In this article we study the minimal time for the exact controllability of one-dimensional first-order linear hyperbolic systems when all the controls are acting on the same side of the boundary. We establish an explicit and easy-to-compute formula for this time with respect to all the coupling parameters of the system. The proof relies on the introduction of a canonical $UL$-decomposition and the compactness-uniqueness method.
In this paper, we study the local exact boundary controllability of entropy solutions to a class linearly degenerate hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with constant multiplicity. The authors prove the two-sided boundary controllability, one-sided boundary controllability and two-sided controllability with less controls, by applying the strategy used originally for classical solutions with essential modifications. Our constructive method is based on the well-posedness of semi-global solutions constructed by the limit of $ \e $-approximate front tracking solutions to the mixed initial-boun…
The general theory on exact boundary controllability for general first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems requires that the characteristic speeds of system do not vanish. This paper deals with exact boundary controllability, when this is not the case. Some important models are also shown as applications of the main result. The strategy uses the return method, which allows in certain situations to recover non zero characteristic speeds.
In this paper, we discuss our recent works on the null-controllability, the exact controllability, and the stabilization of linear hyperbolic systems in one dimensional space using boundary controls on one side for the optimal time. Under precise and generic assumptions on the boundary conditions on the other side, we first obtain the optimal time for the null and the exact controllability for these systems for a generic source term. We then prove the null-controllability and the exact controllability for any time greater than the optimal time and for any source term. Finally, for homogeneous …
In this paper we establish the theory on semiglobal classical solution to first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with a kind of nonlocal boundary conditions, and based on this, the corresponding exact boundary controllability and observability are obtained by a constructive method. Moreover, with the linearized Saint-Venant system and the 1-D linear wave equation as examples, we show that the number of both boundary controls and boundary observations can not be reduced, and consequently, we conclude that the exact boundary controllability for a hyperbolic system in a network with loop can …
The optimal time for the controllability of linear hyperbolic systems in one dimensional space with one-side controls has been obtained recently for time-independent coefficients in our previous works. In this paper, we consider linear hyperbolic systems with time-varying zero-order terms. We show the possibility that the optimal time for the null-controllability becomes significantly larger than the one of the time-invariant setting even when the zero-order term is indefinitely differentiable. When the analyticity with respect to time is imposed for the zero-order term, we also establish that…
For $α\in (0,2)$ we study the null controllability of the parabolic operator $$Pu= u_t - (\vert x \vert ^αu_x)_x\qquad (1<x<1),$$ which degenerates at the interior point $x=0$, for locally distributed controls acting only one side of the origin (that is, on some interval $(a,b)$ with $0<a<b<1$). Our main results guarantees that $P$ is null controllable if and only if it is weakly degenerate, that is, $α\in (0,1)$. So, in order to steer the system to zero, one needs controls to act on both sides of the point of degeneracy in the strongly degenerate case $α\in [1,2)$. Our approach is based on sp…
We are concerned about the controllability of a general linear hyperbolic system of the form $\partial_t w (t, x) = Σ(x) \partial_x w (t, x) + γC(x) w(t, x) $ ($γ\in \mR$) in one space dimension using boundary controls on one side. More precisely, we establish the optimal time for the null and exact controllability of the hyperbolic system for generic $γ$. We also present examples which yield that the generic requirement is necessary. In the case of constant $Σ$ and of two positive directions, we prove that the null-controllability is attained for any time greater than the optimal time for all…
In this article we study a controllability problem for a parabolic and a hyperbolic partial differential equations in which the control is the shape of the domain where the equation holds. The quantity to be controlled is the trace of the solution into an open subdomain and at a given time, when the right hand side source term is known. The mapping that associates this trace to the shape of the domain is nonlinear. We show (i) an approximate controllability property for the linearized parabolic problem and (ii) an exact local controllability property for the linearized and the nonlinear equati…
This paper is devoted to the controllability of a general linear hyperbolic system in one space dimension using boundary controls on one side. Under precise and generic assumptions on the boundary conditions on the other side, we previously established the optimal time for the null and the exact controllability for this system for a generic source term. In this work, we prove the null-controllability for any time greater than the optimal time and for any source term. Similar results for the exact controllability are also discussed.
In the present article we study the stabilization of first-order linear integro-differential hyperbolic equations. For such equations we prove that the stabilization in finite time is equivalent to the exact controllability property. The proof relies on a Fredholm transformation that maps the original system into a finite-time stable target system. The controllability assumption is used to prove the invertibility of such a transformation. Finally, using the method of moments, we show in a particular case that the controllability is reduced to the criterion of Fattorini.

This paper is devoted to study the cost of the null controllability for the Stokes system. Using the control transmutation method we show that the cost of driving the Stokes system to rest at time T is of order e^C/T when T -->0^+,i.e., the same order as for the heat equation. For this to be possible, we are led to study the exact controllability of one hyperbolic system with a resistance term, which will be done under assumptions on the control region.
We prove controllability results for abstract systems of weakly coupled $N$ evolution equations in cascade by a reduced number of boundary or locally distributed controls ranging from a single up to $N-1$ controls. We give applications to cascade coupled systems of $N$ multi-dimensional-hyperbolic, parabolic and diffusive equations.
We provide global and semi-global controllability results for hyperbolic conservation laws on a bounded domain, with a general (not necessarily convex)flux and a time-dependent source term acting as a control. The results are achieved for, possibly critical, both continuously differentiable states and BV states. The proofs are based on a combination of the return method and on the analysis of the Riccati equaiton for the space derivative of the solution.
In this work, we are interested in the small time global null controllability for the viscous Burgers' equation y_t - y_xx + y y_x = u(t) on the line segment [0,1]. The second-hand side is a scalar control playing a role similar to that of a pressure. We set y(t,1) = 0 and restrict ourselves to using only two controls (namely the interior one u(t) and the boundary one y(t,0)). In this setting, we show that small time global null controllability still holds by taking advantage of both hyperbolic and parabolic behaviors of our system. We use the Cole-Hopf transform and Fourier series to derive p…
We consider the finite-time stabilization of homogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic systems with one side controls and with nonlinear boundary condition at the other side. We present time-independent feedbacks leading to the finite-time stabilization in any time larger than the optimal time for the null controllability of the linearized system if the initial condition is sufficiently small. One of the key technical points is to establish the local well-posedness of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear, non-local boundary conditions.
For linear control systems in discrete time controllability properties are characterized. In particular, a unique control set with nonvoid interior exists and it is bounded in the hyperbolic case. Then a formula for the invariance pressure of this control set is proved.
In this article, we study the boundary null-controllability properties of the one-dimensional linearized (around $(Q_0,V_0)$ with constants $Q_0>0, V_0>0$) compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the interval $(0,1)$ when a control function is acting either on the density or velocity component at one end of the interval. We first prove that the linearized system, with a Dirichlet boundary control on the density component and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on the velocity component, is null-controllable in $H^s_{per}(0,1) \times L^2(0,1)$ for any $s > 1/2$ provided the time $T > 1$, …
We consider the linear degenerate wave equation, on the interval $(0, 1)$ $$ w_{tt} - (x^αw_x)_x = p(t) μ(x) w, $$ with bilinear control $p$ and Neumann boundary conditions. We study the controllability of this nonlinear control system, locally around a constant reference trajectory, the ground state. We prove that, generically with respect to $μ$, any target close to the ground state in the $H^3\times H^2$ topology (suitably adapted to the underlying degenerate operator) is reachable in time $T > \frac{4}{2-α}$, with controls in $L^2((0, T ),\mathbb R)$. Under some classical and generic assum…
This note introduces a new analytic approach to the solution of a very general class of finite-horizon optimal control problems formulated for discrete-time systems. This approach provides a parametric expression for the optimal control sequences, as well as the corresponding optimal state trajectories, by exploiting a new decomposition of the so-called extended symplectic pencil. Importantly, the results established in this paper hold under assumptions that are weaker than the ones considered in the literature so far. Indeed, this approach does not require neither the regularity of the symple…
We study the exact controllability, by a reduced number of controls, of coupled cascade systems of PDE's and the existence of exact insensitizing controls for the scalar wave equation. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the observability of abstract coupled cascade hyperbolic systems by a single observation, the observation operator being either bounded or unbounded. Our proof extends the two-level energy method introduced in \cite{sicon03, alaleau11} for symmetric coupled systems, to cascade systems which are examples of non symmetric coupled systems. In particular, we prove the…
This paper gives a summary of a body of work at the intersection of control theory and smooth nonlinear dynamics. The main idea is to transfer the concept of uniform hyperbolicity, central to the theory of smooth dynamical systems, to control-affine systems. Combining the strength of geometric control theory and the hyperbolic theory of dynamical systems, it is possible to deduce control-theoretic results of non-local nature that reveal remarkable analogies to the classical hyperbolic theory of dynamical systems. This includes results on controllability, robustness, and practical stabilizabili…
In this paper, we improve the known estimates for the invariance entropy of a nonlinear control system. For sets of complete approximate controllability we derive an upper bound in terms of Lyapunov exponents and for uniformly hyperbolic sets we obtain a similar lower bound. Both estimates can be applied to hyperbolic chain control sets, and we prove that under mild assumptions they can be merged into a formula.

The paper is concerned with the boundary controllability of entropy weak solutions to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. We prove a general result on the asymptotic stabilization of a system near a constant state. On the other hand, we give an example showing that exact controllability in finite time cannot be achieved, in general.
The aim of this notes is to give a concise introduction to control theory for systems governed by stochastic partial differential equations. We shall mainly focus on controllability and optimal control problems for these systems. For the first one, we present results for the exact controllability of stochastic transport equations, null and approximate controllability of stochastic parabolic equations and lack of exact controllability of stochastic hyperbolic equations. For the second one, we first introduce the stochastic linear quadratic optimal control problems and then the Pontryagin type m…
This paper is devoted to analysing the explicit slow decay rate and turnpike in the infinite-horizon linear quadratic optimal control problems for hyperbolic systems. Assume that some weak observability or controllability are satisfied, by which, the lower and upper bounds of the corresponding algebraic Riccati operator are estimated, respectively. Then based on these two bounds, the explicit slow decay rate of the closed-loop system with Riccati-based optimal feedback control is obtained. The averaged turnpike property for this problem is also further discussed. We then apply these results to…

In this work, we consider networks of so-called geometrically exact beams, namely, shearable beams that may undergo large motions. The corresponding mathematical model, commonly written in terms of displacements and rotations expressed in a fixed basis (Geometrically Exact Beam model, or GEB), has a quasilinear governing system. However, the model may also be written in terms of intrinsic variables expressed in a moving basis attached to the beam (Intrinsic GEB model, or IGEB) and while the number of equations is then doubled, the latter model has the advantage of being of first-order, hyperbo…
