The main contribution of this paper is that every convex function with non-empty relative algebraic interior of its domain is Lipschitz and subdifferentiable in some algebraic sense without any additional topological constraints. The proposed approach uses slightly modified Clarke's subdifferential for functions defined on a convex symmetric set and Lipschitz with respect to a Minkowski functional. Following this, Clarke's subdifferential calculus is generalized to vector spaces and, where continuity properties are claimed, to topological vector spaces.
The paper is devoted to the development of a comprehensive calculus for directional limiting normal cones, subdifferentials and coderivatives in finite dimensions. This calculus encompasses the whole range of the standard generalized differential calculus for (non-directional) limiting notions and relies on very weak (non-restrictive) qualification conditions having also a directional character. The derived rules facilitate the application of tools exploiting the directional limiting notions to difficult problems of variational analysis including, for instance, various stability and sensitivit…
In this paper, in the absence of any constraint qualifications, we develop sequential necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for a constrained multiobjective fractional programming problem characterizing a Henig proper efficient solution in terms of the $ε$-subdifferentials and the subdifferentials of the functions. This is achieved by employing a sequential Henig subdifferential calculus rule of the sums of $m \ (m\geq 2)$ proper convex vector valued mappings with a composition of two convex vector valued mappings. In order to present an example illustrating the main results of this p…
In this paper we study local error bound moduli for a locally Lipschitz and regular function via its outer limiting subdifferential set. We show that the distance of 0 from the outer limiting subdifferential of the support function of the subdifferential set, which is essentially the distance of 0 from the end set of the subdifferential set, is an upper estimate of the local error bound modulus. This upper estimate becomes tight for a convex function under some regularity conditions. We show that the distance of 0 from the outer limiting subdifferential set of a lower $\mathcal{C}^1$ function …
Construction of an united theory of the subdifferentials of the first and second orders is interesting for many specialists in optimization \cite{morduchrockafel}. In the paper the rules for construction of the subdifferentials of the first and second orders are introduced. The constructions are done with the help of the Steklov integral of a Lipschitz function $f(\cdot)$ over the images of a set-valued mapping $D(\cdot)$. It is proved that the subdifferential of the first order consisting of the average integral limit values of the gradients $\nabla f(r(\cdot))$, calculated along the curves $…
The first part of the paper provides new characterizations of the normal cone to the effective domain of the supremum of an arbitrary family of convex functions. These results are applied in the second part to give new formulas for the subdifferential of the supremum function, which use both the active and nonactive functions at the reference point. Only the data functions are involved in these characterizations, the active ones from one side, together with the nonactive functions multiplied by some appropriate parameters. In contrast with previous works in the literature, the main feature of …
This work concerns the study of the subdifferential of the integral functional $$ E_f(x)=\int_{T} f(t,x)dμ(t), $$ where $f$ is a (not necessarily convex) normal integrand, $({T},\mathcal{A},μ)$ is a $σ$-finite measure space, while the decision variables vary in a separable Asplund space. First, using techniques of variational analysis we establish sequential approximate formulae for the Fréchet subdifferential of $E_f$. Secondly, we introduce a Lipschitz-like condition, which allows us to give an upper-estimation for the limiting subdifferential of $E_{f}$ even when this functional is non-Lips…
We derive exact calculus rules for the directed subdifferential defined for the class of directed subdifferentiable functions. We also state optimality conditions, a chain rule and a mean-value theorem. Thus we extend the theory of the directed subdifferential from quasidifferentiable to directed subdifferentiable functions.
Probability functions figure prominently in optimization problems of engineering. They may be nonsmooth even if all input data are smooth. This fact motivates the consideration of subdifferentials for such typically just continuous functions. The aim of this paper is to provide subdifferential formulae in the case of Gaussian distributions for possibly infinite-dimensional decision variables and nonsmooth (locally Lipschitzian) input data. These formulae are based on the spheric-radial decomposition of Gaussian random vectors on the one hand and on a cone of directions of moderate growth on the…
We generalise the outer subdifferential constructon suggested by Cánovas, Henrion, López and Parra for max type functions to pointwise minima of regular Lipschitz functions. We also answer an open question about the relation between the outer subdifferential of the support of a regular function and the end set of its subdifferential posed by Li, Meng and Yang.
This work provides calculus for the Fréchet and limiting subdifferential of the pointwise supremum given by an arbitrary family of lower semicontinuous functions. We start our study showing fuzzy results about the Fréchet subdifferential of the supremum function. Posteriorly, we study in finite- and infinite-dimensional settings the limiting subdifferential of the supremum function. Finally, we apply our results to the study of the convex subdifferential; here we recover general formulae for the subdifferential of an arbitrary family of convex functions.
Optimization models involving quaternion matrices are widely used in color image process and other engineering areas. These models optimize real functions of quaternion matrix variables. In particular, $\ell_0$-norms and rank functions of quaternion matrices are discrete. Yet calculus with derivatives, subdifferentials and generalized subdifferentials of such real functions is needed to handle such models. In this paper, we introduce first and second order derivatives and establish their calculation rules for such real functions. Our approach is consistent with the subgradient concept for norm…
The convergence theory for the gradient sampling algorithm is extended to directionally Lipschitz functions. Although directionally Lipschitz functions are not necessarily locally Lipschitz, they are almost everywhere differentiable and well approximated by gradients and so are a natural candidate for the application of the gradient sampling algorithm. The main obstacle to this extension is the potential unboundedness or emptiness of the Clarke subdifferential at points of interest. The convergence analysis we present provides one path to addressing these issues. In particular, we recover the …
In this paper, an upper semismooth function is defined to be a lower semicontinuous function whose radial subderivative satisfies a mild directional upper semicontinuity property. Examples of upper semismooth functions are the proper lower semicontinuous convex functions, the lower-C$^1$ functions, the regular directionally Lipschitz functions, the Mifflin semismooth functions, the Thibault-Zagrodny directionally stable functions. It is shown that the radial subderivative of such functions can be recovered from any subdifferential of the function. It is also shown that these functions are subd…
We provide some necessary and sufficient conditions for a proper lower semicontinuous convex function, defined on a real Banach space, to be locally or globally Lipschitz continuous. Our criteria rely on the existence of a bounded selection of the subdifferential mapping and the intersections of the subdifferential mapping and the normal cone operator to the domain of the given function. Moreover, we also point out that the Lipschitz continuity of the given function on an open and bounded (not necessarily convex) set can be characterized via the existence of a bounded selection of the subdiffe…
The paper concerns the investigation of nonconvex and nondifferentiable integral functionals on general Banach spaces, which may not be reflexive and/or separable. Considering two major subdifferentials of variational analysis, we derive nonsmooth versions of the Leibniz rule on subdifferentiation under the integral sign, where the integral of the subdifferential set-valued mappings generated by Lipschitzian integrands is understood in the Gelfand sense. Besides examining integration over complete measure spaces and also over those with nonatomic measures, our special attention is drawn to a s…
The goal of the paper is to study the particular class of regularly ${\mathcal{H}}$-convex functions, when ${\mathcal{H}}$ is the set ${\mathcal{L}\widehat{C}}(X,{\mathbb{R}})$ of real-valued Lipschitz continuous classically concave functions defined on a real normed space $X$. For an extended-real-valued function $f:X \mapsto \overline{\mathbb{R}}$ to be ${\mathcal{L}\widehat{C}}$-convex it is necessary and sufficient that $f$ be lower semicontinuous and bounded from below by a Lipschitz continuous function; moreover, each ${\mathcal{L}\widehat{C}}$-convex function is regularly ${\mathcal{L}\…
In this article, we introduce the idea of $gH$-weak subdifferential for interval-valued functions (IVFs) and show how to calculate $gH$-weak subgradients. It is observed that a nonempty $gH$-weak subdifferential set is closed and convex. In characterizing the class of functions for which the $gH$-weak subdifferential set is nonempty, it is identified that this class is the collection of $gH$-lower Lipschitz IVFs. In checking the validity of sum rule of $gH$-weak subdifferential for a pair of IVFs, a counterexample is obtained, which reflects that the sum rule does not hold. However, under a mi…
In this article, we study $gH$-subdifferential calculus of convex interval-valued functions (IVFs) and apply it in a nonconvex composite model of interval optimization problems (IOPs). It is found that the $gH$-directional derivative of maximum of finitely many comparable IVFs is the maximum of their $gH$-directional derivative. Proposed concepts of $gH$-subdifferential are observed to be useful to derive Fritz-John-type and KKT-type efficiency conditions for weak efficient solutions of IOPs. Further, we extract a necessary and sufficient condition to characterize the weak efficient solutions …
The ordinary differential equation $\dot{x}(t)=f(x(t)), \; t \geq 0 $, for $f$ measurable, is not sufficiently regular to guarantee existence of solutions. To remedy this we may relax the problem by replacing the function $f$ with its Filippov regularization $F_{f}$ and consider the differential inclusion $\dot{x}(t)\in F_{f}(x(t))$ which always has a solution. It is interesting to know, inversely, when a set-valued map $Φ$ can be obtained as the Filippov regularization of a (single-valued, measurable) function. In this work we give a full characterization of such set-valued maps, hereby calle…
This article provides a definition of a subdifferential for continuous functions based on homological considerations. We show that it satisfies all the requirement for a good notion of subdifferential. Moreover, we prove sublinearity, a Leibniz formula and an approximation result. This work fits in the framework of microlocal analysis of sheaves for C^0 symplectic problems and application to Aubry-Mather theory.
The main goal of this paper is to apply the machinery of variational analysis and generalized differentiation to study infinite horizon stochastic dynamic programming (DP) with discrete time in the Banach space setting without convexity assumptions. Unlike to standard stochastic DP with stationary Markov processes, we investigate here stochastic DP in $L^p$ spaces to deal with nonstationary stochastic processes, which describe a more flexible learning procedure for the decision-maker. Our main concern is to calculate generalized subgradients of the corresponding value function and to derive ne…
In this paper we present explicit estimate for Lipschitz constant of solution to a problem of calculus of variations. The approach we use is due to Gamkrelidze and is based on the equivalence of the problem of calculus of variations and a time-optimal control problem. The obtained estimate is used to compute complexity bounds for a path-following method applied to a convex problem of calculus of variations with polyhedral end-point constraints.
The paper proposes and develops new globally convergent algorithms of the generalized damped Newton type for solving important classes of nonsmooth optimization problems. These algorithms are based on the theory and calculations of second-order subdifferentials of nonsmooth functions with employing the machinery of second-order variational analysis and generalized differentiation. First we develop a globally superlinearly convergent damped Newton-type algorithm for the class of continuously differentiable functions with Lipschitzian gradients, which are nonsmooth of second order. Then we desig…
This article introduces the concept of weak sharp minima (WSM) for convex interval-valued functions (IVFs). To identify a set of WSM of a convex IVF, we provide its primal and dual characterizations. The primal characterization is given in terms of $gH$-directional derivatives. On the other hand, to derive dual characterizations, we propose the notions of the support function of a subset of $I(\mathbb{R})^{n}$ and $gH$-subdifferentiability for convex IVFs. Further, we develop the required $gH$-subdifferential calculus for convex IVFs. Thereafter, by using the proposed $gH$-subdifferential calc…
In this paper, we introduce the second-order subdifferentials for functions which are Gâteaux differentiable on an open set and whose Gâteaux derivative mapping is locally Lipschitz. Based on properties of this kind of second-order subdifferentials and techniques of variational analysis, we derive second-order necessary conditions for weak Pareto efficient solutions of multiobjective programming problems with constraints.
We propose a nonsmooth trust-region method for solving optimization problems with locally Lipschitz continuous functions, with application to problems constrained by variational inequalities of the second kind. Under suitable assumptions on the model functions, convergence of the general algorithm to a C-stationary point is verified. For variational inequality constrained problems, we are able to properly characterize the Bouligand subdifferential of the reduced cost function and, based on that, we propose a computable trust-region model which fulfills the convergence hypotheses of the general…
In this article, the concepts of gH-subgradients and gH-subdifferentials of interval-valued functions are illustrated. Several important characteristics of the gH-subdifferential of a convex interval-valued function, e.g., closeness, boundedness, chain rule, etc. are studied. Alongside, we prove that gH-subdifferential of a gH-differentiable convex interval-valued function only contains gH-gradient of that interval-valued function. It is observed that the gH-directional derivative of a convex interval-valued function in each direction is maximum of all the products of gH-subgradients and the d…
This paper presents an extension of stochastic gradient descent for the minimization of Lipschitz continuous loss functions. Our motivation is for use in non-smooth non-convex stochastic optimization problems, which are frequently encountered in applications such as machine learning. Using the Clarke $ε$-subdifferential, we prove the non-asymptotic convergence to an approximate stationary point in expectation for the proposed method. From this result, a method with non-asymptotic convergence with high probability, as well as a method with asymptotic convergence to a Clarke stationary point alm…
The (delta-) normal cone to an arbitrary intersection of sublevel sets of proper, lower semicontinuous, and convex functions is characterized, using either epsilon-subdifferentials at the nominal point or exact subdifferentials at nearby points. Our tools include (epsilon-) calculus rules for sup/max functions. The framework of this work is that of a locally convex space, however, formulas using exact subdifferentials require some restriction either on the space (e.g. Banach), or on the function (e.g. epi-pointed).

In this article, we present an efficient descent method for locally Lipschitz continuous multiobjective optimization problems (MOPs). The method is realized by combining a theoretical result regarding the computation of descent directions for nonsmooth MOPs with a practical method to approximate the subdifferentials of the objective functions. We show convergence to points which satisfy a necessary condition for Pareto optimality. Using a set of test problems, we compare our method to the multiobjective proximal bundle method by Mäkelä. The results indicate that our method is competitive while…
In this paper we study the concept of algebraic core for convex sets in general vector spaces without any topological structure and then present its applications to problems of convex analysis and optimization. Deriving the equivalence between the Hahn-Banach theorem and and a simple version of the separation theorem of convex sets in vector spaces allows us to develop a geometric approach to generalized differential calculus for convex sets, set-valued mappings, and extended-real-valued functions with qualification conditions formulated in terms of algebraic cores for such objects. We also ob…
We study the budget map and the indirect utility function of a parametric consumer problem in a Banach space setting by some advanced tools from set-valued and variational analysis. The Lipschitz-likeness and differentiability properties of the budget map, as well as formulas for finding subdifferentials of the infimal nuisance function, which is obtained from the indirect utility function by changing its sign, are established. Our investigation is mainly based on the paper by Mordukhovich [J. Global Optim. 28 (2004), 347--362] on coderivative analysis of variational systems and the paper of M…
