A whole series of complementary studies have been performed on the same, single nanowire containing a quantum dot: cathodoluminescence spectroscopy and imaging, micro-photoluminescence spectroscopy under magnetic field and as a function of temperature, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry and imaging. The ZnTe nanowire was deposited on a Si 3 N 4 membrane with Ti/Al patterns. The complete set of data shows that the CdTe quantum dot features the heavy-hole state as a ground state, although the compressive mismatch strain promotes a light-hole ground state as soon as the aspect ratio is larger than unity (elongated dot). A numerical calculation of the whole structure shows that the transition from the heavy-hole to the light-hole configuration is pushed toward values of the aspect ratio much larger than unity by the presence of a (Zn,Mg)Te shell, and that the effect is further enhanced by a small valence band offset between the semiconductors in the dot and around it.
We investigate the switching kinetics of oxygen vacancies (Ov) diffusion in LPCMO-Ag memristive interfaces by performing experiments on the temperature dependence of the high resistance (HR) state under thermal cycling. Experimental results are well reproduced by numerical simulations based on thermally activated Ov diffusion processes and fundamental assumptions relying on a recent model proposed to explain bipolar resistive switching in manganite- based cells. The confident values obtained for activation energies and diffusion coefficient associated to Ov dynamics, constitute a validation te…
Memristive devices whose resistance can be hysteretically switched by electric field or current are intensely pursued both for fundamental interest as well as potential applications in neuromorphic computing and phase-change memory. When the underlying material exhibits additional charge or spin order, the resistive states can be directly coupled, further allowing for electrical control of the collective phases. Here, we report the observation of abrupt, memristive switching of tunneling current in nanoscale junctions of ultrathin CrI$_3$, a natural layer antiferromagnet. The coupling to spin …
We demonstrate stable and reversible current induced switching of large-area ($> 100\;μm^2$) antiferromagnetic domains in NiO/Pt by performing concurrent transport and magneto-optical imaging measurements in an adapted Kerr microscope. By correlating the magnetic images of the antiferromagnetic domain changes and magneto-transport signal response in these current-induced switching experiments, we disentangle magnetic and non-magnetic contributions to the transport signal. Our table-top approach establishes a robust procedure to subtract the non-magnetic contributions in the transport signal an…
We theoretically study the effect of a material defect (material void) on switching errors associated with magneto-elastic switching of magnetization in elliptical magnetostrictive nanomagnets having in-plane magnetic anisotropy. We find that the error probability increases significantly in the presence of the defect, indicating that magneto-elastic switching is particularly vulnerable to material imperfections. Curiously, there is a critical stress value that gives the lowest error probability in both defect-free and defective nanomagnets. The critical stress is much higher in defective nanom…
Combination of local heating and biasing at the tip-surface junction in temperature-assisted piezoresponse force microscopy (tPFM) opens the pathway for probing local temperature induced phase transitions in ferroics, exploring the temperature dependence of polarization dynamics in ferroelectrics, and potentially discovering coupled phenomena driven by strong temperature- and electric field gradients. Here, we analyze the signal formation mechanism in tPFM and explore the interplay between thermal- and bias-induced switching in model ferroelectric materials. We further explore the contribution…
We report manipulation of the magnetic states of elliptical cobalt magnetostrictive nanomagnets (of nominal dimensions ~ 340 nm x 270 nm x 12 nm) delineated on bulk 128° Y-cut lithium niobate with Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWs) launched from interdigitated electrodes. Isolated nanomagnets that are initially magnetized to a single domain state with magnetization pointing along the major axis of the ellipse are driven into a vortex state by surface acoustic waves that modulate the stress anisotropy of these nanomagnets. The nanomagnets remain in the vortex state until they are reset by a strong m…
Magneto-elastic (straintronic) switching of bistable magnetostrictive nanomagnets is an extremely energy-efficient switching methodology for (magnetic) binary switches that has recently attracted widespread attention because of its potential application in ultra-low-power digital computing hardware. Unfortunately, this modality of switching is also error very prone at room temperature. Theoretical studies of switching error probability of magneto-elastic switches have predicted probabilities ranging from 10E-8-10E-3 at room temperature for ideal, defect-free nanomagnets, but experiments with r…
We demonstrate the magnetically-induced transparency (MIT) effect in Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$(YIG)/Permalloy(Py) coupled bilayers. The measurement is achieved via a heterodyne detection of the coupled magnetization dynamics using a single wavelength that probes the magneto-optical Kerr and Faraday effects of Py and YIG, respectively. Clear features of the MIT effect are evident from the deeply modulated ferromagnetic resonance of Py due to the perpendicular-standing-spin-wave of YIG. We develop a phenomenological model that nicely reproduces the experimental results including the induced amplitude …
In magneto-optics the spin angular momentum $S_z$ of a sample is indirectly probed by the rotation angle and ellipticity, which are mainly determined by the off-diagonal susceptibility $χ^{(1)}_{xy}$. A direct and analytic relation between $S_z$ and $χ^{(1)}_{xy}$ is necessary and of paramount importance to the success of magneto-optics, but is often difficult to acquire since quantum mechanically the relation is hidden in the sum-over-states. Here we propose a new and simple model to establish such a much needed relation. Our model is based on the Hookean model, but includes spin-orbit coupli…
Employing oval shaped quantum billiards connected by quantum wires as the building blocks of a linear quantum dot array, we calculate the ballistic magnetoconductance in the linear response regime. Optimizing the geometry of the billiards, we aim at a maximal finite- over zero-field ratio of the magnetoconductance. This switching effect arises from a relative phase change of scattering states in the oval quantum dot through the applied magnetic field, which lifts a suppression of the transmission characteristic for a certain range of geometry parameters. It is shown that a sustainable switchin…
In this Letter we study the generation of quasi-static magnetic fields by the plasmon-induced inverse Faraday effect and propose a magneto-optical waveguide structure for achieving magnetization switching at sub-ps time in a nano-confined magneto-optical structure. In particular we show that the direction of the generated quasi-static field in a magneto-optical dielectric cavity side-coupled to a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide depends sensitively on the wavelength of the surface plasmon polaritions (SPP). This phenomenon could open up a new energy-efficient ultrafast method for nano-con…
We propose an all-electric implementation of a precessionally switched perpendicular magnetic anisotropy magneto-tunneling-junction (p-MTJ) based toggle memory cell where data is written with voltage-controlled-magnetic-anisotropy (VCMA) without requiring an in-plane magnetic field. The soft layer of the MTJ is a two-phase (magnetostrictive/piezoelectric) multiferroic which is electrically stressed to produce an effective in-plane magnetic field around which the magnetization precesses to complete a flip when the VCMA voltage pulse duration and the stress duration are independently adjusted to…
Magneto-optical transitions between Landau levels can provide precise spectroscopic information on the electronic structure and excitation spectra of graphene, enabling probes of substrate and many-body effects. We calculate the magneto-optical conductivity of large-size graphene flakes using a tight-binding approach. Our method allows us to directly compare the magneto-optical response of an isolated graphene flake with one aligned on hexagonal boron nitride giving rise to a periodic superlattice potential. The substrate interaction induces band gaps away from the Dirac point. In the presence…
The temporal evolution of the magnetization vector of a single-domain magnetostrictive nanomagnet, subjected to in-plane stress, is studied by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The stress is ramped up linearly in time and the switching delay, which is the time it takes for the magnetization to flip, is computed as a function of the ramp rate. For high levels of stress, the delay exhibits a non-monotonic dependence on the ramp rate, indicating that there is an {\it optimum} ramp rate to achieve the shortest delay. For constant ramp rate, the delay initially decreases with increasing…
We probe electronic excitations between Landau levels in freestanding $N-$layer graphene over a broad energy range, with unprecedented spectral and spatial resolution, using micro-magneto Raman scattering spectroscopy. A characteristic evolution of electronic bands in up to five Bernal-stacked graphene layers is evidenced and shown to remarkably follow a simple theoretical approach, based on an effective bilayer model. $(N>3)$-layer graphene appear as appealing candidates in the quest for novel phenomena, particularly in the quantum Hall effect regime. Our work paves the way towards minimally-…
Low-frequency 1/f voltage noise has been employed to probe stochastic charge dynamics in AlO$_{x}$-based non-volatile resistive memory devices exhibiting both resistive switching (RS) and magneto-resistive (MR) effects. A 1/f$^γ$ noise power spectral density is observed in a wide range of applied voltage biases. By analyzing the experimental data within the framework of Hooge's empirical relation, we found that the Hooge's parameter $α$ and the exponent $γ$ exhibit a distinct variation upon the resistance transition from the low resistance state (LRS) to the high resistance state (HRS), provid…
The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation, used to model magneto-dynamics in ferromagnets, tacitly assumes that the angular momentum associated with spin precession can relax instantaneously when the real or effective magnetic field causing the precession is turned off. This neglect of "spin inertia" is unphysical and would violate energy conservation. Recently, the LLG equation was modified to account for inertia effects. The consensus, however, seems to be that such effects would be unimportant in slow magneto-dynamics that take place over time scales much longer that the relaxation time of…
We show how the magneto-phonon resonance, particularly pronounced in sp2 carbon allotropes, can be used as a tool to probe the band structure of multilayer graphene specimens. Even when electronic excitations cannot be directly observed, their coupling to the E2g phonon leads to pronounced oscillations of the phonon feature observed through Raman scattering experiments with multiple periods and amplitudes detemined by the electronic excitation spectrum. Such experiment and analysis have been performed up to 28T on an exfoliated 4-layer graphene specimen deposited on SiO2, and the observed osci…
We present magnetoresistance (MR) experiments on an InAs nanowire quantum dot device with two ferromagnetic sidegates (FSGs) in a split-gate geometry. The wire segment can be electrically tuned to a single dot or to a double dot regime using the FSGs and a backgate. In both regimes we find a strong MR and a sharp MR switching of up to 25\% at the field at which the magnetizations of the FSGs are inverted by the external field. The sign and amplitude of the MR and the MR switching can both be tuned electrically by the FSGs. In a double dot regime close to pinch-off we find {\it two} sharp trans…
The interplay between spin and charge in solids is currently among the most discussed topics in condensed matter physics. Such interplay gives rise to magneto-electric coupling, which in the case of solids was named magneto-electric effect, as predicted by Curie on the basis of symmetry considerations. This effect enables the manipulation of magnetization using electrical field or, conversely, the manipulation of electrical polarization by magnetic field. The latter is known as the magnetocapacitance effect. Here, we show that non-equilibrium spin accumulation can induce tunnel magnetocapacita…
The resonant interaction of electrically excited travelling surface acoustic waves and magnetization has been hitherto probed through the acoustic component. In this work it is investigated using time-resolved magneto-optical detection of magnetization dynamics. To that end, we develop an experimental scheme where laser pulses are used both to generate the acoustic wave frequency and to probe magnetization dynamics thus ensuring perfect phase locking. The light polarization dependence of the signal enables to disentangle elasto-optic and magneto-optic contributions and to obtain the in-plane a…
Magneto-elastic (or "straintronic") switching has emerged as an extremely energy-efficient mechanism for switching the magnetization of magnetostrictive nanomagnets in magnetic memory, logic and non-Boolean circuits. Here, we investigate the ultrafast magneto-dynamics associated with straintronic switching in a single quasi-elliptical magnetostrictive Co nanomagnet deposited on a piezoelectric PMN-PT substrate using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) measurements. The pulsed laser pump beam in the TR-MOKE plays a dual role: it causes precession of the nanomagnet's magnetizatio…
Recently, signatures of quantum anomalous Hall states with spontaneous ferromagnetism were observed in twisted bilayer graphenes (TBGs) near 3/4 filling [1, 2]. Importantly, it was demon-strated that an extremely small current can switch the direction of the magnetization. This offers the prospect of realizing low energy dissipation magnetic memories. However, the mechanism of the current-driven magnetization switching is poorly understood as the charge currents in graphene layers are generally believed to be non-magnetic. In this work, we demonstrate that, in TBGs, the twist-induced reduction…
We perform a magneto-infrared spectroscopy study of the semiconductor to semimetal transition of InAs/GaSb double quantum wells from the normal to the inverted state. We show that owing to the low carrier density of our samples (approaching the intrinsic limit), the magneto-absorption spectra evolve from a single cyclotron resonance peak in the normal state to multiple absorption peaks in the inverted state with distinct magnetic field dependence. Using an eight-band Pidgeon-Brown model, we explain all the major absorption peaks observed in our experiment. We demonstrate that the semiconductor…
We present a magneto-Raman study on high-quality single-layer graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) that is fully encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride by a dry transfer technique. By analyzing the Raman D, G, and 2D peaks, we find that the structural quality of the samples is comparable to state-of-the-art exfoliated graphene flakes. From B field dependent Raman measurements, we extract the broadening and associated lifetime of the G peak due to anharmonic effects. Furthermore, we determine the decay width and lifetime of Landau level (LL) transitions from magneto-phonon resonan…
In this work we investigate magneto-optical properties of two-dimensional semiconductor quantum-ring excitons with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions threaded by a magnetic flux perpendicular to the plane of the ring. By calculating the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm spectrum, we study the Coulomb and spin-orbit effects on the Aharonov-Bohm features. From the light-matter interactions of the excitons, we find that for scalar excitons, there are open channels for spontaneous recombination resulting in a bright photoluminescence spectrum, whereas the forbidden recombination of dipolar excit…

In two-dimensional topological insulators, such as inverted HgTe/CdTe quantum wells, helical quantum spin Hall (QSH) states persist even at finite magnetic fields below a critical magnetic field $B_\mathrm{c}$, above which only quantum Hall (QH) states can be found. Using linear-response theory, we theoretically investigate the magneto-optical properties of inverted HgTe/CdTe quantum wells, both for infinite two-dimensional and finite-strip geometries, and possible signatures of the transition between the QSH and QH regimes. In the absorption spectrum, several peaks arise due to non-equidistan…

We study correlated switchings of superconducting nanobridge probed with train of current pulses. For pulses with low repetition rate each pulse transits the superconducting bridge to normal state with probability $P$ independent of the outcomes in the preceding pulses. We show that with reduction of the time interval between pulses long range correlation between pulses occurs: stochastic switching in a single pulse rises temperature of the bridge and affects outcome of the probing for next pulses. As a result, an artificial intricate stochastic process with adjustable strength of correlation …
We study the quantum Hall liquid and the metal-insulator transition in a high mobility two dimensional electron gas, by means of photoluminescence and magneto-transport. In the integer and fractional regime at nu > 1/3, analyzing the emission energy dispersion we probe the magneto-Coulomb screening and the hidden symmetry of the electron liquid. In the fractional regime above above nu =1/3 the system undergoes the metal-to-insulator transition, and in the insulating phase the dispersion becomes linear with evidence of an increased renormalized mass.
A phenomenological model is constructed, that captures the effects of coupling magnetic and elastic degrees of freedom, in the presence of external, stochastic perturbations, in terms of the interaction of magnetic moments with a bath, whose individual degrees of freedom cannot be resolved and only their mesoscopic properties are relevant. In the present work, the consequences of identifying the effects of dissipation as resulting from interactions with a bath of spins are explored, in addition to elastic, degrees of freedom. The corresponding stochastic differential equations are solved numer…
