A novel method aimed at a kinetic moments closure for a magnetized plasma with arbitrary collisionality is proposed. The intended first application is to a tokamak edge and scrape-off-layer plasma. The velocity distribution function for each species is expanded in 8 Gaussian Radial Basis Functions (GRBFs) which are essentially shifted Maxwellians at eight representative 3D-velocity points of drift. The vector of 8 fluid moments (for particle density, 3 particle fluxes, total energy density, and 3 energy fluxes) has an 8x8 analytic linear matrix relation to the vector of 8 GRBF density weights in 3D real space. The 8 fluid moments with sources for each species are advanced in time while the 8 GRBF weighs are determined from the 8x8 inverse matrix. The two closure moments (for the stress tensor and the energy weighted stress tensor) are linearly determined from the GRBF weights. Most importantly the velocity moments of the nonlinear Coulomb Fokker-Planck collision operator [Rosenbluth et al, Phys. Rev 107, 1957] are evaluated from the GRBF weights. Generalization from 8 to 12, 16, 20 .., in an energy weighted moment hierarchy is straightforward. The electric field follows from a generalized vorticity (quasi-neutral current continuity) equation. A strong drift ordering approximation can be applied to eliminate any spuriously unstable high frequency cyclotron motions. A novel weak drift ordering two-time step scheme avoids the vorticity equation by following ion cyclotron motion in time to get the electric field with ion gyroaveraging. Inclusion of low-beta magnetic perturbations is straightforward.
We consider a plasma described by means of a two-dimensional fluid model across a constant but non-uniform magnetic field $\mathbf{B} = B(x,y) \mathbf{\hat{z}}$. The dynamical evolution of the density and the vorticity takes into account the interchange instability and magnetic field inhomogeneities. First, in order to described the Finite Larmor Radius effects we apply the gyromap to build a Hamiltonian model with ion temperature from a cold-ion model. Second, we show that the gyromap is justified using Braginskii's closure for the stress tensor as well as an apt ordering on the fluctuating q…
A fluid description for collisionless magnetized plasmas that takes into account the effect of cyclotron resonance has been developed. Following the same approach as the Landau fluid closure, the heat flux components associated with transverse electromagnetic fluctuations are approximated by a linear combination of lower-order moments in wavenumber space. The closure successfully reproduces the linear cyclotron resonance for electromagnetic waves propagating parallel to the ambient magnetic field. In the presence of finite temperature anisotropy, the model gives approximately correct predictio…
Kinetic numerical simulations of the evolution of the Weibel instability during the full nonlinear regime are presented. The formation of strong distortions in the electron distribution function resulting in formation of strong peaks in it and their influence on the resulting electrostatic waves are shown.
The low-frequency limit of Maxwell equations is considered in the Maxwell-Vlasov system. This limit produces a neutral Vlasov system that captures essential features of plasma dynamics, while neglecting radiation effects. Euler-Poincaré reduction theory is used to show that the neutral Vlasov kinetic theory possesses a variational formulation in both Lagrangian and Eulerian coordinates. By construction, the model recovers all collisionless neutral models employed in plasma simulations. Then, comparisons between the neutral Vlasov system and hybrid kinetic-fluid models are presented in the line…
We investigate the formation of collisionless magnetized shocks triggered by the interaction between magnetized plasma flows and miniature-sized (order of plasma kinetic-scales) magnetic obstacles resorting to massively parallel, full particle-in-cell simulations, including the electron kinetics. The critical obstacle size to generate a compressed plasma region ahead of these objects is determined by independently varying the magnitude of the dipolar magnetic moment and the plasma magnetization. We find that the effective size of the obstacle depends on the relative orientation between the dip…
We have considered linear kinetic theory including the electron spin properties in a magnetized plasma. The starting point is a mean field Vlasov-like equation, derived from a fully quantum mechanical treatment, where effects from the electron spin precession and the magnetic dipole force is taken into account. The general conductivity tensor is derived, including both the free current contribution, as well as the magnetization current associated with the spin contribution. We conclude the paper with an extensive discussion of the quantum-mechanical boundary where we list parameter conditions …
The dielectric permeability tensor for spin polarized plasmas is derived in terms of the spin-1/2 quantum kinetic model in six-dimensional phase space. Expressions for the distribution function and spin distribution function are derived in linear approximations on the path of dielectric permeability tensor derivation. The dielectric permeability tensor is derived the spin-polarized degenerate electron gas. It is also discussed at the finite temperature regime, where the equilibrium distribution function is presented by the spin-polarized Fermi-Dirac distribution. Consideration of the spin-pola…
The kinetic damping mechanism of low frequency transverse perturbations propagating parallel to the magnetic field in a magnetized warm electron plasma is simulated by means of electromagnetic (EM) Vlasov simulations. The short-time-scale damping of the electron magnetohydrodynamic whistler perturbations and underlying physics of finite electron temperature effect on its real frequency are recovered rather deterministically, and analyzed. The damping arises from an interplay between a global (prevailing over entire phase-space) and the more familiar resonant-electron-specific kinetic damping m…
The dispersion relation of kinetic Alfvén wave in inertial regime is studied in a three component non-degenerate streaming plasma. A lin- ear dispersion relation using fluid- Vlasov equation for quantum plasma is also derived. The quantum correction CQ raised due to the insertion of Bohm potential in Vlasov model causes the suppression in the Alfven wave frequency and the growth rates of instability. A number of analytical expressions are derived for various modes of propagation. It is also found that many system parameters, i.e, streaming velocity, dust charge, num- ber density and quantum co…
Coulomb collisions in plasmas are typically modeled using the Boltzmann collision operator, or its variants, which apply to weakly magnetized plasmas in which the typical gyroradius of particles significantly exceeds the Debye length. Conversely, O'Neil has developed a kinetic theory to treat plasmas that are so strongly magnetized that the typical gyroradius of particles is much smaller than the distance of closest approach in a binary collision. Here, we develop a generalized collision operator that applies across the full range of magnetization strength. To demonstrate novel physics associa…
We respond to the recent comment [arXiv:1105.1593] on our Letter [G. G. Plunk and T. Tatsuno, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 165003 (2011)]. The comment claims that our argument for spectral transfer direction is incomplete. The comment gives an incomplete account of our argument. We explain how the argument of our Letter, in full, is self-contained consistent and well-supported by numerical evidence. Other technical statements made in the comment are explained to be incorrect. We direct interested readers to our forthcoming article, which should clarify any remaining technical ambiguities and also ill…
Collisionless shocks are common features in space and astrophysical systems where supersonic plasma flows interact, such as in the solar wind, the heliopause, and supernova remnants. Recent experimental capabilities and diagnostics allow detailed laboratory investigations of high-Mach-number shocks, which therefore can become a valuable way to understand shock dynamics in various astrophysical environments. Using 2D particle-in-cell simulations with a Coulomb binary collision operator, we demonstrate the mechanism for generation of energetic electrons and experimental requirements for detectin…
We propose a solution to the long-standing short wavelength polarization closure shortfall of full-F gyro-fluid models. This is achieved by first finding an appropriate quadratic form of the gyro-fluid moment over the polarization part of the gyro-center Hamiltonian. Secondly, we deduce Padé-based approximations to the latter expression that produce a polarization charge density with the desired order of accuracy and retain linear polarization effects for arbitrary wavelengths. The proposed closures feature proper energy conservation and the anticipated Oberbeck-Boussinesq and long wavelength …
Efficiency of collective beam-plasma interaction strongly depends on the growth rates of dominant instabilities excited in the system. Nevertheless, exact calculations of the full unstable spectrum in the framework of relativistic kinetic theory for arbitrary magnetic fields and particle distributions were unknown until now. In this paper we give an example of such a calculation answering the question whether the finite thermal spreads of plasma electrons are able to suppress the fastest growing modes in the beam-plasma system. It is shown that nonrelativistic temperatures of Maxwellian plasma…
Plasmas that are strongly magnetized in the sense that the gyrofrequency exceeds the plasma frequency exhibit novel transport properties that are not well understood. As a representative example, we compute the friction force acting on a massive test charge moving through a strongly coupled and strongly magnetized one-component plasma using a generalized Boltzmann kinetic theory. Recent works studying the weakly coupled regime have shown that strong magnetization leads to a transverse component of the friction force that is perpendicular to both the Lorentz force and velocity of the test charg…
The closure problem in fluid modeling is a well-known challenge to modelers aiming to accurately describe their system of interest. Over many years, analytic formulations in a wide range of regimes have been presented but a practical, generalized fluid closure for magnetized plasmas remains an elusive goal. In this study, as a first step towards constructing a novel data based approach to this problem, we apply ever-maturing machine learning methods to assess the capability of neural network architectures to reproduce crucial physics inherent in popular magnetized plasma closures. We find enco…
The Dupree-Weinstock renormalization is used to prove that a reactive closure exists for drift wave turbulence in magnetized plasmas. The result is used to explain recent results in gyrokinetic simulations and is also related to the Mattor-Parker closure. The level of closure is found in terms of applied external sources.
A conservative scheme has been formulated and verified for gyrokinetic particle simulations of electromagnetic waves and instabilities in magnetized plasmas. An electron continuity equation derived from drift kinetic equation is used to time advance electron density perturbation by using the perturbed mechanical flow calculated from the parallel vector potential, and the parallel vector potential is solved by using the perturbed canonical flow from the perturbed distribution function. In gyrokinetic particle simulations using this new scheme, shear Alfvén wave dispersion relation in shearless …
In this work we introduce, for the first time, as far as we know, a complete self-consist kinetic model for collisional transport in the nonextensive statistics, i.e., the generalization of the ordinary Maxwell-Boltmzann statistics according to the Tsallis entropy. Starting only from the definition of this entropy, we derive the kinetic model, find its solutions for the electrons in a strongly magnetized plasmas, and calculate the respective transport coefficients in order to set the closed fluid equations. The results are further applied to model heat transport in space plasmas and the cold p…
Understanding magnetized laser-plasma interactions is important for controlling magneto-inertial fusion experiments and developing magnetically assisted radiation and particle sources. In the long-pulse regime, interactions are dominated by coherent three-wave interactions, whose nonlinear coupling coefficients become known only recently when waves propagate at oblique angles with the magnetic field. In this paper, backscattering coupling coefficients predicted by warm-fluid theory is benchmarked using particle-in-cell simulations in one spatial dimension, and excellent agreements are found fo…
Context. Magnetized plasmas characterized by shearing flows are present in many natural contexts, such as the Earth's magnetopause and the solar wind. The collisionless nature of involved plasmas requires a kinetic description. When the width of the shear layer is of the order of ion scales, the Hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell approach can be adopted. Aims. The aim of the paper is to derive explicit forms for stationary configurations of magnetized plasmas with planar shearing flows, within the Hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell description. Two configurations are considered: the first with a uniform magnetic field o…
In Part 2 of our guide to collisionless fluid models, we concentrate on Landau fluid closures. These closures were pioneered by Hammett and Perkins and allow for the rigorous incorporation of collisionless Landau damping into a fluid framework. It is Landau damping that sharply separates traditional fluid models and collisionless kinetic theory, and is the main reason why the usual fluid models do not converge to the kinetic description, even in the long-wavelength low-frequency limit. We start with a brief introduction to kinetic theory, where we discuss in detail the plasma dispersion functi…
We present a new method for formulating closures that learn from kinetic simulation data. We apply this method to phase mixing in a simple gyrokinetic turbulent system - temperature gradient driven turbulence in an unsheared slab. The closure, called the learned multi-mode (LMM) closure, is constructed by, first, extracting an optimal basis from a nonlinear kinetic simulation using singular value decomposition (SVD). Subsequent nonlinear fluid simulations are projected onto this basis and the results are used to formulate the closure. We compare the closure with other closures schemes over a b…

We employ magnetized plasma turbulence, described by a gyrokinetic formalism in an interval ranging from the end of the fluid scales to the electron gyroradius, to introduce the first study of kinetic intermittency, in which nonlinear structures formed directly in the distribution functions are analyzed by accounting for velocity space correlations generated by linear (Landau resonance) and nonlinear phase mixing. Electron structures are found to be strongly intermittent and dominated by linear phase mixing, while nonlinear phase mixing dominates the weakly intermittent ions. This is the first…
Recent efforts to include kinetic effects in fluid simulations of plasmas have been very promising. Concerning collisionless magnetic reconnection, it has been found before that damping of the pressure tensor to isotropy leads to good agreement with kinetic runs in certain scenarios. An accurate representation of kinetic effects in reconnection was achieved in a study by Wang et al. (Phys. Plasmas, volume 22, 2015, 012108) with a closure derived from earlier work by Hammett and Perkins (PRL, volume 64, 1990, 3019). Here, their approach is analyzed on the basis of heat flux data from a Vlasov s…
Incorporation of kinetic effects such as Landau damping into a fluid framework was pioneered by Hammett and Perkins PRL 1990, by obtaining closures of the fluid hierarchy, where the gyrotropic heat flux fluctuations or the deviation of the 4th-order gyrotropic fluid moment, are expressed through lower-order fluid moments. To obtain a closure of a fluid model expanded around a bi-Maxwellian distribution function, the usual plasma dispersion function $Z(ζ)$ that appears in kinetic theory or the associated plasma response function $R(ζ)=1 + ζZ(ζ)$, have to be approximated with a suitable Padé app…
We present a new model for simulating the electromagnetic fluctuations with frequencies much lower than the ion cyclotron frequency in plasmas confined in general magnetic configurations. This novel model (termed as GK-E&B) employs nonlinear gyrokinetic equations formulated in terms of electromagnetic fields along with momentum balance equations for solving fields. It, thus, not only includes kinetic effects, such as wave-particle interaction and microscopic (ion Larmor radius scale) physics; but also is computationally more efficient than the conventional formulation described in terms of pot…
The question of how nonlinear interactions redistribute the energy of fluctuations across available degrees of freedom is of fundamental importance in the study of turbulence and transport in magnetized weakly collisional plasmas, ranging from space settings to fusion devices. In this letter, we present a theory for the dual cascade found in such plasmas, which predicts a range of new behavior that distinguishes this cascade from that of neutral fluid turbulence. These phenomena are explained in terms of the constrained nature of spectral transfer in nonlinear gyrokinetics. Accompanying this t…
We argue that the constraints on transfers, given in the Letter [G. Plunk and T. Tatsuno, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 165003 (2011)], but not correctly, do not give the transfer and/or cascade directions which however can be assisted by the absolute equilibria calculated in this Comment, following Kraichnan [R. H. Kraichnan, Phys. Fluids {\bf 102}, 1417 (1967)]. One of the important statements about the transfers with only one or no diagonal component can be shown to be inappropriate according to the fundamental dynamics. Some mathematical mistakes are pointed out.
We present nanosecond timescale Vlasov-Fokker-Planck-Maxwell modeling of magnetized plasma transport and dynamics in a hohlraum with an applied external magnetic field, under conditions similar to recent experiments. Self-consistent modeling of the kinetic electron momentum equation allows for a complete treatment of the heat flow equation and Ohm's Law, including Nernst advection of magnetic fields. In addition to showing the prevalence of non-local behavior, we demonstrate that effects such as anomalous heat flow are induced by inverse bremsstrahlung heating. We show magnetic field amplifica…
A fluid theory has been developed by taking account of gyro-viscosity to study wave propagation characteristics in a homogeneous pair-ion magnetized plasma with a cylindrical symmetry. The exact dispersion relations derived by the Hankel-Fourier transformation are shown comparable with those observed in the experiment by Oohara and co-workers. The gyro-viscosity is responsible for the change in propagation characteristics of the ion cyclotron wave from forward to backward by suppressing the effect of the thermal pressure which normally causes the forward nature of dispersion. Although the expe…
An expression for the internal energy of a fluid element in a weakly coupled, magnetized, anisotropic plasma is derived from first principles. The result is a function of entropy, particle density and magnetic field, and as such plays the role of a thermodynamic potential: it determines in principle all thermodynamic properties of the fluid element. In particular it provides equations of state for the magnetized plasma. The derivation uses familiar fluid equations, a few elements of kinetic theory, the MHD version of Faraday's law, and certain familiar stability and regularity conditions.
The nonlinear evolution of collisionless plasmas is typically a multi-scale process where the energy is injected at large, fluid scales and dissipated at small, kinetic scales. Accurately modelling the global evolution requires to take into account the main micro-scale physical processes of interest. This is why comparison of different plasma models is today an imperative task aiming at understanding cross-scale processes in plasmas. We report here the first comparative study of the evolution of a magnetized shear flow, through a variety of different plasma models by using magnetohydrodynamic,…
A general, fast, and effective approach is developed for numerical calculation of kinetic plasma dispersion relations. The plasma dispersion function is approximated by $J$-pole expansion. Subsequently, the dispersion relation is transformed to a standard matrix eigenvalue problem of an equivalent linear system. The result is accurate for $J=8$ except the solutions that are the little interesting heavily damped modes. In contrast to conventional approaches, such as Newton's iterative method, this approach can give either all the solutions in the system or a few solutions around the initial gue…
Collisionless plasmas, such as those encountered in tokamaks, exhibit a rich variety of instabilities. The physical origin, triggering mechanisms and fundamental understanding of many plasma instabilities, however, are still open problems. We investigate the stability properties of a collisionless Vlasov plasma in a stationary homogeneous magnetic field. We narrow the scope of our investigation to the case of Maxwellian plasma. For the first time using a fully kinetic approach we show the emergence of the local instability, a transient growth, followed by classical Landau damping in a stable m…
Recent laboratory experiments with laser-produced plasmas have observed and studied a number of fundamental physical processes relevant to magnetized astrophysical plasmas, including magnetic reconnection, collisionless shocks, and magnetic field generation by Weibel instability, opening up new experimental platforms for laboratory astrophysics. We develop a fully kinetic simulation model for first-principles simulation of these systems including the dynamics of magnetic fields---magnetic field generation by the Biermann battery effect or Weibel instability; advection by the ion flow, Hall eff…
Non-local closures allow kinetic effects on parallel transport to be included in fluid simulations. This is especially important in the scrape-off layer, but to be useful there the non-local model requires consistent kinetic boundary conditions at the sheath. A non-local closure scheme based on solution of a kinetic equation using a diagonalized moment expansion has been previously reported. We derive a method for imposing kinetic boundary conditions in this scheme and discuss their implementation in BOUT++. To make it feasible to implement the boundary conditions in the code, we are lead to t…
Magnetic reconnection in strongly magnetized (low-beta), weakly collisional plasmas is investigated using a novel fluid-kinetic model [Zocco & Schekochihin, Phys. Plasmas 18, 102309 (2011)] which retains non-isothermal electron kinetics. It is shown that electron heating via Landau damping (linear phase mixing) is the dominant dissipation mechanism. In time, electron heating occurs after the peak of the reconnection rate; in space, it is concentrated along the separatrices of the magnetic island. For sufficiently large systems, the peak reconnection rate is $cE_{max}\approx 0.2v_AB_{y,0}$, whe…
The complete short mean free path description of magnetized plasma in the drift ordering has recently been derived. The results correct the previous expressions for the ion pressure anisotropy (or parallel ion viscosity) and the perpendicular ion viscosity - the ion gyro-viscosity is unchanged. In addition, the electron problem is solved for the first time to obtain the electron pressure anisotropy (parallel electron viscosity) and the electron gyro-viscosity - the perpendicular electron viscosity is negligible. The results have been used to obtain a reduced fluid description appropriate to th…
Shocks waves are a ubiquitous feature of many astrophysical plasma systems, and an important process for energy dissipation and transfer. The physics of these shock waves are frequently treated/modeled as a collisional, fluid MHD discontinuity, despite the fact that many shocks occur in the collisionless regime. In light of this, using fully kinetic, 3D simulations of non-relativistic, parallel propagating collisionless shocks comprised of electron-positron plasma, we detail the deviation of collisionless shocks form MHD predictions for varying magnetization/Alfvénic Mach numbers, with particu…
Simulations of large-scale plasma systems are typically based on a fluid approximation approach. These models construct a moment-based system of equations that approximate the particle-based physics as a fluid, but as a result lack the small-scale physical processes available to fully kinetic models. Traditionally, empirical closure relations are used to close the moment-based system of equations, which typically approximate the pressure tensor or heat flux. The more accurate the closure relation, the stronger the simulation approaches kinetic-based results. In this paper, new closure terms ar…
We consider backscattering of laser pulses in strongly-magnetized plasma mediated by kinetic magnetohydrodynamic waves. Magnetized low-frequency scattering, which can occur when the external magnetic field is neither perpendicular nor parallel to the laser propagation direction, provides an instability growth rate higher than Raman scattering and a frequency downshift comparable to Brillouin scattering. In addition to the high growth rate, which allows smaller plasmas, and the 0.1-2\% frequency downshift, which permits a wide range of pump sources, MLF scattering is an ideal candidate for ampl…
We derive the conditions under which the fluid models obtained from the first two moments of Hamiltonian drift-kinetic systems of interest to plasma physics, preserve a Hamiltonian structure. The adopted procedure consists of determining closure relations that allow to truncate the Poisson bracket of the drift-kinetic system, expressed in terms of the moments, in such a way that the resulting operation is a Poisson bracket for functionals of the first two fluid moments. The analysis is carried out for a class of full drift-kinetic equations and also for drift-kinetic systems in which a splitti…
The purpose of this paper is to develop a simplified model as the modeling of the magnetized plasmas. The starting point is an assumption that the distribution of the ensemble of charged particles in the same species is homogeneous over gyrophase. The particles in this ensemble are located at the same guiding-cneter position $(\mathbf{X},μ,U)$. Then, a fundamental Lagrangian differential 1-form is developed. It contains all particles in the magnetized plasma system as well as the Coulomb pair force between particles instead of field-particle interaction used in conventional gyrokinetic models.…
Electrostatic gyrokinetic absolute equilibria with continuum velocity field are obtained through the partition function and through the Green function of the functional integral. The new results justify and explain the prescription for quantization/discretization or taking the continuum limit of velocity. The mistakes in the Appendix D of our earlier work [J.-Z. Zhu and G. W. Hammett, Phys. Plasmas {\bf 17}, 122307 (2010)] are explained and corrected. If the lattice spacing for discretizing velocity is big enough, all the invariants could concentrate at the lowest Fourier modes in a negative-t…
The ordinary-extraordinary-Bernstein (O-X-B) double conversion is considered and simulated with a kinetic particle model vs full wave model for parameters of the TJ-II stellarator. This simulation has been done with the particle-in-cell code, XOOPIC (X11-based object-oriented particle-incell). XOOPIC is able to model the non-monotonic density and magnetic profile of TJ-II. The first step of conversion, O-X conversion, is observed clearly. By applying some optimizations such as increasing the number of computational particles in the region of the X-B conversion, the simulation of the second ste…
Charged particles gyrate around magnetic field lines, a property that is exploited to confine plasma in magnetic confinement fusion devices. Typically, the gyroradius is small compared to the system size and thus the gyromotion can be averaged out. The resulting charged particle motion closely follows a magnetic field line. At the edge of fusion devices, the magnetic field usually impinges on a wall at a shallow angle. A boundary layer forms in which the plasma density changes over a characteristic distance from the wall of the order of the ion gyroradius, as ions are absorbed during their gyr…
