In this paper we introduce and study the concept of set extremality for systems of convex sets in vector spaces without topological structures. Characterizations of the extremal systems of sets are obtained in the form of the convex extremal principle, which is shown to be equivalent to convex separation under certain qualification conditions expressed via algebraic cores. The obtained results are applied via a variational geometric approach to deriving enhanced calculus rules for normals to convex sets, coderivatives of convex set-valued mappings, and subgradients of extended-real-valued convex functions including the optimal value ones. These rules of the equality type are established under refined qualification conditions in terms of algebraic cores in arbitrary vector spaces. Our new developments partially answer the question on how far we can go with set-valued and convex analysis without any topological structure on the underlying spaces.
In this paper we introduce an enhanced notion of extremal systems for sets in locally convex topological vector spaces and obtain efficient conditions for set extremality in the convex case. Then we apply this machinery to deriving new calculus results on intersection rules for normal cones to convex sets and on infimal convolutions of support functions.
For nonsmooth Euler-Lagrange extremals, Noether's conservation laws cease to be valid. We show that Emmy Noether's theorem of the calculus of variations is still valid in the wider class of Lipschitz functions, as long as one restrict the Euler-Lagrange extremals to those which satisfy the DuBois-Reymond necessary condition. In the smooth case all Euler-Lagrange extremals are DuBois-Reymond extremals, and the result gives a proper extension of the classical Noether's theorem. This is in contrast with the recent developments of Noether's symmetry theorems to the optimal control setting, which g…
The article deals with operations defined on convex polyhedra or polyhedral convex functions. Given two convex polyhedra, operations like Minkowski sum, intersection and closed convex hull of the union are considered. Basic operations for one convex polyhedron are, for example, the polar, the conical hull and the image under affine transformation. The concept of a P-representation of a convex polyhedron is introduced. It is shown that many polyhedral calculus operations can be expressed explicitly in terms of P-representations. We point out that all the relevant computational effort for polyhe…
In this paper we study the regularity of the local minima of integral functionals: in particular, not convexity (quasi-convexity, policonvexity or rank one convexity) hypothesis will be made on the density, neither structure hypothesis nor radial nor diagonal.
This paper contains selected applications of the new tangential extremal principles and related results developed in Part I to calculus rules for infinite intersections of sets and optimality conditions for problems of semi-infinite programming and multiobjective optimization with countable constraints
In this paper we develop a geometric approach to convex subdifferential calculus in finite dimensions with employing some ideas of modern variational analysis. This approach allows us to obtain natural and rather easy proofs of basic results of convex subdifferential calculus in full generality and also derive new results of convex analysis concerning marginal/value functions, normal of inverse images of sets under set-valued mappings, calculus rules for coderivatives of single-valued and set-valued mappings, and calculating coderivatives of solution maps to convex generalized equations.
In this paper we study the concept of algebraic core for convex sets in general vector spaces without any topological structure and then present its applications to problems of convex analysis and optimization. Deriving the equivalence between the Hahn-Banach theorem and and a simple version of the separation theorem of convex sets in vector spaces allows us to develop a geometric approach to generalized differential calculus for convex sets, set-valued mappings, and extended-real-valued functions with qualification conditions formulated in terms of algebraic cores for such objects. We also ob…
We present a new duality theory for non-convex variational problems, under possibly mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The dual problem reads nicely as a linear programming problem, and our main result states that there is no duality gap. Further, we provide necessary and sufficient optimality conditions, and we show that our duality principle can be reformulated as a min-max result which is quite useful for numerical implementations. As an example, we illustrate the application of our method to a celebrated free boundary problem. The results were announced in \cite{BoFr}.
This article develops dual variational formulations for a large class of models in variational optimization. The results are established through basic tools of functional analysis, convex analysis and duality theory. The main duality principle is developed as an application to a Ginzburg-Landau type system in superconductivity in the absence of a magnetic field. In the first part final sections, we develop new general dual convex variational formulations, more specifically, dual formulations with a large region of convexity around the critical points which are suitable for the non-convex optim…
In the paper, we offer a method for studying an extremal in the classical calculus of variation in the presence of various degenerations. This method is based on introduction of Weierstrass type variations characterized by a numerical parameter. To obtain more effective results, introduced variations are used in two forms: in the form of variations on the right with respect to the given point, and in the form of variations on the left with respect to the same point. The research is conducted under the assumption that along the considered extremal the Weierstrass condition and the Legendre cond…
We propose the use of algebras of generalized functions for the analysis of certain highly singular problems in the calculus of variations. After a general study of extremal problems on open subsets of Euclidean space in this setting we introduce the first and second variation of a variational problem. We then derive necessary (Euler-Lagrange equations) and sufficient conditions for extremals. The concept of association is used to obtain connections to a distributional description of singular variational problems. We study variational symmetries and derive an appropriate version of Nöther's th…
We study, in a unified way, the following questions related to the properties of Pontryagin extremals for optimal control problems with unrestricted controls: i) How the transformations, which define the equivalence of two problems, transform the extremals? ii) How to obtain quantities which are conserved along any extremal? iii) How to assure that the set of extremals include the minimizers predicted by the existence theory? These questions are connected to: i) the Caratheodory method which establishes a correspondence between the minimizing curves of equivalent problems; ii) the interplay be…
The main contribution of this paper is that every convex function with non-empty relative algebraic interior of its domain is Lipschitz and subdifferentiable in some algebraic sense without any additional topological constraints. The proposed approach uses slightly modified Clarke's subdifferential for functions defined on a convex symmetric set and Lipschitz with respect to a Minkowski functional. Following this, Clarke's subdifferential calculus is generalized to vector spaces and, where continuity properties are claimed, to topological vector spaces.
The fundamental problem of calculus of variations is considered when solutions are differentiable curves on locally convex spaces. Such problems admit an extension of the Euler-Lagrange equations [Orlov 2002] for continuously normally differentiable Lagrangians. Here, we formulate a Legendre condition and an extension of the classical theorem of Emmy Noether, thus obtaining first integrals for problems of the calculus of variations on locally convex spaces.
We consider an inverse extremal problem for variational functionals on arbitrary time scales. Using the Euler-Lagrange equation and the strengthened Legendre condition, we derive a general form for a variational functional that attains a local minimum at a given point of the vector space.
In this paper, in the absence of any constraint qualifications, we develop sequential necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for a constrained multiobjective fractional programming problem characterizing a Henig proper efficient solution in terms of the $ε$-subdifferentials and the subdifferentials of the functions. This is achieved by employing a sequential Henig subdifferential calculus rule of the sums of $m \ (m\geq 2)$ proper convex vector valued mappings with a composition of two convex vector valued mappings. In order to present an example illustrating the main results of this p…
In this paper we develop new extremal principles in variational analysis that deal with finite and infinite systems of convex and nonconvex sets. The results obtained, unified under the name of tangential extremal principles, combine primal and dual approaches to the study of variational systems being in fact first extremal principles applied to infinite systems of sets. The first part of the paper concerns the basic theory of tangential extremal principles while the second part presents applications to problems of semi-infinite programming and multiobjective optimization.
This paper addresses the study and applications of polyhedral duality of locally convex topological vector (LCTV) spaces. We first revisit the classical Rockafellar's proper separation theorem for two convex sets one which is polyhedral and then present its LCTV extension with replacing the relative interior by its quasi-relative interior counterpart. Then we apply this result to derive enhanced calculus rules for normals to convex sets, coderivatives of convex set-valued mappings, and subgradients of extended-real-valued functions under certain polyhedrality requirements in LCTV spaces by dev…
We consider a series of optimal control problems with 2-dimensional control lying in an arbitrary convex compact set $Ω$. The considered problems are well studied for the case when $Ω$ is a unit disc, but barely studied for arbitrary $Ω$. We derive extremals to these problems in general case by using machinery of convex trigonometry, which allows us to do this identically and independently on the shape of $Ω$. The paper describes geodesics in (i) the Finsler problem on the Lobachevsky hyperbolic plane; (ii) left-invariant sub-Finsler problems on all unimodular 3D Lie groups (SU(2), SL(2), SE(2…
This article introduces the concept of weak sharp minima (WSM) for convex interval-valued functions (IVFs). To identify a set of WSM of a convex IVF, we provide its primal and dual characterizations. The primal characterization is given in terms of $gH$-directional derivatives. On the other hand, to derive dual characterizations, we propose the notions of the support function of a subset of $I(\mathbb{R})^{n}$ and $gH$-subdifferentiability for convex IVFs. Further, we develop the required $gH$-subdifferential calculus for convex IVFs. Thereafter, by using the proposed $gH$-subdifferential calc…
We propose a convex-optimization-based framework for computation of invariant measures of polynomial dynamical systems and Markov processes, in discrete and continuous time. The set of all invariant measures is characterized as the feasible set of an infinite-dimensional linear program (LP). The objective functional of this LP is then used to single-out a specific measure (or a class of measures) extremal with respect to the selected functional such as physical measures, ergodic measures, atomic measures (corresponding to, e.g., periodic orbits) or measures absolutely continuous w.r.t. to a gi…
