We consider the class of smooth convex functions defined over an open convex set. We show that this class is essentially different than the class of smooth convex functions defined over the entire linear space by exhibiting a function that belongs to the former class but cannot be extended to the entire linear space while keeping its properties. We proceed by deriving new properties of the class under consideration, including an inequality that is strictly stronger than the classical Descent Lemma.
Strongly convex sets in Hilbert spaces are characterized by local properties. One quantity which is used for this purpose is a generalization of the modulus of convexity δ_Ωof a set Ω. We also show that \lim_{ε\to 0} δ_Ω(ε)/ε^2 exists whenever Ωis closed and convex.
In this paper, we study the rate of convergence of the cyclic projection algorithm applied to finitely many basic semi-algebraic convex sets. We establish an explicit convergence rate estimate which relies on the maximum degree of the polynomials that generate the basic semi-algebraic convex sets and the dimension of the underlying space. We achieve our results by exploiting the algebraic structure of the basic semi-algebraic convex sets.
In this paper, we study different kinds of normal properties for infinite system of arbitrarily many convex sets in a Banach space and provide the dual characterization for the normal property in terms of the extended Jamenson property for arbitrarily many weak*-closed convex cones in the dual space. Then, we use the normal property and the extended Jamenson property to study CHIP, strong CHIP and linear regularity for the infinite case of arbitrarily many convex sets and establish equivalent relationship among these properties. In particular, we extend main results in [3] on normal property, …
The projector onto the Minkowski sum of closed convex sets is generally not equal to the sum of individual projectors. In this work, we provide a complete answer to the question of characterizing the instances where such an equality holds. Our results unify and extend the case of linear subspaces and Zarantonello's results for projectors onto cones. A detailed analysis in the case of convex combinations is also carried out. We establish the partial sum property for projectors onto convex cones, and we also present various examples as well as a detailed analysis in the univariate case.
While faces of a polytope form a well structured lattice, in which faces of each possible dimension are present, this is not true for general compact convex sets. We address the question of what dimensional patterns are possible for the faces of general closed convex sets. We show that for any finite sequence of positive integers there exist compact convex sets which only have extreme points and faces with dimensions from this prescribed sequence. We also discuss another approach to dimensionality, considering the dimension of the union of all faces of the same dimension. We show that the ques…
In this paper, the spherical quasi-convexity of quadratic functions on spherically subdual convex sets is studied. Sufficient conditions for spherical quasi-convexity on spherically subdual convex sets are presented. A partial characterization of spherical quasi-convexity on spherical Lorentz sets is given and some examples are provided.
We establish the following max-plus analogue of Minkowski's theorem. Any point of a compact max-plus convex subset of $(R\cup\{-\infty\})^n$ can be written as the max-plus convex combination of at most $n+1$ of the extreme points of this subset. We establish related results for closed max-plus convex cones and closed unbounded max-plus convex sets. In particular, we show that a closed max-plus convex set can be decomposed as a max-plus sum of its recession cone and of the max-plus convex hull of its extreme points.
Nearly convex sets play important roles in convex analysis, optimization and theory of monotone operators. We give a systematic study of nearly convex sets, and construct examples of subdifferentials of lower semicontinuous convex functions whose domain or ranges are nonconvex.
The (delta-) normal cone to an arbitrary intersection of sublevel sets of proper, lower semicontinuous, and convex functions is characterized, using either epsilon-subdifferentials at the nominal point or exact subdifferentials at nearby points. Our tools include (epsilon-) calculus rules for sup/max functions. The framework of this work is that of a locally convex space, however, formulas using exact subdifferentials require some restriction either on the space (e.g. Banach), or on the function (e.g. epi-pointed).
Necessary and sufficient conditions for convexity and strong convexity, respectively, of sublevel sets that are defined by finitely many real-valued $C^{1,1}$-maps are presented. A novel characterization of strongly convex sets in terms of the so-called local quadratic support is proved. The results concerning strong convexity are used to derive sufficient conditions for attainable sets of continuous-time nonlinear systems to be strongly convex. An application of these conditions is a novel method to over-approximate attainable sets when strong convexity is present.
In this paper we study some relationships between polyhedral convex sets (PCS) and generalized polyhedral convex sets (GPCS). In particular, we clarify by a counterexample that the necessary and sufficient conditions for the separation of a convex set and a PCS obtained by Kung Fu Ng and Wen Song in [Fenchel duality in finite-dimensional setting and its applications, Nonlinear Anal. 55(2003), 845--858; Theorem~3.1] are no longer valid when considering GPCS instead of PCS. We also introduce and study the notions of generalized polyhedral set-valued mappings and optimal value functions generated…
We investigate the convergence rate of the distributed Dykstra's algorithm when some of the sets are defined as the level sets of convex functions. We carry out numerical experiments to compare with the theoretical results obtained.
In this paper we introduce an enhanced notion of extremal systems for sets in locally convex topological vector spaces and obtain efficient conditions for set extremality in the convex case. Then we apply this machinery to deriving new calculus results on intersection rules for normal cones to convex sets and on infimal convolutions of support functions.
We prove that every pointed closed convex set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is the intersection of all the rational closed halfspaces that contain it. This generalizes a previous result by the authors for compact convex sets.
The aim of this paper is twofold. On one hand the generalized Minkowski sets are defined and characterized. On the other hand, the Motzkin decomposable sets, along with their epigraphic versions are considered and characterized in new ways. Among them, the closed convex sets with one single minimal face, i.e. translated closed convex cones, along with their epigraphic counterparts are particularly studied.
We consider a model that arises in integer programming, and show that all irredundant inequalities are obtained from maximal lattice-free convex sets in an affine subspace. We also show that these sets are polyhedra. The latter result extends a theorem of Lovász characterizing maximal lattice-free convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$.
The Frank-Wolfe method solves smooth constrained convex optimization problems at a generic sublinear rate of $\mathcal{O}(1/T)$, and it (or its variants) enjoys accelerated convergence rates for two fundamental classes of constraints: polytopes and strongly-convex sets. Uniformly convex sets non-trivially subsume strongly convex sets and form a large variety of \textit{curved} convex sets commonly encountered in machine learning and signal processing. For instance, the $\ell_p$-balls are uniformly convex for all $p > 1$, but strongly convex for $p\in]1,2]$ only. We show that these sets systema…
This paper shows that---under suitable conditions on a cone $C$---any element in the convex hull of a decomposably $C$-antichain-convex set $Y$ is $C$-Pareto dominated by some element of $Y$. Building on this, the paper proves the disjointness of the convex hulls of two disjoint decomposably $C$-antichain-convex sets whenever one of latter is $C$-upward. These findings are used to obtain several consequences on the structure of the $C$-Pareto optima of decomposably $C$-antichain-convex sets, on the separation of decomposably $C$-antichain-convex sets and on the convexity of the set of maximals…
In this paper we introduce and study the concept of set extremality for systems of convex sets in vector spaces without topological structures. Characterizations of the extremal systems of sets are obtained in the form of the convex extremal principle, which is shown to be equivalent to convex separation under certain qualification conditions expressed via algebraic cores. The obtained results are applied via a variational geometric approach to deriving enhanced calculus rules for normals to convex sets, coderivatives of convex set-valued mappings, and subgradients of extended-real-valued conv…
This paper introduces a new subtraction operation for convex sets, which defines their difference as a collection of inclusion-minimal convex sets with appropriate definitions of linear operations on them. With these operations the set of collections becomes a linear vector space with common zero and possibility to invert Minkowski summation. As the demonstration of usability of this concept the Lipschitz continuity of \(ε\)-subdifferentials of convex analysis is proved in a novel way.
The Baillon-Haddad theorem establishes that the gradient of a convex and continuously differentiable function defined in a Hilbert space is $β$-Lipschitz if and only if it is $1/β$-cocoercive. In this paper, we extend this theorem to Gâteaux differentiable convex functions defined on an open convex set of a Hilbert space. Finally, we give a characterization of $C^{1,+}$ convex functions in terms of local cocoercitivity.
This paper discusses differential stability of convex programming problems in Hausdorff locally convex topological vector spaces. Among other things, we obtain formulas for computing or estimating the subdifferential and the singular subdifferential of the optimal value function via suitable multiplier sets.
In this paper some concepts of convex analysis on hyperbolic space are studied. We first study properties of the intrinsic distance, for instance, we present the spectral decomposition of its Hessian. Next, we study the concept of convex sets and the intrinsic projection onto these sets. We also study the concept of convex functions and present first and second order characterizations of these functions, as well as some optimization concepts related to them. An extensive study of the hyperbolically convex quadratic functions is also presented.

A closed convex subset of a normed linear space is said to have the strong separation property if it can be strongly separated from every other disjoint closed and convex set by a closed hyperplane. In this paper we give some results on the separation of convex sets with noticing the role of barrier cones, develop some characterizations of subsets having the strong separation property, and apply them to consider a class of convex optimization problems.
We study the generalization of split, k-branch split, and intersection cuts from Mixed Integer Linear Programming to the realm of Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming. Constructing such cuts requires calculating the convex hull of the difference between a convex set and an open set with a simple geometric structure. We introduce two techniques to give precise characterizations of such convex hulls and use them to construct split, k-branch split, and intersection cuts for several classes of non-polyhedral sets. In particular, we give simple formulas for split cuts for essentially all convex sets…
In the present paper, conditions under which the images of uniformly convex sets through $C^{1,1}$ regular mappings between Banach spaces remain convex are established. These conditions are expressed by a certain quantitative relation betweeen the modulus of convexity of a given set and the global regularity behaviour of the mapping on it. Such a result enables one to extend to a wide subclass of convex sets the Polyak's convexity principle, which was originally concerned with images of small balls around points of Hilbert spaces. In particular, the crucial phenomenon of the preservation of co…
In this paper we generalize the factorization theorem of Gouveia, Parrilo and Thomas to a broader class of convex sets. Given a general convex set, we define a slack operator associated to the set and its polar according to whether the convex set is full dimensional, whether it is a translated cone and whether it contains lines. We strengthen the condition of a cone lift by requiring not only the convex set is the image of an affine slice of a given closed convex cone, but also its recession cone is the image of the linear slice of the closed convex cone. We show that the generalized lift of a…
We study a location problem that involves a weighted sum of distances to closed convex sets. As several of the weights might be negative, traditional solution methods of convex optimization are not applicable. After obtaining some existence theorems, we introduce a simple, but effective, algorithm for solving the problem. Our method is based on the Pham Dinh - Le Thi algorithm for d.c. programming and a generalized version of the Weiszfeld algorithm, which works well for convex location problems.
We study the convex geometry of the forward reach sets for integrator dynamics in finite dimensions with bounded control. We derive closed-form expressions for the volume and the diameter (i.e., maximal width) of these sets in terms of the state space dimension, control bound, and time. These results are novel, and use convex analysis to give an analytical handle on the "size" of the integrator reach set. Several concrete examples are provided to illustrate our results. We envision that the ideas presented here will motivate further theoretical and algorithmic development in reach set computat…
In this paper we prove a sharp inequality of Szegő-Weinberger type for the first nontrivial eigenvalue of the $p-$Laplacian with Neumann boundary conditions. This applies to convex sets with given diameter. Some variants, extensions and limit cases are investigated as well.
In this paper we derive strong linear inequalities for sets of the form {(x, q) \in Rd \times R : q \geq Q(x), x \in Rd - int(P)}, where Q(x) : Rd \rightarrow R is a quadratic function, P \subset Rd and "int" denotes interior. Of particular but not exclusive interest is the case where P denotes a closed convex set. In this paper, we present several cases where it is possible to characterize the convex hull by efficiently separable linear inequalities.
Efficient representations of convex sets are of crucial importance for many algorithms that work with them. It is well-known that sometimes, a complicated convex set can be expressed as the projection of a much simpler set in higher dimensions called a lift of the original set. This is a brief survey of recent developments in the topic of lifts of convex sets. Our focus will be on lifts that arise from affine slices of real positive semidefinite cones known as psd or spectrahedral lifts. The main result is that projection representations of a convex set are controlled by factorizations, throug…
It is known that the curvature of the feasible set in convex optimization allows for algorithms with better convergence rates, and there has been renewed interest in this topic both for offline as well as online problems. In this paper, leveraging results on geometry and convex analysis, we further our understanding of the role of curvature in optimization: - We first show the equivalence of two notions of curvature, namely strong convexity and gauge bodies, proving a conjecture of Abernethy et al. As a consequence, this show that the Frank-Wolfe-type method of Wang and Abernethy has accelerat…
We propose algorithms and software for computing projections onto the intersection of multiple convex and non-convex constraint sets. The software package, called SetIntersectionProjection, is intended for the regularization of inverse problems in physical parameter estimation and image processing. The primary design criterion is working with multiple sets, which allows us to solve inverse problems with multiple pieces of prior knowledge. Our algorithms outperform the well known Dykstra's algorithm when individual sets are not easy to project onto because we exploit similarities between constr…
We prove that linearizing certain families of polynomial optimization problems leads to new functorial operations in real convex sets. We show that under some conditions these operations can be computed or approximated in ways amenable to efficient computation. These operations are convex analogues of Hom functors, tensor products, symmetric powers, exterior powers and general Schur functors on vector spaces and lead to novel constructions even for polyhedra.
We study the algebraic boundary of a convex semi-algebraic set via duality in convex and algebraic geometry. We generalize the correspondence of facets of a polytope to the vertices of the dual polytope to general semi-algebraic convex bodies. In the general setup, exceptional families of extreme points might exist and we characterize them semi-algebraically. We also give an algorithm to compute a complete list of exceptional families, given the algebraic boundary of the dual convex set.
We consider the problem of minimizing convex combinations of the first two eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-Laplacian among open sets of $R^N$ of fixed measure. We show that, by purely elementary arguments, based on the minimality condition, it is possible to obtain informations on the geometry of the minimizers of convex combinations: we study, in particular, when these minimizers are no longer convex, and the optimality of balls. As an application of our results we study the boundary of the attainable set for the Dirichlet spectrum. Our techniques involve symmetry results à la Serrin, explicit c…
