We associate to any holomorphic vertex algebra a collection of Teichmüller modular forms, one in each genus. In genus one we obtain the character of the vertex algebra, and we thus reprove Zhu's modularity result. In higher genus, we prove that these forms have an expansion in terms of the correlation functions of the vertex algebra. We propose applications to the Schottky problem, to the study of the slope of the effective cone of the moduli space of curves, and to the classification of holomorphic vertex algebras. In particular, we prove a uniqueness result for high genera partition functions of the moonshine vertex algebra.
Grothendieck's Esquisse d'un programme is often referred to for the ideas it contains on dessins d'enfants, the Teichm{ü}ller tower, and the actions of the absolute Galois group on these objects or their etale fundamental groups. But this program contains several other important ideas. In particular, motivated by surface topology and moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, Grothendieck calls there for a recasting of topology, in order to make it fit to the objects of semialgebraic and semianalytic geometry, and in particular to the study of the Mumford-Deligne compactifications of moduli spaces. This paper proves the Beilinson-Soul{é} vanishing conjecture for motives attached to the moduli spaces of curves of genus 0 with n marked points. As part of the proof, it is also proved that these motives are mixed Tate. As a consequence of Levine's work, one obtains then well defined categories of mixed Tate motives over the moduli spaces of curves . It is shown that morphisms between moduli spaces forgetting marked points and embedding as boundary components induce functors between those categories and how tangential bases points fit in these functorialities. Tannakian formalism attaches gro…
Fuchsian groups with a modular embedding have the richest arithmetic properties among non-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. But they are very rare, all known examples being related either to triangle groups or to Teichmueller curves. In Part I of this paper we study the arithmetic properties of the modular embedding and develop from scratch a theory of twisted modular forms for Fuchsian groups with a modular embedding, proving dimension formulas, coefficient growth estimates and differential equations. In Part II we provide a modular proof for an Apery-like integrality statement for solutions of Pic…
We show how one can use the representation theory of ternary quartics to construct all vector-valued Siegel modular forms and Teichmüller modular forms of degree 3. The relation between the order of vanishing of a concomitant on the locus of double conics and the order of vanishing of the corresponding modular form on the hyperelliptic locus plays an important role. We also determine the connection between Teichmüller cusp forms on \overline{M}_g and the middle cohomology of symplectic local systems on M_g. In genus 3, we make this explicit in a large number of cases.
We compute the Euler characteristics of the recently discovered series of Gothic Teichmüller curves. The main tool is the construction of 'Gothic' Hilbert modular forms vanishing at the images of these Teichmüller curves. Contrary to all previously known examples, the Euler characteristic is not proportional to the Euler characteristic of the ambient Hilbert modular surfaces. This results in interesting 'varying' phenomena for Lyapunov exponents.
We compute the class of arithmetic genus two Teichmueller curves in the Picard group of pseudo-Hilbert modular surfaces, distinguished according to their torsion order and spin invariant. As an application, we compute the number of genus two square-tiled surfaces with these invariants. The main technical tool is the computation of divisor classes of Hilbert Jacobi forms on the universal abelian surface over the pseudo-Hilbert modular surface.
A Teichmüller curve is an algebraic and isometric immersion of an algebraic curve into the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We give the first explicit algebraic models of Teichmüller curves of positive genus. Our methods are based on the study of certain Hilbert modular forms and the use of Ahlfors's variational formula to identify eigenforms for real multiplication on genus two Jacobians. We also present evidence that Teichmüller curves admit a rich arithmetic geometry by exhibiting examples with small primes of bad reduction and notable divisors supported at their cusps.
We consider a rather special class of translation surfaces (called M-Origamis in this work) that are obtained from dessins by a construction introduced by Martin Möller. We give a new proof with a more combinatorial flavour of Möller's theorem that $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ acts faithfully on the Teichmüller curves of M-Origamis and extend his result by investigating the Galois action in greater detail. We determine the Strebel directions and corresponding cylinder decompositions of an M-Origami, as well as its Veech group, which contains the modular group $Γ(2)$ and is …
In this article combining survey and certain research results, we introduce a categorical framework for description of symmetries of genus zero modular operad. This description merges the techniques of recent "persistence homology" studies and the classical formalism of groupoids. We show that the contravariant "poset in groupoids" embodying these symmetries, provides a new avatar of profinite Grothendieck-Teichmüller group acting upon this operad but seemingly not related with representations of the Galois group of all algebraic numbers.
In this paper, we classify three-dimensional complex Abelian varieties isogenous to a product $A_1 \times A_2$, where one of the factors admits real multiplication by a real quadratic order $\mathcal{O}_D$ of discriminant $D$. We show that the moduli space $X_D^{(3)}$ of these varieties essentially is the disjoint union of certain Hilbert modular varieties $X_{\mathfrak{a}}$, each component depending on the choice of an ideal $\mathfrak{a}$ of $\mathcal{O}_D$. We give an explicit construction of these varieties. We show that the boundary of the eigenform locus for pseudo-real multiplication by…
Let ${\cal M}_{g,n}$ and ${\cal H}_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be, respectively, the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$ smooth curves and its closed substack consisting of hyperelliptic curves. Their topological fundamental groups can be identified, respectively, with $Γ_{g,n}$ and $H_{g,n}$, the so called Teichm{ü}ller modular group and hyperelliptic modular group. A choice of base point on ${\cal H}_{g,n}$ defines a monomorphism $H_{g,n}\hookrightarrowΓ_{g,n}$. Let $S_{g,n}$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ points removed. The Teichmüller group $Γ_{g,n}$ is the group of iso…
