We find supersymmetric extensions of the half-BPS soliton-impurity models in (1+1) dimensions which preserve half of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry. This is related to the fact that in the bosonic sector (i.e., the half-BPS soliton-impurity model), only one soliton (for example, the kink) is a BPS configuration which solves the pertinent Bogomolnyi equation and saturates the topological energy bound. On the other hand, the topological charge conjugate state (the antikink) is not a BPS solution. This means that it obeys the full Euler-Lagrange equation and does not saturate the topological energy bound. The supersymmetric approach also allows us to construct half-BPS soliton-impurity models in (2+1) dimensions. Concretely, in the case of the $CP^1$ model, its BPS impurity generalisation preserves one-quarter of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY, while for the Abelian Higgs model at critical coupling both impurity generalisations preserving one-quarter (the case of a new, so-called Higgs impurity) as well as one-half of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY (the case of the previously known magnetic impurity) are possible. We also discuss a possible relation between the BPS $CP^1$-impurity model and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction energy.
We show that the BPS Skyrme model, as well as its (2+1) dimensional baby version (restricted), can be coupled with an impurity in the BPS preserving manner. The corresponding Bogomolny equations are derived.
The $ϕ^4$ model is coupled to an impurity in a way that preserves one-half of the BPS property. This means that the antikink-impurity bound state is still a BPS solution, i.e., a zero-pressure solution saturating the topological energy bound. The kink-impurity bound state, on the other hand, does not saturate the bound, in general. We found that, although the impurity breaks translational invariance, it is, in some sense, restored in the BPS sector where the energy of the antikink-impurity solution does not depend on their mutual distance. This is reflected in the existence of a generalised tr…
We continue the investigation of supersymmetric extensions of baby Skyrme models in d=2+1 dimensions. In a first step, we show that the CP(1) form of the baby Skyrme model allows for the same N=1 SUSY extension as its O(3) formulation. Then we construct the N=1 SUSY extension of the gauged baby Skyrme model, i.e., the baby Skyrme model coupled to Maxwell electrodynamics. In a next step, we investigate the issue of N=2 SUSY extensions of baby Skyrme models. We find that all gauged and ungauged submodels of the baby Skyrme model which support BPS soliton solutions allow for an N=2 extension such…
We find a family of (half) self-dual impurity models such that the self-dual (BPS) sector is exactly solvable, for any spatial distribution of the impurity, both in the topologically trivial case and for kink (or antikink) configurations. This allows us to derive the metric on the corresponding one-dimensional moduli space in an analytical form. Also the generalized translational symmetry is found in an exact form. This symmetry provides a motion on moduli space which transforms one BPS solution into another. Finally, we analyse exactly how vibrational properties (spectral modes) of the BPS so…
A state saturating a BPS bound derived from a supersymmetry algebra preserves some fraction of the supersymmetry. This fraction of supersymmetry depends on the charges carried by the system, and we show that in general there are configurations of charges for which a BPS state would preserve more than half the original supersymmetry. We investigate configurations that could preserve 3/4 supersymmetry in string theory, M-theory and supersymmetric field theories and discuss whether states saturating these bounds actually occur in these theories.
In this paper we extend the boundary string field theory action for a non-BPS D-brane to the one including the target space fermions and the nonlinear supersymmetry with 32 supercharges up to some order. This is based on the idea that the vacuum with a non-BPS D-brane belongs to the spontaneously broken phase of the supersymmetry. As a result, we find that the action is almost uniquely determined up to the field redefinition ambiguities.
We consider 10-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory with topological terms compactified on a noncommutative torus. We calculate supersymmetry algebra and derive BPS energy spectra from it. The cases of d-dimensional tori with d=2,3,4 are considered in full detail. SO(d,d|Z)-invariance of the BPS spectrum and relation of new results to the previous work in this direction are discussed.
We study a fermion field coupled to a scalar via a Yukawa term. The scalar field is the $ϕ^4$ model with an impurity that preserves half of the BPS property. We analyze the spectrum of the defects of the model and collisions between them both close to the BPS regime and not. As the fermion binds to these defects, it may be transferred from one to the other, which we quantify via overlaps, known as Bogoliubov coefficients. BPS collisions are less likely to transfer the fermion between defects and can be adiabatic for non-relativistic velocities, especially for small coupling constants. Moreover…
BPS representations of 5-dimensional supersymmetry algebras are classified. For BPS states preserving 1/2 the supersymmetry, there are two distinct classes of multiplets for N=4 supersymmetry and three classes for N=8 supersymmetry. For N=4 matter theories, the two 1/2 supersymmetric BPS multiplets are the massive vector multiplet and the massive self-dual 2-form multiplet. Some applications to super-Yang-Mills, supergravity and little string theories are considered.
We report on duality invariant constraints, which allow a classification of BPS black holes preserving different fractions of supersymmetry. We then relate this analysis to the orbits of the exceptional groups $E_{6(6)}, E_{7(7)}$, relevant for black holes in five and four dimensions.
We investigate BPS properties of the charged soliton solutions of D-brane worldvolume theory, which is described by the supersymmetric Dirac-Born-Infeld action, by means of the N=2 target-space supersymmetry algebra. Our results agree with those obtained previously. We also extend our BPS analysis to the case where axion background exists.
In an earlier paper we gave the complete group-theoretical classification of BPS states of the N-extended D=4 conformal superalgebras su(2,2/N), but not all interesting cases were given in detail. In the present paper we spell out the interesting case of (1/N)-BPS and possibly protected states.
It is shown that a class of rotating strings in AdS_5 x S^5 with SO(6) angular momenta (J,J',J') preserve 1/8-supersymmetry for large J,J', in which limit they are effectively tensionless; when J=0, supersymmetry is enhanced to 1/4. These results imply that recent checks of the AdS/CFT correspondence actually test a nearly-BPS sector.
We find the combinations of momentum and domain-wall charges corresponding to BPS states preserving 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 of D=4 N=1 supersymmetry, and we show how the supersymmetry algebra implies their stability. These states form the boundary of the convex cone associated with the Jordan algebra of $4\times 4$ real symmetric matrices, and we explore some implications of the associated geometry. For the Wess-Zumino model we derive the conditions for preservation of 1/4 supersymmetry when one of two parallel domain-walls is rotated and in addition show that this model does not admit any classical c…
A self-dual generalization of the lump-impurity system is introduced. This model possesses lump-antilump-like pairs as static solutions of the pertinent Bogomolny equations. This allows for a moduli space approximation analysis of the BPS solutions which are identified as lump-antilump configurations. Some geometrical properties of the resulting moduli are analyzed. In addition, it is argued that, this type of impurity models can be interpreted as a limit of certain non-impurity theories.
A new class of six-dimensional asymmetric orientifolds is considered where the orientifold operation is combined with T-duality. The models are supersymmetric in the bulk, but the cancellation of the tadpoles requires the introduction of brane configurations that break supersymmetry. These can be described by D7-brane anti-brane pairs, non-BPS D8-branes or D9-brane anti-brane pairs. The transition between these different configurations and their stability is analysed in detail.
We use a multi-species supertube solution to construct an example of a scaling microstate geometry for non-BPS black rings in five dimensions. We obtain the asymptotic charges of the microstate geometry and show how the solution is related to the corresponding non-BPS black ring. The supersymmetry is broken in a very controlled manner using holonomy and this enables a close comparison with a scaling, BPS microstate geometry. Requiring that there are no closed time-like curves near the supertubes places additional restrictions on the moduli space of physical, non-BPS solutions when compared to …
In this paper, we continue our previous study of the low energy effective theory for D4-brane in the large C-field background. The gauge field part of the effective action was found in an earlier work. In this paper, we focus on the matter field part of the action and the supersymmetry transformation. Moreover, we calculate the central charges of super algebra and extensively study BPS solutions of this effective theory. The BPS states considered in this paper include light-like gauge field configurations, the F1 ending on D4 solution, tilted D4-brane, BPS solution with two types of magnetic c…
BPS equations and wall solutions are studied keeping (part of) supersymmetry (SUSY) manifest. Using N=1 superfields, massive hyper-Kahler quotient is introduced to obtain massive N=2 (8 SUSY) nonlinear sigma models in four dimensions with T*CP(n) target manifold, which yield BPS wall solutions for the n=1 case. We also describe massive hyper-Kahler quotient of T*CP(n) by using the harmonic superspace formalism which preserves all SUSY manifestly, and BPS equations and wall solutions are obtained in the n=1 case.
We continue our study of BPS equations and supersymmetric configurations in the Bagger-Lambert theory. The superalgebra allows three different types of central extensions which correspond to compounds of various M-theory objects: M2-branes, M5-branes, gravity waves and Kaluza-Klein monopoles which intersect or have overlaps with the M2-branes whose dynamics is given by the Bagger-Lambert action. As elementary objects they are all 1/2-BPS, and multiple intersections of $n$-branes generically break the supersymmetry into $1/2^n$, as it is well known. But a particular composite of M-branes can pr…
We give explicitly the reduction of supersymmetries of the positive energy unitary irreducible representations of the N-extended D=4 conformal superalgebras su(2,2/N). Further we give the classification of BPS and possibly protected states.
In the context of N=8 supergravity we construct the general form of BPS 0--branes that preserve either 1/2 or 1/4 of the original supersymmetry. We show how such solutions are related to suitable decompositions of the 70 dimensional solvable Lie algebra that describes the scalar field sector. We compare our new results to those obtained in a previous paper for the case of 1/8 supersymmetry preserving black holes. Each of the three cases is based on a different solvable Lie algebra decomposition and leads to a different structure of the scalar field evolution and of their fixed values at the ho…
The generic action for an N-extended superparticle in D-dimensional Minkowski spacetime is shown to have "hidden" supersymmetries (related by "dualities" to the manifest supersymmetries) such that the full supersymmetry algebra is BPS-saturated; the exceptions (which include, trivially, the massless case) are those for which the manifest supersymmetry algebra is already BPS-saturated. Moreover, it is shown that any "non-BPS" superparticle action is a gauge-fixed version of the "BPS" superparticle action for which all supersymmetries are manifest. An example is the N=1 massive D=10 superparticl…
The Noether currents associated with the non-linearly realized super-Poincare' symmetries of the Green-Schwarz (Nambu-Goto-Akulov-Volkov) action for a non-BPS p=2 brane embedded in a N=1, D=4 target superspace are constructed. The R symmetry current, the supersymmetry currents, the energy-momentum tensor and the scalar central charge current are shown to be components of a world volume supercurrent. The centrally extended superconformal transformations are realized on the Nambu-Goldstone boson and fermion fields of the non-BPS brane. The superconformal currents form supersymmetry multiplets wi…
We construct supersymmetric extensions for different Skyrme-like models in 3+1 dimensions. BPS equations and BPS bounds are obtained from supersymmetry in some cases. We discuss also the emergence of several Skyrme-like models from supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and Born-Infeld theory in 5 dimensions.
We consider the maximal supersymmetric pure Yang-Mills theories on six and eight dimensional space. We determine, in a systematic way, all the possible fractions of supersymmetry preserved by the BPS states and present the corresponding `self-dual' BPS equations. In six dimensions the intrinsic one has 1/4 supersymmetry, while in eight dimensions, 1/16, 2/16, ..., 6/16. We apply our results to some explicit BPS configurations of finite or infinite energy on commutative or noncommutative spaces.
We show the existence of a supersymmetry-breaking mechanism in string theory, where N=4 supersymmetry is broken spontaneously to N=2 and N=1 with moduli-dependent gravitino masses. The BPS spectrum of the theory with lower supersymmetry is in one-to-one correspondence with the spectrum of the heterotic N=4 string. The mass splitting of the N=4 spectrum depends on the moduli as well as the three R-symmetry charges. In the case of N=4 \to N=2, the perturbative N=2 prepotential is determined by the perturbative N=4 BPS states. This observation led us to suggest a method that determines the exact …
We review recent work (hep-th/0404114) on non-BPS domain walls in $5d$ SUSY theory. An exact solution of non-BPS multi-walls is found in supersymmetric massive T*(CP1) model in five dimensions. The non-BPS multi-wall solution is found to have no tachyon. The N=1 supersymmetry preserved on the four-dimensional world volume of one wall is broken by the coexistence of the other wall. The supersymmetry breaking is exponentially suppressed as the distance between the walls increases.
The half-BPS boundary conditions preserving $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetry in 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories are examined. The BPS equations admit decomposition of the bulk supermultiplets into specific boundary supermultiplets of preserved supersymmetry. Nahm-like equations arise in the vector multiplet BPS boundary condition preserving $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetry and Robin-type boundary conditions appear for the hypermultiplet coupled to vector multiplet when $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetry is preserved. The half-BPS boundary conditions ar…
We study supersymmetry of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions deformed in the Omega-background. We take the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the background so that two-dimensional super Poincare symmetry is recovered. We compute the deformed central charge of the superalgebra and study the 1/2 and 1/4 BPS states. We obtain the Omega-deformed 1/2 and 1/4 BPS dyon equations from the deformed supersymmetry transformation and the Bogomol'nyi completion of the energy.
In the thesis we analize different problems related to the supersymmetric extension of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. In chapter 2 we introduce the DBI action and show how it appears in string theory, we discuss also it's connection with Dp-branes. Chapter 3 is a self contained introduction to supersymmetry, with emphasis on BPS states. In chapter 4 we construct the N=2 supersymmetric extension of the Born-Infeld-Higgs in three space-time dimensions and discuss it's BPS states and Bogomol'nyi bounds. In chapter 5 we construct the N=1 supersymmetric extension of the non-abelian Born-Infeld theor…
We calculate near-horizon solutions for four-dimensional 4-charge and five-dimensional 3-charge black holes in heterotic string theory from the part of the ten-dimensional tree-level effective action which is connected to gravitational Chern-Simons term by supersymmetry. We obtain that the entropies of large black holes exactly match the alpha'-exact statistical entropies obtained from microstate counting (D=4) and AdS/CFT correspondence (D=5). Especially interesting is that we obtain agreement for both BPS and non-BPS black holes, contrary to the case of R^2-truncated (four-derivative) action…
We derive the Smarr formulae for two five-dimensional solutions of supergravity, which are asymptotically R^(1,3)xS^1; in particular, one has a magnetic bolt in its center, and one is a two-center solution. We show for both spacetimes that supersymmetry - and so the BPS-bound - is broken by the holonomy and how each topological feature of a space-like hypersurface enters Smarr's mass formula, with emphasis on the ones that give rise to the stated violation of the BPS-bound. In this light, we question if any violating extra-mass term in a spacetime with such asymptotics is only evident in the A…
Within the context of type I strings, we show the equivalence between BPS D9 branes with internal magnetic fluxes H_i in the three torii and non-BPS D3 branes with inverted internal magnetic fluxes 1/H_i. We then construct new supersymmetric examples of Z_2 x Z_2 orientifolds with discrete torsion which in the past had only non-supersymmetric solutions and emphasize the role of new twisted tadpole cancellation conditions, arising in the presence of magnetic fields, in order to get a consistent spectrum. In a second and independent part of the paper, we construct a new nine-dimensional type IIB…
Domain-wall solutions in four-dimensional supersymmetric field theories with distinct discrete vacuum states lead to the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry, either completely or partially. We consider in detail the case when the domain walls are the BPS-saturated states, and 1/2 of supersymmetry is preserved. Several useful criteria that relate the preservation of 1/2 of supersymmetry on the domain walls to the central extension appearing in the N=1 superalgebras are established. We explain how the central extension can appear in N=1 supersymmetry and explicitly obtain the central charge in…
We obtain, in a systematic way, all the classical BPS equations which correspond to the quantum BPS states in the M-theory on a fully supersymmetric pp-wave. The superalgebra of the M-theory matrix model shows that the BPS states always preserve pairs of supersymmetry, implying the possible fractions of the unbroken supersymmetry as 2/16, 4/16, 6/16,.... We study their classical counterparts, and find there are essentially one unique set of 2/16 BPS equations, three inequivalent types of 4/16 BPS equations, and three inequivalent types of 8/16 BPS equations only, in addition to the 16/16 stati…
We analyze the supersymmetry transformations of gauged $SO(4)$ supergravity coupled to extra hypermultiplets in three dimensions, and find large families of smooth BPS solutions that preserve four supersymmetries. These BPS solutions are part of the consistent truncation of some families of six-dimensional superstrata. From the three-dimensional perspective, these solutions give rise to "smoothly-capped BTZ" geometries. We show how the twisting of the spin connection, the holomorphy of the fields, and the Chern-Simons connections all play an essential role in the existence of these supersymmet…
Electrically charged solutions breaking half of the supersymmetry in Anti-De Sitter four dimensional N=2 supergravity coupled to vector supermultiplets are constructed. These static black holes live in an asymptotic $AdS_4$ space-time. The Killing spinor, i. e., the spinor for supersymmetry variation is explicitly constructed for these solutions.
We derive the Bogomol'nyi equations for supersymmetric Abelian F-term cosmic strings in four-dimensional flat space and show that, contrary to recent statements in the literature, they are BPS states in the Bogomol'nyi limit, but the partial breaking of supersymmetry is from N=2. The second supersymmetry is not obvious in the N=1 formalism, so we give it explicitly in components and in terms of a different set of N=1 chiral superfields. We also discuss the appearance of a second supersymmetry in D-term models, and the relation to N=2 F-term models. The analysis sheds light on an apparent parad…
We study supersymmetry breaking due to the presence of branes on anti-de Sitter space and obtain conditions for brane orientations not to break too many supersymmetries. Using the conditions, we construct a brane configuration corresponding to a baryon in large N gauge theory, and it is shown that the baryon is a marginal bound state of quarks as is expected from supersymmetry.
The 12d supersymmetry algebra is considered, and classification of BPS states for some canonical form of second-rank central charge is given. It is shown, that possible fractions of survived supersymmetry can be 1/16, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16 and 1/2, the values 3/8, 7/16 cannot be achieved in this way. The consideration of a special case of non-zero sixth-rank tensor charge also is included.
We consider the supergravity back-reaction of M2 branes wrapping around the space-time cycles in 1/8-BPS microstate geometries. We show that such brane wrappings will generically break all the supersymmetries. In particular, all the supersymmetries will be broken if there are such wrapped branes but the net charge of the wrapped branes is zero. We show that if M2 branes wrap a single cycle, or if they wrap a several of co-linear cycles with the same orientation, then the solution will be 1/16-BPS, having two supersymmetries. We comment on how these results relate to using W-branes to understan…
This review considers the properties of classical solutions to supergravity theories with partially unbroken supersymmetry. These solutions saturate Bogomol'ny-Prasad-Sommerfield bounds on their energy densities and are the carriers of the $p$-form charges that appear in the supersymmetry algebra. The simplest such solutions have the character of $(p+1)$-dimensional Poincaré-invariant hyperplanes in spacetime, i.e. $p$-branes. Topics covered include the relations between mass densities, charge densities and the preservation of unbroken supersymmetry; interpolating-soliton structure; diagonal a…
An exact solution of non-BPS multi-walls is found in supersymmetric massive T^\star(\mathbb{CP}^1) model in five dimensions. The non-BPS multi-wall solution is found to have no tachyon. Although it is only metastable under large fluctuations, we can give topological stability by considering a model with a double covering of the T^\star(\mathbb{CP}^1) target manifold. The {\cal N}=1 supersymmetry preserved on the four-dimensional world volume of one wall is broken by the coexistence of the other wall. The supersymmetry breaking is exponentially suppressed as the distance between the walls incre…
We study the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen string in N=2 supersymmetric QED with N=2-preserving superpotential, in which case the Abrikosov string is found to be 1/2-BPS saturated. Adding a quadratic small perturbation in the superpotential breaks N=2 supersymmetry to N=1 supersymmetry. Then the Abrikosov string is no longer BPS saturated. The difference between the string tensions for the non-BPS and BPS saturated situation is found to be negative to the first order of the perturbation parameter.
Extremal charged black holes are BPS solutions. It is commonly thought that their nonextremal counterparts are not. Further, experience with BPS solutions in flat spacetime suggests that all BPS solutions are supersymmetric; i.e. that they are invariant under some supersymmetry charges of either the original field theory or an appropriately extended version thereof. Using nonextremal Reissner-Nordström black holes as counterexamples, we show that neither of these expectations is universally valid. These black holes correspond to a one-parameter family of BPS solutions. By showing that, subject…
Theories with axionic scalars admit three different Euclidean formulations, obtained by Wick rotation, Wick rotation combined with analytic continuation of the axionic scalars, and Wick rotation combined with Hodge dualization. We investigate the relation between these formulations for a class of theories which contains the sigma models of N=2 vector multiplets as a special case. It is shown that semi-classical amplitudes can be expressed equivalently using the two types of axionic actions, while the Hodge dualized version gives a different value for the instanton action unless the integration…
We study the one-loop corrections to the effective on-shell action of N=2 supergravity in the background of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. In the extreme case the contributions from graviton, gravitino and photon to the one-loop corrections to the entropy are shown to cancel. This gives the first explicit example of the supersymmetric non-renormalization theorem for the on-shell action (entropy) for BPS configurations which admit Killing spinors. We display the residual supersymmetry of the perturbations of a general supersymmetric theory in a bosonic BPS background.
We develop an effective superpotential formalism for the SU(2)$\times$U(1) invariant sector of $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauged supergravity in five dimensions with a U(1)$^3$ Fayet-Iliopoulos gauging, and determine the exact superpotential that describes all 1/4 BPS solutions in this sector. This includes the Gutowski-Reall black holes, but also a much broader class of solutions with a squashed $S^3$, magnetic flux and vector multiplet sources, as well as complex Euclidean BPS saddles. Some of these solutions are known only numerically, but the exact superpotential allows us to analytically evaluate th…
In this paper, the non-BPS amplitudes ($Z < 2m$) are considered. Utilizing on-shell methods, the three point amplitudes of two equal-mass particles and one massless particle were constructed, where the two massive particles are non-BPS states. We verify the result by matching the $Z = 0$ and BPS limit with $N = 2$ supersymmetry. As an application we derive the non-BPS coupling for $N = 4$ super-Maxwell and supergravity.
We investigate the asymptotic supersymmetry group of the near horizon region of the BMPV black holes, which are the rotating BPS black holes in five dimensions. When considering only bosonic fluctuations, we show that there exist consistent boundary conditions and the corresponding asymptotic symmetry group is generated by a chiral Virasoro algebra with the vanishing central charge. After turning on fermionic fluctuations with the boundary conditions, we also show that the asymptotic supersymmetry group is generated by a chiral super-Virasoro algebra with the vanishing central extension. The s…
