary circuits can feature moving ultralocal solitons. Then, we rigorously prove that if a circuit has an ultralocal soliton moving to the left (right), the entanglement of local operators initially supported on even (odd) sites saturates to a constant value and its dynamic…
Time evolution of quantum many-body systems typically leads to a state with maximal entanglement allowed by symmetries. Two distinct routes to impede entanglement growth are inducing localization via spatial disorder, or subjecting the system to non-unitary evolution, e.g., via projective measurements. Here we employ the idea of space-time rotation of a circuit to explore the relation between systems that fall into these two classes. In particular, by space-time rotating unitary Floquet circuits that display a localization transition, we construct non-unitary circuits that display a rich varie…
The process by which open quantum systems thermalize with an environment is both of fundamental interest and relevant to noisy quantum devices. As a minimal model of this process, we consider a qudit chain evolving under local random unitaries and local depolarization channels. After mapping to a statistical mechanics model, the depolarization (noise) acts like a symmetry-breaking field, and we argue that it causes the system to thermalize within a timescale independent of system size. We show that various bipartite entanglement measures -- mutual information, operator entanglement, and entang…

The central philosophy of statistical mechanics (stat-mech) and random-matrix theory of complex systems is that while individual instances are essentially intractable to simulate, the statistical properties of random ensembles obey simple universal "laws". This same philosophy promises powerful methods for studying the dynamics of quantum information in ideal and noisy quantum circuits -- for which classical description of individual circuits is expected to be generically intractable. Here, we review recent progress in understanding the dynamics of quantum information in ensembles of random qu…
We prepare two dimensional states generated by shallow circuits composed of (1) one layer of two-qubit CZ gate or (2) a few layers of two-qubit random Clifford gate. After measuring all of the bulk qubits, we study the entanglement structure of the remaining qubits on the one dimensional boundary. In the first model, we observe that the competition between the bulk X and Z measurements can lead to an entanglement phase transition between an entangled volume law phase and a disentangled area law phase. We numerically evaluate the critical exponents and generalize this idea to other qudit system…
Given an output wavefunction of a monitored quantum circuit consisting of both unitary gates and projective measurements, we ask whether two complementary subsystems are entangled or not. For Clifford circuits, we find that this question can be mapped to a certain classical error-correction problem where various entanglement measures can be explicitly computed from the recoverability. The dual classical code is constructed from spacetime patterns of out-of-time ordered correlation functions among local operators and measured Pauli operators in the past, suggesting that the volume-law entanglem…
Conservation laws can constrain entanglement dynamics in isolated quantum systems, manifest in a slowdown of higher Rényi entropies. Here, we explore this phenomenon in a class of long-range random Clifford circuits with U$(1)$ symmetry where transport can be tuned from diffusive to superdiffusive. We unveil that the different hydrodynamic regimes reflect themselves in the asymptotic entanglement growth according to $S(t) \propto t^{1/z}$, where the dynamical transport exponent $z$ depends on the probability $\propto r^{-α}$ of gates spanning a distance $r$. For sufficiently small $α$, we show…
We study a (1+1)-dimensional quantum circuit consisting of Haar-random unitary gates and projective measurements that conserve a total $U(1)$ charge and thus have $U(1)$ symmetry. In addition to a measurement-induced entanglement transition between a volume-law and an area-law entangled phase, we find a phase transition between two phases characterized by bipartite charge fluctuation growing with the subsystem size or staying constant. At this charge-fluctuation transition, steady-state quantities obtained by evolving an initial state with a definitive total charge exhibit critical scaling beh…
We study entanglement fluctuations and quantum error correction in the weakly monitored volume-law phase of quantum automaton circuits subject to repeated local measurements. We numerically observe that the entanglement entropy exhibits strong fluctuation with the exponent close to the ``growth exponent'' of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, the same as other local random circuits studied previously. We also investigate the dynamically generated quantum error correction code in the purification process and show that this model has different contiguous code distances for two typ…
Entanglement renormalization is a unitary real-space renormalization scheme. The corresponding quantum circuits or tensor networks are known as MERA, and they are particularly well-suited to describing quantum systems at criticality. In this work we show how to construct Gaussian bosonic quantum circuits that implement entanglement renormalization for ground states of arbitrary free bosonic chains. The construction is based on wavelet theory, and the dispersion relation of the Hamiltonian is translated into a filter design problem. We give a general algorithm that approximately solves this des…
We map the dynamics of entanglement in random unitary circuits, with finite on-site Hilbert space dimension $q$, to an effective classical statistical mechanics, and develop general diagrammatic tools for calculations in random unitary circuits. We demonstrate explicitly the emergence of a `minimal membrane' governing entanglement growth, which in 1+1D is a directed random walk in spacetime (or a variant thereof). Using the replica trick to handle the logarithm in the definition of the $n$th Rényi entropy $S_n$, we map the calculation of the entanglement after a quench to a problem of interact…
After quantum quenches in many-body systems, finite subsystems evolve non-trivially in time, eventually approaching a stationary state. In typical situations, the reduced density matrix of a given subsystem begins and ends this endeavour as a low-entangled vector in the space of operators. This means that if its operator space entanglement initially grows (which is generically the case), it must eventually decrease, describing a barrier-shaped curve. Understanding the shape of this "entanglement barrier" is interesting for three main reasons: (i) it quantifies the dynamics of entanglement in t…
Measurement-induced entanglement phase transitions, caused by the competition between entangling unitary dynamics and disentangling projective measurements, have been studied in various random circuit models in recent years. In this paper, we study the dynamics of averaged purity for a simple $N$-qudit Brownian circuit model with all-to-all random interaction and measurements. In the large-$N$ limit, our model is mapped to a one-dimensional quantum chain in the semi-classical limit, which allows us to analytically study critical behaviors and various other properties of the model. We show that…
Dual-unitary circuits have emerged as a minimal model for chaotic quantum many-body dynamics in which the dynamics of correlations and entanglement remains tractable. Simultaneously, there has been intense interest in the effect of measurements on the dynamics of quantum information in many-body systems. In this work we introduce a class of models combining dual-unitary circuits with particular projective measurements that allow the exact computation of dynamical correlations of local observables, entanglement growth, and steady-state entanglement. We identify a symmetry preventing a measureme…
In this article, we investigate the quantum circuit complexity and entanglement entropy in the recently studied black hole gas framework using the two-mode squeezed states formalism written in arbitrary dimensional spatially flat cosmological Friedmann-Lema$\hat{i}$tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background space-time. We compute the various complexity measures and study the evolution of these complexities by following two different prescriptions viz. Covariant matrix method and Nielsen's method. Independently, using the two-mode squeezed states formalism we also compute the Rényi and Von-Neumann …
